Photoshop cc optimising for web and devices, keeping metadata for original size

Hello, I am having trouble working out why the CC version of photoshop keeps the metadata for the original sized photograph after being optimised for web and devices.
When I look at the file size after it has been optimised in finder on the Mac it says that the file is 177KB, when i bring it back into photoshop the image size reads as 4.64 MB. Can anyone help? Thank you

The 4.64 MB is the opened size in memory, after you close the file it is compressed to 177 KB to save disk space.
So 4.64 MB opened, 177 KB closed to take up less storage.
Kind of like folding your clothes and placing them in a suitcase.  My file is 8.58 MB open/407KB compressed.
If you do not want Metadata included in File > Save for Web, choose none from the Metadata drop-down menu.

  • Photoshop crashes when I try and save for web and devices. Making the image size smaller does not help.

I'm trying to make a lopping .gif from an animation that I made. It's 147 total frames. It's crashed about 6 times now every time I either try and Save for Web or even just save the document on my desktop so in case it crashes I can reopen PS and recover it. Making the image size smaller (original size is 1920 x 1080 with resolution 72) does not help, it still makes the *ding* error when I attempt to save. I made the image more than half of the original size and the Save for Web box actually came up that time, but when I tried clicking save it said there was an error and PS crashed without warning.

Look at the crash report for your Photoshop crashes see what they show

  • PS CS5 Save for Web and Devices reports "The operation could not be completed"  ?

I teach in a lab of 27 computers, 110 students and part of the curriculum is teaching students to "Save for Web and Devices" this year for some strange reason none of my students can access "Save for Web and Devices"  they get the error message "The operation could not be completed-A write permissions error has occured."
It has stumped our district top network support guru.
We are running PS CS5 12.0.4
He tried this posted fix but it did not work
    http://involution.com/2010/06/13/adobe-photoshop-cs5-write-perimissions-error-on-snow-leop ard/
It worked once last Friday but today it failed, I'm getting very nervous about being able to prepare my students for the ACA exam without this function.
In a discussion forum they suggested "zipping and deleting" the save for web preferences, I tried that.  Shut down Photoshop reopened it and that did not work.
I am at a loss.  Seems like a bug.
    Any ideas.
We are using iMacs running  Mac OS X  10.5.8

The error message may not simply address the location to where the students will save a single file. The error likely applies to the temporary location where the various optimized versions might be automatically saved as you preview the image as JPG/PNG/GIF. I would wager that you would not see this error when you are logged into one of the students' computers as an admin.

  • Photoshop CC closes or freezes when saving in save for web and devices

    Hello,
Since I have a new laptop with Windows 8, I couldn't get Photoshop CS6 anymore, so I downloaded PS CC.
It's working great the last days, but since yesterday PS freezes or closes everytime I try to save a .gif in save for web and devices.
    It drives me insane...
I hope someone can help me.
    Thanks in advance.

Trash the Save for Web prefs in the respective folder (C:\Progrom Files\Common Files\Adobe or your user home directory).

  • Photoshop crashes when saving for web and devices

When hitting saving for web and devices, Photoshop starts to render images but before it's done, it crashes. I get an error-popup with no text and the screen where normally the animation is shown is red. Then Windows comes with a crash report and I can only quit Photoshop.
I have an animation of over 150 frames, but just some black and white lines, no color.
    I'm using Photoshop CS 5.5 on Win7.
I tried deleting the preferences in AppData/Roaming etc, but no result, still crashes.
My Photoshop is also updated to the latest version.
    Help?

  • Photoshop stalls on Measuring memory & save for web and devices

    Mac OS X 10.6.4
    MacBook Pro
    CS4 Photoshop Extended
    Hey there,
I would be grateful if anyone can shed any light this problem which has occured out of nowhere.
I'm a web designer so this problem is causing chaos at the moment. When I try to save an image for 'web and devices' - I will get to the 'save for web and devices' window but then Photoshop 'freezes'. It doesn't seem to make a difference on file size big or small - Photoshop just freezes up. Sometimes Photoshop wont do it instantly, I will be able to save about 3 - 4 files and then it will freeze up. The only way to re-start the process is to force quit the application and start again.
However sometimes when I re-start Photoshop, the application will hang on 'measuring memory' instruction on the start up panel - where I then have to force quit and sometimes re-start my machine. This whole process is obviously very time consuming and a right pain.
Just for info I have played around in the Preferences - just to see if changing the 'memory usage' would have any effect - this doesn't seem to of made a difference. I currently have the setting at 2211mb (71%) which is within the ideal range (1689-2211mb).
Any guidance or help would be most grateful.
    Cheers
    T

Definitely – it may or may not help but it’s easily done (command-alt-
    shift on starting the program).
Though it is somewhat annoying having to recreate the Preferenes-
settings one has changed and getting the Tools back to the preferred
    settings.
If you should trash your prefs just don’t forget to save your custom
    Presets (Brushes, Patterns etc.) before.

  • Save for web and devices not selectable

Hi, I cant seem to select the "save for web and devices" option in the 64 bit version of photoshop CS5, but it works on the regular version, and I never use the regular version, all my preferences are on the 64 bit version and too many have been changed for me to be comfortable to start using it instead of the 64 bit one. Is there a fix for this to work again?

    Hi there,
If Silkrooster's suggestions don't help after verifying the image mode you are using, you may try to restore your Photoshop preferences. See the video below for easy-to-follow instructions:
Julianne notes at the 5-minute mark that the second method she outlines will get rid of your color settings, keyboard shortcuts, workspace prefs, etc. This may affect the preferences you mentioned being accustomed to in your post, so please keep that in mind.
If that doesn't solve your issue, either, you may need to troubleshoot User Permissions by following the instructions at one of the links below, depending on your OS:
Macintosh: http://www.apple.com/findouthow/mac/#useraccounts (Be sure to change the “New Account:” pop-up from [Standard] to [Administrator] when creating the new user)
    Windows XP: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404859.html
    Windows 7: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/create-local-administrator-account-windows.html
    I hope this helps!

  • Save for Web and Device Grayed menu grayed out

Using Photoshop 11.0.1 (CS4) and Mac OSX 10.5.6), I have an action that saves a retouched file first as a high quality jpg and then as a optimized jpg for the web. It has worked fine in the past, but today when running the action I received a warning that the Export command was not available. I tried manually exporting the using the Save for Web and Devices menu item, but it is grayed out and not available. The file is sized to 1024 pixels on the longest side, no layers and in 8 bit mode.
So far I have done the following:
Trashed the Save for Web preference file
    Repaired permissions
    Scanned for viruses
    Rebooted the system
Any other ideas short of a reinstall?

    Trash Photoshop preferences.
    Repair Permissions.
    Check on available disk space.

  • PSD files saved for web and devices  show up as broken when opened Dreamweaver. How can this be fixed?

PSD layouts saved for web and devices show up as broken links in dreamweaver. Previews in browsers are fine, but I keep getting and error message that says the files have been blocked. What is the fix for this?

You can also try out Project Parfait. It's a new experiment from Adobe that’s currently online and free to try out and use.
It allows easy PSD comps-to code workflows.

  • Slice and 'saving for web and devices' not saving all images in selected area

Ive designed my site in illustrator and now im using slices and save for web and devices.
When I save a slice as a jpeg or gif it saves the text and but not the background image behind it. I haven't locked the background image and all the content is on the same layer in illustrator so why is it doing this and how can I stop it?
    Thanks

Thanks for your reply.  Yes, my Photoshop CS5 is updated to 12.1.  I'm running OSX 10.5.8 and have tried viewing in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome with no improved success.
I have been reading these forums for about 3 hours trying to find the answer to this question but am still at a loss.  I have found one article here:
    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7974006/overlapping-image-in-photoshop-splice-how-to-fl oat-with-css
which explains using an "absolute" value in CSS to lock images in place.  I'm currently working in Dreamweaver to see if it's a common error in Photoshop when resizing browser but is easily fixed on the CSS side.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks!

  • Saving GIFs for web and devices

We are wanting to see if the Creative Cloud version of Photoshop will make animated GIFs any smaller when you "save for web and devices" than previous versions like CS6 or CS5. Does anyone know? !

These articles may also provide some inspiration for further optimization:

Although meant for PNGs, the article mentions a number of colour reduction techniques and workflow methods that may be useful for GIF animation optimization as well.

  • Saving for web and devices scaling problem

    Hello,
Whenever I try and save a 'larger' PSD by slicing it, and saving it for web and devices It always seems to 're-size' it and limit me to a certain percentage such as 70%.
For the projects I'm working on - I NEED the width to remain at 750 pixels - rather then 70% or even 40% of that - and it won't allow me to change it back to 100%.
I understand the JPG image will be large - but is there anyway I can turn this setting off? It only seems to be happening since I got Photoshop for creative cloud...
    Thanks!
    Andy

Because you are slicing, the remaining portion could be a spacer image(s). If you don't need slicing which is used for creating multiple images cut out of the original to allow for clicking to a URL. Then I would advise finding another route.
Even though you can get a warning the image is too big, there is a possiblity that save for web will still work just fine for that image.
If not then you can do the work your self, by duplicating the image then either reduce the size of the image with image>Image Size...  or crop the image using the crop tool. (the reason for the duplicate file is a precaution to make sure you don't accidently save the reduced file to the original and therefore throwing out data.)
That said, you could also use the image processor which can save in psd, jpg, and tiff. It can also be used to reduce the image size. The beauty of image processor is that it can work on single files or a folder of images. The new images will be placed in a new folder with the name of the format and will be located in the same folder as those it is processing.
Another option is to use camera raw. Since camera raw can load tiff and jpg images (Photoshop CC can also load png files) you can use camera raw to crop images the crop is stored in the metadata therefore the crop is non-destructive. Allowing you to uncrop at any time you choose. If you have photoshop CC you can also use camera raw as a filter which means any layer or all layers in your photoshop file can be edited in camera raw allowing non-destructive crops.
As you can see with photoshop there are multiple ways to accomplish the same thing, some easier, some quicker some more accurate and they will fall into either a destructructive or non-destructive process.
So hopefully all this information does not confuse you any as it is meant to help provide alternative approaches to your issue.

  • Save for web and devices - grayed out. Why?

Hi. I just bought a new computer, new hard drives, etc.
So, I had to reinstall Windows XP pro and all my software applications, which includes Adobe Creative Suite Design (standard edition). All loaded well and my computer is up and running nicely.
only one problem.... in Photoshop the "Save for web and devices..." function is grayed out and unavailable. :-(
This is a feature I use quite a lot. Before I try uninstalling and re-installing, which, as you probably know is a lengthy process with these Adobe products, I'd like to first verify if this is a known problem and/or something I can deal with without re-installing Photoshop. I did a quick Google search, but couldn't find anything useful. Did find one post in some different forum by someone who described a problem similar to this one, but didn't receive an answer.
If anyone can help me out, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks.

You would get this if your files were 16bit or multichannel.

  • Save for Web and Devices (Illustrator style?)

Ive used the slice tool to mark out the images for exporting
    from my Fireworks document.
Does Fireworks have a 'Save for Web and Devices' feature like
Illustrator does? I want to have the 4-up display where you can see
the original image and file size in one section and use the others
to vary the JEPG/ GIF settings to get the best combination of file
size and image quality. I want to be able to save different
settings for each slice (as you can do in Illustrator).
I cant find this feature but it seems weird that a web image
optimization program wouldn't have it. I tired opening my file with
Illustrator and Photoshop but the slices wernt imported aswell.
Ive got CS3, is this option in CS4?
    thanks

FW bypasses the extra step used by PS and AI. In the main FW
    window,
choose 4-Up. Select the slice you want to optimize and set
    your
optimization settings via the Optimize panel. Everything bu
    the selected
sliced will be screened back a bit, so you focus on the
    active slice. It
will change on screen as you alter the optimize settings.
If you want to optimize several slices using the same
    settings,
    shift+click to select them.
When you're done, choose File > Export. Make sure to set
    Images Only as
your Export option and in the Slices field choose Export
    Slices. If you
want all slices exported, make sure that Export Selected
    Slices is NOT
    checked.
If you don't want unsliced areas also exported, also make
    sure Include
areas without slices is not checked.

  • Error when trying to "Save for Web and Devices"

    Hello All,
I have a little issue with Photoshop CS3 on the XP Pro platform.  I get the error when I try and "Save for Web and Devices".  This is the actual error.  "the exception unknown software exception"  uhh... lol
I currently work for a school district.  I'm the Tech/Network Admin for the entire district.  We have a lab setup with some new PC's (As of last June)  They all have 2 gig of ram Core 2 Duo 2.4 ( I think).  Pretty good machines.  We currently have an image built for them so essentially they are all the same builds.  We recently just updated the image as of a month ago.  In talking with the teacher who does the tech classes in this lab, he recently ran into this problem as of a week ago.
We are a Novell based campus.  Zen 7 support pack 7 I think as well.  We do however lock down the machines.  Dynamic Local users.  Everything gets pulled off the machine when the user logs out.  Now I do sort of think that this issue is related to some type of policy we're pushing down because when we use our "Tech" account which does have local admin rights to the PC we don't get an error.  We haven't modified the policies here in quite a while.  School is almost over and we'd like to relax for a bit and not cause any problems.  LoL
And in fact all the PC's in our High School have this issue.  And currently we have about 3 different models not including the one I listed above.  Any advice is much appreciated.  Cause I'm pretty stuck on this issue.
    Thanks,
    Jesse

Save for web and devices saves its own prefs to retain the last active settings. When it can't do that, it will fail. You may wish to grant write permissions to the Documents and Settings\App Data\Adobe\ Save for Web folder. The same applies to Device Central...
