Photoshop 7 running slow on Windows 8

I have Photoshop version 7 running on a new Windows 8 system. I ran in previously on a Windows 7 system. I don't know all the system details, but i know there is plenty of RAM (16 gb), plenty of space, plenty of everything, and it is compatible, however, it is dragging a lot, which it has never done. I reset it so the scratch disks are not the same as the OS (as Adobe generally suggests) and that's done nothing. It also has nothing to do with opening or working on files - there is a delay on opening items on the toolbar and opening dialogue boxes.
I have 2 hard drives - one "fast" but smaller - 104 gb, and one regular at 931 gb. I've tried installing it in both locations separately, and it behaves the same.
Any thoughts/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! (Also, I know Photoshop 7 is an older version, and if it were up to me, I'd just upgrade, but I don't get to make those decisions...)

Compatibility Mode is a Windows function and you should probably use. Photoshop 7 was not designed to work on modern OS's. There are more than just visual changes when upgrading your OS. New features are added, some old ones, and the code they depend on, are removed. Compatibility Mode helps to compensate for these differences by modifying the environment around an application to make it more friendly. This could make all the difference in the world. Or not, there could be something else going on...
Just right-click the Photoshop exe file, go to Properties and select the Compatibility tab. It should be pretty self-explanatory from there.

I followed the instructions exactly as in the article.I don’t think there is much scope for error as i did not encounter similarly named files and the described path took me exactly to the file in Program Files. I am certain I have never encountered similar problems with my laptop before. Even if I made a mistake, it would have been so easy to make that I would not recommend anyone else to try that!

  • New IMAC but Photoshop running slow

    Hi There
Could some one help me? I just brought a brand new IMAC 21.5" the base model (NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics) with 4 gb RAM. I downloaded the trial version of adobe cs5 to check if it runs ok but when I am starting things from scratch like just creating things from a blank canvas it runs so slow like trying to paint stuff and render it comes up with a loading screen it just doesn’t do it straight away. But when I am working on photos it seems to run ok. Is there away to solve this issue? Do I need to updated my RAM to make it run smooth?

The mostly likely reason Photoshop will run slow is insufficient RAM and since you downloaded the demo, you got the extended version which is a huge memory hog. I found it slow on my similarly configured notebook but the regular version runs just fine for me.
What does seem odd though is that you say it isn't slow on photos, just when you are starting from a blank slate. So I'm thinking - check the pixel size and resolution of your default blank document and compare to a loaded photo. Is the size and resolution of your blank document larger? I'm guessing it might be. That points to RAM again but if you don't need that big a document or that resolution you can reduce it.

  • Photoshop runs slow on my Mac

    Hi
I have Mac Book Pro 2010 with 8 GB Ram and all CS6 programs runs smoothly but photoshop os slow and also all text i type have gaged hard edges
how cna i fix those problems ?
    Kind Regards

What is the text layer’s anti-aliasing method (see the Options Bar)?
    Boilerplate-text:
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated?
As with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems you might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed) by keeping command-alt-shift pressed on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, cleaning caches, etc.) might also be beneficial, Onyx has been recommended for such tasks.
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html
Weeding out bad fonts never seems to be a bad idea, either. (Validate your fonts in Font Book and remove the bad ones.)

If 3rd party plug-ins are installed try disabling them to verify if one of those may be responsible for the problem.

  • Illustrator CC 17.1 running slow on windows 8.1

I have bought a new machine to speed things up. But it is running very slow, I have increased the virtula memory, allocated a scratch disk on a separate SSD. The machine is a top spec, i7 4th generation processor, 16GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB GDDR5.
Each time I try to move things it has a lag and often has to try to select again, making it very dificult to work.

    Hi
I Have moved from Apple to WIndows 8.1 due to MBP 2011 GPU issues & Apple ignoring the issue.
Anyway the samsung is as follows:
    NP870Z5G-X01
    WIn 8.1 x64
    16GB RAM 1600kingston
    i7-4700HQ @ 2.4GHZ
    Intel 4600 graphics / NVidia GT750M
The machine is 2 years newer than my old 17" MBP so should whizz through the tasks in illustrator but has the same problem, lagging when moving, also when zooming in and out. I noticed that the Nvidia card is not used in Illustrator just Photoshop. It really is slow though and painful to use.
I hope someone can sort it out soon

  • IMac running slow and windows partition not showing

I have an iMac 12.1, 2.5 ghz, i5, 4 gb ram,  500 gb hd (41 gb used) running 10.7.4.  We installed windows parallel and windows 7 about three months ago. We rarely used windows and now windows doesn't work, although the icons are there. I tried to uninstall via boot camp and the partition does not show. The iMac is now running extremely slow except when running in safe mode.
How can I delete or reinstall windows and speed up the iMac?
    Thank you

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when you try to launch Parrallels Desktop.
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partitiion & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Permissions.

  • Same machine, running bootcamp, photoshop runs great on windows 7 but laggy on Mac OSX mavericks

Dont know why this is happening but on mac OSX mavericks photoshop CS6 and photoshop CC 2014 run laggy. 2014 is even worse than CS6. I tried both Yosemite and downgraded to mavericks to see if it would help and it didn't. If I draw a rectangle on a layer and drag it around, it jumps around the screen rather than being smooth. On the same computer Im running bootcamp Windows 7 and CC 2014 runs great on there so its something on the mac side. Any ideas on what this is? It can't be drivers for mavericks at this point because its been out for over a year now I think they would have fixed it.

  • Photoshop running slow

My photoshop is running really slow.  I am running Tiger OS X on my G5.  The capacity is 76G and available space is 22G.  I have photoshop G3.  I have tried to clear the cache on my hard drive (not sure it helped).  I have tried changing the amount of memory photoshop uses and the amount of the cache photoshop is assigned.  It seems to be getting worse.  Can someone else suggest something to fix this problem?
    Thanks

I have 272 fonts...I hate to sound really stupid but where are the icc profiles.  I know I have seen them before but I can't find them right now.
I have had this problem before and had fixed it but I can't remember what I did.  This is a work computer and I seem to be the only one with this problem.
We don't have any MAC support here that is why I am trying this route.
    Thanks

  • Why PB application run slower in Windows 7 than XP?

    Hi there,
Why PB application in windows 7 64-bit slower than in XP? Is something that I need to change in OS level or PB?
    The PB version 12.x
    Any suggestion will be appreciated.
    thx!

    Hi Patrick;
I would have to say in general that in all my W7 versus XP testing that PB runs about 15-20% slower on W7 than XP.
Now, this can be counteracted by stepping up the memory and CPU power on your W7 machine.
However, newer W7 machines speeds can be severely degraded by low RAM configuration and in particular poor printer drivers. The latter is what determines the DataWindow speed as the DWO utilizes the current printer driver to visualize the DW primary buffer. So a poor performing print driver can not only slow your application down but make the DW Painter in the IDE very slow to open

  • Apps are running slow since windows 10 update, facebook, solitaire etc.

Like most people I went through the lengthy process of updating to Windows 10 yesterday. The update went smoothly. The problem I am having is that the embedded solitaire games from the start menu are hanging and running very slow. Also, sad as it sounds, some of the games on facebook are also very juddery and slow. I have checked to make sure I havent got too many things running in the background but nothing changed. Anyone got any  ideas?

  • IMacs running slow off Windows Server 2008

Currently the Creative Director and I are the only ones at our company working on Macs. We both are running OSX 10.6.8 on iMacs and we are having major slow loading time in Finder and very, very slow loading time working with Adobe files (PSDs/AIs/INDDs).
The company I work for has been bought out by another company and they had their tech guys come in to install a server.. I have recently found out that it is a Windows Server 2008. We were told to transfer our files to this server and ever since have been having problems. I have tried to communicate with some of the techs and they either complain about Macs or are not that familiar with Macs. They don't have any other designers at their company, so I am not sure how to get them to understand the issue.
I have done some research and found others with similar problems, but I am not really finding a solution or a discussion that is very recent. I think this is a problem that has been around for awhile, but we are new to it. The problem seems to be with the SMB sharing.
We would be grateful if anyone had any insight or infomation regarding working off a Windows Server 2008 from a Mac or whether we should recommend us working off a Mac Server which is backed up to the main server.
    Thanks!
    Aa

    Appreciate it Ed.
I let our boss know about Extreme ZIP and forwarded the link to our IT team. Although we haven't gotten a response back yet, I am thinking that a mac server would be a cheaper purchase overall since it wouldn't be a reoccuring monthly charge.
If we were to convert one an extra Mac Pros to a Lion Server, is it possible to have that backed up or connected to the Windows Server 2008? Or would we need to do that the Mac Pro. Not sure how to word this, my lack of experience in servers shines through here.
Really trying to save us from switching to PCs, thinking if we can convert the Mac Pro to a Lion Server it would be our least expenseive route.
    Thanks again,
    Aaron

  • Firefox 4.0 running slow on windows xp netbook

After recently updated firefox to 4.0 it runs very slowly. This occurs even with only one tab open. The mouse moves slowly over the firefox window and typing an email in a web based email (live.com and exchange webmail (I know its probably best run in IR but ...) is very frustrating because the cursor lags behind by 2 or 3 words at least. The computer is a asus eeepc 1101HA with windows xp.

I also had this problem on asus eeepc. Try uncheck checkbox 'Use hardware acceleration when available' in Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> General. It works on my notebook...

  • Is ORACLE slower on Windows then on Linux ?

    Hi,
I'm suppose to choose the platform for Oracle .... Linux or Windows 2008 Server ...
Ones we've installed Oracle on Windows 2003 Server and it was really slower like 200-300% ..... we did simple default install
Does anyone know if this is a fact that Oracle will run slower on Windows platform then on any other ? Any experiance with that ? If we are talking about 5-10% then this is ok and I'll stick with windows ...
Cause I know how to deal with windows much more then how to deal with Linux admin, install and other stuff ...
    Thank you...

Oracle on Windows uses a thread modelThat's actually one of the few "positives" about running Oracle on Windows . . .
rather than providing a performance comparison between Linux and Windows.Fine, try here:

"Roby Sherman performed an exhaustive study of the speed of Oracle on Linux and Microsoft Windows using identical hardware. Sherman currently works for Qwest Communications in the data technologies group of IT architecture and transversal services. He is a recognized expert in designing, delivering, tuning, and troubleshooting n-tier systems and technology architecture components of various size and complexity based on Oracle RDBMS technology.
Sherman concludes that Linux was over 30% faster:
"From perspective of performance, RedHat Linux 7.2 demonstrated an average performance advantage of 38.4 percent higher RDBMS throughput than a similarly configured Windows 2000 Server in a variety of operational scenarios." Sherman also notes: "Another point of contention was Window's lack of consistency between many database administrative functions (e.g., automated startup, shutdown, service creation, scripting) compared to what DBAs are already used to in many mainstream UNIX environments (e.g., Solaris and HP-UX)."
Mr. Burleson's comments seem to be out of line. No, I'm right on the money.
*I've seen enough companies get burned by Windows (unplanned outages, data corruption) to speak with confidence.*
Bottom line, it's malfeasence to recommend any OS platform for a production database application that has an unsavory history.
It does not take a genius to figure out that an OS with this kind of history should not be used with any data that you care about:
    - "blue screen of death"
    - legandary security vulnerabilities
    - memory leaks you could drive a truck through
    - Patching weekly
    - The world's most incompetant tech support

Good point on the screen saver.
Comparing Windows 2000, released in March 2000, with Red Hat 7.2 which was released in ... sorry, forgot the date, but I put in a couple servers running that release of Linux into service in 2001. I was kind of hoping that you would have an article which pits Windows 3.1 against the original Linux release. :-)
You might be happy to know that things have changed significantly since Windows 3.1, and also significantly since Windows 2000. There were many improvements in Windows 2003 over Windows 2000 (I happened to read a couple large books on the subject of Windows 2003 Server a couple years ago). This page contains a couple links that you may want to browse:

Regarding blue screen of death, those are rather rare with versions of Windows since the release of Windows 2000. The last blue screen that I saw on a server happened when an ECC memory module started experiencing multiple hardware bit errors which could not be corrected by the ECC memory logic. The server hardware forced the blue screen to prevent data corruption. The previous blue screen? A Windows NT 4.0 Server (circa 1996) when a new RAID controller was added to the server.
Regarding legandary security vulnerabilities, well I don't think that it quite qualifies as legendary. However, given the wide usage of Windows (particularly by people just starting to learn to use computers), there will very definitely be more security issues to contend with - Windows often offers a larger attack surface than other operating systems. Yes, there have been many security problems over the years.
Regarding memory leaks you could drive a truck through, I have to say that in a server environment I have not experienced that problem. On a desktop environment, I would say that it is typically the fault of poorly written applications which cause the memory leaks. Windows will often clean up after the poorly written applications when they are closed.
Regarding patching weekly, yes there are typically frequent security and bug fixes released for the Windows platform, but I suggest that if someone is patching weekly on a server, there is probably a larger problem to be addressed.
Regarding the world's most incompetant tech support, I am not sure that I follow your logic:

No definitions were found for incompetant.
    Suggestions:
    - Make sure all words are spelled correctly.
    - Search the Web for documents that contain 'incompetant'"
As previously stated, consideration should be given to the operating system which is most familiar to the OP.
