Photoshop and Powerful Machines

Some eons ago, I was a PS user and found my then-current machine had features which PS was not using. Cannot remember the fine detail, we are talking PS5 or 6...
So, now I am contemplating buying a new i7 based machine with umpteen GB of memory and super graphics board. All these raise questions: can PS (and Lightroom) use the speed features of the i7, can they use the umpteen GB, switch into the graphics stuff.
I am fed up with the P4 3.2GHz, 3GB, GeForce 9800GT platform I have - it stumbles and makes me wait... will I end up finding things not much better on a platform potentially 50 times faster? Or is 50 times faster just a dream?

The short answer is "yes", Photoshop can use all that with a 64-bit OS.
But get 2 or 3 big physically separate drives for scratch, etc, in addition to the system drive.

Photoshop and Time Machine

I was wondering if it were possible to use my Time Machine disk as a Scratch disk in photoshop? and would it cause any problems with the drive?

You could use a +*separate partition+* that way, without any data conflicts, but it would be a bit risky to mix that with your TM backups, especially as the disk gets near full. If you were to suddenly add a lot of data at just the wrong time, TM may not have room to maneuver, and crash. This is rare, but does happen. And, as TM fills the available space, that would limit the amount you can use for Photoshop.
Of course, be sure to exclude that partition from TM, via TM Preferences > Options.
The downside would be contention for the disk while a TM backup is running. That could slow both TM and Photoshop considerably. And Photoshop will be slower over a USB or FireWire connection than on an internal disk anyway, so it would be even worse.

If prefs are the same as Settings on a MAC, OK, it would have been more
clear to me if you had said Settings since I didn't see anything related to
prefs. On a PC, I know what you mean, On a MAC, wasn't sure.

Will time machine reinstall photoshop and other softwares that i have added on my iMac ?

I am backing up my disk with time machine so i can fomat my imac and reinstall Lion as i expirience some problems with the faction of my imac !

What Mac Pro specs are best for Photoshop and Lightroom?

I'm about to cross over from PC to Mac. I've got up to 4 grand to blow on it and would like to spend it as wisely as possible. I've decided to take the Mac Pro route, but am unsure what configuration I should go for to keep Photoshop and Lightroom working smoothly. My image file sizes are usually around the 300 Mb mark but they often rise to 700 Mb or more when layers are involved. My so-called powerful Dell PC struggled with these sizes.
Should I do the obvious and go for bucket loads of RAM and as powerful a processor as possible, or are there more effective moves? For example, would 8 core be a worthy improvement over quad core?
My image library is stored on separate drives so I could hold back on hard disc space. If any wiser head can advise I would be grateful. Just don't make the answers too techy. I'm no computer boffin.

1. Don't buy a MAC PRO now. New ones are to be released in the next weeks (maybe already today as today is Apples WWDC Opening)
2. Lightroom and Photoshop can use all processor cores you have. So I would go with the cheapest two CPU Model. As an upgrade by example from 2.26 to 2.66 Ghz (current Model) will cost you more then 1400$ for only 15% more processor power which results in maybe 7--10% faster application perfromance.
3. Don't buy extras at the Apple store.
4. For the saved 1400$:
4a. get from a third party provider a total of 10-16 GB of RAM (10 are normally sufficient)
4b. Additionally I would suggest to get 2 fast SSD Disks with 128 GB (or if you can afford it) 256 GB . Put them in a RAID 0 Array. Put your OSX Files and Lightroom Catalog, Caches and current work files on it.
4c. Get two 2 Terabyte Drives and run them as RAID 1 for your pictures. And an additional 2 GB Extra External Firewire 800 or Better eSata Drive for Backup purposes.
Have fun with a very fast machine.
Additional question: How are your current storage devices connected to you computer: USB, eSATA , Ethernet or Firewire?
If you don't know what some things mean, go to a good 3rd Party Apple Seller who gives you fair prices for upgrades.

Can anyone recommend a process for moving just my OS and Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom to the SSD?

I have an early 2011 MBP running Mountain Lion. I just removed the superdrive and added an SSD. I want to use it to boot from and also run Photoshop and Lightroom from. Can anyone recommend a process for moving my OS and those programs to the SSD?

I'm assuming your doing this because of data you don't want pernament on the SSD as they can' be scrubbed like hard drives can.
Disconnect any other drives.
1: Format the SSD 1 partition, click the box, option GUID and OS X extended journaled as the format.
2: Download Carbon Copy Cloner.
3: Clone your MacintoshHD partition to a blank powered external drive also formatted the same as above.
4: Hold option/alt key and boot the machine (wired or built in keyboard) and then select the clone to boot from,
5: Once in the clone, click it's drive name and change the name if it's the same as the OS X boot volume.
6: On the clone, head to System Preferences > Accounts and create a new Admin account.
7: If you need to move files between accounts on the clone, see this. Combine two+ Users Accounts on the same machine (be careful that your selecting the correct clones other account)
8: Once your moving files on the clone is complete, then log into the new user account and delete the old user account.
9: Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the clone to the SSD.
10: Use Disk Utiltiy to repair permissions on all drives.
The SSD should be moved to the HD slot and the HD to the optical slot and used as a file drive.
CCC has a option to not include certain folders like the other user account you don't want, however I tend not to recommend things that are not too far out of line with Apple's ways of doing things as it usually results in bad things occuring. Somewhere in OS X it's recorded of that other user account, so it might still show up in logins and such.
Also you may want to transfer some files to the other account, so that's why I recommend this method.

Can MacBook Air serve as my main and only machine?

I'm planning to buy a MacBook Air as my MAIN and ONLY machine. But I was wondering if it will work out or not. Ill be surfing the web, YouTube, Facebook, photoshop, a little bit of music NO gaming... What do you guys think?? Also is 11" worth the portability over the small screen?

Considering that the current range of MacBook Air models are almost as powerful as the desktops of a generation or two ago - which were more than adequate for the vast majority of users - there is no reason that a MBA cannot be an only system. However, it would be wise to esnure that you opt for a model with 4Gb RAM (thus, not the base 11" model) and ensure that you also select one with a suitably large drive capacity. The SSD can be upgraded later if you run out of space, but the upgrade is expensive.
You would probably also be wise to add an external optical drive for those occasions you have need of one, since you won't have another system who's drive you can share from the MBA, but almost any external USB optical will work, so you're not tied to Apple's Superdrive offering.
You might also find that the 11 or 13 inch screen is a bit too limiting, so an external monitor might be worth considering. For this you'll need not just the monitor, but also the appropriate (preferably DVI) mini DisplayPort adapter.
I really like the portability of the 11" MBA, but for a sole machine, I think portability is less important than screen size, so if deciding to go this route, I'd pick the 13" model with 4Gb RAM and 256Gb SSD. It wouldn't be the ultimate in performance, but still remarkably capable.

A Cloud subscription provides for installing working installations on two machines. You can have mixed operating systems (both Windows and Apple's OX).

Color Conversion Problems between Illustrator and Photoshop (and Mac and PC)

Hi guys (and gals) Hope someone can help me here.
Got an issue working with a web design companywho when opening my eps logo file from Illustrator (I'm running all CS5.5 they're running CS4) into their version of Photoshop the color values are different. I'm not talking about 'not looking the same' but when clicking on the colors they have different numeric values. I'm running Mac OS X ad they're running a Windows based OS.
My Illustrator file is in RGB mode. It has an Adobe RGB profile attached to it. I've set the web design company's PC version of Photoshop color settings to Adobe RGB and preseve embedded profiles as a setting.
However the conversion issue still happens. Tried exporting my color palatte as a .ase swatch file and imorting a new swatch set into their Photoshop and still getting the different color values.
Anyone experienced this issue before? Am I missing changing a color/profile setting on one of the machines/software packages?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Why are you using EPS? It is kind of outdated format these days.
EPS does not support color profiles. The default Save as EPS options in Illustrator include CMYK conversion which changes the values. To avoid this uncheck "Include CMYK Post Script" in the save options. Then when you open the file in Photoshop the RGB values will be the same and if you want it displayed the same, in Photoshop choose Edit > Assign Profile and choose the same profile - Adobe RGB in your case. The color settings in Photoshop will have no effect and can remain unchanged.
If you do that using the same computer the colors will be identical in values and appearance. If you do it on different computers the values will be the same and the color appearance will depend on if both computers have been calibrated to display colors accurately.

Ok, I solved this problem! I ejected the drive and then disconnected it both from the power supply and the USB connector. I then reconnected everything and powered it up again and Then went into TM preferences and chose the drive as the backup. TM did a new backup (well over an hour) and now works as advertised.

When I have finished working on an image in Photoshop and I hit the save button it goes instead to the "save as" screen. This never happened in previous Photoshop versions. When I get to Lightroom, I have a grey screen the says "File could not be found."

The problem with write permissions for the OneDrive folder only shows up in Lightroom 6's export dialogue, that's why it's to irritating. Lightroom 5.7.1 is not having that problem nor does the file explorer. The problem also exists on both of my machines. If I don't know how to use mini bridge in Photoshop and InDesign.

I tried to use mini bridge from photoshop and inDesign both but unsuccessfully. Displays message "Waiting for Bridge CS5..." and it seems for hours and hours but not working... .
But Adobe Bridge is working perfectly. Does anyone has the same problem?

So, I have the same problem with the mini bridge not loading. I noticed it also wouldn't load at my school on their Mac computers, too. I wondered if it had anything to do with me only having the free trial but the school's computer isn't free trial. I looked at the two solutions you've provided.

Updating Photoshop and Bridge CS6

I'm trying to update Photoshop CS6 13.0.0. to 13.0.3 The Update option under "Help" menu is grayed out and when I manually download the upgrade and try and install either 13.0.1 or 13.0.3, I get:
"Updates could not be applied
Please contact your Administrator if you wish to apply updates on your machine. Updates have been suppressed by the Administrator."
I am the Administrator! I have uninstalled Photoshop and re-installed 13.0.0 and still get the same error...
System: Mac OSX 10.8.2
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Jeff, I downloaded 13.0.4 and tried to install it with the same error. I've also been searching my log files and found that the only Adobe install log (except for a few very old ones like CS5) is the log for my re-install of CS6 13.0.0 which completes with:
