Photoshop 7 and CS3

I have 2 versions of Adobe Photoshop, 7 and CS3. I just ordered my new iMac and want to know if these will run on Snow Leopard?
I have lots of photos that were scanned and edited in PS 7 and stored on CD. Will they open in CS5 if I am forced to buy it. It's so expensive and frankly I'm happy with 7 and the later cs3.
I've heard that Adobe won't support CS3 on Snow Leopard. Being that I don't have my new mac yet I just don't know what to expect for all of my huge files in PS.

Don't worry. You should be perfectly happy using your Photoshop CS3 on your new computer. All your old photos should appear just fine.
If you want to upgrade you might consider Photoshop Elements. For the vast majority of non-professionals it does everything you will ever ask of it. And the price is right. And it is a Universal Application which your Photoshop CS3 is not.
Enjoy your new computer.

  • Images print too dark from Photoshop CS2 and CS3

Having used both CS2 and CS3 I now realise that the prints that I work on in either appear much brighter on the screen that they do when printed, as much as 3 stops darker when printed. I have also noticed that in other programs such as Google Picasa that I use as a viewing tool the images appear closer to the images from the printer. I have used various pro-labs that require their profiles to be used and my own epson 3800 printer at home and despite trying lots of different settings I am unable to get prints that look like they do on the screen they are always darker.
I am using windows XP on a dual core 2.4 PC with 2 Gb ram and an ATI Radeon X1600 series grafix card which I have just updated the driver on. The monitor is an LCD type and is calibrated weekly using a spyder 2 express.

First isolate whether your display is too bright or your printer is too
dark. I'd start by printing images from another source and see if they
look as they should. www.drycreekphoto.com has a number of calibration
images that should do for this purpose.
Once you've isolated the problem, we can take it from there.

  • Targa alpha differences between Photoshop 7 and CS3

We're using Targa images for games work and need precise control over alpha levels.
In Photoshop 7, it seems that grey levels in the alpha channel are transferred directly to that Targa. For example, a grey level of 50% in the alpha channel produces an alpha value of 128 in the Targa file, as you would expect.
In Photoshop CS3, I'm getting 105 for 50% grey. And in order to get 128 I have to set my Photoshop colour to #959595.
This is a serious incompatibility for us. We can no longer generate correct alpha using Photoshop gradients. Also, some of us are using 7 and some CS3, and we need automation to work! There seems to be some sort of curve being applied to the alpha.
Firstly, does anyone else see this? I'm beginning to doubt my sanity.
Is there a way to fix it? When I say 128 I want 128!
(I've searched the forums and knowledgebase for "targa alpha" and Google for "photoshop targa alpha" and turned up nothing relevant.)

progress, I know that the values are often the same when you look at them in Photoshop, but they are not stored in the TGA as those values. Also, because the range 0-255 for alpha is mapped through a colour management curve, the values are NOT always preserved by save/open, but rounded.
Proof: using colour settings "North America General purpose 2" make a small (e.g. 32x32) image with white background. Make an alpha channel. Set your foreground colour to 62, 62, 62. Fill the alpha channel. Save as TGA, open, check the alpha channel. It's now 61, 61, 61.
If you save a TGA with alpha channel 61 grey, then try to change it to 62, then save it, you get an identical file.
But really the point is this: alpha is not colour. It is transparency. It should not be subject to colour management. You say "the visual is maintained" but alpha is transparency, not colour, and the visual is _not_ maintained if it is transformed through colour management. This is because we are trying to manipulate images where "128 alpha" means exactly 50% transparency, as you would expect. But with Photoshop this is not what you get _in_the_file_.
Ramón, if Chris means that Photoshop writes "128" in the file for "grey 128" in the alpha channel then he's wrong, as shown by my hex dumps earlier in this thread. This is why I wonder what he means.

  • Channel Value Issue Between Photoshop 6 and CS3

We use a specialized process that includes Channel operations to make separations for printing. When we use the same process that we have always used in any NEW photoshop, the value are completely different. This is best illustrated by opening a PS5 file and looking at the channels. we open the file in CS3 and look at the darkest value. we then they to fill an area of that same color in that channel and it is lighter, BUT CS3 says that it is the SAME value. we are blown away and cannot figure out what we are doing. We have tried color settings, everything. My boss even contacted Adobe tech support, had them recreate the problem and they say that they had no idea why it works like it does. I know that this is a long rambling post but if anyone has the slightest inkling of how to help i will accept any and all offers!
    Thanks.

I am fairly certain that the way that Dot Gain was calculated or applied was also changed at some stage in the evolution of Photoshop?
It seems that it did! I have just found this (it dates from a piece I posted in 1998!):
Incidently, the Dot Gain algorithm has been changed in Photoshop 5.0.
Dan Margulis has discovered the formula for translating these values and I am repeating it here in case people missed that posting.
Starting with your known Photoshop 4 Dot Gain,
Subtract that dot gain from 40
    Multiply the result by .33
    Add 3 to that number
Subtract that number of points from your dot gain to get your PS 5 equivalent.
That would make a PS 4 Dot Gain value of 29% work out as:
    40 - 29 = 11.
    11 x 0.33 = 3.63
    3.63 + 3 = 6.63
    29 - 6.63 = 22.37 Dot Gain in PS 5
    Hope that helps.

  • Double-click/Drag-&-drop Photoshop files opens application but not file or I get a message saying that some files in Application Support are missing and I have to reinstall. (Photoshop CS/CS2/CS3)

This is most commonly due to installing Photoshop CS/CS2 <i>before</i> doing an archive and install of Mac OS10.3 or OS10.4.<br /><br />One solution is to reinstall Photoshop 7/CS/CS3 after you have installed Mac OS10.3 or OS 10.4.<br /><br />If you have Photoshop 7 and 8(CS), the easiest way to reinstall Photoshop (without disturbing the original installation) is to install to your desktop. After the install is done just trash the Photoshop folder on the desktop.<br />Note: This will only work with Photoshop 7 and 8(CS) but not with 9 (CS2).<br /><br />Photoshop CS2 you must delete the Photoshop CS2 folder. If you have any 3rd party Plugins or presets remove them from the folder before deleting. Just placing the folder in the trash will not work it must be deleted. After reinstalling CS2 you can now put all 3rd party Plugins and presets back in the new folder.<br /><br />---------------------------<br />Another solution courtesy Anne Shelbourne<br /><br />Open your Previous System folder. <br />Find "Adobe Unit Types". <br />Copy it into: <Your current system Hard Drive>/Library/ScriptingAdditions/<br />Then reboot your Mac.<br /><br />---------------------------<br />However, if you happen to be running a non-English version, like Photoshop CS CE or Photoshop CS ME, it appears the missing file does not get installed. You would need to install and delete the international English version first.

The problem you got into is a known problem after updating to Tiger. It is a small 4K file that gets trashed with the update. It is called the Adobe Unit Types. Both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements need this file to function.
One way to get it back is to reinstall Photoshop, the other is to add this file again.
You can get the file from here http://www.dd.se/Tips/bildbehandling/downloads/AdobeUnitTypes.zip
It is only 3,7 KB big.
You put the file you download here:
[hard disk] /Library/ScriptingAdditions. If you don't have a Scripting Additions folder, you create it.
As you trashed Photoshop, you need to completely deinstall it to be able to reinstall it.

  • Photoshop 7 vs CS3 and CS3 enhanced

Hi I love my PS 7, but my new Mac Pro doesn't so I am FORCED once again to upgrade. Can anyone please tell me that has made the jump whether I should go for CS3 or CS3 enhanced. Is the enhanced that much better and worth the extra $? Or is CS3 like the PS 7 limited edition and CS3 enchanced just the logical upgrade to Photoshop. Thanks for the help. I'm leaning towards the plain CS3 due to the high cost of the Mac Pro and did not realize that PS 7 WOULD NOT RUN, STATED UNIVERSAL BINARY and that is why we made the jump. arrrggghh thanks adobe. sorry for venting.

    >arrrggghh thanks adobe.
Why are you mad at Adobe they didn't make the OS that won't run Version 7 Apple did.
Version 7 is six years old now. Do you really believe Adobe knew Apple was going switch over to an Intel chip in 2001 when Photoshop was being developed? Version 7 was a Universal Binary to bridge both OS9 a system Apple declared was dead and the new OSX.
Considering all the hoops Apple has made Adobe jump through over these last few years I'm surprised more software doesn't work. Also the introduction of Leopard has introduced many problems with the remaining Adobe apps. CS1 and 2 will not be supported in Leopard and will not get any Patch fixes. CS3 doesn't work all that well either but at least Adobe is trying to solve the problems created by Apple.
So if you have any animosity to anyone it should be Uncle Steve for not making a compatible OS.

  • How do I create full width photos for a website with Photoshop - Fireworks - Dreamweaver CS3 ?

    Greetings & Help!
I'm trying to create a full width photo layout using Photoshop or Fireworks CS3 and then end with Dreamwaver CS3 without the photo's being tall.
Exactly as the following websites - which all seem to be using the same size of photo or very close to it.
This site is static with full width photos that are not tall.
    http://www.jenniferhandyproperties.com/selling
This site is static for the most part and full width photos that are not tall
    http://www.gnvpartners.com/web/
This site is Flash with full width photos that are not tall.
    expodesigncenter
I would love to create a flash site just like expo but at this point I would settle for a static photo with the same size being the same on each page.
Also I would like my site to be a liquid layout so the photo and everything else (text, Links etc) on the page flows correctly.
    The problem...
I'm trying to use photo's from Istockphoto.com. The size of the photo's they offer are
    425 x 282 px (5.9" x 3.9")
    849 x 565 px (11.8" x 7.8")
    1698 x 1131 px (5.7" x 3.8")
I'm selecting horizontal photo's. I do not know how to match the same width, height and appearence as the websites I mentioned above.
If I choose a photo that fits the width then the length is too long. Also if I choose a large photo and have to crop it then most of the detail of the photo is lost.
I'm attempting to create a mock-up for my web in Fireworks CS3 and after search Adobe and www I came across the mock up should be 1004px which would end up being 1024 with vertical scroll bar and small margins.
I also have Photoshop & Flash CS3 but should mention (if you haven't already guess it by now) I am a rookie when it comes to creating a website.
So if you can offer a solution in "Non-Tech Terms" I would appreciate it.
Thank you in advance for your time.

In the second example, the photo is set to background with a tile. The other parts are over top of the photo and done with layers with a background color setting.

I'm using a 15" Macbook Pro running OSX6.8 and cannot upgrade. I have a subscription to Adobe CC but none of these work on this so I was on with Adobe for 5 hours trying to install and launch Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Muse, and Acrobat Pro from CS6. Well, InDesign is the only one that works and I have a ton of work due! I don't have a serial number for Photoshop or Illustrator except for CS3, and they don't work. InDesign gave me no problems. Illustrator says it can't work on this machine. Photoshop needs a serial number. I'm stumped and getting anxious and freaked out. Can anyone help? Adobe Chat is down right now.

if you have a cc subscription, close ps > sign out and then back in to your cc desktop > open ps.
    ai cs6 requires:
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Adobe Creative Suite 5, CS5.5, and CS6 applications support Mac OS X v10.8 and v10.9 when installed on Intel-based systems.*
2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
2 GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)

  • Photoshop cs4 and import to iphoto problem

    Hi to all,
I would appreciate any help on this problem:
I process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
In photoshop cs3 I never encountered this problem.
The only way I can solve it is if i open the jpeg file in preview and save it again as jpeg. then i am able to import the new jpeg.
Any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
That's because you're saving it inside the iPhoto Library package and trying to import from there. You must save all RAW edited files to the desktop or outside of the iPhoto Library package. iPhoto will not import any file located inside it's library package.
If you use CS4 to edit jpgs from within iPhoto the following may be of help to you:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Download Error - Contact customer support. Indesign wont load application have gone from the control panel. CS photoshop loads and wants a serial number - and my serial number dosent work?

    Hello Bradley,
sometimes the "opm.db file" is the culprit. In this case you should delete it.
But as much as I regret it and as strange as it may seem I fear it's a challenge for Adobe's Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool.
Sometimes - for whatever reasons - CC doesn't "want" to work. In this case you should CC completely delete and reinstall by help of Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. (A try to uninstall by own resources is not enough!)
I quote: ... helps resolve installation problems for Adobe Creative Cloud and Adobe Creative Suite (CS3-CS6) applications. The tool removes installation records for prerelease installations of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications. It does not affect existing installations of previous versions of Creative Cloud or Creative Suite applications.
Please use: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html   and follow the prescribed sequence of operations
If necessary and for further questions click through http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html or http://helpx.adobe.com/de/contact.html and if "open" please use chat, I had the best experiences.

  • Using LR2 w/ Photoshop CS2 and Camera Raw 3.7

    I am using Photoshop CS2 and Camera Raw 3.7 on a Mac G4, OS X 10.4.11.
I am about to install my upgrade to Lightroom 2. Is this a bad idea?
I have read about some compatibility issues re Camera Raw, and I have also read about how to solve the issue of exporting the keywords.
Will this keyword issue fix work on my system?
What are the real-world practical implications of still having Camera Raw 3.7? I usually adjust images in Lightroom, then any further adjustment is done in Photoshop (not CR). So is the only downside going to be that if I revisit the image in Camera Raw, the adjustments will not show up? Or will it also not show up in Bridge?? And if it is only in CR, is it that the image does not have the adjustments; or does it show the adjusted image, but has just all the sliders zeroed out?
I am hot to install LR2, but I want to make sure that I am not going to open a can of worms. And yes, I could buy PS CS4 (which would get me CR 4.5), and I would like to, but I don't have a G5. And I cannot afford to buy a new desktop computer right now.
Any input would be much appreciated. Thanks.
    Dean Abramson

    >so is the LR version of RAW as good as the one in CS3?
It's far better as it has local adjustments and such. Lightroom is more equivalent to the ACR in CS4. To make changes you make to images in ACR outside Lightroom show up in Lightroom, you need to sync the metadata. ACR does not write the changes to RAW images to the Lightroom database, but it writes it into xmp sidecars either right next to the RAW file or embedded into it. So Lightroom has no idea you did anything until you specifically ask it to check for updated metadata.
Note that trying to work with both bridge/ACR and Lightroom on the same set of data will inevitably make you lose data or edits at some point as you're dealing with a synchronization issue, so be careful.

  • Saving Jpeg in Photoshop CS4 and having problems

Okay, i have been looking all over the internet and i hope it's something really foolish...
After editing a photo in Photoshop (CS4) and saving it as a JPEG / JPG, many people using windows can't open the file, and it gets the extension .JPGG ( ...?... )
If I import the picture in Iphoto first and then mail it ther is no problem.
perhaps this is quite obvious to some, but it's a mystery to me.
To update my website i need to save my JPG files to an XML folder and then flash reads the files and opens them in the site.
The JPG files i saved using photoshop won't open in the site, even worse, the site won't even load because the loader gets 'stuck'.
i tried putting them in Iphoto first because that helped with with mailing, but it doesn't seem to be working this time.
I've tried all the JPG saving options like Baseline etc. converted them to RGB ( they already were) so i'm out of options.
    ANYONE ?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I have CS3 so don't know if there's major changes to the formatting process by each version. That may be a question to ask in the Adobe support forum.
However, for a workaround you might try using the Automator workflow I created to change any image file to jpg with the sRGB color profile. Just drag the files onto the workflow icon and they will be converted. You can get it, "Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile", at Toad's Cellar. See if those jpgs will work OK. There will be some jpeg compression applied but if they are for posting on the web it may not be objectionable.

  • Photoshop 7 and Mac OS X 10.5.4

Hi I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.5.4 and Photoshop 7 crashes and Scanner software(Microtek). It looks like CS upgrade $200.00 I do not have! Has anyone had a problem with running these two together? I re installed Photoshop 7 and no luck it just crashes and Adobe or Apple does not seem to offer any updates.

    Hi mimijewelry
Photoshop 7 Doesn't work on Leopard at all. I upgraded to CS3. If you have an external firewire HD with atleast 500 gb it would be a good idea to partition it into 2 and install Tiger onto one of the partitions so that you can run Photoshop 7.

  • Upgrade to Photoshop CS5 from CS3/CS2/6.0

I purchased Adobe Photoshop 6.0, then upgraded to CS2, then CS3.
    Can I upgrade to CS5?
If so, can I install the trial and later activate it once I have the key?
Since the key is an upgrade key, what is it going to ask for to verify the fact that the CS3 version (which was an upgrade) was based on a full retail version?
The reason for all these questions is that I'm going to be upgrading from Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit. I'd like to just install Photoshop CS5 and try it out, then order the upgrade to complete the install later. I'm concerned about an upgrade not being appropriate (1) and a need to install Photoshop CS3 completely and then run the update to CS5. If I have to do that, I may just install CS3 after my Windows upgrade.
Thanks in advance for your responses. While I did see some questions about upgrading, I missed this exact scenario if it was previously posted.

The upgrade process is really quite straightforward these days - even on a new box which has never previously had Adobe software installed.
Upgrades are as good as full versions once installed. When installing upgrades, all that matters is that you have a serial number to an earlier qualifying version handy - Adobe has given up tracing this all the way back to your full version which could be up to 20 years ago. Upgrade serial numbers can only be verified by serial numbers up to 3 versions back anyway so Photoshop CS does not qualify for a CS5 upgrade.
There's no need to install older versions on a new computer before installing the CS5 upgrade version. It's actually the full code on the disk regardless of whether you purchased a full version or an upgrade - the serial number tells the installer if you've bought an upgrade or full version license.
When you enter your upgrade serial number for CS5, the installer will ask you to enter an earlier qualifying serial number (full or upgrade does not matter). I've successfully completed this exact scenario myself several times.
The only caveat to the above is that there is a world of difference in licensing terms (and serial numbers) between a suite and a standalone version. If you install a CS5 suite trial then want to keep just the Photoshop component (and enter its serial number), you'll have to uninstall the entire suite first then install the upgrade version of standalone Photoshop CS5. Then enter your CS5 serial number then verify by entering your CS3 serial number.
