Photoshop and the Windows 7 Taskbar Jump List

One great tool for Windows 7 users is the Taskbar. start up Photoshop and the icon will show up in the taskbar. Right-click on that icon and you can pin it to the taskbar for one-click launch. The best thing about this is the list (aka "Jump List") of the 10 most recent files you will see if you right-click on the taskbar icon. You can also edit this list to remove files that you have deleted or simply pin a file to the list. Click on a file anywhere in the list and it will open.  But what if you would like to increase the number of recent files?  You can,and here's how:
Right-click on a vacant spot in the taskbar.  Click on Properties in the context menu. Then click on the Start Menu tab. Now follow the screenshot:
You can set that jump list number up to 60 items, but your screen resolution is the limiting factor. I can set it up to 25,much better than 10 and it is for all icons in the taskbar. It's a quick way to open a file without opening Bridge or going to the File > Open Recent files list in PS.
This tip doesn't make the rounds too often and it's worth a repeat. I can only vouch for Windows 7, let us know if it works in Vista or XP.

Good plan.  You'll like my Configure the Windows 8 "To Work" Options book too if you go that route.  No, Windows 8 does not offer compelling reasons to move up.  In fact a lot of stuff is just deleted that had value.  Virtually no one can figure out what Microsoft's "strategy" is with this - I've come to conclude they don't really have a concerted strategy, and they're just trying to cover it up with Marketing BS.
About the only things I've seen going for Windows 8 are:
It's oriented toward tablets, so there will be some new tablet offerings coming out that will run a flavor of it.
It's pared down to such an extreme that it runs noticeably leaner and faster on a desktop system.
There's a cheap upgrade available ($39.99 if you have any older version of Windows).
Obvious negatives:
Completely revamped Start screen with the desktop being put off to the side.  Desktop apps considered "legacy" now.
No start button, but non-obvious "hot corners" you have to just know about.
Little attempt to make it possible to use just the mouse and click on stuff, as has been the tradition.
No visual styles on the desktop at all, making it look plain and flat, and making it difficult to use multiple applications at once.
Microsoft wanting you to walk through their online App Store at every turn.
There's a web page describing all the useful stuff they've removed...  It's no wonder the upgrade is going to be cheap:

  • How can I get the list view of tabs on the windows 7 taskbar exclusively and not just when I have a lot of tabs (over 13?) open at once?

How can I have tabs stack in the windows 7 taskbar before I have 13 tabs open?

  • With hardware acceleration enabled, and with plenty of tabs open, using the Windows 7 taskbar preview option will almost always crashed the nVidia display driver.

    Latest Firefox 4 beta 6.
    nVidia GT240 1GB DDR3 with driver version 258.96.
    Windows 7 Ultimate.
If I have plenty of tabs opened, in Firefox 4 beta 6 with hardware acceleration enabled, using the Windows 7 Taskbar preview feature (that will show all the tabs Firefox has loaded) will cause the Nvidia display driver to crash. When this happen, the GUI part of Firefox will be unusable and has to be killed via Task Manager.
This doesn't happen if hardware acceleration is disabled.

It is beta software and the older 4.0 b6 version may not work with all display drivers.

    Hi Samcat,
You can use a download instead of the disk as an alternative: Adobe - Download free trial version Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 | Adobe you can license with your serial
Please test the disk in another windows machine to check if it's caused by the drive or the disk. If you tested with 2 drives please start a support case, i assume Adobe will only provide downloads at this point. They are the same as the trials. If you still need a disk you can burn the trial to a disk as a backup disk. Good luck!

  • When opening a file of any type in Photoshop (CS4), the windows will not appear in Ps.

When opening a file of any type in Photoshop (CS4), the windows will not appear. Photoshop will open and I can see the layers on the right but the document window will not come up no matter what I try.  I try closing down everything, double-clicking a layer, opening multiple windows, etc.. Any thoughts?

Can you post a screenshot of your entire Photoshop screen with a file loaded in and the layers panel showing?

  • Can one pin all items from the bookmark toolbar to the Windows 7 Taskbar Quicklaunch icon?

Is it possible to have the favorites toolbar displayed as 'pinned favorites' on the Windows 7 Taskbar?
I know I can just drag an favorite from the Favorites Toolbar to the Firefox Quicklaunch icon,
    but it looks really ugly;
It shows the default Firefox favicon with the web address partially displayed instead of the name
I have given it on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
Is there a way to preserve the favicon, and have the Favorites name displayed instead?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Nick.

    Heloo,
    thanks for the swift reply!
That does not resolve my issue.
My bookmarks toolbar is already nice and tidy. ([https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3fLyJeN1WiBYUV2aWloVVlGWHc/edit Screenshot])
What I am talking about, is getting them the same on the '''Windows 7 Taskbar'''.
They now look like [https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B3fLyJeN1WiBRVlKT3hzQ2FLek0 this].
The example shown is the address of my GMail inbox.
I would like to have it just show "GMail inbox" for example, instead of the url it is referring to, with the GMail favicon.

  • Copy Shortcuts to the Windows 7 Taskbar using MDT

I would like to copy items to the Windows 7 taskbar for all users, and do this during deployment as part of a task sequence. Does anyone know if this can be done. I found a script called pinItem.vbs, but do not know if it could be done from a TS, nor
    how it would be.

    Hi Scott,
    I would recommend this script:
    http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/ScriptCenter/b66434f1-4b3f-4a94-8dc3-e406eb30b750/
It's a poweshell module that allows you to pin, items to both the task bar and start menu during your reference image build task sequence.
It's very simple to use this with MDT 2012 U1. Simply place the module in the folder {deploymentshare}\Tools\Modules\PinnedApplications\PinnedApplications.psm1
Then for example create a powershell "script" that looks something like this:
    Import-Module PinnedApplications.psm1
    Set-PinnedApplication -Action PinToStartMenu -FilePath "C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Internet Explorer.lnk"
    Set-PinnedApplication -Action PinToTaskbar -FilePath "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office\Microsoft Outlook 2010.lnk"
Since the module is placed in the Tools\Modules folder, MDT can find this module easily during deployment without needing to specify a path where the module can be found.
Now the most important part of everything.
Whether it's SCCM or MDT that you use to deploy your custom image, you need to edit the unattend.xml of the task sequence that is used to
    >>>Deploy<<<
the image. The default user profile is copied upon first boot after the image is applied, and not during the sysprep execution of your task sequence before your image is captured.
The CopyProfile setting is not enabled by default with the unattend.xml files created by MDT or SCCM, you will need to use WSIM to add this entry, more info can be found here:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff716261.aspx
Dispite the article saying you cannot pin applications to start menu and task bar (and this is normally true if you do these tasks manually, then these items will not persist in the new user profile), this scripted method actually does work.
    Kind regards,

  • I just installed Photoshop and the menus are tiny, unusable

I just installed Photoshop and the program interface is tiny, I need a magnifying glass to see the menus. Windows 8. All my other apps installed fine. Why would Photoshop do this?
    It's basically unusable.
    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for moving this topic...I couldn't find it in the Photoshop General Discussion though, so I'm replying here. I managed to find a workaround (not a solution). After finally finding another text adjustment setting*, and despite warnings from my computer, I was able to find a resolution combination that worked, and made Photoshop look normal. I looked at my other (almost identical) laptop where Photoshop IS working and used that resolution.
(Why couldn't a single support person from four companies, in hours of chats and calls, think of that?) After changing the resolution, things got huge, but a popup came up saying 250%, which altered me. I changed it to 125%, then all was good.
(* the "windows 8 display setting screens do not show this adjustment, you have to go to another control panel window to see the text adjustment....Windows 8 is so cryptic.),
Hopefully this will save some other ******* days of headache. Unfortunately I can't run at my new laptop's resolution but at least I can get back to work.
    Default setting - 3200x1800  250% text size
    New setting - 1600x900  125% text size
Maybe Adobe could fix this problem. All my other Adobe apps look fine at 3200x1800.
    Thanks.

  • I set up a new router and the windows machines have no problem with connectivity.  I go through the MacBook Pro's airport assistant and view my network and then enter the WPA2 password.  I get back a message saying the password is incorrect when it is

I set up a new router and the windows machines connect fine.  My MacBook Pro does not.  I go through the airport assistant and see the network yet when I enter the router WPA password I get a message back saying that the password is incorrect.  And, it isn't!  Very frustrating.  What can I do as I had the same problem after I tried to reinstall my last router.  Again, only on the Mac.  Thanks!

If you kept the same Base Station name and network name, that can confuse Keychain Access. Either change the Base Station and network name, or open Keychain Access Utility and delete any reference to your Base Station and network name. Make sure you delete from the Login and System keychains.
