Photoshop CC: Save For Web function does not update filesize previews when I change filetypes
I recently tried to save some web banners and wanted to optimize for smallest filesize with best looking output, and as I changed filetypes from Gif to Jpeg to PNG, the preview at the bottom of the window that usually updates with estimated filesize was not changing and the preview image would not change as well. The issue made it impossible to predict the output and required that I actually save in all the variations, then reopen them to see the end result.
My software is up to date.
Not really sure what it can be.
Please help.

'Save for Web' action does not set transparency for gifs ??!?
I recorded an action that just performs a 'Save for Web' while setting the white background to transparent.
The action does not save/preserve the transparency, in any mode I run it (i.e. Destination None | Save&close | folder).
Is this a known bug ?!? the same exact 'Save for Web' procedure do create a transparent background when performed interactively.
Thanks, ciaoSame issue. Hoping someone responds to this thread soon

Why does the Fireworks save for web function give better results than in Photoshop?
Having used the trial version of Fireworks, I have noticed that the save for web function gives greater compression and image quality than saving for web in Photoshop. Why is this?
As Adobe are not continuing in developing Fireworks, does anyone know if will they will improve the save for web function in Photoshop to match the Fireworks version?
Are there any third party companies who anyone can recommend who will process large volumes of images for web?
ThanksOne of my favourite topics ;-P
First, the save for web function in Photoshop has not seen any real updates in a long time. In Fireworks PNG export allows for fully transparent optimized files with indexed 256 or less colours, which is impossible in the save for web function in Photohop. It is unsupported.
This is one of the reasons why Fireworks does a much better job than Photoshop. Another reason is that Photoshop adds meta junk in its exported files, and this also increases the file size (and should be removed, because there are also a number of fields which include information about your setup).
One other caveat is that Photoshop's save for web functions neither allows for a choice in chroma subsampling, and instead decides automatically below a certain quality threshold to degrade the colour sharpness quality. The user has no control over this. (Fireworks also limits the user this way.)
One thing to be careful of: FW's jpg quality setting, and PS's quality settings are very different - a 50 in Photoshop is not the same 50 setting in Fireworks.
For jpg optimization I generally use RIOT (free): http://luci.criosweb.ro/riot/
(When you install, be careful NOT to install the extra junkware!)
Fireworks cannot change the chroma subsampling to 4:2:0, which does degrade the quality a bit compared to RIOT and Photoshop in my experience. Photoshop adds useless meta information, even if the user tells it not to do that. RIOT allows you to remove that information, saving 6k. RIOT also offers an automatic mode that optimizes existing jpg images without degrading the quality further, and often saves 10k or more, depending on the images.
Interestingly enough, in my tests exported Fireworks jpg images are always reduced in file size by RIOT, due to FW's jpg export limitations, without any image degradation.
In my tests FW's jpg quality versus file size turns out to be the worst of all three. RIOT generally wins, or is at least on par with Photoshop.
As for PNG export, Photoshop's save for web function is quite abysmal. No 256 colour full transparency export is possible, while Fireworks does support this.
Having said that, there is a free alternative that leaves both Photoshop AND Fireworks in the dust: Color Quantizer. http://x128.ho.ua/color-quantizer.html
CQ is an amazing little tool: with it anyone can create PNG files with full transparency and reduced to ANY number of colours! It means that a 512 colour PNG with full transparency is now very easy to do. On top of that, for more difficult images a simple quality mask brush tool allows the user to control and retain even small colour details in a PNG, while reducing the file size to an absolute minimum.
CQ is one of the best kept secrets of a Web Developer's toolkit. And it is free!
Both RIOT and Color Quantizer have a built-in batch mode. Both are available for WIndows. Not for Mac. If you are on a Mac, try imageOptim. Not nearly as good as RIOT and CQ, but quite passable.
PS to be fair, the newest versions of Photoshop do allow for export of 8bit PNGs with full transparency through the use of its Generator functionality. But again, it cannot compete with CQ. And as far as I am aware, Generator cannot be used in Photoshop's batch processing (which, btw, is very slow! For simpler daily image processing tasks I have to do in batches, I prefer IrfanView, which is lightning fast! IrfanView). -
Photoshop CS6 Save for Web not working
I am using photoshop CS6 (cloud) on Mac (10.7.5) and when I use the Save For Web > save, i got the following popup :
---- Adobe Save For Web Error ----
Could not complete this operation. An unknown operating system error has occurred.
I have been using CS6 for months and it worked fine yesterday before shutting done. Today morning at startup it was not working anymore.
I have tried to uninstalled and reinstalled photoshop, clear my presets, shut down/started up, repair disk, repair permissions,... without succes.
The save for web function still works in CS5.
Any help will be very much appreciated,
Raphaël K.I found the solution (took forever to consolidate all the answers) for OS X 10.9 + Maverick. Finally!
1. Change permissions (as AOTPR says) to your User/Library/Preferences file so that your admin and user (the one you are using) has read + write permissions within the Get Info pane (command+I). You may have to add them with the sign.
2. Delete Adobe save for web 12.0 Prefs & Adobe save for web 13.0 Prefs files within the User/ Library/ Preferences folder. These may be hidden for some people, so when in a finder window, hold Option(alt) and click Go from the main top menu (keep holding Option/Alt) and click Library — the full Preferences folder should open for you.
3. Change the view when in Save for web pane in PS. If you have it in Cover Flow — it won't work. Change it to another view like List or Columns view.
Presto! Works for me on Maverick.
Thank god. It took forever to get this cleared up!!

Save for Web error: Could not complete operation
Hi everyone.
I'm having trouble using the Save For Web function on Photoshop CS6. The initial dialog opens fine and I can select any file type to save to etc.
Once I click 'Save...' I get the error "Could not complete this operation. An unknown operating system error has occurred."
I have looked up this error and from previous threads I have tried deleting the Save for Web library files and restarting, however this doesn't work (Unless I am deleting the wrong file?).
I'm running a 2.6 GHz Retina Macbook Pro with the latest update installed for Photoshop. I have 16 GB ram.
Strangely, I have a PC running the same version of Photoshop CS6 and it works fine for this function.
Any idea what this could be? I have posted my system info below.

Photoshop CS3 "Save for web" doesn't work
Hi everybody. I noticed one weird thing. When I want to use "Save for web" function on my Photoshop CS3 to save some jpg file and reduce size, the dialog window just doesn't appear. I clicked Save for web and nothing happen. The window of the file a wanted to save just get grey. I'm new in CS3 an it worked well in my CS2. BTW I use MacBook Pro and CS3 for Mac.
Guys, any ideas?
Thanx a lot. :-)Hi all,
Deleting the SFW prefs worked for me.
My Photoshop CS3 was working fine till I (probably unwisely) tinkered with system files to free up some space.
Re-installed CS3 from scratch but still couldnt "Save for web".
Then I found this tip suggesting deleting the SFW prefs and BINGO! Back in acion.
Thanks for the tip.

Photoshop CS6 Save For Web UI extra border Bug
Last week we finally got upgraded to CS6, and I'm dissapointed to see the visual defect I reported in CS5.5 still exists in Photoshop CS6 Save for Web. The details and screenshots are all the same as in my previous thread. http://forums.adobe.com/message/3843054#3843054
Isn't there a way to fix this? I rely on PhotoShop to be pixel perfect, not to add extra distracting lines and borders to my work.FYI, just to test I just did a crop of an image, then screen grabbed the result.
To ensure the edge is visible, I changed the workspace background from the dark gray I usually use to a lighter gray... Here's the pertinent part of the workspace...
A closeup of the upper-right corner:
Notably, I don't see any black line around it like you showed. This leads me to wonder whether I interpreted your screen grab properly...

PSE 7 - Save for Web - Now Defaults to GIF - Prefer JPEG - Can I change it?
When using PSE 7.0 File > Save for Web, I generally want the files to be JPEGs. In previous versions, the file format on this menu would stay at JPEG once you set it there. Now, each time I open the menu it returns to GIF. Is there a way to have it default or hold as a JPEG in that field?
Thank you!
BeverlyIs there a competing program that is as good as PSE that I could try? I am having a few annoying problems with this program and I think it is time to try something else. I was really excited to use the Photoshop family of photos, but these three problems are getting me down:
1) I hate that the save for web function defaults to .gif. It is really annoying. The fact that they have a tool to fix it yet that doesn't even work makes me even more bummed out.
2) When I try to go from the organizer to the editor, it literally takes about 20 seconds for the photo to load. That is a big waste of time.
3) Sometimes, when I am in the quick edit mode, the zoom feature doesn't work. Other times, the cropping feature doesn't work. I click it back to the full edit, and those functions work. It is odd.
It isn't like I am trying to split the atom here. I am relatively computer savvy, and all I want to do is edit photos. I have had many problems like this with the previous version as well as the latest one. -
Lync for Mac 2011 does not update Presence properly.
Hello all,
I work in a Enterprise environment, we run Active Directory and bind our Macs to the domain. We use Lync for Mac, and I've noticed that on the Mac clients, the user status does not update accordingly. When my users are in a conference call, it shows
available, etc. It works fine on a Windows machine with that same user.
If the event is on the Outlook calendar, sometimes it will show them as away during that time period, but it does not seem to update when on the phone/in a meeting, etc.
Any advice would be appreciated, my user is on Mac OSX 10.9.3 and Lync 14.0.8.
Thank you,
MichaelWe are seeing the exact same thing at our company. A hundred or more Macs all with broken presence.
Its issues like this that have us looking at Jabber now - Cisco doesn't seem to have buggy OS X software like Microsoft. That will be 40,000+ seats lost due to this and other issues. Maybe if enough hit MS in their pocketbook
they will start paying more attention to Macs.. or at least test them before rolling out software.
Note a few things regarding our setup:
1. Our Lync is on-prem 2010 and 2013 mix
2. Our email is in 365
3. We are using ADFS and FIM for SSO, Dirsync.
4. We do not domain join our Macs. (back when Lion wrecked all our domain joined accounts we stopped with that foolish practice)
It worked with previous versions of Lync 2011.
It works for zero Lync 2011 users. Lync 2013 on-prem domain joined machines work. We see the same thing where a Mac users also logged into 2013 on a Windows machine will help update the Lync 2011 client... but its not an acceptable work-around.
I suspect its having difficulties with the external cert. -
Photoshop CC is crashing regularly when I perform Save For Web function
I'm finding that my Photoshop CC, running on Windows, is continually crashing - most notably following a Shift+Ctrl+Alt+S command. Any ideas?
Sounds to me like you may have the RAM allocation for Photoshop set too high. Press Ctrl-K to go to preferences and click on Performance. If your RAM is set higher than 70%, you'll need to lower it...close Photoshop and then reopen it so the new setting will take effect.
The other thing that might be causing it is the size of the image, Save For Web is notorious (especially in older versions) for not playing nice with larger files. Try an image with a smaller pixel dimension and see if that helps. Since you are saving for web, it's advisable to resize the image before saving for the web.
One last note - when installing CC on a Win 64 bit box, make sure that the desktop icon or task bar icon actually points to the 64 bit version of CC. Photoshop CC installs both the 32 and 64 bit versions. -
Elements 10 - "Save for Web" function not working.
No response when clicked. Menu closes. That's all. As far as I know, everything else is fine. Using Win7-Home Prem.
Ken --
First of all thank you for taking an interest in this problem.
Honestly, I'm not sure if it ever worked. I've used the function but I'm not sure if the last time I used it I was using Elements 8 or Elements 10. Sorry.
Yes, I have installed additional plug-ins and filters a few of which I found on the internet. Are there any that you know of that could cause Save for Web to stop? I'm guessing yes or you wouldn't have asked.
The file you asked about is there in the folder specified.

Photoshop CS4 Save for Web JPEG Colors are Off
Ok, I've scoured the web to see about finding a solution for this and tried every possible option and still I'm coming up empty handed. I have a website that I'm developing for a painter and have an image converted to sRGB, and the colors are where I want them to be. I use Save for Web, and every iteration suggested online for the, embed and don't embed, convert to sRGB and dont' covert, use document color profile, use windows, yada yada. Here's a recent example:
when i preview the image with Firefox, here's the difference:
The photoshop version is on the left and is the color that I want/need. The image on the right is firefox and saturated. If I save for web with embedded profile, safari is accurate, whereas firefox is saturated, so it's obviously discarding the icc and using some color space that I can't see in my file. I did notice that if I have my Custom, Proof and select Monitor RGB, then I can see what firefox will ultimately display and also what Safari will display if i have Embed ICC Profile unchecked in the save for web dialogue box.
I know that CS2 and CS3 were easier and less squirrely with color managing web files, but I think CS4 has some juju under the hood. Am I the only one out there frustrated, or like other web developers just accept the inaccuracy and move on? Since this is fine art, I'm doing my best to dial the color in, but it's been all afternoon beating on this.
Any ideas, I'm ready to install CS3 and see if my life will be easier, but I'm wondering if having Photoshop CS3 and CS4 will cause any issues.>> your logic
That's my rant and I'm sticking to it.
The OP wrote he doesn't want or need to discuss the pros and cons of embedding profiles in Web images, but for the sake of anyone else reading this:
1) Embedded ICC Profiles increase file sizes (about 4K per image).
a) I may have over 100 thumbnails and dozens of photos on one page,
b) Plus, I may have an image sliced into many pieces.
c) That additional 4k per image, per slice, will add up fast and may kill dial-up traffic.
2) Very few computers use color-managed web browsers or calibrated monitors anyway, and
3) Problems with matching/blending image's edges or background color with a filled box or page color.
d) If I tag the image — on Mac colormanaged browsers — the color will mismatch the box/page color on managed browsers because the tagged image is being Converted to MonitorRGB, and the untagged page or box color is having MonitorRGB Applied.
e) This matching or blending a pixel-based graphic to page color is a pretty big deal to do correctly in professional web publishing.
f) If I publish untagged sRGB images/graphics, the box/page color will match the images and blend correctly in all browsers.
I WILL QUALIFY my general recommendation about embedding profiles in pixel-based web images for the following reasons:
1) You are posting fine-art images, creative portfolios, and are not worried about adding 4K additional data per image, per slice.
2) You are not worried about having Mac visitors seeing graphic blends or photos mismatched to a background color.
3) You understand only properly-profiled monitors and color-managed web browsers will benefit from your embedded profile — and it is likely 99% of web surfers don't have either — however, if you are targeting the one percent who do, then there is your number one best reason for tagging web photos with embedded profiles. -
Photoshop CS6 save for web some colors change?
I have a picture with large area of color: #fffdfd, when I save it for web (jpg) this color is changed to #fefcfd (in JPG).
I just can not save as JPG with #fffdfd.
(was trying uncheck convert to sRGB, do not embed color profile - always #fffdfd changes to #fefcfd when save for web)
However, color #fefcfd when save for web , does not change.
Why some colors change and some not? Is it a bug ?
Window7 64bit, Photoshop CS6Save for Web & Devices will strip some color data from the file.
Browsers aren't color managed. Most file formats on browsers assume they're sRGB. While Photoshop gives you an option of embedding sRGB to the document color space, it also strips off data that is not relevant. This is a common occurence.
PNG-24 on the other hand will give you the exact color match.
Also, Save for W&D, JPG quality matters a lot - The same color at Quality 10,20,30,40,50...100 wil give you different color reproductions on the JPG end output.
If you're concerned that much about an offset of +/- 1 hex value to your RGB colorspace, dont save for web & devices. Do a 'Save As' instead. Then use an image editing/ resizing application such as ResizeMe to resize the quality of your document. This, in most cases will retain colorspace information but just drop the resolution and quality of the image - giving you a lesser filesize.

Photoshop CS3 Save for Web Outputs Large Filesizes
Hi guys,
I have been using Photoshop CS3 for many happy years and over the last few weeks I have noticed something very unusual. When I use Save for Web and save jpegs, gifs, or other images, the estimated file size which shows in the corner is being heavily inflated when I look at the actual file size of the files it's outputting.
I am having to open up the files in Preview and then do another save as jpeg to get the file size down!
For example, I regularly make small 200px wide by 96px high logos for a clients website and have been doing this for a few years. The average file size of these is about 5KB, which is what I aim for. When I use Save For Web now, it will indeed show an output size of around 5KB, however, Finder reveals the size is 17KB or higher!
Why is it doing this and how do I put a stop to it? It is very frustrating and time-wasting to use third-party apps to fix simple small things like this. Please don't suggest I upgrade to CS5 to fix the problem.
CheersThanks for your help, I don't know if I reset my save for web preferences as I tried the keyboard shortcut method shown in the other forum post you provided, however, I didn't see any feedback indicating if it worked. Also, they were using PC keyboard commands not Mac, so I tried using either Control and Command just in case.
Either way I tried another thing while I was in the Save for Web dialog, I clicked on the little arrow the points to the right underneath the Done button and to the right of the Preset drop-down. It is called the "Optimize Menu", I then clicked on "Edit Output Settings" and chose "Default Settings" from the "Settings" drop-down.
My saved image file is now 5KB! Finder shows it as 8KB, however, Dreamweaver is showing it as 5KB which is all I wanted!! Hooray! -
How to fit photoshop CS5 'Save for web' window to Macbook Air 11"
I have tried Photoshop CS5 on Macbook Air 11", however I realized that the 'Save for web' window which I always use is too big to fit into the 11" screen (The buttons kind of cut off at the bottom of the window). Anyone got any suggestion or solution for this? Thanks in advanced.
Thanks Gene. Yes, I wanted to be able to easily access my Dropbox folder from the Save for Web window. I originally had wanted to be able to add the Dropbox icon on the left where the other icons are for Network, Libraries, Recent Items, and Computer are located. However, it may not be possible to do so. However, the link that you gave me allowed me to create a new Library that linked to my Dropbox folder so it's doing the exact same thing that I had wanted I'm just having to click on Libraries first. I can live with that Thanks for the help!
Nancy, it's okay. I've done it a million times too and I probably could have asked the question in a better way. Thanks for the response!
