Photoshop and Maker Notes

I currently have CS2.  I have been thinking of upgrading to CS4 but would like to know if it solves one of the issues I have with CS2.  That is, that CS2 deletes the Maker Notes section of my metadata in jpg files.  I can't find any setting that would change this.  Normal EXIF, IPTC, and XMP are intact.  I'm using Save As not Save for the Web.  I don't want any of my metadata deleted, but in particular MakerNotes is where manufacturers put the lens information, which is not stored elsewhere with my cameras.
Judy

There is no such setting, because there is no way to maintain all the maker note data.   If the manufacturer documents parts of the maker note format, we will parse that data and move it out of the maker note and into standard EXIF or XMP metadata.
But maker notes are mostly undocumented, and frequently contain offsets into the file that cannot be preserved.  If you attempt to preserve the unknown maker note data, an application reading the file that does understand the maker note content is very, very likely to crash (which happened when Photoshop originally preserved maker notes).
All you can do is ask that the manufacturer document their maker note data, or move their metadata to a standard location instead of a maker note. (preferably the later)

  • Images in Photoshop and Lightroom not matching on external display

On my external display the same image viewed in Photoshop and Lightroom is diplayed differently.
    My set up:
Macbook pro running Mountain Lion (10.8.4), DVI connected NEC Spectraview 271. Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 5. Both displays calibrated using Spectraview 5 software and an Eye one pro puck. Photoshop working space is Prophoto RGB and is set to preserve embedded profiles. I'm using Andrew Rodney's and Bill Atkinson's test images to try and figure this out.
    Behaviour:
With the same image displayed in Lightroom and Photoshop on the Macbook screen they match perfectly. If I drag the Lightroom window across to the NEC it changes (as you would expect - richer colours & higher contrast). If I drag the Photoshop image across to the NEC it also changes but no longer matches the Lightroom image (cooler colours).
So, I don't really know whether Photoshop or Lightroom is displaying correctly, and whether they or the OS are to blame. I had assumed it was Lightroom as the image is more pleasing but this obviously isn't necessarily the case. What is clear is that somewhere there is a difference between how Lightroom and Photoshop are converting the image numbers for monitor display on the NEC.
Does anyone know how to find out what display profile Lightroom and Photoshop are using?
Is it possible they are both using the same profile but one is not using the NEC hardware calibration? (Seems unlikely as I assume it would be impossible for the NEC to be using different internal look up tables at the same time)
Could the OS be tripping up one and not the other in some way?
Could the X-rite software (which I don't use but is installed) somehow be interfering?
Anybody able to shed some light?
    Thanks for any help,
    Tom

I'm having trouble with Lightroom 5 soft proofing with reds too.  To rid my propossed print of a gamut warning I must totally desaturate or change my paper profile to glossy (or both).  This is odd because my monitor is calibrated, I'm using the correct paper profiles etc and when I ignore the gamut warning my prints are looking good. This isn't helpful to you but at least your not alone....

  • " This version of CS6 Photoshop and Illustrator not compatible with my computer"

CS6 Photoshop and Illustrator are not compatible with my computer. Is there a downloadable version of CS6 Photoshop and Illustrator that is? I downloaded in both the CS6  Design and Web Premium and individually, neither worked. I have a Mac OS X Version 10.6.8

No. if that message comes up, you are running on an old first generation Core Duo processor on an iMac/MacBook/ Mac mini and it simply is not compatible, no matter what version of OSX. It lacks specific chip components required for the code.

  • Photoshop and InDesign not consistent identifying colors in alternate spaces

Pantone 413 (as an example) in Photoshop has a CMYK equivalent of C-22, M-17, Y-24, K-0, and an RGB reading of 197,196, 187, and a hex #c5c4bb.
Pantone 413 in InDesign gives me the following conversions: CMYK 0-0-9-20, RGB 209-208-295, and HEX # D1D0C3.
There are additional differences in Adobe Illustrator. 413 is not the only color giving me inconsistent color readings across apps.
Both apps are set in Bridge to North American Pre-Press2.
What is the most accurate method of determining CMYK, RGB, and HEX equivalents of PMS colors?
    InDesign/Photoshop/AI CS4, OS X 10.5.8, Intel iMac.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Post 2 is a valid solution and the best solution, but:
If you are not comfortable using Lab values for spot color CMYK builds – that is you would prefer to use Pantone CMYK book values – you need to avoid using the Pantone Solid Libraries.
(The Pantone Solids were not really designed for CMYK print design. So many of these colors simply cannot be replicated in the CMYK color space. Trying to achieve a close match may result in disappointment)
Use either a Pantone Bridge library, or the more traditional Solid to Process library.
However in Photoshop your troubles may not end there. If you have an RGB Photoshop image, the color values will not hold in InDesign. The reason is these are CMYK libraries. When used in RGB color space they will be mapped to RGB. When placed in InDesign, they will be remapped to CMYK on output using color management and the book values do not hold.
    Confused yet? Don't feel alone...

  • PS4 and Cintiq not playing well together

This problem relates to the Cintiq 21 UX & Photoshop CS4 ONLY!
I have a dual monitor setup: Cintiq 21 & NEC 19 LCD Opticlear Miltisync 90GX2. Both monitors are driven by separate ATI Radeon HD2600XT cards with 512MB video RAM. The system CPU is an AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual core 6000+ chip. I have loaded what I believe to be the most current drivers from this web site.
Start PS4 on the Cintiq side; load ANY image; get image with 6 rectangles overlaid and each rectangle is divided diagonally in half from URHC to LLHC. Lower half is good image; upper hald is either a solid color, grossly pixellated, or gibberish. Drag the image a bit and as long as it is being dragged it is a perfect image; stop dragging and it returns to the image with 6 rectangles. Drag across to the NEC monitor and image is sharp and clear while dragging but goes transparent upon release of mouse.
Start PS4 on the NEC side and all is as advertised. Drag only the image over to Cintiq and it is still good. Now drag PS4 over to the Cintiq side and all is still good. Open another image on the Cintiq side and problem repeats.
This problem is fully repeatable, does not happen with any other software, and renders PS4 virtually useless. PS3 works as advertised and always has.  I've done 4 installs of CS4 to see if it was the problem including a thorough registry cleaning between installs. Situation is constant across installs. Oddly, Bridge does not exhibit the problem.  I'm sending to Wacom as well.  I provided 2 jpgs of what the images look like.
Any and all advice greatly appreciated
    dave

Both monitors use the DVI connection  on the respective cards, so no,
not at this time. Perhaps if I can locate an adapter I may be able to do
so. However, Photoshop CS3 has absolutely no problems with this set up
nor does Bridge CS4, only Photoshop. As Bridge loads with Photoshop and
is not a separate install, I'm thinking that while it could have
something to do with the cards/driver, there must be something more.
    However, I've been wrong before  . . . . .

  • Photoshop failed to quit and is not responding

I've had a nasty problem for the past few days that seems to be getting gradually worse. ie it now happens within a few minutes of openning Photoshop, whereas before it was happenning after an hour or two of working on an image....
At some point while working on a moderately complex .psd (roughly 70mb with some 15 layers) Photoshop hangs and Force Quit Applications tells me that Photoshop is not responding. I can't identify anything particular that i'm doing that triggers it.... i use a fairly wide variety of tools and filters and the hang doesn't seem to be triggered by anything specific.
I force Photoshop to quit, and it disappears from the Force Quit Application list. However, after quitting, I cannot open .psd or .jpg files from Bridge or from Finder. Raw files open up ok from Bridge into Camera Raw. And, when I try to shut down or restart my machine i get: " Logout has timed out - The application Photoshop failed to quit and is not responding." so the only way to restart is to force a shut down with the power button. After restarting the Mac Photoshop works ok again for a a while and then the problem happens again.
I have repaired my disk permissions and run Diskwarrior over both my Mac HD ad the external Firewire drive where all my images live - which didn't identify anything out or the ordinary.
Any thoughts on what else I can do to eliminate this problem would be v gratefully received
    I am working on a Dual-Core Intel MacPro with 9GB memory, running OS 10.4.11 and Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 and Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9

Neil, just for reference the Cron script problem was fixed in 10.4.2 and should be run on boot if they haven't already. This doesn't mean that running cocktail occasionally to make sure doesn't have value or to run the maintance scripts early doesn't help (it wont hurt).
    Nick
The 3 Gb limitation is a limitation of 32bit operating systems and software. Photoshop can't address (use) more than 3Gb regardless of how much you have free or installed. OSX 10.4 is kind of 64bit but not completly, it has the ability to remap memory so EACH program can use a max of 3Gb. so in your case with 5ish Gb used PS is using 3Gb, Safari is using a bit and the OS is prob using most of the rest.
Looking at what you posted the only two figures your really interested in is the Used and Free (which add up to approx 9Gb). The fact that the used number doesn't change from the several files open and the liquify filter opening indicates to me that it has already grabbed as much memory as it can( it's using 3Gb of the 5.52, the rest is the OS etc).
Simply put PS IS running out of memory. You can help this by putting the memory allocation in the PS preferences higher (the OS will use other areas of memory so it wont cause a problem) and make sure the scratch disk is set to a drive with plenty of space. But keep in mind the Liquify filter is VERY memory intensive so you may not be able to use it with lots of files open.

The newest version of CS2 is CS5. And it was made very clear that these applications would not run in Lion. Not only by Apple, but on all sorts of communities and websites. It has been a long time coming - PowerPC apps were outdated six years ago. Lion does not support Rosetta, and therefore not PPC apps.
you have to options. Go back to Snow Leopard or upgrade your software. (MS Office 2004 and older will not run either).

Note that this is boilerplate text.
If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,

exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster).

I have a comment.  I am very upset with Photoshop and all your tutorials regarding the quick select tool.  I have watched many tutorials and read instructions until I am blue in the face.  This tool does not work.  It is all over the place and all of your tutorials make it look so simple.  How can you advertise this as a viable tool when it just doesn't work?

It is all over the place and all of your tutorials make it look so simple.
This is a user to user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by.
How can you advertise this as a viable tool when it just doesn't work?
Concluding something does not work because you fail at using it is not necessarily always justified.
The Quick Selection Tool certainly has limitations, but your post seems to be more about venting than trouble-shooting – otherwise you might have posted an image where you failed to get an expected result.

I just installed Photoshop elements 11. Install of the application was fine. When I clicked to open Organizer, I received a messaging indicating that it was out of date and coudl not be upgraded. How can I address/fix this?

Thank you for the replies. I'm afraid neither one helped.
kglad, I never get to any error code so your link can't help.
Jeff, I looked at your link and
    a) again, I never make it to an error code
    b) I'm definitely connected to the internet
    c) I can access secure sites; I tried connecting with the firewall disabled and the same thing happened, so I don't believe it's a firewall issue.
    d) I don't understand the checking host sites - this is far too complicated for a novice user. It should not be this difficult to get a software running. I don't want to mess with these kinds of settings.
    e) I followed the steps for the global sign in root CA and my screen looks the same as the picture here.
I can't activate the software offline as there is no option to generate a response code when I click on having trouble connecting to the internet. All I get is a prompt to change my password.
If the problem were simply connectivity from my computer, then why does the box completely freeze? Can't cancel, can't click on the little X to close it, can't right click on the box to close it. I have to reboot every single time. I know others have had the same problem and I haven't found any answers that I could apply.
I don't understand for the life of me why Adobe does not have TELEPHONE customer support. I have spent 2 days on this, this is crazy.
