Photoshop CC 2014 Smart Sharpen Lockup.

I am using the latest PS CC 2014 version as of today, June 19, 2014.  When I try to use Smart Sharpen, the Smart Sharpen window opens and then the program locks up and I have to perform a Ctrl-Alt-Del.  How can I solve this problem?  I like Smart Sharpen and I would like to use it.  Thank you all.  -Steven

Hi Look Here Please,
The filter Gallery in Photoshop CC 2014.
Works only when image is set to 8 bits/channel.
Please let me know if this helps.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 Smart Sharpen is freezing Photoshop

I am running Windows 7 and I have never had this problem with CS 5. But every time I convert to a smart object and hit Smart Sharpen, my Photoshop freezes and I have to force stop the program. Can anybody help me resolve my problem, so I can sharpen without the program freezing?
    Chance

Since Smart Sharpen now uses the GPU the suspicion falls on your display driver.
Since you have a Windows system you can visit the web site of the maker of your video card and download their latest display driver release for your hardware and OS version.

  • Photoshop CC Smart Sharpen vs. LR/ACR Sharpening

Could someone articulate for me how Photoshop CC's Smart Sharpening differs from Lightroom (and ACR's) sharpening in the Detail panel? Do they approach sharpening differently? Is one more powerful than the other, and if so, in what way? Are there particular circumstances under which you find it worthwhile to use SS rather than stay with LR/ACR?  (I do see that SS allows one to control the effect in highlights and shadows.)
I have generally been sticking with LR sharpening, but want to be able to answer these questions intelligently (and be aware of circumstances where I should take the time to open PS and use SS).
    Thank you!

The approach is potentially similar if you have SS set to fix lens blur and you have LR's Detail slider moved way over to the right (+50 and above). When set up like that, both tools can do deconvolution type sharpening...
Booth tools can set the sharpening radius and both have an amount (although I doubt the numbers relate–prolly a different scale).
With SS the sharpening is applied on the color data while in LR the sharpening is only on the luminance data. With SS on a layer, you can set the layer blend to luminance. With SS you can roll off and control the sharpening contours of the highlights and shadows. In LR the sharpening is preset to roll off the highlights and shadows so there's no user control.
In SS you can (in CC) can adjust noise reduction while sharpening. In LR you can as well. The only thing that SS can do that LR can't is to resharpen for motion blur. However, SS is pretty weak in that department compared to the new anti-shake filter.
Which one is better? 6 of one, 1/2 dozen of the other. I would not leave LR simply to run SS on an image and be forced to work on a rendered image. I would do all the capture sharpening in LR and would only use SS if I was going to go into Photoshop anyway and even then, more likely to use SS for effect sharpening not capture sharpening.

What is the best laptop configuration (CPU, GPU, Memory, SSD) to optimize speed of Photoshop CC's smart sharpen feature?

  • Is it possible to export Vector Smart Objects as vector SVG files from Photoshop CC 2014?

I have Vector Smart Objects copied from Illustrator and pasted into Photoshop. I would like to export them as vector SVG files (using Generator or Extract Assets). I can add the .svg extension to the layer and actually export an SVG just fine. The problem is any SVG I have exported have all been raster images. It defeats the purpose of having that as an option as far as I'm concerned.
I remember watching and listening to keynotes and other speakers at Adobe MAX 2014 who said it was so powerful and amazing to create SVG files from Photoshop. If we're still exporting raster SVG files from Photoshop...that's not very impressive or exciting--especially since this era of modern web development benefits greatly from using vector SVG files.
I understand that Shape Layers can be exported as vector SVG files but that seems very limiting. I also realize that users can create some impressive vectors in Photoshop, but that is not optimal. Illustrator is a better tool for creating vectors and I normally use Photoshop and Illustrator side-by-side. I know that vector SVG files can be exported from Illustrator but that isn't as user friendly and convenient as utilizing Photoshop > Generator > Reflow.
My idea was to create my assets in Illustrator, paste them into Photoshop as Vector Smart Objects, set up my layout, and then use the Generator/Reflow method or Extract Assets to get a new web design started.
Maybe I misunderstood what the speakers at Adobe MAX had said. Perhaps it's just user error and I'm just missing something simple (it happens).
Photoshop CC 2014 notes the following under Help > System Info:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 2014.2.2 20141204.r.310 2014/12/04:23:59:59 CL 994532  x64
    Operating System: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for your time.

Not quite the same, but have a look at the new Libraries feature that came with 2014.2.2  I just tried it, and dragging a vector object into a library I created in Photoshop, was there in Illustrator.  This happens without having to close and reopen Illustrator.  Just use the drop down at the top of the Libraries panel (in Illustrator) to find your custom, or job specific library.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 - Stack Mode Disabled - Load Image Into Stack Has No "Convert To Smart Object" Option

    Hi,
I have just installed Photoshop CC 2014.1 and I have "Stack Mode" command disabled.
Also, I have no option to convert layers into smart object  when I run "Load Image Into Stack" command.
Can you please tell me how to enable these features?
    Thank you very much.

  • Why does PhotoShop CC 2014 crash my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit PC every time I try to use Sharpen/Blur Reduction and also Noise Reduction ??!!!???

    Hi Adobe
You a have a really wonderful PhotoShop CC product. It's really great, and I know new versions such as 2014 have their teething problems.
But I am getting really sick of my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit PC being crashed whenever I try to use PhotoShop CC 2014 Sharpen / Blur Reduction and also Noise Reduction.
This happens both with JPG's and PSD's.
Please sort your **** out and get some patches out to address this quickly !!
    Chris Tattersall

    Chris,
It doesn't crash for everyone.  A person could be forgiven for saying, in return, "Please sort out your **** system problems".
Trust me when I say many, many problems are caused by the computer system setup not being up to the needs of this cutting-edge graphics software.  Photoshop is heavily dependent on the GPU, and GPU drivers are notorious for having bugs (they're primarily written to run games).
However, that being said, recent driver releases from both ATI and nVidia do actually work pretty well with Photoshop CC 2014.
What video card do you have?
What display driver version are you running?
If you're unsure how to tell these things, go into Photoshop, choose Help - System Info, copy the data, and post it here.

  • Smart Sharpen not Working in CC 2014

Recently I upgraded from CC to CC 2014.  Since then I can't get Smart Sharpen to work.  Lens and motion blur don't work at all.  Sometimes when I choose Gaussian blur it works other times not.
It's not just me, a friend who has it installed on two computers can't make it work either.
    Any ideas?

In order to preview .php pages locally, you need a local testing server (Wamp, Xampp, Mamp).  Is yours properly defined in DW CC?  See screenshots.

  • Problems with smart sharpening in Photoshop CC 14.2

When I open the smart sharpening filter, the hand symbol pops up and Photoshop doesn't do anything anymore. With Ctrl - Alt - Delete I have to shut down the program. All other filters work correctly. I also removed and installed Photoshop CC again, but the problems are still the same.
    Can someone advise?

Smart Sharpen was one of the things tweaked in 14.2 so it may have been to do with your Preferences > Performance settings.  (In case it goes wrong again)

  • Photoshop CS6 on W7 platform crashing recently using smart sharpen filter.

Been working on a project moving files from Lightroom 4 to Photoshop CS6 for final edits and experiencing recent files crashing PS CS6 when using the smart sharpen filter. I've processed hundreds of files in CS6 and never had this issue till lately. All other filters work fine, including other sharpen options, it's just the smart sharpen interface. I over-installed/re-installed Photoshop CS6 thinking a driver might have corrupted for that filter, then installed all available upgrades but the problem persists. I can't figure it out, and it's a problem - I use smart sharpen a lot for final output. Am I overlooking something simple? Or, do I need to just uninstall PS CS6 and do a total re-install or is there another option? Thanks.

  • Photoshop CC reports out of memory using Smart Sharpen

When I try to use Smart Sharpen PS reports out of memory even though I have 32GB of RAM, 25GB available and PS is allowed to use 76%. Increasing amount PS is allowed to use doesn't change anything.

You are definitely using the 64bit version?
    Have you tried restarting Photoshop?
What are your Preferences > Performance settings?
Smart Sharpen was one of the items addressed in 14.2 and should be making more use of GPU acceleration.  I get almost zero lag with it now.

Windows?  If so, what graphics card do you have and what version display driver?
You can go to the web site of the maker of your graphics card and download/install their latest release for your OS and hardware.

  • Photoshop CS4 no display preview for Smart Sharpen after making adjustments

I just upgraded to Photoshop CS4 which seems to work fine except for the preview window in Smart Sharpen and Unsharp Mask. I get a preview display when using the sharping tools after I open a photo but if I make adjustments such as Levels or Curves the preview window is blank. It's recommended to sharpen a photo after all other adjustments and effects are applied. I can't see how sharp I'm making the image and if I'm getting any noise. Adobe said it was a problem with the driver with the graphics card and to call apple for an update. Apple says it doesn't have an update. Does anyone know a work around? Adobe had me throw away preferences and uncheck open GL. Neither worked.

  • Photoshop CS5 (Mac) How to load custom Smart Sharpen filter?

Yesterday I was working with a collection of photos, and saved my Smart Sharpen settings. As I moved from one photo to another, I was able to choose my saved settings in the dropdown menu. Today, however, all that is available is "default" -- how can I load yesterday's saved settings?

If you don't exit Photoshop gracefully, it doesn't write settings changes out to disk.
It's not something one should have to worry about, but it's always a good idea after you make a Photoshop configuration change (or create named settings, or similar) to just exit Photoshop right away.
