Photoshop 5 question

In Photoshop 5, I get a  compatibility error message (broken page icon) saying file can
not be opened because it is the wrong type of file.  I have saved the file with the original name and added
- edit after jpg (eX:  IMG_1234.jpg-edit)  Please help if you can explain this.
Thanks.

Some applications are VERY sensitive to you adding anything after the period (".jpg").  Applications - and the operating system look at the characters in this area to determine which application should open a particular file.  So the application or the operating system might say, "It's got a 'jpg' there - I'll open the file with Photoshop Elements."  But when you start adding characters back there, the operating system says, "What the heck is a 'jpg-edit" format?  I have no idea what application should open that."
The jpg designation also is stored in a hidden area of the title as well, so if you remove "jpg" from the file title, the operating system still knows that this is a picture.  But you left ".jpg" in - and then confused it with additional characters.
I never add any characters after the period in a file name.  I also try to stay away from using the dash character in a title.  Over the decades, I've had problems with other applications reserving that character for their own use - and refusing to open documents when I used it in the title.  To prevent problems, I just adopted the policy of never using it, and using the under bar - ___ - instead.  Using the dash character probably isn't a problem any more, but I've just kept doing that.

  • Adobe Photoshop Touch Question / Issue

    Hello,
    I bought Adobe Photoshop Touch some time ago for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and I liked it so much. Of all the apps I had for photo editing, this one gave me all I need. I used to own Adobe Photoshop CS2 on my old PC so I wanted something for my tab as well. I was very satisfied by this app until my tab died some time ago. After a pain of service and repairs, the tab worked again but it had a new issue. Anytime I used the device on something more demanding (i.e. playing games ) the tab overheated a lot and the screen started to touch itself very much as, if it was pressed all the time. After some time of struggle with it I decided to wipe it clean and pass it out to a family member who would maybe dedicate more time to fix it.
    Last month I bought myself a new device ( Sony Xperia Z ) and I was eager to get all my data on it and apps of course. To my sadness Adobe Photoshop Touch is not compatible with my device now, and it just sits there in my app list doing nothing . I could install only Photoshop Express but it does not give me the full access I had with Touch. I saw that there is another product called Photoshop Touch for smartphones and it seems to be the same as what I had only phone edition.
    My problem is that I can not get this new app unless I pay for it and I do not wish to do that because I already paid for the previous edition.
    My question is: Can I somehow obtain the Smartphone edition and the previous version ( which apparently is for tablets I suppose ) be removed from my Google Play account. I would purchase the smartphone version but there is no point in having 1 app 2 times.
    I would happily like the staff to remove my previous version from my account if they would gave me the smartphone version and I acknowledge that the tab app was more expensive than the smartphone version and Adobe will not refund me the money difference nor are they obligated to give me the smartphone version. I am just asking if it would be possible because I like that app and it's such a shame for it to be in my app list and not be used. Thank you for your time in reading this and no matter what answer I get, I will be ok with it. Have a nice day .

    I don't think you'll have much luck. PS Touch for tablets was designed for just tablets; PS Touch for phones was designed for just phones. Touch for phones came out a little later than Touch for tablets. (By several months, if I recall.) On the brighter side, if you ended up buying Touch for phones, you'd be covered no matter which device you had.
    Both are very similar in function. I believe the only differences are their UIs; Touch for tablets is landscape-oriented-specific while Touch for phones is portrait-oriented. (Some elements are also placed differently.) I imagine this allows for maximum utilization of screen real estate and element placement.

  • What are the forensic limitations of Metadata & Exif Data+ Adobe Photoshop 3 question; e.g. Metadata

    I have some questions regarding metadata, and exif data on digital   cameras and its forensic limitations in Adobe photoshop 3;
    For  instance; After a picture is taken and has a metadata/exif digital   stamp of the "picture being taken day" under what circumstances can  that  "picture being taken day" be changed?
    Does the picture  being taken day change when you import it into adobe  photoshop 3 and  add a caption?
    Does it change only when the picture is edited,  to perhaps add a white  sidebar that says "family photo" or whatever?
    Under what circumstances does the exif/metadata digital time stamp  of  the "picture being taken day" change?
    Also, is it possible  to change the picture being taken day on a  photograph in adobe  photoshop 3 manually?
    Thanks-
    Phil

    I guess it would be easier to give you an example. The above picture shows the exif data as 9.11.2001. How is this possible if this is a 911 victim? In the top metadata, it says Adobe photoshop 3. I assume this is the program it was last edited in? Or was adobe software used exclusively in cameras back then perhaps? I am not sure, I just know I have many questions I really want answers to. Was the exif data changed perhaps in the above photo on 9.11.2001 to add that white sidebar, which says (Family photo) ?? Click the image below to see the screenshot of what I am looking at, this way we are on the same page or picture so to  speak.
    Any help you can give will be greatly appreciatted...
    Thanks,
    Phil

  • Photoshop import question?

    How can I take a screen shot in Premiere Pro (CS6 or CC) without it becoming distorted? Lately, when doing this, the images are elongated. Then, when I bring the image into Photoshop, it looks fine, except that the Pixel Aspect Ratio has been automatically engaged. I seem to not be able to do anything to the image to correct it and when saved, it goes back to its distorted form. What am I doing incorrectly? What is the fix for this? Is this a Premiere issue or a Photoshop issue? If a Premiere issue, please kick the question over to the appropriate forum. SIDE NOTE: I tried to resolve this via a chat session...that was an exercise in futility.
    Thanks!

    So much for grace, but I guess it is to be expected. I am using Premiere Pro CS6, editing HDV footage. Premiere is set for HDV 60i, 23.97 frame rate. I am capturing the screen shot from the program monitor (timeline) having tried the preview monitor earlier, with the same distorted results. And for the record, you ARE rude. I've responded to others' questions on this and other forums--even when it was apparent that they had no clue what they were asking, but I exhibited FAR MORE GRACE THAN YOU in asking for more information, so that I might be able to help them.
    You're welcome.

  • Photoshop/Dreamweaver question

    Hi,
    I used Photoshop to create a Flash slideshow via the Tools menu in Bridge.
    Now i want to put it is a Dreamweaver page, but it has left me with the folowing files: flashobject.js, photos.js, gallery.swf, galleryconfig.xml, photos.xml, index.html, UserSelections.txt, images file, pages file and thumbnails file.
    When I add the gallery.swf file to Dreamweaver it goes on in a large grey box as it should, but when I try to play it or open it in a browser it is just blank, as in there is nothing there.  If I double click index.html it works perfectly.
    If it helps the gallery.swf icon is like a filestrip with Adobe Illustrator logo in it, rather than the usally Flash logo.
    any help would be great,
    Thank you,
    markus

    The answer is to not let Photoshop write either your HTML or your CSS for you.  What you show is a disaster waiting to happen, really, and is characteristic of the kind of mess produced by any wizard that writes HTML based on a graphic layout.  Use your graphics editors to produce your graphics.  Build your page in DW.  It's a much better way to go.
    I know how to make a DIV center (with Margin auto left and right) but I do not know how to center all DIV's at once.
    I hope you are willing to help me with this. In case you have more questions let me know.
    Leaving your page with all absolutely positioned elements is really asking for trouble, but here's how to make them all center at once -
    Change this -
    </head>
    to this -
    <style type="text/css">
    #wrapper { width:760px; margin:0 auto;position:relative; }
    /* 760px will display on an 800px screen maximized browser window without */
    /* horizontal scrollbars. Change as needed */
    </style>
    </head>
    change this -
    <body ...>
    (the ellipsis represents any other attributes that might be mentioned in the body tag, and SHOULD NOT BE INCLUDED EXPLICITLY!)
    to this -
    <body ...>
    <div id="wrapper">
    and this -
    </body>
    to this -
      <!-- /wrapper -->
    </div>
    </body>
    and see if that helps.

  • NVIDIA Geforce 9400M and Adobe Photoshop/CS5 question

    Adobe states that their new software, due to ship April 30, will require a "... qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card, 16-bit color, and 256MB of VRAM"
    Does the 9400M on the base model iMac and many other models including laptops, offer hardware acceleration to OpenGL?
    If I want to buy a new computer to run CS5, do I HAVE to buy the better models that do not have the 9400M? I'm sure the better model (with ATI Radeon HD 4670) would be better, but is it an absolute requirement? Adobe is not sure which models are qualified. I've been making a list of Intel based Macs that surely won't run CS5. A demo version is forthcoming to find out for ourselves. Any hardware geeks or engineers with tech info?

    Hi, this is a what I found out: The respective hardware is listed here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/831/cpsid_83117.html
    With my white Macbook 4.1 I have no problems to use all features of the regulard Photoshop CS5. Even when running on 2 monitors (I do the actual work on a 23" Apple Display and use the MacBook for my tools)
    Even a test with Photoshop Extended CS5 version has worked out but with lousy performance. In case there are people out who like to know, what can be done with OpenGL ... Adobe is great in hiding stuff:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html#updating
    Further information can be found here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html
    Also a lot information can be found in the 600+ pages Manual. This is also pretty much hidden. You need to activate the onlin help and than click the text in the upper right corner which read something like "Show Help-PDF (38MB)" ... the wording in German is "Hilfe-PDF anzeigen (38MB)
    Or you download it here:
    http://help.adobe.com/enUS/photoshop/cs/using/photoshop_cs5help.pdf
    http://help.adobe.com/deDE/photoshop/cs/using/photoshop_cs5help.pdf
    There is, however, a big problem as soon as several applications use OpenGL. In my case it is EyeTV. I can either view live TV or record it. I cannot do both. Neither can I view a recorded Clip in EyeTV. For me as a non-professional it appears, that OpenGL allows a program to do TWO things at a time which can only be done, if the storage (RAM) is separated). Since Photoshop and EyeTV fight for the same spaces only one can be on first. And Photoshop seems to dominate... the normal view of the picture is produced by the regular chip while the bells and whistles a supported by the graphic chip. EyeTV may even freeze.
    By the way, there is an option, to stop EyeTV (and probably other programs too) from using OpenGL.
    http://support.elgato.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3097
    It works i.e. the basics like viewing and recording works but I have decided to use always only one OpenGL-program at a given time.
    Last comment - though you did not ask: I have marked under "Finder Information" to open in 32-Bit modus. The program as such works also without this mark but plug-ins like those from NIK-software do not work yet. Their updates are coming:
    http://www.niksoftware.com/support/usa/entry.php?view=faqs/generalanswers.shtml#CS5compatibility
    I will post my question on a related issue separately = will an increase of the graphic memory to 512MB guarantee better performance or it it also a question, how OSX 10.6 manages the split various memory chips?

  • Photoshop CS4 question   (Tiles)

    Sirs,
    I have tried asking the Photoshop CS4 technical support a question which they are so far unable to answer - perhaps this forum can provide an answer.
    The question: Located within Photoshop CS4 there is the option to install "Bigger Tiles". Several technical websites have stated that in is important to install the bigger tiles to improve the performance of CS4 and not installing causes Cs4 to run slower and less efficiently. So what is Adobe's opinion on installing the bigger tiles?  To be clear - the option to install is included within Cs4 and the tiles are not an external 3rd party application - I say this to be clear since your technical support on the phone (4 times) had never heard of  Bigger Tiles.
    Ron Wilson Imaging
    Ron Wilson

    What follows refers specifically to CS4, but it's not from Adobe at all.  Just passing this on, for whatever it may be worth:
    Be clear on this: Adobe’s advice as of January 2009 is stale. Plugins  that Adobe either doesn’t enable or even include by default are critical  to performance!
    Use the Bigger Tiles plugin in conjunction with DisableScratchCompress plugin.  Failure to use these plugins results in a penalty of up to 50% on Mac OS X in any “decent” configuration (over  100% for Photoshop CS3). It’s bizarre that Adobe calls these  “legacy” plugins, because they have a massive performance impact. Download the Plugins
    Bigger Tiles is critical
    The Bigger Tiles plugin in  particular is absolutely critical to performance in most cases,  especially with large files. Using Photoshop CS4 11.0.1, I measured  these bizarre results with and without Bigger Tiles on both a 2.8GHz 2008 Mac Pro and a 2.93GHz 2009 Mac Pro  Nehalem. I confirmed with Rob-Art at barefeats.com that same behavior; the culprit seems  to be the Smart Sharpen function, which  runs far more slowly without Bigger Tiles.
    Even if the scratch disk is not being used (no disk  writes are observed),  using the Bigger Tiles plugin is essential.
    Possible exception: if you use files with numerous (50  or more) layers, Bigger Tiles might or might not help, or could be  slower. Test your own particular workflow.

  • Photoshop 6 Question about purchasing on Apple website

    First off,
    I am very sorry for posting this under Aperture. I have no idea where I would post a question like this and if any of you could even answer it. I will delete it once I get an answer..if I do. haha.
    I want to buy Photoshop CS6. I am a student and was browing on the apple website and saw two of the same package but for two different prices. Do you know why one would be cheaper than the other? I couldn't find anything different about them... It's the two Student and Teacher Edition softwares.
    What's the difference?
    Once again, very sorry for posting here.
    Thank you!

    You may want to call the Apple store support to ask why they are showing two prices.
    I know that currently Adobe is offering a $20 instant rebate with a supplied code through 8/26. The normal price is $249.99 minus the $20 (giving you the $229.99 price you see in the Apple store).
    Adobe link:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopextended.edu.html
    Either way that is a great price if you need the full extended package.

  • Starting Photoshop application question

    Hi Ive just started the 30 day trial in photoshop and this may sound like a silly question but how do you get into the actual application?

    Can you at the very least tell us your platform, Mac or Win, and the version of Photoshop you downloaded?
    You need to extract the download, install the application and launch it.  In order to guide you, a lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.
    BOILERPLATE TEXT:
    If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
    such as your platform (Mac or Win),
    exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CC", but something like CC2014.v.2.2) and of Bridge,
    your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
    the type of file you were working on,
    machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
    what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
    if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
    if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too,
    etc.,
    someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).

  • Photoshop upgrade question

    I am thinking of buying Adobe Creative Suite 2 for MAC OSX  [Creative Suite 2 :Illustrator CS2; InDesign CS2; Photoshop CS2; ImageReady CS2; Cue CS2]. It's cheap - which is what I need. I have bought a MacMini running OS X 10.8 because I got left behind on the PPC powerbook.
    I understand that that CS2 is slow, as it's a half way house beteen the two Mac system architectures.
    So I found a cheap upgrade [Adobe Photoshop Extended CS5, Upsell Version from Photoshop CS2/CS3/CS4]
    But I wonder if this will work as an upgrade to the CS2 one. This one is Photoshop alone, so I don't know if it would upgrade just the photoshop part of the CS2 suite? I only need Photoshop, anyway [the CS2 suite is selling really cheap]
    So to be long winded... I hope it makes sense.
    Thank you, anyone out there who migt know.
    John
    PS  There's a site selling pretty cheap Adobe products ... I wonder if anyone knows if it's a rip off site??
    http://softjet.net/browse/search/?q=photoshop

    Hi John, I'm reasonably certain that site isn't all that legit...
    Based in the Ukraine btw...
    http://www.scamadviser.com/check-website/soft-jet.net
    As far as CS2, I doubt it can even be installed on/in 10.8.x

  • Photoshop CS2 Question

    It is my understanding that Adobe's Photoshop CS2 does NOT run on iMac Intel Core 2 Duo...yet I was able to install Adobe Creative Suite 2 which includes Photoshop CS2 on a friends new iMac Intel???? Can someone shed some light on this for me? Is there a different version on Creavtive Suite 2?
    I was able to open the Photoshop Application adn ti seemed to be working fine. Does this mean it is running on Rosetta? If it is...it seemed to be running jsut fine.
    thanks
    iMac 24" 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   iPod 4G, Airport Express

    It certainly does run. It just requires Rosetta to do the translation. With enough RAM, it works very nicely indeed.

  • Lightroom/photoshop workflow question

    I have a scenario that I can't seem to get working the way I want.
    Scenario: I edit a file in photoshop with multiple layers (.tiff or .psd). I then add that file to my lightroom catalog and would like to have it automatically updated in lightroom when making changes in photoshop. I know this is possible when using the "Edit in Photoshop" option but I can't seem to get it working when I had the file in photoshop first.
    If I import the file into lightroom and then make changes in photoshop the changes are not applied in lightroom. If, in lightroom, I choose "edit in photoshop" then I get a flat image generated from the lightroom file that does not have all my previously created photoshop layers.

    If you have an image imported into LR then any changes to that image in, for example, PS will automatically be reflected in LR. Aside from being able to see previews in Library, all your Develop adjustments will still apply to the updated image too.
    There are two concepts that need to be understood here. Firstly, LR does not support editing in layers, it was never designed to do this, but neither does it destroy them if they exist. It simply processes whatever Develop adjustments you have to the whole image as if it were flat. Secondly, it is a non-destructive editing platform, which means that all adjustments made in LR stay in LR unless you export the image. Then the adjustments are used to create a new file and, bringing in concept one, this file would not have layers.
    So if you Edit In > Photoshop > Edit a copy with Lightroom Adjustments, then you’ll end up losing your layers.
    If you can put up with not having your Lightroom adjustments when you need to make pixel-level edits, then simply Edit In > Photoshop > Edit Original. Once you have finished your editing, save and overwrite the file and when you go back to LR, you will automatically have your new pixel-level edits + all your existing LR develop adjustments all in a file that retains its layers
    What’s more, there’s no reason why you can’t edit the file outside of LR. Because it’s already linked in the LR catalog, when you next open LR it will recognise that the image has changed and update the preview automatically. Using this method invariably means that some metadata changes. LR does not update externally modified metadata automatically but instead prompts you with an arrow in the top right of the grid and filmstrip previews. Clicking on this give you options on how to manage the metadata conflict.

  • Photoshop workflow question

    I read somewhere that using <ALT> + Click you can use to load alpha channels could someone verify what is the correct method ? And clipping only applies to the background layer when you apply a change to the canvas I was told but I'm unclear about this.

    You mean to use guides? that's probably just to get reproduceable
    effects so instead of dragging around until it "looks good", you drag
    out a guide and then modify until your object hits that guide or
    something like that. You'll probably see this in tutorials which want
    to make sure that you're on the same page as them.
    I'm probably going to have to go back and find that section of the tutorial regarding guides and the warp tool
    The thing with Illustrator isn't that you need to save out .PDF files,
    it's that when you save your .AI files you have to select the Create
    PDF Compatible File checkbox otherwise you won't be able to open them
    in Photoshop, Smart Objects or no. Just try to open such a file in
    Photoshop, see what it tells you
    I will do that, I'm just brushing up on some things with photoshop.  Many have photoshop but many cannot call themselves advanced users

  • Edit in Photoshop Elements, question

    In Lightroom 3 when I try to edit several selected photos in Photoshop 3 only one showsup in the project bin.. i have reviewed the "edit" form and it is correct, I THINK?
    E.g., I would like to take a number of images from LR to PSE for Merge (fake HDR).  Also in many cases to synch or apply the same edit to a group.
    Greatly appreciate,
    Ed

    Ed,
    I have no problem opening multiple images from LR3 in PSE9 (Win7, WinXP), I do it often for panos.
    Tell us a little more about:
    Your O/S
    Your LR version
    Your PSE version
    from which module (Develop, Library)
    what types of files (Raw, ...)
    your file format, bit depth etc. when going to PSE
    exact steps you take to open multiple images (menu, right click?)

  • I need help...Monthly Photoshop Subscription Question...

    Hello.  I signed up for the monthly Photoshop Creative Cloud last year.  I really only use Photoshop for some very basic things maybe 2x a month.  I have read that I can get a free version with 2GB of storage for free.  Is this true?  And would this work for me?  I just want to be able to access Photoshop on my computer and want to be able to pull up the files I have and change them when necessary.  I am very much a novice at Photoshop as well, so I don't do anything major on it.  If I can save the $32 a month, it would be very helpful financially.  Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    A Photography Subscription is Only $10 a month so you can not save $32 a month.  Photoshop is not free nor version is.  However there free touch apps for iOS devices like phones, iPods and iPads there I believe there is also Android versions as well as a online version of Photoshop Express.   Photoshop Express is not Photoshop or Photoshop Elements which are PC applications that run on windows and Mac OS.
