Photoshop CC file started to get corrupted

Hi, I have a file I've been working on (Photoshop CC + OSX 10.9.1).
These artifacts appear in some layers that have some effects on smart objects (but not limited too).
I disabled gpu drawing, as it might be related - but the artifacts remain.
Is there anything I can do? Is there a "auto-fix" for PSD files?

Video drivers for the Mac are only available from Apple through Mac OS X updates.  We can't get them from the card manufacturers.
If the driver is not the issue, you need to figure out what corrupted your file.  This can happen through RAM or HD defects, or by saving over a network.
This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
See:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Starting to get corrupted files

Since I upgraded to Lightroom 4 last week, I've had two occasions where Windows 7 operating system at boot tells me I have corrupt files on the separate 2TB drive I use to store Lightroom catalog and photos on.  One difference between my LR3 vs LR4 settings was that I turned on the option to write XMP data to files per advice from Adobe evangelist that this is a better backup strategy in case LR catalog gets corrupt.  Wondering whether the LR 4 background process to write out XMP is causing the problem.
It might be a self inflicted wound, as last night, I was importing iPad screenshot PNG files into Bridge, batch renaming them and then exporting them to hard drive as JPG (when is Lightroom going to support PNG?) and synchronizing that folder in LR4 so that I can view in LR4. Maybe the fact that I have LR4 and Bridge open at the same time and doing some operations corrupted them?  LR4 got stuck at 1% progress in creating previews, so left the computer on overnight and when I come back in morning, black screen of death. When reboot, says I have to check that drive and finds lots of corrupt record segments. Never had this problem with LR3 and Bridge open at same time before LR4 and turning on the option to write XMP data to files.

I am experiencing reports of corrupted files as well!!! First report of corrupted files came the day after I installed Lightroom 4. No problems while I was using Ligthroom 3. So far, it seems to only occur with JPG-files.
I have about 10 000 photos stored on a Windows Home Server, both JPG and RAW files. About one day after I had installed and started using Lightroom 4, the WHS server began to complain about "file conflicts" (This is actually the first time I have experienced this spesific error on the server). I then found that the reason was that a lot of JPG-files had been locked and then never unlocked again. I am a developer myself, and many years ago I had some experience of this problem due to some programs that failed to close the files. Whatever the reason was this time, it was making it impossible for the WHS server to duplicate these files to a second hard drive (on WHS, duplication of files is done by a service. And if this service is unable to duplicate a file in 24 hours, it may report "file conflicts"). First strange thing about this was that it seemed to happen only with JGP files, and with files shot many years ago. It have been many years since I made any changes to those photos. To make the locks go away, I restarted the server. This seemed to resolve the problem with the locks. My first thought was that one of the disks on the server was about to fail, but after my next experiences I am beginning to think that’s not the problem…
For a few days I did not use Lightroom, and in this period no problems was reported by the server. But then, after using Lightroom 4 again a few hours, the same problem occurs. I now started to do some more investigation. Using Event Viewer on the WHS, I found that WHS was reporting both file lock problems and some file corruptions, and pointed me to some specific JPG files. Checking the files, I found that the files had been changed the same day I installed and used Lightroom 4 for the first time. After some more checking I found some corrupt JPG files, as well. This was yesterday, and since then, I have not dared to use Lightroom 4.
Actually I think all JPG files I have browsed using Lightroom 4, has been modified. But only some of them became "locked" or corrupted. Checking the RAW files, could not find that they have not been touched. I store a lot of data on my WHS server and many types of files. But corruption has only been a problem with the JGP files…
If I used file explorer to preview the corrupted files, I still got a preview of some of them. And it was easy to see they were corrupted. Actually it looked like a number of photos have been merged together like a mosaic. Trying to open one of the corrupted files using Photoshop CS5, ended with a message saying it was impossible to read the file.
For now I am not able to do more testing of this problem, but I am planning to copy all the photos to an external USB disk, and then play around with it using Lightroom 4, to see if problem shows up again.
    Some info about my computers:
I am using Windows 7 x64 on a Dell M6400 laptop with Lightroom 4 x64. The catalog resides on this laptop.
My WHS Server is of the first version released by Microsoft (not the 2011 version), but with all updates installed. All photos, both the JPG and the RAW files reside on a share on the WHS Server. I have been using this WHS server for many years now, and with both Lightroom 2 and Lightroom 3 before the upgrade to Lightroom 4. During this time I have experienced one disk crash, but thanks to the file duplication no data was lost. The server is currently equipped with three physical disks; one 1.5TB, one 650 GB and one 2 TB.
Most of my JPG files are shot with a Canon IXUS 400 (many years ago). My RAW files are all shot with a Canon 5D Mk2, but those seem to be untouched.
I will report back as soon I have more information.

  • Canon Raw (CR2) files seem to get corrupted after some times

    Hello
I use a fully registered Lightroom 5.3 with my Canon 5D Mark III, and I have this kind of corruption on some of my CR2 files from times to times. If i reimport the .cr2 file in another catalog or even on another the resulting file is still corrupted.
The wierdest thing is that the original import was successful and I successfully exported it several times correctly. The corruption should have happens afterward:
Do you have any idea where does this comes from? This is absolutely inacceptable from a professional software.
PS: I had this kind of curruption with an old version of Lightroom with my previous pentax K7d, but I though this was past
    Thanks you very much

Yes, -failing hardware (typically disk or ram).

The software is not corrupting them, it's just revealing existing corruption. (yeah, I know some apps can still display the jpeg preview without revealing the corruption, still... - Lr is a raw editor..).

  • My HD gets corrupted when using FF 21. I revert back to 20 and everything is fine.

I am using MAC PRO, system 10.6.8 and for some reason, I upgraded to FF 21 and my HD started to get corrupted. I had to revert back to 20 and everything seem to be ok. I used disk utility to fix it and that worked but am afraid if I continue to upgrade I will get these error messages. I am not sure if this is the issue.

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
    Thank you.

My Photoshop Elements does not start any more. It gives response "Photoshop elements cannot start or continue because of missing file(s). Please reinstall." How do I get the installing file again (I bought it from Adobe via internet the first time december 2013?)

Did you download the Basic/Free version?
I also thought the Trial period was as long as you needed!?
What is your Warranty and Return Policy?
You get to use VueScan for as long as you want before you buy it, so we recommend you test it before you buy it to make sure it meets your needs.
All sales are final and there are no refunds.
Isn't this a bit harsh? Naah I actually prefer to solve problems, and if I offer refunds, people give up too easily. If I can't solve your problem after you send a few Problem Reports (see above), I'm happy to give a refund.

  • Installed Photoshop cc 2014 asks for serial # - corrupted Windows file permissions

More of a warning / heads up to all than a question - installing Photoshop cc 2014 [via the CC manager app] caused some Windows file (security) permissions to become corrupt corrupt on my system. Symptoms include cc2014 asking for serial number validation on startup (when, as a cloud version, it should not do so), then being unable to connect to the internet when you press the 'validate serial' button so getting that window into infinite loops, and - a real pain in the *** when trying to fix the above - causing abends of some windows shell functions that in turn cause windows explorer to crash and restart.
Anyhow, digging into this (fortunately, I am a long time Windows SysProg) I discovered that for reasons unknown, either the CC master app or the actual Photoshop cc2014 installer (or both) are changing file access control permissions on a number of files, mostly DLL's. Most of the files affected are in the (normally hidden) Program Data directory on the windows root disk, Some of them are in the Adobe subdirectory - so fair enough if they want to fool around with their own program - but others being changed are in the Common Files and Microsoft subdirectories. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this is necessary nor why Adobe feel the need to touch files that 'do not belong' to them - something dangerous in the extreme as an external app such as Windows Update might replace or 'repair' the files so touched, and if Adobe / CC are relying on file permissions on non-Adobe files, such changes could result in all manner of random and spurious problems / error messages occurring.
Anyhow, if, fellow Photoshop cc 2014 user, you get this happen to you then you can fix the file permissions by opening a console window [also called a "DOS box", or "command prompt" depending on your age and knowledge... 8-) ] and run the windows file checker with the command
"sfc /scannow". Make sure that you use 'run as administrator' to open the console window, or you'll get an error about sfc only being available to administrators. Also a very (very) sensible idea to close all non-essential running applications first to prevent any possibility of weird interactions happening.
Finally, check that the 'hosts' file in [root drive]:/Windows/System32/drivers/etc is valid - for some reason, it looks like the install tried to check or update this file (again, I have no idea why) but the result was a corrupted hosts file, which I assume is the root cause of the 'unable to connect to host' type internet error messages. Copy the file, rename it as 'hosts.txt' and edit it with notepad or wordpad. Look for lines containing garbage strings at the bottom of the file  (any line that starts with a # ignore, it is a comment, and any line that has IP addresses or host names should be ignored - though if they reference a site such as "someserver.adobe.com" you might want to treat them with suspicion if you continue to get internet 'cant connect to site' type errors.
Anyhow, when I fixed these two sets of problems, Photoshop cc 2014 started 'right first time' without all the BS messages about serial numbers etc.
Hope this helps somebody out there in AdobeLand......
    Rick

Update: I tried several times to reproduce the error, actually it dosen't occur. I changed nothing on my system, without reboot it twice. This is what I said in my beginning times: it occurs sometimes but often. I will keep you up to date.

  • Psd files are getting corrupted

    Hi
I am using PSE11 on a Mac, and have experienced PSD files getting corrupted twice now.  They are digital scrapbooking files, where I have started with a layered PSD file 'template' and personalised it (with lots of effort!).  I save it and close it.  Later I try and reopen it and it will not open.  The Adobe Photoshop Elements dialog box says 'Reading Photoshop Format' but it just gets stuck - the progress bar does not move beyond 1/3.  This is really bothersome as last time it happened I had no option but to start over and redo the layout.  Any ideas or suggestions as to why or how this might be happening?  What could I do about it?  I am reluctant to reinstall PSE, as I prefer version 11, have no disc, and last time it took many calls to Adobe to be directed to a place where I could download it (they kept telling me I would HAVE to buy the latest version.
    Thanks, J

A little more info about the files and just how you're saving them would help, as would info about your version of PSE. What color space are the files? Have you reset your PSE preferences?

  • My Photoshop 7 has started to corrupt documents I've worked on and I can't find out a way to stop it.

I have Photoshop 7 and have downloaded the Photoshop 7.01 download.  I have a 64 bit computer and have been running and working with photoshop for about a year with no trouble.   Now, It's started to corrupt files that I've manipulated in Photoshop.  I start with a JPEG or PSD document and when I try to save it as a JPEG it corrupts it and I get a message indcating that when I try to open it.   My objective is to insert the corrected file into a publisher document.   I've been doing this same operation for quite a while but now it seems to be unworkable.   I have Windows 7 home premium system.

You could also try resetting the photoshop 7 preferences.
Press and Hold the Shift+Alt+Ctrl keys just after starting the launch of photoshop 7
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the photoshop settings file
    Press Yes because you do.

  • My file gets corrupted while editing it

It happened already twice. I am working in one of my layers, I am changing the levels , the image in that layer gets black. I cant undo or go back in history. In the history pallette the original picture at the top goes black. If I try to save, all the layers get corrupted, with missing arbitrary squares in  all of them. The first time it happens the missing areas where white, the second time they change to black. The top picture in the history pallette maches the black or white color.
The small picture in the icon in my desktop looks normal , but when open is tottally corrupted. If I have other files open, all of them get corrupted also if I tried to save.

    More trouble
Now the wire behavior is happening in my layers selection, they are grey when selected instead of blue, so I can't work at all!
Thank you so much for follow my postings!! I am going crazy because my work depends on Photoshop!
Here is my system info, I have tried everything!, this latest  trouble are not affected by turning on and of the GL.
Can Adobe send you a virus? I used to have Abobe suit installed, from a previous Co I work for, but they didn't upgrade the license , I was not using the software but it was still installed in my HD. (I recieved a couple of messages from Adobe to let me know that the license was expired) but I didn't paid attention to it because I didn't used. I was using my license CS5 version.
I already uninstall that. The only other thing I did before all this started was buying Mac Keeper.
THANK YOU SO MUCH for all your help.

  • I'm trying to install a layer style (.asl) in photoshop cc 2014 and I get the error message 'Could not place the document 'filename.asl' because no parser or file format can open the file.' Any suggestions?

I get the same error when trying the same thing with the default styles, so it's not the file.

So, if you click on one on of the layer style sets already on the list, such as Text Effects 2, you get the same message?
Which version of mac os x are you using?
Did you upgrade your mac os with photoshop cc 2014 already installed?
Do you have the lastest version of photoshop cc 2014, which should be 2014.2.1
(listed at the top of Help>System Info from within photoshop)
Do you see the same layer styles as shown above on your list?
Have you moved/copied any plugins from an earlier version of photoshop to the photoshop cc 2014 plugins folder?
The layer styles shown on the list above are the styles that ship with cc 2014 and should be in
    /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CC 2014/Presets/Styles
(the mac applications folder where all the other mac applications are installed)
You might try resetting the preferences, but you might need to uninstall photoshop cc 2014 and then reinstall.
(don't drag the cc 2014 to the trash, but use the Uninstall Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 in the photoshop cc 2014 application folder)
    To reset the preferences
Press and hold down the Shift+Command+Option keys while starting photoshop cc 2014
Keep holding the keys down until you get a dialog asking if you want to delete the adobe photoshop settings file
    Press Yes

  • Files on SD card get corrupted on reboot of the Galaxy Note 2 (OS 4.1.2)

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from Verizon. I bought it new and it has an external SD card (32GB). It is not rooted and never has been rooted. It has worked flawlessly and have had no complaints until now. The problem started when I decided I wanted to load up the SD card with over 20GBs of music from my music library. I tried to use Media Monkey (the licensed version) to load the music and I started getting insufficient space. When I looked on the phone using Windows Explorer I noticed that only around 4GBs of data was in use on the external card but the internal storage was nearly full. Upon further investigation the lost.dir folder on the SD card contained hundreds of files with corrupt names and in the Music folder on the SD card there appeared to be shortened 6 to 8 character names with nothing under them and several of the music folders seemed intact with the long names and music under them. At this point I was suspecting both the Media Monkey software and perhaps something on the phone so I thought I would rule them out by removing all the music files from all storage areas and removed the SD card. I connected the SD card directly to my computer and reformatted it. It showed 32GB capacity. I copied 10GB of data onto the SD card as well as the “normal” folders that existed on the SD card. From the computer it looked great and all the folders and files were intact. I put the SD card back in the phone and powered it up. I then checked the file structure both on the phone using various file manager apps as well as Windows Explorer and noticed that the files and folders got corrupted in a similar fashion as well as the lost.dir folder being loaded with hundreds of files. I checked the size of the contents on the SD card and noted that the size was a little over 4GBs in use. So I believe I have ruled out hardware, and Monkey Media. I believe that there is some program/app on the phone that doesn’t support drives over 4GB (or some other limitation) – seems similar to older computers running XP or 16 bit programs not being able to deal with anything bigger than 4GB and would explain the shortened names.
I also have tried copying music from my PC via the USB cable to both the Phone Music folder and the Card Music folder – this works great and the files/folders remain intact until I restart the phone. It seems that the common issue is after a restart something scans the files and starts whacking away at MP3 files and the folders they are in. in My most recent tests I loaded up approximately 4GBs (total size of all contents on the SD card which is mostly MP3 files in the Music folder) on the SD card and after a reboot the size drops to 1.83GBs. After the reboot the Lost.dir folder gets loaded up with a large number of files (roughly correlating to the number of whacked files), and folders under Music get renamed with 6 to 8 characters that resemble the name of the folder. In addition, at some point I am unable to delete, rename, or copy new files onto the SD card so I end up using the format SD card option from within the phone. In general, no real problems seem to occur with the data on the phone itself but I am at the point where I have less than 1GB available on the phone so if I want to take lots of pictures or add more music I am in trouble since I can't reliably count on the data remaining intact on the SD card. Since the data seems to stay for days until I restart or some yet to be identified event, it would appear that this is not a hardware problem.
The only thing I can think of doing at this point is to reformat the phone and SD card. If I then load the default image with no add-on apps and try loading the music directly to the SD card from my PC, I will then narrow things down. But before doing that I wanted to see if this is a known issue and if there is a fix.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Take care…
    Bruce P.

  • Files getting corrupted on server

    Hi,
We have a problem where many files on a server appear to have become corrupted. I can see the timestamp has updated on the folder they are in at 9.12 this morning but there is no obvious update on the files other than they won't open.
Below is an example of an error message I get when trying to open an Excel file:
Excel cannot open the file 'David @ Readie Unsecured Work June 2013.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not become corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
Excel files are not the only types affected. The same happens with many other types e.g pdf and dwg.
I heard somebody mention that it could possibly be related to third party backup applications that run on Windows servers but I can't find any information on this.
Other thoughts are could this be a SAN issue or a virus?
    Cheers
    Paul

We have been dealing with this exact problem since 1/15/14. In 30 years, I've never been as stumped as I am now.
The symptom seems to be a sort of "rolling" corruption of binary files through certain CAD-related folders, affecting binary files like .XLS, .DWG, .DOCX and .PDF. Other shares on the same server don't seem to be affected. The corruption seems to run alphabetically
through the subfolders starting at the top and sometimes stopping before the end.
We rebuilt the (virtual) server on different hardware, from scratch. But the corruption started showing up again today.
Nobody's seen any cryptolocker messages, and repeated a/v scans have turned up nothing thus far. But we're thinking maybe to flatten each workstation and reload it, though that's a horrific task.
My thinking today was possibly a corrupt offline file cache on a laptop pushing back crap into the server. I've put in a policy to disable offline files to test that. But after reading these posts I'm back to the virus as the most probable. But
if this is Cryptolocker, it must be a very new variant that isn't being picked up.
We are running CrashPlan as a data backup, but that runs only at night and the corruption seems to happen only during the day. We do media backups using Backup Exec 2012 SP3, but it's disabled for now.

  • Files keep getting corrupted.

Heavily used, shared, files keep getting corrupted. Seems like StarOffice8 or Solaris (not sure which is responsible) doesn't do file locking! If someone opens the file, when it's already open, there's no indication of that! Obviously that can lead to edits being lost. However, the bigger problem is if 2 people save at the exact same time. In that case the file becomes completely mangled and unreadable!
Anyone have some solutions out there?

The Captivate version number is shown at Help > About Adobe Captivate.  But you have to be quick because it's right at the top and the list of credits start's scrolling immediately.  Annoys the heck out of me.
Having Admin rights to your PC is not the same as Run As Administrator on an app.  It's one of the (many) changes to the Vista and Win7 OSs intended to prevent malicious software from gainin a foothold.
If you're in a corporate IT environment chances are you don't have admin rights to your PC because that prevents people from willy nilly installing apps on their own workstations.  However, a good IT Support dude (who usually all DO have admin rights to everyone's computer) can usually configure the security privileges for a particular application to give you admin rights to it.
In the case of Captivate 5x and Win7, the app MUST be set up to Run As Administrator.  Otherwise some things just don't work.
