Photoshop and vista

Hi,
I've found similar problems with Vista and CS3/4, mine is with Photoshop CS with Vista and I didn't find the right solution yet :
- With the Vista Aero theme selected, somme Aero effects are disturbing to work on photoshop : moving layers is slowered (like the windows of the explorer), it's not much but disturbing for work.
- If I select the Vista Basic theme I don't have this slowing layers issue but then I have the big lag/delay problem when painting with the brush (impossible to work).
- So logically I tried to select the Aero Theme + deactivate some of the bothering Aero options (Enable deskstop composition/animate windows). But when I do so Vista in fact automatically select the Vista Basic Theme, so I have the lag problem with brush again...
It seems a bit odd not to be able to work with protoshop properly on Vista, some of you may have a solution to this ?
Or is it back to XP and that's it ?
Many thanks in advance,

uuummm..it should be OK with those specs.
I would reset Areo back to default for now and try it in XP compatibility mode.
And have a fiddle with the preference. ( don't forget to close CS and reopen to enable the changes).
Lower the History states to 10 or 15.
Up the ram usage to 80% - you might have tweak this abit
Move the cache up and down to see if that makes a difference.
Place a scratch disk on drive 2.
Also, if it's a new machine there is usually an initial period when Vista is indexing, prefetching, etc which can slow disk access temporarily.
What size images and brushes are you using?......try the brushes with smoothing and other options disabled and see if that helps.

  • Tablet PC calibration error in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS3 whilst in Extended Desktop Mode

    Hey everyone!
I've run into a snag which hasn't bugged me before because I never used a second monitor, but now that I do, Photoshop and Illustrator don't function properly.
I am running my Adobe products on my Lenovo X61 Thinkpad Tablet, which is Wacom PenEnabled. It's got the basic digitizer pen and pen pressure features, no stylus tilt or anything.
Whenever I run Photoshop or Illustrator in Extended Desktop Mode so I can have a different window open on my external monitor and the Adobe app on my tablet screen, my stylus goes strange. It seems to think that the extended desktop is part of the Adobe window, so when I move my stylus to draw, the cursor will appear on the external monitor, usually proportionate to the size of the screen...ie. It interprets the external and tablet screens as one desktop and the top left corner of my tablet screen is the top left of my external, whilst the bottom right on tablet IS the bottom right on tablet, if that makes any sense...sorry.
So I can't draw anything in photosho unless I set it back to standard desktop mode, or mirrored desktop. I've searched over the net and these forums and I can't find a fix for this. I was walking in harvey norman the other day and the Wacom Cintiq 12" was there on display, and it had the same issue with extended desktop and photoshop.
Has anyone had this issue before and/or does anyone know of a fix for it? I'll keep searching around and playing with the computer until I fix it and I'll post any solutions I find here if noone else has one.
    My system details are:
    Abobe Photoshop CS3 10.0.0
    Adobe Illustrator CS3 13.0.0
OS: Windows Vista Build 6001, Service Pack 1, 32bit
    RAM: 2GB
HD: 18.2GB free Disk Space (out of 66.3GB on the Active Partition)
Video: Intel GMA: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

I'm using an HP tx2011au tablet pc, using adobe flash cs3 and have the exact same problem. it becomes decalibrated only while the flash window is open, and only while flash has a file open, and only when using an extended desktop. even if flash is open and it has no files open it works fine.

  • Photoshop and the Windows 7 Taskbar Jump List

One great tool for Windows 7 users is the Taskbar. start up Photoshop and the icon will show up in the taskbar. Right-click on that icon and you can pin it to the taskbar for one-click launch. The best thing about this is the list (aka "Jump List") of the 10 most recent files you will see if you right-click on the taskbar icon. You can also edit this list to remove files that you have deleted or simply pin a file to the list. Click on a file anywhere in the list and it will open.  But what if you would like to increase the number of recent files?  You can,and here's how:
Right-click on a vacant spot in the taskbar.  Click on Properties in the context menu. Then click on the Start Menu tab. Now follow the screenshot:
You can set that jump list number up to 60 items, but your screen resolution is the limiting factor. I can set it up to 25,much better than 10 and it is for all icons in the taskbar. It's a quick way to open a file without opening Bridge or going to the File > Open Recent files list in PS.
This tip doesn't make the rounds too often and it's worth a repeat. I can only vouch for Windows 7, let us know if it works in Vista or XP.

Good plan.  You'll like my Configure the Windows 8 "To Work" Options book too if you go that route.  No, Windows 8 does not offer compelling reasons to move up.  In fact a lot of stuff is just deleted that had value.  Virtually no one can figure out what Microsoft's "strategy" is with this - I've come to conclude they don't really have a concerted strategy, and they're just trying to cover it up with Marketing BS.
About the only things I've seen going for Windows 8 are:
It's oriented toward tablets, so there will be some new tablet offerings coming out that will run a flavor of it.
It's pared down to such an extreme that it runs noticeably leaner and faster on a desktop system.
There's a cheap upgrade available ($39.99 if you have any older version of Windows).
    Obvious negatives:
Completely revamped Start screen with the desktop being put off to the side.  Desktop apps considered "legacy" now.
No start button, but non-obvious "hot corners" you have to just know about.
Little attempt to make it possible to use just the mouse and click on stuff, as has been the tradition.
No visual styles on the desktop at all, making it look plain and flat, and making it difficult to use multiple applications at once.
Microsoft wanting you to walk through their online App Store at every turn.
There's a web page describing all the useful stuff they've removed...  It's no wonder the upgrade is going to be cheap:

  • PSE 8 and Vista: Fonts

Hi.  I'm extremely new to photoshop.  I'm working on a project and want a different font than what PSE 8 has.  (I am surprised that it only has 20-30 styles).  I went online and found what I wanted and downloaded it to my computer.  It's available in my Microsoft Word, but yet PSE 8 does not recognize it or other types of font already on my computer.  I went into my program files, adobe, photoshop and found the font file and even tried to drop the font into there, but again, it wouldn't accept it.
Am I doing something wrong or can someone please guide me on how to do this?  My computer is new (2-2009).  I am using Vista.
Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

Adobe doesn't provide support for PSE 7 or earlier on Vista 64, though many people have reported that it runs just fine:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_PSE_and_Vista
While Adobe has committed in writing that PSE 8 will run on Windows 7, they don't say if they'll support Windows 7 64-bit (Windows 7 has 32- and 64-bit flavors, just like Vista and XP).   It wouldn't surprise me if Adobe declines to support Windows 7 64-bit, just as they have with Vista.
However, the problems you're experiencing are very possibly not related to Vista 64. See this FAQ for troubleshooting PSE Editor crashes:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Troubleshooting_Editor_ crashes
Finally, you could try downloading the 30-day free trial of PSE 8 from Adobe.com.

  • New laptop spec suggestions for Photoshop and Illustrator

    Hi Everyone!
As I am sifting through the posts regarding laptops - I figured I'd post my own as my requirements are a little different.  I am looking to buy a new windows laptop.  I work with Photoshop and Illustrator and basic office programs like outlook, word and excel.  I have CS2 but will upgrade with the new laptop purchase - so running CS5.5 (or better) Photoshop and Illustrator is required.  I may or may not buy the whole Creative Suite as I only use these and Acrobat.  I want to spend what is required to get the job done well - not more - but I don't want to be cheap either – my laptop needs to work well & not hamper my workflow.  This will be my only computer.  Being efficient is key.  I use Adobe to do graphics for apparel: (embroideries, prints, logos, etc.) and small business (logos, print media, etc.).  I work in actual size – so a lot of what I do is on a 20 x 30 art board.  I do not work on videos – just print media and static artwork.  Suggestions on the specs I will need and/or actual laptop models would be great.  Thanks so much for your help - it is all so confusing!

  • Bridge, Photoshop and Windows 7

After skipping Vista, I've finallly "upgraded" to Windows 7.  I can't seem to get things figured out with the x86 and the 64 bit versions of Photoshop.  Normally I use Lightroom and all is well there, but I've been trying to go directlly from Bridge to Photoshop and I cannot figure out how to configure things.  No matter where I get the Bridge (x86 or using  64 bit), it goes to 64 bit Photoshop.  Now maybe I should be using the 64 bit version, but I think I have some plugins that will work only in x86, but besides that, shouldn't I be able to use whichever one I want?  I cannot figure out how.
There is an Open With but I can't figure out how to configure it.  I guess I can go in and change a thousand associations with the Photoshop I want, but shouldn't I be able to choose which one I want?  If so, HOW?
I also might want to use Open With other applications, but of course I can't figure out how to do that either.

I can't make any of this work.  I can go to explorer, select Open With and carefully point to the x86 version of Photoshop, say make it the default and it will open the 64 bit version every time.  I can specify the 32 bit version in toolbars and drag images to it just fine but I don't know how to make Bridge open the 32 bit version at all.  Of course if I open in ACR, if I then want to go to PS, I also go the 64 bit version.
However, I think I found a way, or several ways, to fool it.  First, the 64 bit version seems to be the Windows default.   Changing this can be done in the registry:
    Navigate to  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\Photoshop.exe\shell\edit:
Change the path to the version of Photoshop.exe you want to use (32 or 64 bit), and that one will be the new default whenever “Photoshop” is chosen as a file association.
I have not tried that and probably won't because I did try something that may be even better.  I changed the association in Bridge of one raw file type in Preferences > File Type Associations to the 32 bit version.  Now with that type if I double click I get the 32 bit version and if I right click I get a choice of  "Adobe Photoshop CS5" and "Adobe Photoshop CS5 (default)".  The former is teh 32 bit version and the latter is the 64 bit version.  Yeah, I have a choice!  Every file type I use has to be changed, but that's not so many.

  • Photoshop 5 Vista OS DVD Not working

I cannot make backups of my catalogs on my Vista computer from Photoshop Elements 5.
The CDDVDW is a TSST Cop. TSH653Q drive. Photoshop tells me the driver is not loaded, Install Photoshop. I do the install and the same thing happens. When attempting to do a Catalog backup to the DVD drive (in my case drive F) isn't showing up on the list of available drives. Please note I have down loaded Photoshop 5.02 and have the same results. I enjoy the Photoshop product and being able to backup my pictures is important to me. I have Photoshop 5 running in a Toshiba Laptop the OS is XP all works fine but because the laptop was being bogged down by photoshop I purchased a desktop. It is a HP dual core pavilion with Vista as the OS.
I hope you can help me with this problem I enjoy photoshop and have invested a lot of time in my pictures.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Joe
Sorry for the slow response. My wife and I went Geocaching yesterday, we biked and hiked 6+ miles so these old bones were tired. I did get some good photos though. As far as Adobe and Photoshop elements 5 is concerned I feel it is a great and very powerful bit of software. It has given me many hours of productive enjoyment and enabled me to improve my photos. So I will probably upgrade soon. I do want to thank you for your time and efforts to assist me in straightening out my DVD problem.
    Thanks

  • ACR 6.1 and Vista x64 failures

    Vista Ultimate x64, LR3 x64, CS5 Master Edition.
When I am in Photoshop and I run updates I am told that there are no updates (ACR 6.0, Bridge 4.0).  When I download the manual updates and run them I get told "update is not applicable".  I have tried all the solutions in the forums except a clean OS install (WTF).
Removed CS5, ran the reg cleaner, several reboots, verified OS patching, downloaded lates trial to make sure I had the most updated media.  Install with no issues, same update problems.

The 1st link didn't work (was already tried), but the 2nd
does allow me to do this upgrade.  I still want to fix
the root cause so I can update bridge and any other updates that come out.

open your cc app and see if it's listed as installed or available for installation.
    if neither,
    1.  quit the app (from the task bar) and relaunch.  if that fails:

  • Help CS2 and Vista

    Hi,
I’ve been running CS2 on Vista for about 4 years on my laptop with no problems. Last weekend  I got a Malware virus that had to be removed by McAfee. They made some changes to the Vista OS and also installed Service Pack 2 for Vista. Now CS2 won’t load- it asks me for an authorization code and asked that I activate by phone. The Adobe rep directed me to a support page on the Adobe website and to remove the .DAT files in the program licenses file. I tried this – no go. Also tried to run as administrator- no go.
When I looked thru my hard drive folders, I saw that I have adobe program licenses folders in TWO PLACES
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe Systems\Product licenses
    And
    C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\ProgramData\Adobe Systems\Product licenses
I’m guessing here, but It seems like McAfee uninstalled CS2 and then reinstalled it and tried to protect my license in a quarantined folder. In any case, the files in each of  the License folders are different. Should I try to move my “quarantined” files to their original folder? Would this be safe? Would this work?
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions here? I didn’t get much help from Adobe on this. They said that CS2 is too old to give phone tech support. ( even though I bought Photoshop CS5 extended and Lightroom to run on my home computer 2 months ago)
I really would like to get this back because without reinstalling from disc. I have customized many CS2 programs, brushes, actions, printer settings etc, that would be lost if I reinstall and from other forums, It seems that a lot of people are having problems installing from disc to Vista.
    Help!!!

My suggestion is to forget about CS2 and Vista and give serious thought to upgrading...NOW! CS2 is totally unsupported under Vista is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing. Why now? Because CS5.5 has already been announced and in the mean time you can get the CS2 to CS5 Design Premium upgrade for $768: http://amzn.to/ekY9fa. That will make you eligible for a free upgrade to CS5.5 when it ships in the next few weeks. http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/153/tn_15304.html
The CS2 to CS5.5 upgrade will cost about $200 more. By buying CS5 now you'll save that $200 and get a free upgrade as well as having a supported combination of software and operating system. You'll also keep yourself eligible for upgrade pricing for the foreseeable future.
