Photoshop complete list of dependant file extension

Is there a Photo directory for all the dependant file extensions assoicated with preset, curves, actions, save for the web, work spaces, type and paragraph styles etc, etc.

Hi Kirby,
It would be very useful, yes, but I do not know of any official document.
But from experimenting I found, that the preferences file contains
all settings you set from the Preferences panel (surprise, surprise)
the "recent directory" lists
the path to your Aperture library
the layout of the GUI
I always keep the original preferences file for reference, when I need to delete it. You can read the preferences file with Xcode, a free download from the AppStore and check the older settings.
Regards
Léonie
P.S. It is far easier to say what is not in the "Preferences" file: All settings that you find in "Your User Library > Application Support > Aperture", but you probably know all that

  • Could not complete your request because Photoshop Elements cannot recognize the file extension. (-25600)

im trying to add a water mark to multiple photos but I keep getting  Could not complete your request because Photoshop Elements cannot recognize the file extension. (-25600) error. how do I fix this?

If you open up editor then expert mode then you click file and the it's manage multiple or something like that. It will pull up a box asking you where you would like to get the photos from. I picked a folder where I just edited the skin tone and then saved it. I'm thinking it has something to do with the way the files save but I'm not sure how to get it to change. But after the box comes up you can add a water mark to all the photos in the folder. I found the video of how to do it on here.

  • Photoshop cs5 is not appending file extensions

in previous versions, photoshop appended to the file extension in the fiel save/save as dialog box.  it no longer does this and when you save a file it does not append the file extension to the file name, resulting in unknown fiel type.
    i am running windows 7 64-bit with photoshp cs5.
it does not make any since to have the option of appending the file extension if the program is not going to do it.

The operating system has no problems with the filenames ... it is Photoshop that is not handling the names correctly.
Just tried this out on my Windows 7 64 bit system, and I get the same results using Photoshop.
When I save a file in Photoshop CS5 64 bit with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the file is saved as 047. Crayon - Abstract without a file extension, no matter what document type I select in the drop-down.
In Word I get the expected result:
When I save a file in Word with the name 047. Crayon - Abstract the extension is automatically added (047. Crayon - Abstract.docx)

  • Photoshop doesn't save file extension

    I'm using PS cs5.1 64 bit and Bridge cs5 in Win7 Pro 64 bit.
When I "Save As", photoshop won't write the file extension unless I explicitly type it (i.e. i have to type "filename.psd" as opposed to just "filename") in the file name text box.
If I Save As the file without specifying the extension, bridge simply displays a blank page icon for the file, and if I double click it, I get the "don't know what application to use" dialog. If I select photoshop as the program to use, ps will open the file correctly.
However, even after I change the filename in bridge by adding the extension, bridge displays the PS icon, but won't preview the file (doesn't show a thumbnail).
If I want bridge to show a thumbnail, I have to re-open the file in PS, then Save As, remembering to explicitly specify the extension. THEN, Bridge will show a thumbnail.
How can I correct this? I've gone through the preferences dialog and have "save lowercase extension" checked, but this appears to be a preference for case of saved extension, not a specification that an extension should always be saved.
btw: I tried the regedit fix specified on other help forums, but this didn't help.
    Thanks.

I think I figured it out.
I was saving filenames which contain "." in the name (e.g. "BO.HG.M.psd").
When I saved the file with the name "BO_HG_M", photoshop appended the .psd extension for me, and bridge is happy.
Because of the application of the images, it's important that we use the "." format for the names, so I'll just live with it and try to remember to type the ".psd" on the end.

  • Is there a list of file extensions?

I'm just curious what *.epub and *.dmg and others are that I don't know having come from the W word community.

There are numerous web sites that list reems of file extensions and their associations - just google for "file extensions"
epub is an electronic publication, basically an ebook format.  It is the most common format for ebooks from Barnes and Nobel, Kobo and other ebook retailers (Amazon being the big exception, since they have their own proprietary ebook format). Note though that epub books can be DRM (i.e. digitally locked) encoded - for example, Apple's iBook epub files are DRM locked to Apple's own iBook reader.  B&N and Kobo ebooks are also DRM locked, but you can use Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) app to authorize them on non-B&N or non-Kobo readers.
dmg is a disc image file - typically used to bundle and compress applications for electronic distribution.  You download dmg files for apps from the App store, for example, double click to open them, run the installer or drag'n'drop the application into your Applications folder, then close and delete the dmg file (or archive it if you want to keep a backup).

  • Importing photos without a file extension name?

I am running Mac Tiger w/ 1.5gig ram. I am using 1.3.1 V Lightroom. I am trying to import 4000 or so .tif photos that I scanned about 8 years ago and did not save the file name as .tif. I am guessing that is why light room will not recognize them and tells me no photos are found when I navigate to the folder. I am hopping someone can tell me how to make this work without having to re-name or add .tif to all of these scans manually? If I can not do this through Lightroom, is there any way in Photoshop to add the .tif file extension automatically?
    Thanks,
    Cathy

Why not just rename them all? It would only take a second.
Oh...I don't know how to do it on a Mac, but it's cake on a PC so I assume it is on Mac as well.

  • Adobe install does not assiocate programs with file extensions

Adobe CS4 was installed then Adobe CS5.5 was installed, Adobe CS4 was then removed.  Now I have noticed that some of the workstations are having file association problems, specifically with Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
The file extensions .pst, .indd. (to name a few) are not associating with the appropriate programs. You can open these files while in the appropate programs, but I cannot double click on the files to open up the program. I've researched this issue and it seems that the following is happening:
    1. The progID file path for the program is still pointing to CS4
    2. The file extension has not been updated to reflect that it belongs to the appropriate program
    3. The following error comes up "Adobe Illustrator has detected a problem in the window registry which needs to be corrected for Illustrator to work properly. Would you like Illustrator to correct the problem now?
This has happened on 3 different workstations, the fix I found for error 1 is to dive into the registry and update the progID with Adobe CS5.5's new file path.
To fix Error 2 and 3 Adobe CS5.5 needed to be uninstalled, then a registry sweet of the unused extensions and the old registry entries using Ccleaner, then a reinstall of Adobe CS5.5.  After all of this everything is working perfectly.
Has anyone else had this issue? If so what were your solutions to these issues? Is there a patch or a hotfix or an update I can push out to multiple machines so I don't have to do this on a per machine instance?

You have to uninstall the current version of CS and then install the new version of CS in order to keep these file extensions from breaking. It's as simple as that, if you are having issues with Photoshop not showing up then it's due to the file path still pointing to the old version of Photoshop. You need to go into the registry in order to fix this.
    Go to the following:
    Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoshop\shell\open\command
Than change it to the current file path for CS5.5 and that should enable Photoshop to show up in the open with menu in windows.
    For example:
This is the old file path in the registry
    Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\photoshop.exe
This is what it should be changed to in order for open with to work
    Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5.1\photoshop.exe
After you do this it should work, but this is kind of a bandaid in order to get photoshop to work in windows open with menu

  • Why isn't .jfif not listed in the JPEG file extensions (.jpg, .jpeg, .jpe) Photoshop Elements 12

    Problem:  Corrupt JEPG files.
    Software:  Adobe Photoshop Elements 12
Story: On my website I have the option to sell files as instant downloads.  I upload JEPG 300dpi images of my artwork for people to purchase is a download.  I have done this on Etsy for several years without a problem.
The problem began when I setup a website using Weebly, an online build your own website company.  I upload the same files I have used in the past, but when I do a test purchase and download my file it is corrupt.  I get an error message in Photoshop Elements that the file is corrupt or missing information.  If I let Photoshop open the file, the file it is only half there or lines through the image.
I have been working with a Weebly tech to solve the problem.  I sent him the file I wanted to upload.  He opened the file on his computer and saved it.  Then uploaded to my site, I downloaded it and the file was fine a perfectly clear 300 pdi JPEG file.  We were confused.  After a few more tests he mentioned he did not have Photoshop and was using Microsoft Paint (light bulb) to open and save the files. His files worked, mine did not.
So I tried opening my files in Paint and saving them in that JEPG format and they work.  The only difference i can see between Paints JEPG save option and Photoshops Save Function is that Paint includes the .jfif extension.
Question:  Should this make a difference?  if so can I add the file extention to Photoshop's list of file types that I can save?
    Thanks
    Mark

Thank you I will check it out.  I am not sure what information is attached to picture files, but the same file saved in Microsoft Paint works in my situation and the Photoshop file will not. The only difference is Paint supports.jfif and photoshop does not.  I might want to go the other way jpg to jififs. or save with to jepg with software that supports jfifs.

  • What file extension should I see after doing a complete PSE backup?

I repetedly have had problems getting back a catalog after getting a new computer, getting an additional hard drive, etc.  So...when I do a complete back up, what file name extension should I see, so that I am POSITIVE that I can get my catalog back later, with all tags? Or is that too much to expect?
    (1) For instance, after doing a complete backup recently, I only see a "My Catalog.psb" file in the folder.  When I go to get the file loaded back into my new PSE 9 program (no matter if I "restore" or "convert" or whatever) from my old PSE 7, PSE will only look for a .tly file, so I  can't even choose that .psb file.  Also, my tags are usually nested within subcategories.  Can I get those nests back, too?
    (2)  I have given up and re-imported all of my photos, which at least brings in a list of tags that are on each photo.  But,I have to rebuild all the subcategories and tags underneath those subcategories.  UGH.
So, what do I look for to make sure I have a correct backup file, and will I get everything back like I see it?  Or will it look different? Please post easy instructions - I am not an expert with PSE (because if I was, I wouldn't still be having the same problems year after year when I update PSE).

Done!!  It took lots of effort, and lots of trial and error, but I figured
out what I had been doing wrong...I had been confusing CATALOG with a FULL
BACKUP.  To me, they were one and same but now I know they aren't.   Who
    knew?
For those who read this thread in the future who only convert a catalog once
every two or three years, like me (which means it is not very easy to
remember what to do) here's what I found out when I was trying to load a
PSE7 catalog into my new PSE9 program. (Please correct me if I am wrong
    about anything.)
    1)  Before you do anything, I suggest that you make a Full Backup of the
catalog of  the older PSE program (the catalog you will soon import into to
the newer PSE program) .  This will make it easier on you, rather than
    converting several incremental backups.
    2)  Open up the newest version of your PSE, holding down the Shift key as
the Elements Organizer opens up.  This will open up the Elements Catalog
    Manager.
    3)  In the Catalog Manager go to "Convert" (top right corner)
...You may be lucky and automatically see the catalog you used in your older
program listed here.  If so, skip to #8.
I wasn't so lucky, so I had to do the following...
    4)  Click on "Find More Catalogs".
    5)  Navigate to the Adobe Photoshop Elements folder (usually located at
    C/Program Data/Adobe/Photoshop Elements),
    6)  Now here's the important part:
...Double click on the folder you see with the NAME OF THE CATALOG YOU WISH
TO IMPORT (the catalog used in your older program).  When you do this, it
will find your most up to date backup.
...Do not click on the folder that has your latest backup in it (it won't
do anything no matter how much you try). THE BACKUP IS NOT YOUR CATALOG.  To
me it seemed logical that it was, but to the Photoshop Elements program it
was not...how was I to know?
    7)  After you double click on the folder with the name of the catalog you
wish to import, you will see a line pop into the "Convert Catalog" box.
    8)  Highlight the line with the name of your older catalog in the "Convert
Catalog" box, and click on "Convert" at the bottom of that box. Name your
new catalog. Your tags, nesting, and photos should now all import into your
    newer version of Photoshop Elements.
Finally...success for me!  Thank you SO MUCH for all of your help.  It
steered me in the right direction, and taught me a few new tricks as I
researched my problem.  I really appreciate your help!
Note to Adobe Help Manual Writers:
If only someone had written clearer directions on how to do this, I might
have saved several days of anguish.  Please do not assume we know and
understand your lingo.  Please do not assume that things will automatically
load. Tell us what to do if they don't...AND what to do if our navigation
to what we think is the right place doesn't work.  *A couple of sentences
like this would have helped tremendously: "A catalog is not a backup.  When
you navigate, make sure you are clicking on a catalog folder with the name
of the catalog you wish to convert.  Don't click on a backup folder because
that won't mean anything to the program."  *Please assume we will make
mistakes, and when you see a pattern of people making the same mistake
(having trouble importing catalogs, for instance), use that information to
    write better directions.

  • Photoshop cannot recognize the file extension

I'm trying to batch convert BMP files to JPG. One file works fine, as I build the Action. But when I run the batch, I get the error:
    File: "/Users/bryan/7D FTP/Streak in 7D/Pyracantha 2/Strips - 2 wide/"
Error: Could not complete your request because Photoshop cannot recognize the file extension. (-25600)
I see that the file in question is a directory, not a file, but everything was set up correctly to override "open" commands etc.
    Any ideas?

The file names are an image sequence, Strip0002.bmp, Strip0002.bmp, etc.
But the file name never appears in the error message, only the path.
I tried moving the folders to the desktop in case the filename and path was too long, but it had no effect. The Batch Action always does the first file without error and fails on the second, as if it has remembered the output type JPG and is then confused by the input type BMP.

  • Could not complete your request the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop.

  • Photoshop cs6  .psd file extension

Hello,  if you create an image and it has a .psd file extension.  Do you have to download software to view the .psd file extension.  Or can if easily be converted to a .jpeg.  On my mac I can see the image.  At work a windows machine it's asking me to find a program that can view a .psd.  I was hoping to convert it to something that will open easily.   Thanks!

Here is what I did.  I took a picture from the internet and created a new file in photoshop.  Then I added some layers for background, and text.  Now, the image has 4 layers.  It's basically a banner for a title of a page.  It has a .psd format.  I emailed the photo to myself here at work.  I can not open the file.  What started this is:  If I use this new .psd file I have created and used it in dreamweaver.  When someone opens the webpage will that .psd file open for them to see the image?  This is why I have been thinking that I need to convert it to a different format.  I'm Sorry!  I hope this clears up what I am trying to do.  Thanks!

I downloaded it and looked at it.  Even Graphic Converter can't recover any pixels or meaningful data, just some general information:
In my experience, if GraphicConverter can't open it, nothing will.
    Your file is toast  Sorry.
