Photoshop CC 2104 30 bit Color Support
I'm using PS CC 2014 on a Windows 7 64 bit system with an Nvida Quadro 600 graphics card. I've tried every possible settings combination for PS and Windows 7 with no success using the AMD Ramp test file. The Nvida 10 bit Demo works fine. PS CS6 works as well, but only at 64% Zoom view and higher.
https://forums.adobe.com/message/7154720#7154720
Is anyone using an Nvidia Quadro 600 (not K600) card with Windows 7 having success with 30 bit color mode in PS CC 2014? This card is listed as "tested" in the PS CS6 GPU FAQ, but not on the PS CC 2014 GPU FAQ. I'm assuming it wasn't tested because it's an older card, but still should work.
Read that and the Nvidia PDF multiple times. Basically there's nothing you need to change in the Nvidia driver or Windows 7 Aero mode, but I have tried it in both in Windows Basic and Aero modes. It's "partially" working in PS CS6 and the Nvidia demo works so clearly my NEC PA272w monitor, Nivida Quadro graphics card and Windows 7 are supporting 30 bit color....just not in PS CC2015 and only partially in PS CS6.
I'm not a newbie at this stuff, so feel free to talk techie. Thanks!

10-bit color support in Lion?
A Mac Pro with Radeo HD 5870. A Mini Display port output. A 10-bit display (e.g. NEC Multisync PA301W).
All the hardware pieces are in place to be able to display true 10 bit per channel colour depth from within Photoshop CS5.5.
But is the OS support there yet? My understanding is that previous versions of OS X did NOT support 10-bit color; but I have been unable to find out if Lion does. The tech specs posted for Lion are... erm, somewhat simplified.
Can anyone chime in and let us know what the status of 10bpc support is in Lion?
Thanks,
JeremyIt hasn't been working for a while. I think it worked in CS4, but I don't have that installed now. This is with an ATI Firepro v4900. At least ATI finally fixed their Screen Capture bug. Adobe doesn't say much about the issue.

Hi,
Is it possible to work with 16 bit colors in Photoshop ?
I have some bitmaps, where I would like to change the colortable from 24 bit colors to 16 bit colors.
Thanks,
best regards,
PoulLet us consider the possibilities of the file format Windows Bitmap BMP. Photoshop can save
as BMP with different color depths, but this has nothing to do with "Photoshop Bitmap".
Mode Indexed color (BMP, 8 bit per pixel) uses a color look-up table, a CLUT:
256 rows with 3 bytes for R, G and B (one byte each).
The image contains for each pixel one byte, which is a pointer to the CLUT, from where the
color bytes are taken. Finally we have a 24 bit per pixel color representation (True color).
For GIF it's almost the same, but one row in the CLUT means transparency.
Building the CLUT for an image which may contain originally 256^3 diffent colors is called
Color quantization (a key word for a further search).
If the display should require a smaller number of bits, e.g. 5R, 6G, 5B (green is more accurate),
then the CLUT can be taken from the Indexed color BMP image and modified:
R: Shift right 3 bits and round
G: Shift right 2 bits and round
B: Shift right 3 bits and round
Assemble R,G,B in one word with 16 bit.
Similarly, if the display should require 5R, 5G, 5B.
Such a table cannot be generated directly by Photoshop.
Mode High color (BMP, 16 bit per pixel) does not use a CLUT. Perhaps, at the time when these
file formats were developed, a CLUT with 2^16 rows was considered as nonsensical.
Photoshop can generate a BMP image with 16 bit per pixel by one of three modes, as explained
earlier in my previous post.
Thus it is possible to convert an image, which contains an arbitrary number of "swatches"
as defined by True Color 24 bit per pixel, into High color 16 bit per pixel by Photoshop. From the
result one can take the coding and build a table.
Arbitrary means: up to the maximal number, e.g. 32*64*32 swatches for 5R 6G 5B.
The further proceeding depends strongly on the decision only 256 colors / more colors.
Accepting the 16 bit per pixel limit, one may use a fixed full size CLUT and an automatic conversion
True Color – High Color with Dithering.

I have PSE 6 which has limited support for 16-bit color images. Does PSE 8 now allow images to be edited using 16-bit color depth?
It's basically the same in PSE 8.

Will Photoshop CS6 display 30-bit-color with two GPUs?
Hello there!
I think about purchasing a small Nvidia Quadro, which supports 30-bit-color, since its not available on my currrent GTX 780Ti running on Windows 7 Ulitimate x64.
It is not a big deal to set the quadro, once installed, as the responsible GPU for color and OpenCL-acceleration...
BUT:
as long as the 780Ti has around 999999x times more computing-power than the small quadro (around 250 €), it would be nice to profit
of this as well. at the same time.
So: is there a way to use the Quadro purely for "displaying and color" and the 780ti for accelerating tasks in Photoshop CS6?
I'm afraid not..
but cheer me up pls.
Thanks in advance!Thank you for the quick response!
unfortunately that's what I expected to hear.
It's a shame that Nvidia wont enable the 30-bit-feature under windows or mac until you
spend a few thousand euros for a K5000 or K6000
I hope that there will be a workaround for that soon. (maybe some tweaked quadro-drivers as I read a few years ago)
Thanks so far! -
I'm operating from a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, which natively supports 32-bit color depth. Is photoshop touch rendering at this level? or is it 16-24 bit color. not sure i could tell without comparing two images from actual screens.
basically from what i gather, the answer is at that photoshop touch, in its ability to render psd, jpg and png is at least using a color space providing 24 or 30 bit color depth. the device's color space is capable of rendering 32 bit color depth.David,

Photoshop CS4 64 bit crashes with Color Picker
Hi-
I have Photoshop CS4 64 bit and 32 bit applications Version 11.02 installed on a Win 7 machine.
In the 64 bit version when I pick on the color picker or any swatch - the program crashes and freezes-up and I have to use the task manager to quit the program.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried re-installing the program, which rolled it back to version 11.0 but the problem persists - but ONLY in the 64 bit version. The color picker in the 32 bit version works just fine.
HELP!!
Thanks-
CathyOMG!! I feel soooo stupid! I discovered the problem.
I recently installed a second monitor and had been working with it - but today it was turned off.
The color picker was opening on THE SECOND MONITOR!! So it appeared on the first monitor that the program had stopped responding!
Well - live and learn!

How do I export from Lightroom to Photoshop 2014 using 8-bit color?
In LR when I rt-click in the image area, a menu appears. I choose export and then Photoshop 2014. I specify "edit with Lightroom adjustments. When the image appears in Photoshop it indeed as the adjustments, but the color depth is always 32-bit. It's become bothersome to then down adjust the color depth to 8-bit color and I am wondering if there is a hidden export setting that will allow me to export the image as 8-bit.
You can set that in Lightroom preferences see the screen capture.

Does Lightroom 4 support 10-bit color?
Hoping to learn if Lightroom supports 10-bit color. I know it supports ProPhotoRGB and 16-bit image files. Thanks.
oliver83 wrote:
Actually, the previous answers were only partially correct w.r.t. to displaying 10-bit colors. In contrast to what was said, LR4 (I use version 4.4) supports 10-bit colors, however only in the develop module. The library module does not seem to support it which could be because 1) it really does not support it or 2) the library previews are created with lower color depth or 3) something I haven't considered
I first read this somewhere and then personally verified it with ATI's ramp.psd test file on an Eizo CG276 (and a V4900 FirePro).
The library previews are jpeg (8-bit). -
16 bit color in PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS
I get an Error when using some of my tools (example: Healing Brush) in FULL EDIT that states that "16 bit color not supported . Convert to 8 bit color?"
Will Photshop 9 work with 16 bit color? Considering most cameras esp. DSLR's and scanners now use 16 bit color I hope so.Some features of PSE will work on 16 bit images, other features of PSE will not work on 16 bit images and you have to convert the image to 8 bits. I don't have PSE9, but it is my understanding that if a feature didn't work on 16 bit images in earlier versions, it won't work on 16 bit images in the current version (PSE9).

Macbook Pro & Mini Dispalyport Does NOT Support 10 bit Color Monitors
I am extremely concerned regarding Apple's Mini Displayport. Mini Displayport has been out for a year now, and is the video out port with the maximum signal output on Macbook Pro's. Apple's Mini Displayport still does not offer the compatibility and performance, that is possible with the standard Displayport implantation on Windows.
Case in point two monitors from NEC and Eizo, the NEC PA214W and the Eizo CG223W:
http://www.eizo.com/global/products/coloredge/cg223w/index.html
http://www.necdisplay.com/Products/Product/?product=5a6621b9-e9c4-4f02-8542-e625 1364bf7c
All current Macbook Pro's with Mini Displayport are unable to support the 10 bit color that these monitors are capable of. This is unacceptable, and an example of Apple leading customers to believe that Mini Displayport, offers the same capabillities and performance as Displayport.
It is my understanding that on paper MBP's with the NVidia 9400/9600 are capable of outputting a 10 bit signal. They just do not at this point in time, unlike all PC notebooks with Displayport. Mini Displayport has been sold by Apple as being every bit as capable only smaller than Displayport. The truth is it is not.
Apple notebooks can not currently produce the same level of quality on these monitors as Windows notebooks with Displayport that have also been on the market for a year now.
http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/newsarchive/19.htm#10-bitipsDisplayport:
http://www.displayport.org/consumer/
http://www.displayport.org/consumer/?q=content/faq
"Performance for a display interface is really bandwidth. So Displayport offers up to 10.8 Gigabits per second. That bandwidth can be allocated for greater color depth (more colors per pixel, i.e.. 30 bit color monitors), it can be allocated to resolution, i.e.. WQXGA , or refresh rate."
Note: The bandwidth has increased to 21.6 Gbps with the announcement of Displayport v1.2.
It appears to me that aside from the top of the line (Windows PC) notebooks, that the only systems that will currently be able to achieve 30 bit color with these monitors are going to be desktop systems with Displayport/Mini Displayport and the necessary GPU and Operating System. This is an example of the difficulty in getting accurate information when it comes to what a system can and can not do. Rod correctly pointed out that I was mistaken in saying that "all" PC notebooks with Displayport are capable of achieving 10 bit per channel output, some do not. As BSteely, Lewis, and Rod have discussed Mini Displayport is not what is responsible for the fact that Macbook Pros can not currently output 10 bit per channel signal. Displayport exists and allows for this capability, and I stand by my opinion that currently Macbook Pros with Mini Displayport do not implement the full Displayport spec, in particular the ability to output 10 bit per channel signal to 30 bit color monitors. On the PC side it is the "workstation" class notebooks that have had and continue to have this capability. There may be others, but in reviewing Dell, HP, and Lenovo I am only finding it in the Precision, W series, and Elitebook models. The latest T Series Thinkpads with Quadro GPU's may work as well. At this point, I am not going to research each and every model to determine exactly which notebook models and configurations will work, except to say none of them are Macbook Pros. The lesson here should be get multiple confirmations regarding your system's configuration and your intentions in its use. I was mistaken in my understanding that the MBP 17 with Mini Displayport would support the Displayport spec as it relates to 30 bit color monitors. I have stated what I think is wrong about that, but that is the way it is for now. Apple is not the only company to hype a technology, only to offer a limited implementation of it. "Vista Capable" comes to mind.

This post will hopefully alert others to this limitation. To end on a positive note, in my experience the last six months with my Macbook Pro, Apple has demonstrated it can resolve issues quickly and effectively, and I have been extremely pleased to the extent that they have worked with me to address the few significant issues that have come up, including a system replacement in quick order. This may or may not be something they will be able to address with the current Macbook Pros or even the next generation. We will see. -
Does Illustrator CC 2014 support 16-bit color?
I'm trying to create a grayscale image using RGB. The RGB components can only go up to 255. Does Illustrator support 16-bit color so I can have a range of 0-65535? I could not find this info in the documentation. A range of 0-255 is not enough for me.
Thanks. No, it does not support 16bit. You can try to place a 16bit psd, and you will get a message, that it will import only a 8bit image version because Illustrator does not support 16bit images.

30-bit "Deep Color" Support lacking?
Well, I just manually set my display depth to 30-bit, I have a Dell U2410, which supports 96% of the adobe RBG spectrum, at 1.07bn colors, and 30-bit deep color. I have a graphics card with HDMI 1.3, and am connected via HDMI.
I'm using a GTX 460, and may I just say that things don't look right.
Every GTK application has a blinds-like transparency to them on flat menu surfaces (ex. Firefox's menu bar is semi-transparent with opaque lines through it, showing the background behind)
Non GTK Applications seem to render just fine (Chromium, for example worked great) Compiz limits the window rendering region to roughly 75% of the screen, centered vertically, this region is surrounded by a strange "blue glowing border"
I'll update this post with a screenshot in a second to better depict the picture, but am I alone on this?
Edit: Cannot take screenshots apparently, either... they just show up black.
Last edited by Xaero252 (2012-12-05 22:15:13)moetunes wrote:How did you set it up to 30bit and why didn't you just go with the default 32bit ?
The default color depth in Xorg (and Windows, Mac) is 24-bit, with an 8-bit alpha channel ("32 bit");
This is 8 bits per channel, Red, Green Blue and Alpha (3 color channels, 1 alpha channel, 8bpc = 32 bits of information) this gives us the normal 16.7m colors.
In my case I have a monitor supporting 30 bit color, which totals 1.07bn colors
I set this in xorg.conf. DefaultDepth 30 and Depth 30 in their proper locations. The majority of things renders fine, barring things like images rendered via Feh, and GTK stuff. QT applications, and things rendered by my compositing window manager look fine, with the exception of the issue noted above. I'll try and obtain a screenshot using Compiz's screenshot plugin to better describe the issue and provide more information so I can hopefully get more input.
Thanks for the response. -
Does LR5 support 10-bit color?
I'm about to make a significant investment in GPU and monitor if LR5 supports 10-bit color. Please confirm.
Thanks. There are varying posts that suggest it might exist, but they all seem vague:

Performance Issues with Photoshop CS6 64-Bit
Hello -
Issue at hand: over the course of the last few weeks, I have noticed significant issues with performance since the last update to PS CS6 via the Adobe Application Manager, ranging from unexpected shut downs to bringing my workstation to a crawl (literally, my cursor seems to crawl across my displays). I'm curious as to if anyone else is experiencing these issues, or if there is a solution I have not yet tried. Here is a list of actions that result in these performance issues - there are likely more that I have either not experienced due to my frustration, or have not documented as occuring multiple times:
Opening files - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Pasting from clipboard - results in hanging process, takes 3-10 seconds to resolve
Saving files - takes 3-10 seconds to open the dialog, another 3-10 seconds to return to normal window (saving a compressed PNG)
Eyedropper tool - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempting to navigate any menu - will either crash Photoshop to desktop, or take 5-15 seconds to load
Attempts I've taken to resolve this matter, which have failed:
Uninstalled all fonts that I have added since the last update (this was a pain in the ***, thank you Windows explorer for being glitchy)
Uninstall application and reinstall application
Use 32-bit edition
Changing process priority to Above Normal
Confirm process affinity to all available CPU cores
Change configuration of Photoshop performance options
