No, once again.
iPhoto blurs photos that it straightens -- in a significant and unusable way. Elements does not.
True about panorama and photo stitching. But I was just describing the sorts of things I use Elements for, and why I like to go to Elements first, not last.
Yes, filters might very well be easily applied before importing to iPhoto. That's what I'm currently doing now as a workaround (or re-importing as a new file). But I shouldn't have to. It's supposed to be an external editor accessible from right in the application itself. The application should continue to function as advertised and expected after using this feature. And art doesn't always follow a direct pattern or strict routine. What if someone decides to load a bunch of shots into iPhoto -- which is his/her preferred method for organizing photos and he/she likes to keep them all in one place? This is, in fact, a very common way in which iPhoto is used, and is the whole point behind the idea of an option of using an external program to edit within iPhoto.
So, the photos are in iPhoto where they go, and then he/she decides (maybe a few weeks later when sitting down to really fine-tune things), "hey, you know, I'd like to take advantage of that 'external editor from within iPhoto' option"? If this happens, then the only way to get iPhoto to behave properly with the files is to either "save as" from Elements or export from iPhoto, and then in either case reimport the new files. Sometimes you do some tweaking in iPhoto, then go to another program, and then come back to where your photos "belong". Then you might want to tweak some more. I often find that iPhoto's tools, as simple as they are, add a nice little something at the end of a piece I've been working on elsewhere, often in the livening colors or optimizing levels department, which ties the whole thing together at the end. Sort of like how a nice bit of reverb on a submix or some compression on the two-buss will get a song to gel perfectly at the end of a mix. We're not using darkrooms here anymore, or recording straight to tape. The whole point of digital is to be able to come back to it the next morning and give it a second look/listen, and back off on those faders if need be once your mind and eyes/ears have returned to the light of day.
Your sarcasm with the "etc." is not appreciated. If you'd like to help, help. If not, don't.
The reasons I posted about this were:
1) To give a warning to those discussing how easy it is to have the "best of both worlds" that once they've edited in the external, the iPhoto editing won't work as expected anymore
2) To ask if anyone knew of a way that I had not been able to find that would simply turn off this behavior, treating externally edited files as if they were newly imported ones -- or was it just a bug?
3) To see if there were any possible workarounds in the way in which photos were saved, labeled, imported, or whatever that would perhaps keep this change in behavior from occurring.
It looks like, as TD has pointed out, it is a bug that will need to be fixed. And there don't appear to be any ways of doing things with the files in which externally edited photos will be treated as newly imported ones.
But there's no point in defending this clear bug in iPhoto by acting like the limits that this bug have placed on us are really just a better workflow. That's absurd. The point is, iPhoto is the photo organizer application. If you use it, it's where your photos reside, and where they end up. It sure would be nice to be able to use the various useful, nondestructive tools that you normally can use with iPhoto once you have used one of iPhoto's supposed features, editing with an external application from within it. The fact that it doesn't work properly is not the end of the world, and exporting and reimporting works fine, if a bit clumsily and with some extra, seemingly unnecessary steps. Hopefully they'll fix this in a future release.

I tried it and nothing changed. Even when I right click on an indiviual image all it does is duplicate it. Iphoto seems to be recognizing my external hard drive as an editor......cannot get photoshop except to drag a picture into photoshop from iphoto, and once I have worked on it and saved it to iphoto I cant find it anywhere.

  • Need help with Color Profiles between Photoshop and iPhoto

Hey guys, I'm a photographer and have always used Photoshop in comination with iPhoto. I am having great difficulty lately with color profiles randomly changing within albums of pictures. I need all of my images to be in sRGB, but some somehow end up in Adobe RGB. It seems to happen at random. Apple seems to think it's an Adobe problem. Adobe isn't sure what to do. Anybody aware of any known issues between CS5 and iPhoto using OS 10.8.4 with regard to color profiles and how to fix them?

The article also says you need Scribus to then further process the SVG file.
@shaunamm You need to open the SVGin Illustrator, not place it. But I doubt that you will be able to get the effects in Illustrator.

I downloaded Photoshop Elements and now when I ope IPhoto I can no longer use the quick fix buttons. Elements immediately opens and I have to import the photo to do anything to it, even rotate it.
Do I need to take Photoshop off my computer and put it on an external so that I use it only when I want to maniupulate photos?  Will my IPhoto return to its original ways?

    Hi zabawa,
Can you please tell that whether on clicking "Edit" button in Iphoto launches the Photoshope Elements. If this is the case then in Iphoto preferences external editor is set as  "Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor". You can change that by clicking "Preferenes>Advanced>Edit Photos" and change it to "In I Photo".
If this is not the case then please tell on what action in Iphoto it  launches the PSE.
    Thanks,

  • Issues with color between Photoshop and iPhoto

Can anyone tell me why when creating a "layout" page in Photoshop I have correct color, but if I export that as a .jpg and then add it to iPhoto to print it out it looks are harsh and high contrast?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The usual reason for this is that you’re using a different colour space in Photoshop. Try using sRGB in both, see if it helps.

  • Working with photoshop and iPhoto

I use Photoshop for my main editing platform, but have started to use iPhoto (recent mac convert) and have enjoyed the more integrated publishing capabilities.
My question: when I import photos into iPhoto from my Photoshop database on my laptop (same machine), is a entirely new file created?
My concern is over doubling the size of my database with has several thousand photos.
Are there any tutorials or other information about using both of these applications available?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

In iPhoto 5 it would be best to work things the other way 'round to coordinate the two programs. Have iPhoto import and organize the photos. Use the edit in external editor command to send the images to Photoshop. Once done editing in Photoshop, save, and the changes will appear in iPhoto. It's a smooth, seemless workflow. iPhoto will create a backup image so that you can revert. The photos will be stored in your Pictures folder sorted by year, month, date. iPhoto is touchy about this structure so it's best not to muck about in these folders. I hear this is different in iPhoto 6 but the concept still applies, let iPhoto do the manangement.

  • Imported RAW images badly corrupted, looks like red paint splashed all over the sky.  Photoshop and Iphoto have no problem with the images from my D800E.  Aperture worked fine for me in June with the same camera.  The Nikon software shows no problem.

I am having a problem importing my images into Aperture 3 from my Nikon D800E.  The images appear as if red paint was splashed across the sky.  The Nikon software used to transfer from the camera does not show this problem and Photoshop 6 is fine with the images exported as jpg from the Nikon software.  Aperature does not even like the jpg images usable by Photoshop.  I am suspecting that Aperture is not correctly using the camera raw file.  Also, the histograms are radically different between the corrupted images and the Photoshop (good) versions.  Aperture worked just fine for me in June with the same camera.  All drivers and software are current as of this posting.  Anyone else out there seen this before??

Are you sure you do not have Highlight Hot & Cold Areas turned on? (View->Highlight Hot & Cold Areas)?
The bug in Digital Camera raw only affected Raw images. In your first post you wrote:
Aperature does not even like the jpg images usable by Photoshop
If the JPG's have the same problem then it isn't this bug.

I had somebody  work on my OS 10.9.2 to speed it up. He failed and now  Preview, Textedit, App Store, Mail (crashes) and Contacts  do not work anymore. I can still use Safari, Firefox, Word, Photoshop and iPhoto etc. How do I get the Apple programs fixed again?

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

Hi, Yes you are correct in iPhoto Prefernces, Advanced tab editing I used to have iPhoto and "Use external editor.". It changed to iPhoto and iPhoto Library. I have einstaleed PSE 9 and downloaded the update.  There is still no lkink to external editor in the drop down box.  Have I done something wrong inadvertently or is there a clitch?  can you reinstal iPhoto.  I am new to Macs. Every thing came preinstalled.  it is the top of the range system with 16 Gb of rRAM, 2 Tb hard drive to top graphics card etc.  I used to be on Windows PC.  Have more than 27,000 photos on the system.  Much apprecite your reply and interest in this.

You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

This may be of help to you:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Photoshop CS and iPhoto 5

I set the iPhoto Preferences to open in Photoshop when double clicking a thumbnail. When the photo opens in Photoshop, I make the necessary changes, flatten, and save (as jpg, same name). The Thumbnail in iPhoto does not change. If I open the photo in an Edit window, it is obvious that it did not change. The iPhoto Library within the Finder shows the photo to be in 2 locations, the original location and within the “Originals” folder as if a change had occurred. Also, the iPhoto “Photos” menu has “Revert to Original” enabled confirming that iPhoto believes that a change has occurred.
A Command-click on the Photoshop photo’s title bar indicates that the directory of the new revised photo is where it is supposed to be, although opening the photo in Preview confirms that it did not change. Quitting photoshop and using iPhoto to once again open the same photo for editing reveals a picture of a revised photo and again shows it to be in the same directory but both iPhoto and Preview confirms that it has not changed. It is as Photoshop saved the revised photo somewhere else but it won’t tell me where.
Finally, if I tell Photoshop to “Save As” and choose another location (e.g. the Desktop) the result is a revised photo on the Desktop but not in iPhoto.
And, finally again, if I Quit Photoshop, re-launch, and display the Photoshop browser, the Photoshop thumbnail for the photo in question shows an obviously changed photo and double-clicking the Photoshop thumbnail opens an obviously changed photo. Again, both the browser window and a Command-click on the photo’s title bar shows the correct directory of the original iPhoto location but the revised photo is not really there. Where is it?

    Ralph:
How long has this been occurring? Did is just start and if so what updates were run shortly before it started?
Are you using iPHoto 5 or was that a typo as you're in the iPhoto 6 forum. If you're in V5 look for the folder for that day and see if there's an Originals folder in it along with an image file. If there's no Originals folder then the edit is not getting done as intended. When a photo is edited thru iPhoto the original file is copied to a new folder (Originals) in that day folder and the modified version is in the top level of the day folder.
If you can't resolve it try rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager. It rebuilds the library by creating a new one and leaving the original untouched. It will bring in any orphaned files it finds into a roll and album. If your PS edits are getting saved somewhere in the library they should get included in the orphaned group.
