Photoshop crashes, unable to perform Software Update, general slowness.
I am writing on behalf of a colleague at work.
He is using a brand new iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It is running Mac OS X 10.5.5 and he is trying to update to 10.5.6 to correct some problems he's been encountering.
He has been experiencing repeated crashes with Adobe Photoshop and Mozilla Firefox, as well as general slowness. The biggest problem happens when trying to perform a Software Update.
"The installer encountered an unknown error that failed the install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
The Mac then freezes and has to be force shut down. After that it sometimes will not start again either.
We have run a permissions verify and repair, and errors were corrected but the problem continues. We also ran a disk verify and it found errors, but when we tried to correct the errors it said that there were no errors.
A memory test in the Apple Hardware Test showed no errors either. We are running an hour-long test now.
We suspect there may be a hardware problem. Could anybody please advise on any other things we could try?
The computer answered this question for us. Today it will not boot.
It is going to be serviced, I suspect a logic board problem.

I can not perform software updates or download any programs. They appear in the download box as images that are "not recognized". I thought maybe my antivirus software was setting up a firewall, but I have disabled it, so that's not the case. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?
If the downloads are gone, it's possible that Windows is removing the downloads based on security policies set in IE. I realize that sounds strange, but it's related to Firefox's feature of submitting downloads to your virus scanner and marking them as having come from the internet.
To test this theory, you could try disabling the scan feature. I assume you have good "real time" antivirus protection which checks every file saved to your hard drive. (If not, you really should get that, and you can use Microsoft's free [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials Microsoft Security Essentials] for now until you have time to review all the available choices.)
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the filter box, type or paste '''scan''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click '''browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone''' to toggle its value.
Firefox now should ignore Windows' download security. Does it change how Windows handles the file? -
How to Manually Perform software Updates and tips for making Macbook better
Hi. So recently my internet was really slow. I figured the problem out and now is working well. Although the youtube site does not allow me to view entire videos.
Well...i was told that since my macbook is turned off at night, it cant perform software updates between 3am-6am...so how can i do these manually? or how can i change the update time to sometime in the evening?
I heard these software updates are suppose to make the macbook run and perform better. what other things can i do to accomplish that?
(Laymans terms, im new to the mac world)Select Software Update from the Apple menu. Or download the standalone updaters from Apple's download site - http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/. Or simply set the Check for Updates option in Software Update to whatever frequency you prefer. SU will notify you when updates are available.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values. -
Unable to do Software update, access iTunes, use widgets on dash and upload
*_Here is the problem:_*
1. Unable to use Software Update. When I try I get: "+A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again+" This is despite being connected to the internet and getting most things done.
2. Widgets which require data retrieval are not working. Notably weather and currency convertor.
3. iTunes cannot connect to the store. Tells me to check my network (which, if I do, I am told is fine, thanks)
4. Cannot view images (such as car rental vouchers) which are meant to display in email. In fact- the entire email disappeared before my eyes! But CAN, luckily, view on the server so I KNOW it is not just that the image is "spam" etc.
5. First thing on this list which made me wary- I cannot upload to YouTube, it times out ("unknown error" but timing out is mentioned) and this is using Firefox 3.8.3.
6. Safari will not load at all- it just keeps trying to load.
7. Displaying pages is slower than usual and downloading Onyx took ages and displayed no data regarding the file size or length of download time.
*_What I know:_*
1. I didn't update the last two times I was prompted because I was too busy to have it shut down on me and restart, etc.
2. I also had a go at trying to set up a web proxy and failed miserably. Though I actually changed the settings on another network to the one I am using I am so not network-literate that I fear that I have somehow done this to myself.
*_What I have tried:_*
1. safe starts, restarts,
2. deleting the preferences pertaining to Software Update from the various locations,
3. repaired permissions and-
4. thought of (I cannot afford to lose the data and haven't the time to back up just now- as per usual, this comes at the WORST time as I am on standby to fly out of the country due to VERY heavy and sad family affairs and need access to the files on the computer even if I cannot fully use the internet- just too many people/GB Pounds riding on this) using Onyx to try to "fix" this.
I have read up on others getting similar issues but am not certain that everyone has ALL the symptoms I am seeing (and then they may not be busy trying all these things on the one day and may not KNOW it is affected as well!). And I have tried each and every cure offered to these people. No good. When you are going to be connecting to different networks that require different settings--such as proxies--you must establish different Locations in your Network System Preferences. If you're going to be connecting at college, you may want to set up a location called "College" and set the proxy settings so you can use it there. Then, when you want to go online at school, go to System Preferences -> Network and change your location to College. Then when you get home, change your settings back to "Automatic" or whatever you've named your home location.
Your Mac doesn't differentiate between networks it's connected to in order to automatically apply different settings. It relies on you to do that through the Locations set-up.
Anyway, glad it's working for you, and thanks for the star! -
My MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.3 cannot perform software update
My MacBook Pro OS X 10.5.3 cannot perform software update. Installation freezes at "configuring installation" stage. I have tried installing OS X 10.5.4, 10.5.6, and 10.5.8 combos. Disk utility says my HD is OK. ???????
Greetings,
If you haven't done so already, backup all your important data: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
Unplug any peripherals (printers, hard drives, cameras etc.) from the computer leaving only the power cord.
Try repairing disk permissions if you haven't already: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1452
Put your computer into Safe Boot: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 -- STOP -- Check your available hard drive space while in Safe Boot. If you do not have at least 10 GB free (and really more is better) then you need to free up some space (copy movies off to an external drive, delete the 30 GB of music you never listen to, etc.) If you have 10 or more GB available on disk proceed.
Install the Mac OS X 10.5.8 combo update while still in Safe Boot.
If you still can't install try reseting the PRAM (very occasionally disk cacheing issues can prevent large installations for succeeding): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If the issue persists at this point and you have plenty of free hard drive space then your next step would be an Archive and Install: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1710 -- You want a backup for safekeeping before you do this (see step 1)
Hope that helps. -

HT4623 I am unable to see software update option in setting- general iPhone 3gs
I am unable to update my iPhone 3gs , there is no option of software update in setting->general.
You need to update it from iTunes on a computer to get that option. As the article itself states, that's available in iOS 5 and later, but the device is running iOS 3.

Crashes ever since latest software update
Ever since I downloaded and installed the latest Apple software updates to my computer (Mac OS X 10.4.9 if I remember correctly, and whatever are the most recent updates to iTunes, QuickTime, and Backup), I've been unable to open Mail. Every time I try to launch it, it crashes and gives me the message "The application Mail quit unexpectedly." The only things I've changed in my computer since the last time I was able to use Mail have been those software updates. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone suggest ways I can fix it?
Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the update using the combo installer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
Troubleshooting installation and software updates
Installing software updates
<hr>
The above may or may not solve the problem, but will allow us to at least troubleshoot it properly. Post back with your observations when done. In particular, does Mail crash immediately or when it starts to download messages.
If Mail crashes immediately upon start up, the cause could be a troublesome message that Mail tries to load every time you open it. Try launching Mail holding the Shift key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
If Mail crashes when it starts to download new mail, try the following to check whether the junk filter could have a bearing on it and post back with your observations:
1. Either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down your Internet connection and open Mail afterwards.
2. Go to Preferences > Junk Mail and disable junk mail filtering.
3. Go online again. -
Yesterday, spotify crashed when I tried to open it. It was the middle of the day, I had just gone woken the computer up. NOthing I could tell changed previous except for having paid for Spotify Premium. Then my itunes crashed upon starting, as did iphoto library, software update and even the install program crashed. I backed up everyhting on an external hd, freed up a good amount of space, and tried to reinstal with the disks the macbook pro came with. Oh, I have the 13" macbook pro running mac osx v10.6.8 , I bought it around October last year if that makes a difference. So, while trying to initiate the install program to reinstal the operating system, the instal program itself crashes. Ive run out of ideas, Ive been looking online but haven't found anything, but I also may be looking in the wrong places. This is the text from the crash report that came up when I tried to run software update:

Hello,
Please can someone help me. I recently performed a software update on my Blackberry Torch 9810 to version 7.1.0. (Bundle 1149). The update was successful, however since performing the update all audio on my phone has stopped working, in that ringtones, alarms, message notifiers have ceased to work. I can make calls and can hear people on the other end of the phone, my handset also still vibrates, it has just lost all audio output.
My phone's profile is set to 'normal' and I do not have the 'silent' or 'all alerts off' functions selected. I also have not dropped or damaged my phone and it has not received any water damage.
I've tried restarting my handset on several occasions and have performed battery pulls/removing and replacing the battery and still no joy!
I have tried to downgrade my software to the previous version, however my handset does not allow a downgrade function.
Please, please can someone help, as I am at a total loss as to what to do?!?!?
Many thanks in advance,
EmmaTake a look at the following.....

After show other versions, you can downgrade if you see the earlier version. Or, you may want to just reinstall the latest version.
It sounds like you did the update OTA on the BlackBerry handset. That is generally a bad idea right now. Certainly it will improve in the future, but nowadays many people have troubles.

My iphone has crashed since the last software update
I have an iphone 2g I think, is there a way to tell?
But anyway it was working fine before I updated it with the lastest iphone software update and now the iphone has completely crashed. I connected it with the USB cable and it said Apple mobile device (recovery mode) tries to install the hardware and doesn't. So I unplug the iphone and try again and the same thing happens. Third time, the computer doesn't even recognize there is anything connected. On the screen of my iphone is a picture of the USB cable and the itunes logo telling me to connect but I can't.
I have tried many things to get it working, like download the driver, check if the USB apple connection is there. And from what I can see its all there but it still doesn't recognize my iphone or connection.
Any ideas? I have only had this iphone for a few months and can't understand how a apple software update can ultimately crash there products.
I need any help. Many thanks.Copied from your previous post.
You are right the Iphone is locked into the carrier softbank from Japan and its not the 3g model its the one before it, I am not sure what model.
If your iPhone is not the 3G model - it is the one before that, this means your iPhone is the first generation iPhone or the original iPhone, which WAS NOT sold officially by Apple in Japan. The first generation iPhone was sold officially by Apple in the U.S. as carrier locked with AT&T, in the UK as carrier locked with O2, in Germany as carrier locked with T-Mobile, and in France as carrier locked with Orange and as officially unlocked by Orange. The ONLY country where the first generation was sold as officially unlocked was in France, which is required by French law.
The original iPhone - the one before the 3G was not sold by Apple in Japan directly or through Softbank.
Did you purchase your iPhone from Softbank or from an Apple store in Japan ? If so, this would also mean your iPhone is carrier locked with Softbank since the iPhone is sold in Japan officially as carrier locked with Softbank only, and this would be the 3G or 3GS, not the original iPhone. This would also mean you are roaming internationally with Softbank with your iPhone in China. If you are using a SIM card from a carrier in China with your iPhone, your iPhone has been hacked to be unlocked unless you purchased your iPhone from an unofficial source in Japan which was sold originally as new officially in France as officially unlocked by the carrier Orange in France.
Is your iPhone is carrier locked with Softbank in Japan, are you paying Softbank international roaming fees while using your iPhone in China? -
Has anyone had crashes during OS X software updates?
Recently, I've updated my MacBookPro to OSX 10.7 . After a few weeks, the software update program notified me that I had an install pending (security updates, JAVA update and 1 more I think). I dutifully downloaded the updates and Software Update told me that I had to restart the computer. So I did. The computer restarted and began with the "Installing Updates" message and progress bar. Part way through the install, the process hung. An hour later it was still at the same place. Had to leave so shut down. Now can't the computer to start normally. Attached it to home computer via Target Disk mode and used disk utility, but still no luck.
Then today I was reconnecting a old iMac running OSX 10.5 to my home network. All started up normally, I was again notified by software update to install the OS Security update and JAVA updates. After the download and the restart, the install progress bar started up. 1/4 of the way through the entire process hung again! Now this iMac is also unable to start!
So 2 of 3 computers are now out of commission because of installing updates that did not install properly. How very very frustrating. I have now experienced this twice. Has anyone else out there had this issue? Any recommendations? Because it seems that no one knows anything about how to fix this issue except to wipe the disks, reinstall the OS and lose all the data. Help!
HJO
PS Now I'm trying to connect the laptop to my last working computer via target disk mode to copy off the document files, and the transfer is hanging up somewhere in the Firewire system. I got a vew files over but it has taken hours and hours. Aaaarrrrgggghhhh.Well don't update your last computer.
I suspect there is a problem with your router/home network, perhaps it was compromised or the router is failing.
Some older routers have a file size download limit, I think it was old Rogers routers if I recall, I've seen this problem here before, it just cuts off after a certain limit.
So here you go updating and the file download is not complete and bricks your machine.
also 10.5 is outdated and insecure, you need to get the files off that machine and call Apple for the 10.6.3 white retail disks if it's a Intel Mac.
I would consider all your machines and network compromised and requiring full resets of everything to leave no stone unturned.
I would get a new router, make it super secure first apply it's firmware updates and very secure WiFi (WPA2 AES), test the Internet connection and your ISP speeds are whay your paying for.
Then data recovery on each machine, then wipe and install OS X (10.6.8 at least) on each and then use ClamXav to scan the possibly infected files and vet them before returning to the cleaned machines.
Don't use any sort of migration or TimeMachine business, just bare bones files that don't have executable code.
It's ok, all this can be fixed. All files recovered and everything back to normal.
Break the job up and tackle each piece, or if your not willing, call in a local PC/Mac specialist, they will fix you right up.

Always suffer "connection reset by peer" while performing software update
Hi all,
I just bought a brand new macbook air. The first thing I do for this laptop is to perform the software update. It suffered me for a long time that I always encounter the error message
"Connection reset by peer The Installer package has been moved to the Trash. To try again, open the package from the Finder"
For some update that the file larger than 10Mbytes, the error is very easy to occur. I will be ever lucky that I could download the update package for larger update file.
I can make sure that my network to wireless route is well as I could download 500Mbytes file manually from internet without any problem. Actually, I had downloaded the mac X OS 10.5.4 package manually and upgrade the system from 10.5.2 to 10.5.4 as it is almost impossible for me use "software update" to download about 500Mbytes without "connection reset by peer" problem.
Any input is appreciate.
Thanks.I have the exact same problem , can any one please help with this

Unable to install software update August 2014, "Unexpected error occurred."
PLEASE HELP!
What I am trying to do: Install the latest update on my computer. 1) Because it's an update. 2) Because I need, and currently cannot, access the iCloud feature in my system preferences.
What I have recently done to my computer:
I am currently uploading all my data into the Cloud.
I purchased iTunes Match and Google Drive. Google Drive caused problems on my computer, so I deleted it. It was causing it to crash. It hasn't crashed since, but now runs more slowly.
iTunes Match is taking forever, but seems to be working.;:
Something else I've noticed with iTunes, every time I open the application now, it puts these files onto my desktop screen: iTunes Media folder, iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library.xml, Album Artwork folder, iTunes Library Extras.itdb and iTunes Library Genius.itdb.
Like I said, PLEASE HELP!!!!
