Photoshop CC layered files preview

Hey guys
I'm having alot of issues with thumbnail previews in Finder ever since I updated to Mavericks. Basically, any TIF-files that include layer masks won't show a preview at all in Finder. I just get the static TIF-file graphics, but no actual preview. Has anyone else encountered this issue? I have enabled to maximise compatability in photoshop, and all the files are either 16 or 18 bit files.

Keep in mind you don't strictly have to remove CS when you install CS5.  They can both coexist - just not be run at the exact same time.  That can give you some confidence that you'll be able to open the older files with CS if you need to.  In other words, you don't have to get everything exactly right ahead of time.

  • Photoshop CS layered files ok in CS5?

Does anyone know if there are problems opening layered files from Photoshop CS in CS5? I'm about to upgrade and need to know if the layered TIFFs and PSDs I created in CS will open as layers in CS5.

  • Photoshop Question Layered File

Hey, I have a question. I have never had a client ask me this but he told me if he paid me for a ad can I give him the layered file after? He need to make banners and large format printing...I have google up what is layered file, and it doesn't seem to give me the answer. I am wondering if he meant like editing the photo with tranparents background that is by itself and not paste on the ad? or if he mean when I finished the ad and save as it is and not flatten the layers?

What you client wants is the file not flattened, so he can avoid paying you to do the banners. If you give him the unflattened file, but sure to charge more than you would for the flattened one, because you are giving him not just a finished ad, but all the pieces to create new works from it.
And, of course you can't legally give him any fonts you used, so rasterize any text layers before handing it over.

  • Photoshop CS6 program error saving layered files

I recently updated my adobe software and I am still getting issues with saving layered files. I keep gettting program error - only occasionally. Sometimes saving to my desktop works and other times it doesnt. Other coworkers are experiencing same thing ever since they updated. It happens when working on a layered file for any length of time and need to save it out as a layered photoshop file. We are forced to flatten and save as a tif and loose our layers. I think it has something to do with background task but not sure...

Drag the file to your desktop, open the file there, do your edits, save, and then drag back.
Let us know what you are working off. If server, what server software are you using. System preferences >> spotlight, uncheck all items.

  • Importing Photoshop layered files to Motion

I'm having issues importing Photoshop layered files to Motion. When the file appears in the viewer, text or the shapes in the Photoshop file have changed colors. It's almost like motion doesn't recognize a gradient color in the text or shape. I've tried rasterizing the layer but it didn't help. Any suggestions?

hopefully above fixed that! not to hijack, but group layer labels don't seem to imported properly into apple products. is this due to the apple-adobe wars? i am anal so all my photoshop layers are grouped with some organization, but in motion it looks like a mess. thx,

  • Featured Request with psd layered files

Photoshop Layered files that include alpha channel show the alpha channel visually in aperture thumbnails and previews. They usually look like white or black masks around the subject.
This is a very undesirable feature. What is needed is the ability to ignore the alpha channel. This was done in iView several years ago when I was using that as my database. The software team in iView was able to quickly, in their next version, to add an ignore alpha channel check box, which eliminated seeing the alpha channels.
I hope the aperture team will consider this as a very necessary feature. Layered psd files are just as important as raw files to many photographers. I hate using more then one database to manage my files.
How many of you guys and gals out there are interested in this feature??? I personally consider this a very important feature for many photographers using a database type program like aperture.

Theoretically, yes, but this doesn't actually always work.
Despite Photoshop saving a composite preview, Apple's photoshop-reading routine also reads the alpha channel, and renders an alpha-masked version of the composite in Aperture, Preview, etc. This is true whether the alpha channel is visible/applied in the Photoshop document or not (ie, you can use quickmask to create a selection, save that selection, then have it turned off in your channels pallet, and it'll still get applied as an alpha mask to the complete flattened composite that Adobe provides, by Apple's photoshop/psd reading routines).
The only workaround that I'm aware of for this, is to create an empty alpha mask as the highest-level alpha channel in any document that has alpha channels (visible or not). Select your RGB channels, create a new channel, select it, select all and delete, then drag it to the position directly below the RGB channel set, save, and then Aperture will display the image properly.

  • Muse doesn't seem to see Photoshop Adjustment Layers

I like to place Photoshop files in Muse, so I can quickly edit a non-destructive format, instead of a JPEG. I recently noticed that some placed Photoshop files were markedly more dull in Muse than they appear in Photoshop.
Opening the Muse-created web page and comparing it with an open Photoshop file, it appears that Muse is not honoring my top layers, which are Photoshop Adjustment Layers.

As much as I believe that Muse is not really fit for purpose yet, I do not have the issues you are encountering with Opera.

  • Camera Raw edits are permanent in layered file, therefore "destructive"

I use scanned 35mm TIFF files and DNG digital files, converted from Nikon NEF files. I edit in Photoshop CS3. I use adjustment layers in Photoshop to retain the ability to revise as needed (the "nondestructive" route). To date I have used Camera Raw sparingly due to the fact that I cannot effectively change those edits once the file is converted to a layered PSD file. I say "effectively" because I guess it would be possible to reconstruct the file by editing the original DNG file containing the Camera Raw edits and add the layers added in Photoshop (some of the layers would probably not transfer effectively, e.g. spotting layers). However I do not think that that is a viable procedure.
Much is made of the nondestructive nature of Camera Raw edits. However, this appears to me to be illusory since one cannot open the layered file in Camera Raw. Among other books I have read the Fraser/Schewe books on Camera Raw and sharpening. The advice contained in those books are, in part, directly contradictory, i.e. they advise (1) to make all possible edits in Camera Raw since the edits are "nondestructive" and essential to obtaining the best quality file; and (2) always doing sharpening, except for any capture sharpening done in Camera Raw, on a sharpening layer. Well, one cannot accomplish both of these objectives. Once the file is converted to the layered PSD file say goodbye to the opportunity to change the Camera Raw edits.
So my questions are: 1. Have I missed something? Am I wrong about the inability to change the Camera Raw edits after the file is made into a layered PSD? If there is an effective way to do this, how do I do it? 2. What is your workflow for preserving the ability to undo your edits and how do you balance the workflow between Camera Raw and Photoshop? I find it a bit frustrating that the experts write these books, advocating the glory of nondestructive edits but fail to even comment on the fact that that ability disappears the moment a layer is added in Photoshop (an editing step they also insist is absolutely essential).
I will appreciate any assistance you are able to offer.

    Please read carefully:
    1.  NOTHING is "destructive" if you do not save over your original file.
    2.  Bearing in mind #1 above, there is no evil in developing input data into an image in which pixel values are set per the controls in Camera Raw.  That's what Camera Raw does best!
Learning from others is great, but keep in mind sometimes people have an agenda in what they teach and "rules of thumb" like "avoid destructive edits like the plague" are developed to start you off in the right direction.  I'm just saying use your common sense as well.

  • Opening Photoshop CS3 psd files in Photoshop CS2 (Mac Tiger 10.411)

Is it possible to open Photoshop CS3 psd files in Photoshop CS2? After I created them in Photoshop CS3 I reset the preferences to maximize compatibility "always", then I resaved all the psd files. Do you think this will work? I have to open them in CS2 tomorrow at work...

Also, some old features may have changed in the new version. Specifically, I had some CS3 files from a client that had smart objects that did not open correctly in CS2.
As I recall, CS2 was able to open a flattened version of the file, just not fully layered with smart objects.
I actually had CS3 on my laptop, just not on the tower I wanted to work on, so I opened the files on the laptop, rasterized the smart objects, and saved. After this, CS2 opened the files with layers.

  • How to open your Photoshop Touch project file in Photoshop

How to open your Photoshop Touch project file in Photoshop
When your files are stored in the Creative Cloud, you can access them on your mobile device using Adobe Photoshop Touch, or on your desktop computer using Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop Touch can open files in the following formats: PSD*, PSDX, PNG, JPG, and GIF. And, with a free plug-in for Photoshop CS5, CS5.1, and CS6 you can open the PSDX files created by Photoshop Touch in Photoshop.
[Note: PSD files can only be opened via the Adobe Creative Cloud. The file is converted,  layers are flattened to a single layer, and  other info that is only supported in Photoshop is removed.]
Download the plug-in (if you have CS6, skip this section)
    1. If you have CS5 and CS5.1, you are required to download a plug-in to be able to open your PSDX files in Photoshop. If you have CS6, you are not required to download the plug-in (it is native within the version). In a browser on your desktop computer, navigate to the Creative Cloud Homepage ( https://creative.adobe.com ). Sign-in to Creative Cloud using your Adobe ID, then navigate to the Creative Cloud Apps & Services page (https://creative.adobe.com/apps).
    2. Click download under “Touch App Plug-ins” to start the download and install process. Included with the installer is a plug-in for Illustrator CS6, which enables opening of Ideas files (.idea) in Illustrator, and a plug-in for Photoshop CS5 and 5.1, which enables opening of Photoshop Touch files (.psdx) in Photoshop.
    3. You will be asked (if you haven't already) to install the Adobe Application Manager. Follow the steps to install the manager, and the Touch App Plugin should begin the download and installation process. If it does not, click install next to the “Touch App Plugins” icon in the Adobe Application Manager to start the process.
    4. You're all set to start opening your PS Touch files in Photoshop CS6.
To save a Photoshop Touch file for upload to the cloud.
    1. Launch Photoshop Touch and ensure that you are in the organizer view. (Tap Done in the upper-left corner of the screen to move from edit view to the organizer view.)
    2. Tap to display the share menu.
    3. Select the file(s) to upload
    4. Select the file format to upload to the cloud. Then tap OK.
    5. Once you save the file format, you have a choice to e-mail the file as a attachment, or save a copy. By pressing cancel, it still can be uploaded to the cloud.
Uploading PS Touch files to the cloud.
    1. Tap the settings button in the top right corner.  Then tap My Account.
    2. Tap Sign in. Sign in with your Adobe ID. To obtain an Adobe ID, go to : https://www.adobe.com/account/sign-in.adobedotcom.html. Once you are signed in, the total storage available in your Creative Cloud is displayed.
Sync your Photoshop Touch files to the Creative Cloud.
    1. Tap the Creative Cloud icon. Make sure the Sync files toggle is switched to the on position.
    2. When Creative Cloud sync is turned on, you can see your files being synced to your Creative Cloud account.
Open a Photoshop Touch file in Photoshop
    1. On your desktop computer, launch a browser and navigate to the Creative Cloud website. When you are signed in, navigate to your Photoshop Touch file. Click to select the file.
    2. Tap the download button in the top right corner.
    3. When the download dialog button pops up, select PSD. Once the file has been downloaded, you can open in Photoshop (CS5, CS5.1, CS6) on your desktop.
    4. When the file is opened in Photoshop, it displays its layers (Note: that if the file is dragged and dropped, and NOT downloaded, it will not display the layers).

Lightroom 5.3 should be able to open D600 RAW photos.
The problem is most likely that you used some version of Nikon software to transfer the photos to your computer. This interferes with Lightroom's ability to read the files. If the files are still on your camera card, use Lightroom to directly access them from the camera card. If they are not on your camera card, you can still fix the files, see http://forums.adobe.com/message/6181267#6181267

  • "Place into Photoshop" with multiple files

I'd love to see this feature in Bridge
Import multiple files into an existing photoshop file (with a predetermined size ) as smart object layers in photoshop.
The options that Bridge currently offers falls short in 2 area
Load Files into Photoshop Layers-- does not import smart objects and creates a new photoshop file that ends up being as large as the largest imported file
Place into Photoshop--only lets you do one at a time
I need "Place into Photoshop" with multiple files
Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks!!

I agree, placing multiple files into your PSD as smart objects all at once like InDesign would be a great (and logical) feature for Photoshop to have. The only "workaround" I have is to create a shortcut using Ctrt+Alt+Shift+D (which is not used by anything), so you can place pictures/graphics more quickly, rather than using the menu each time.

  • PHOTOSHOP WITH LAYERS

i have read a lot of comments about how aperture handles photoshop files with layers. there seams to be quite some confusion.
how does aperture lose photoshop layers...
the answer is as simple and easy as it is annoying:
aperture imports photoshop files with layers just fine (check filesize or open the lib to varify. it's all there). however, as aperture treats every import as a new master, it will create a copy of the master before it opens it in photoshop. while doing so, aperture "expects" the master to be "just a photo" and therefore copies only the underlaying (combined) layer of the photoshop file. you end up with a flattened file in ps.
once this is done, you can open the file (your version) in ps and add layers. save it and they will be ok (and remain) in aperture. open the file again from aperture and all layers are ok. why? because aperture doesn't create another copy of it, it treats this (real new) file "only" as a version.
    here's the problem:
if you have a gazillions of photos with layers like i do, you can import them into aperture but never access the existing layers anymore. you might ask: why would you want to do that anyway, just flatten them? simple answer: all curves, colour adjustments etc are used as layer settings, keeping the "original" photos untouched. call it "photoshop" versioning if you want. so it makes a lot of sense actually.
    meta date
another major problem is that aperture doesn't allow changes to the most basic tags such as date, camera type, iso/asa etc. what about those 300'000+ photos from the archive, shot with "boring old" 35mm and middle format? being able to set some of the most basic data is a essential features i would have expected from a "pro" app!
apple: i'm generally a big fan of your products, but this time you really stress our "love-relationship" a lot! let us ps users treat files like adults (so we decide if we want to edit the master or not). allow to edit meta data. and for all the non-american users (yes, there is some secret land outside of the us, surprise!) change the keyboard shortcuts. and for those users who can only affort one bigger screen, allow them to use it (meaning, use the browser on a second smaller screen) or simply call it "switch monitors" if you like. and of course - dear aperture: if you create a "version" from the master, make it a "true" copy, not a flattened one. that would make all the difference.
(note: if my english *****, that's just fine, i'm just a 1.0 first release! or in non-apple-terms: a swiss guy with limited english)

aperture imports photoshop files with layers just fine (check filesize or open
the lib to varify. it's all there). however, as aperture treats every import
as a new master, it will create a copy of the master before it opens it in
photoshop. while doing so, aperture "expects" the master to be "just a photo"
and therefore copies only the underlaying (combined) layer of the photoshop
file. you end up with a flattened file in ps.
OK I think I'm getting it, thanks. I think I'm a pretty bright guy but I'm having issues keeping track of all this Master/Version stuff in Aperture (probably because it's not easy to know which is which).
So if I have this correct, here's the way it works:
    1. RAW files (the primary reason I'm playing with Aperture).
You start with a RAW master. It can't be altered anyway (by Aperture or any other RAW converter). However, you need to end up with a rendered color file (the role of a converter). When you do this and ask for the image to end up in Photoshop, you get a version. If you add layers while in Photoshop to this file, saving back in Aperture provides yet another version with layers or it's flattened? I'm assuming you end up with a new version (the 2nd) and this has layers. If you want to access it, you're going to have to do this outside of Aperture otherwise, opening from within Aperture (open with external editor) will produce a flattened new copy (version). Is that correct?
    2.Existing PSD files with layers.
You import a file into Aperture with layers because you want to use the DAM features of Aperture. The file has layers and they remain intact but should you wish to edit it FROM Aperture, the file you get will be a copy and it will be flattened (because Aperture doesn't want to mess with the original). Correct?
IF you export the master (PSD with layers) file, you get your original file with layers. But if you alter it in Photoshop to keep layers intact, and you want to bring it back into Aperture, you'll end up with a new Master (again with layers intact). So you have this kind of round-robin where the original master, layered PSD can be accessed but if any alterations take place from Aperture, the original is left alone but the version is flatted.
Seems what we need/want is an option to take the Master out of Aperture, edit it and have it reinserted back into the Aperture library in such a way that it replaces the original (something Aperture tries not to do).
once this is done, you can open the file (your version) in ps and add layers.
save it and they will be ok (and remain) in aperture. open the file again from
aperture and all layers are ok. why? because aperture doesn't create another
copy of it, it treats this (real new) file "only" as a version.
So here I'm not clear. When you say open your version in PS, is this using the Export or Open with command? Export should provide a layered file since you're asking for the Master right? Open With creates a copy yes?

  • How does Motion Handle PSD Layered Files?

I've done an extensive search on the Discussions looking for an answer to my problem without luck.
I have a layered file created in Illustrator CS. I exported the file to Photoshop so that I could retain the layers. The file opens and looks normal in PS. I want to import this file into Motion 2.0 so that I can animate some of the layers. The PSD file is in CYMK mode as Photoshop will not allow files to be saved as layers in RGB. Motion allows me to import the PSD layered file as individual layers but all of the text and graphics come in yellow and seem to have lost their original color. I have set PS File Handling to Highest.. If I flatten the file it looks fine in Motion but I lose the layers. Does anyone have any suggestions or methods that could help me?
    Thank you..
    j

The PSD file is in CYMK mode as Photoshop will not allow files to be saved as layers in RGB
I just created a RGB Photoshop file and added several layers, and saved it.
I used the import command from the File menu, and brought the file in with individual layers -- again saved in RGB.
Why won't your PS version allow you to save in RGB?
