Photoshop CC Smudge/Blur Tool Makes Photoshop Unresponsive

Photoshop will lock up the second I utilize the smudge tool and become unresponsive. I have tried turning all other programs off, loading the most current driver, tweeking my performance settings...basically everything I can think of. It is so frustrating. I am working with windows 7.

Try turning off GPU acceleration in the preferences and restart Photoshop, does this help? System information? Did it worked before?

creative cloud photoshop blur tool not work as it should be !
I go to blur a painting i am doing and it does not blur enough and I am using wacom Intuos 5 med pen tablet.
and I even set the tablets sensitivty for pressure lower then default and still not getting the blur tool to do its job.
I even adjusted the brush settings too to be able to blur even more on hard settings, still nothing.
at least it not bluring enough to see any major changes.
the only way i can blur anything is by using the fliters blur or the brushes ( mixer brush ) settings to mix colors and do it that way.
(note) I will not post my systems specs sorry I don't do that and even the tech from adobe said I do not have to. and so I wont !
just need advise not to share system specs.
and thats what this forums board is for getting advice and read what others say about the issue at hand.
it's not to post or share system specs  !!!
so with that out of the way I need advice only please ?

    Hi,
It might be your image is too big in terms of pixel dimensions for the blur tool to work well.
If you zoom to 100% do you see any change when using the blur tool?
What are the pixel dimensions of the image?
    (Image>Image Size)
If you try a small image, does the blur tool work?
What about when you use the mouse instead of your tablet?
Can you at least tell us what operating system and version of photoshop your using?

  • What is wrong with the Photoshop CC 2014 blur tool?

What is wrong with the Photoshop CC 2014 blur tool?  It only blurs pixels of initial contact with the tool.  It does not blur any pixels that are swiped by the tool as you drag it across the screen.  Photoshop CS6 blur tool works just fine.  Togeling between two versions of Photoshop to get the work done is a drag!

all my settings both in the Options Bar and the Brush Panel are the same whether in CS6, CC, or CC 2014.
    Let’s see the screenshots.

  • Blur Tool doesn't work properly in Photoshop CS6

I like digital painting and just got a new Wacom Intuos. I wanted to finish a picture in PS C6 but everytime I use the blur tool it makes some weird edges, which it didn't make before!
    How can I fix it?

The Layer seems to be empty and you don’t have »Sample All Layers« checked, so that seems strange.
Another point, though: Why not apply the Layer Mask to the Group instead of applying it to each Layer individually?

  • Blur Tool Problem - Random Lines (Adobe CC 2014.2.1 Release)

    Hi,
I'm hoping that I haven't ticked some obscure option, but I have been using the Blur Tool in Photoshop CC for a while and after the most recent update have had issues with it - basically, when I try to use it to blur a specific area, it randomly goes all over the place (as if I'd grabbed the mouse and moved it rapidly in a random direction).  Obviously if I can't use the blur tool with precision (well, any tool really!) it makes it hard to work!
    Some interesting notes / observations:
The sharpen tool works perfectly - only sharpens where I point it, which makes me think that it's not an issue with my mouse.  No other tools I use have the issue either - only the blur tool!!
I have no other pointing devices plugged in (I had a pen tablet plugged in - long story, prefer the mouse over the tablet :-)) so it's not some other pointing device making noise.
Has anyone else encountered this problem, and if so, how did you resolve it?
Thanks - blurring and then going into the layer to delete the random lines of blur is getting tiresome - and it's not very precise either.
    Cheers,
    Terence.

  • Blur Tool in CS4 not working

Blue Tool is not working in CS4 have no idea why.
Maybe there is a setting that needs clearing? How to fix?

It's a complex program.  Take some time to learn it.  The tools do very specific things, but they are just that - tools.  You need to learn how to use them well for the program to deliver its value.  Photoshop is not a program you can learn to use overnight.
Making a selection then doing a gaussian blur does not blur the entire image.  Read what's written carefully, and if you don't understand something, look it up or ask here about it.  Someone will probably give step by step instructions:
    For example:
    1.  Activate the Polygonal Lasso tool in the Tools panel.
    2.  Set the Feather amount to a small value (0 or a few pixels) at the top of the Photoshop main window.
    3.  Click points all around what you want to blur.
    4.  Double click or return to the origin point to close the selection.
    5.  Choose Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur, and dial in the amount of blur you want.
Back to your original post - if you are not seeing screen updates with the Blur tool, it's possible your display driver is failing and you need to update it from the web site of the maker of your display card.

  • Blur Tool

Photoshop CS.

I have been having this problem with the blur tool in CS6 for a while also... Just to say (if you're still wondering) or for any others. After spending a long while reading through a lot of frustrating answers that didn't help me. I.e. 'it's just a very subtle tool' or the size of the image needs to be taken into account, "it's something about your video card', etc, etc... It may not be anything technical at all. (**I failed, so I'm not trying to insult anyone this applies to, just trying to help after not finding the answer myself and spending a lot of unnecessary time on what was a very simple fix.**)
Depending on how you think about it, the tool setting is counter intuitive:
THE SIMPLE ANSWER FOR DUMMIES >>> MAKE SURE THE TOOL HARDNESS IS SET TO ZERO

  • How do you change the color of the path the pen tool makes?

There must be some way to change the color of the path the pen tool makes from that grey color to something that will contrast with the image underneath. I found one thread about this from 2010 or so and the answer led to a dead link. This seems like it would be a very helpful feature that would be easy to implement. Someone please tell me in 2014, after a zillion version of photoshop have come out in the past 30 or so years, how do we do this? Thank in advance.

Why? When you zoom in too close sometimes it become too pixelated to see what's going on and the point on the pen become to close to each other. Why can't you change the path to a color so that it doesn't blend into the image you're trying to trace? Why is the unchangeable color one of the most likely colors to become invisible on most images? So frustrating!

  • Blur tool help

Hello everytime I use the Blur tool it will only blur when I click on it and not when I hold down the mouse as I go around the image. This only happens in Photoshop CC 2014. But when I use Photoshop Elements 12 it works fine in the past update I hoped it was fixed, but it will still do this, sometimes it will work normally that is when I hold the mouse down the blur line will go along the image fine without me having to keep clicking the mouse button over and over. What is wrong is it a setting I can fix this with? I have defaulted the brushes and it will still do it. I sometimes end up just using Elements 12 which isn't as good as CC 2014 to me.

I defaulted the setting so it would basically look the same.
    Meaning what exactly?

  • Help! Blur tool issues with Adobe CC/Windows 8/Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet

Hi everyone, would really appreciate your help with something frustrating. I have been using Adobe CC quite happily since it was released, but after upgrading to a faster desktop that runs Windows 8, for some reason the Blur tool is playing up. I've upgraded drivers and cleared caches but it keeps happening sporadically. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it wont. My pc isn't the fastest in the world (ie not video editing speeds) but is perfectly competent to run Photoshop; I've run the program on slower machines and am used to the lag that happens there, so this is something different.
What happens; the blur tool is slow, and inaccurate to the extent of being unusable. When I attempt to blur out a section, for example a section of background, it will instead blur out a totally different section of the photo, for example, the face of the subject.
I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet CTE 450; I have upgraded its drivers as well.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated; this is only a small thing but is slowly driving me mad! I don't use the blur tool constantly so it isn't preventing me from doing anything, but it is handy when it works and extremely irritating when it won't!
    Thanks in advance!!

Also adding; the same error happens when I use a mouse, which seems to indicate it isn't the tablet's fault.

  • Using Transform or Selection tools makes my non-background layers or whole document invisible.

I recently started having this problem in Photoshop CS6 where using the transform or selection tools makes all the layers other than my background layer disappear so I can't see what I'm selection or transforming. This happens randomly out of nowhere. I can be using those tools all day with no problem, and then out of nowhere it starts making things invisible. There doesn't seem to be any other programs running that would cause it (not that that should be an issue, my computer could easily run all my Adobe programs at once if I wanted it to), and the only thing that seems to fix it so far is restarting Photoshop. But that gets old really fast when I have to do it over and over again. I tried calling Adobe, but somehow they're always closed, even during their supposed hours of operation.

You can also try to disable the GPU accleration (hardware acceleration) completely. Usually it is the drivers to blame, but on some PC's I have noticed that disabling it completely provides better performance and a better experience than having it enabled. In my case, I lose some features that I do not use so it is not an issue for me.

    Hi there,
I'm sorry you're having problems with your software. The first step is to be sure you have all applicable updates. Secondly, you may need to reset your preferences.
This link has a number of steps that may help you deal with your issue:

I hope that following the instructions solve your problem, but if not, please don't hesitate to check in.

  • My Blur Tool is not working.

Ive reset all tools, and still no luck, I cannot retouch skin without the Blur... is there anything short of uninstalling and reinstalling I can do?
anyone that can help can reply to me personally at [email protected] please.

Brush over some things that are sharp to ensure the effect isn't just to subtle to see on skin.
Please post a screen grab showing the entire state of Photoshop at the moment it refuses to work.
While it sounds like you have many things set right, given the sheer number of modal things that you can accidentally change and leave set in Photoshop that would cause a tool to appear not to function, there's always the possibility you've still got something set wrong.  A screen grab would help folks here see what you're doing more clearly.
Also, what are the specific brush settings for the Blur Tool?  DO you have any of the dynamics turned on?
Are you working on the appropriate layer?  Have the layer pixels selected, and not the mask?
    Got something selected elsewhere?
Implied here is that the Blur Tool does work - I just tested it.  I also don't recall anyone else here on the forum in recent history claim the Blur Tool doesn't function.

  • Blur Tool Problem

I am using Photoshop CS6 on Windows 8.  I can do photo editing, etc in Photoshop,
but when I am using the blur tool to blur the background,  Photoshop stops working
and closes down.  I open back up.. work on the blur again, little and save, do little more
and save but soon, it stops working again and closes down.
What is causing he program to just stop working and close down??
So far everything else seems to be working fine witht he program..
    thanks

  • Blur tool results seen only in palatte bin

    I am new at Photoshop.
    I have Elements 7, Windows 7.
When working with the blur tool, I see no change to my photograph.  However I do see changes on the layer thumbnail in the palatte bin.  What am I missing?  It worked for a previous photo, but not with a new one I opened up.

    HistoricalNutrition,
The blur tool is generally ineffective, as I see it.
If you need to blur the background, yet keep the foreground in focus, try the following:
    Open picture file
    Duplicate background layer
Apply Gaussian blur to the background copy layer. This will blur everything. Not to worry, we'll fix it.
Place a levels adjustment layer between the background and background copy layers.
Clip the background copy layer and the adjustment layer - Layer>create clipping mask
Left click the mask (the white rectangle)
Use a black brush to bring the foreground back into focus. If you go too far, correct with a white brush

In this example, I have masked the blurred bricks in order to allow the "sharp" bricks to show.
