Photoshop CS freezes before it is open

Question

This program is used daily in our museum to store and print photographs. Suddenly it will not open. I used it earlier today and a colleague loaded a couple of photos from a flash drive. She might have pushed a wrong button or two.
But now it starts to open. It gets as far as "Reading Text Global Resources...Done and then it stops. The tool box is in the upper left and grey. No other programs are running. PS is using 50% of CPU according to the task manager. 48,456K That same number comes up every time I try to load the program.
Any ideas?

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.

You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.
However a bad font may be causing this. Were any new fonts installed recently? (Even by another progrm like MS Word?)
