Photoshop CS2 freezes, deletes saved data upon restart

I have had CS2 on my computer for the past 4 years. Starting 2 weeks ago I'd be in the middle of sketching a page for a comic and the program would freeze. No amount of wait time would un-freeze it, and when I restarted the program the last 5 minutes of work would no longer be present (I've timed it) regardless of how many times I've saved the document within those 5 minutes.
It doesn't do it continuously. Sometimes it will work for an hour or so. Just this morning it froze 4 times in 3 minutes. It ONLY does it when I am inking or sketching pages with either the default round hard brush or a custom inking brush. It hardly ever freezes if I'm actually painting the page. I have no idea why. I've tried painting with the same brushes that I ink with and rarely get a problem. But when I use them to ink, it dies.
I have CS2 on A Dell desktop. I run Windows XP on said computer.
I also have not had internet access to the computer for almost a year now, but this problem is very recent so I'm not sure it matters.
If anyone could help at all, I'd be very grateful.
~madeoftin~

I'd start by resetting the photoshop preferences:

  • Photoshop CS2 freezing and "Not Responding"

I've had Photoshop CS2 running on the same computer and OS (Vista) since around the time it came out, and it's always worked fine for me.
A week or so ago Photoshop began to freeze continuously, and when it freezes I click on it and it goes into its "Not Responding" phase where the screen whites out. Sometimes it prompts me to close the program. I usually wait until it unfreezes (around 30 seconds) but if I open another window to pass the time, I can't click directly back into Photoshop, I have to minimize the other windows I was using to get to it, and it will not respond the first few seconds when I open the window or the program itself. Sometimes I can get a minute or so of work done, but that's usually it.
I've tried uninstalling the program then reinstalling many times, deleting the preference files with Ctrl+Alt+Del, etc. I have plenty of memory left on my computer. It's only photoshop that does this, ImageReady works fine.
Is there anything else I can try to fix it?

Please allow me to suggest a way to help determine if you have hardware problems...
    Try this:
    1.  Click your Start button and type Event Viewer in the search box.  When Event Viewer comes up, click it.
    2.  Look in the Windows System log (or Administrative Events) for errors.  If you are seeing, for example, recoverable disk errors, they will be logged.
    3.  Are you seeing any actual crashes of Photoshop?  If so, look in the Application log for more information on these events, especially for the "Faulting Module" information.
    Also:
    A.  Have you changed / installed any 3rd party software / plug-ins since it worked well?
    B.  Has your maximum RAM allocation for Photoshop changed?  What value have you set in Edit - Preferences - Performance, and what is your total RAM in your system?

My guess is that your Hard Drive and System need attention.
How long is it since you Repaired Permissions; ran Cocktail; and, most importantly, ran DiskWarrior?

  • Photoshop CS2 Quits on Saving to LAN in OSX 10.4.6

We use Photoshop CS2 and OSX 10.4.6 on 3 G5's and 1 G4. On saving a psd to LAN or desktop, Photoshop quits.
We also have 1 mac G5 on OSX 10.4.3 and 1 mac G4 on OSX 10.4.3 both using Photoshop CS2 and they both work fine.
Is this a problem with OSX 10.4.6? It only seems to have happened since the macs were updated to OSX 10.4.6
Anyone out there got any ideas? I've tried completely re-installing CS suite and also repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility but this makes no difference.
Also tried creating a new user but problem still exists.

    Hi All,
    Thanks for all your help.
Via various sources I've got the problem solved by replacing the 3 following folders from a mac with OSX 10.4.3
    System/library/filesystems/APPLESHARE
    System/library/frameworks/APPLESHARECLIENT.FRAMEWORK
    System/library/frameworks/APPLESHARECLIENTCORE.FRAMEWORK
Shut down and re-start then repair disk permissions.
Shut down and re-start and the problem should be solved.
You do need to have administrator permissions to be able to do this.
It appears that Apple have tinkered with the appleshare settings in the new release.

  • Photoshop CS4 "Freezes" when saving as a JPEG

I have been using Photoshop CS4 with SnowLeopard and my MacPro for months now without a problem. I save multiple images everyday, often as JPEGs for the Web. But today, out of the blue with nothing changing (no new updates, or plugins), Photoshop "locks up" when saving a JPEG. I can still move the curser arrow, but everything is dead and the file did not save. I have to hit ESC just to get PS back online. I can save other file types, no problem.
Has anyone experienced this? Any help or solutions? I have the latest version of PS CS4.
(Note: If I go under Save for Web & Devices I can save it as a JPEG, but seems like an less than timely run-around)

I have not experienced that problem, but with all unexplainable Photoshop-problems You might try trashing the prefs (after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences You’ve changed) by pressing command-alt-shift on starting the program or starting from a new user-account.
System Maintenance (repairing permissions, purging PRAM, running cron-scripts, etc.) might also be beneficial.

  • Illustrator and Photoshop CS2 freeze up when placing objects.

When I try to place an object, in both CS2 Illustrator and Photoshop, the software freezes and must be restarted. Also when I click on the top of the window that a document is opened in, the document disappears from the screen. It is technically still open, but I can't retrieve it by scrolling. The window is literally off the screen, unable to be reached. I've been having problems with this software since I got it, is there a chance that there is a bug of sorts messing with me in the software?
This is very annoying, I hope there is a solution for it. I end up losing 75% of my work because I have to tip-toe around the software so much.
    Thanks,

  • Photoshop CS2 freezes on initializing (solved)

So, I just spent a lot of heartache (read: reinstalling Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger multiple times) to try and solve this error:
Photoshop CS to will show the splash screen (splashscreen ?) when I click the executable, but the splash scren just sits at Initializing .
After searching this forum and finding nothing, I found the answer at macosxhints.com : http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=77648 .
The answer: repair disk permissions, reboot, and start up photoshop again ( Applications > Utilities > Disk Utilitiy > Select Disk > Repair Permissions).
Anyhow, I thought I'd post the answer here for the next lost soul who can't seem to find the answer.
    Thanks!

  • Photoshop CS4 Freezes when Saving

I have been designing some stuff in photoshop CS4. It has worked fine, just like normal. I finished my project and attempted to save. I proceeded to the file tab, then save. Noting came up, but my cursor changed to the loading sign (One note, I had just updated to OSX Mavericks, it worked fine on Mountain Lion).  Nothing has happened, and I had to Force Quit photohsop. I am looking for a way to resolve this problem so I can continue to use Photoshop. I have tried some of the other adobe products, and they have worked fine, only photoshop has been affected.

  • 10.4.6 and Photoshop CS2

I have found that I am not alone in my finding that Photoshop CS2 crashes when saving files opened from remote volumes. A workaround has been to "downgrade" the appleshare client software to 10.4.5 .. I guess my question is, will apple be addressing this "real" issue with a patch of some sort? And yes, I know how to drag files to my local drive and then drag them back, but theorectically I shouldn't have to if previous versions worked without fail??? I also know I've mentioned an Adobe product...but the culprit seems to be the OS here. BTW: Adobe won't support remote volumes/networks connections. Pardon my frustration, but when trying to upgrade 9 boxes in my shop (OS, and applications) and running into the inevitable snags really chaps me! I waste so much time trying to make everything work correctly only to have to undo what I did to get any workflow.
    How's everyone else doing? thanks

thanks guys, for the insights...I am inclined to agree with you regarding development. Mean time, Jim...can you tell me more of your settings? If things are working for you, maybe they can for me as well without having to replace resource files from an old OS. What kind of volume are you pulling from or writing to?

  • Photoshop CS2 JPEG

    Hi,
When saving JPEG files from photoshop CS2, they are saved as "Photoshop JPEG Files". how do i stop this as the it wont allow me to attach these types of JPEGs onto emails. All other JPEG files will attach fine, just whenever i try to attach one that has been edited in Photochop CS2.
    Cheers!

Strange - I use CS3 now, but CS2 is still on my machine. I opened a CMYK file with CS2, changed it to RGB then re-saved as JPEG on the desktop and emailed it to myself with no problem.
It's only "Get Info" that specifies it as "Adobe Photoshop JPEG file":there doesn't seem to be anything in Photoshop which specifies "Photoshop JPEG" as opposed to standard JPEG.
If you are still having problems, try Lemkesoft's Graphic Converter shareware. It's really superb with odd format files etc., and the full price is comparative peanuts.

  • Photoshop CS2 cursor freezes

Since I updated to OSX10.4.3, some brushes in Photoshop CS2 cause an application freeze, with the rainbow beachball and "Application not responding" in the dock. The brush cursor still moves and becomes the cursor for everything else running, including the Finder. Adobe's forum shows others with this problem but it has happened for me only since 10.4.3 update. It seems to occur with Scatter brushes more often and happens with either the mouse or a Wacom tablet. I am saving more often since I lost 1+ hour's work when the cursor went AWOL. Photoshop has always been nearly bulletproof until now. I never had brush cursor problems before 10.4.3.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Even if not in use, is the Wacom tablet still connected during these cursor acts? What if the tablet is removed?

  • Photoshop CS2 date of birth loop

    date of birth loop
Hi, I am trying to install photoshop CS2 on a windows machine and understand that because the server authentication no longer works I have to download a different version, but I cannot because the page to access this version asks me for my date of birth every 5 seconds in a loop.  How can I get past this?  I have updated account details in Adobe separately and deleted cookies, all without effect. thanks

    you're welcome.
p.s when using the adobe forums, please mark helpful/correct responses, if there are any.

  • I did a clear data and reset on my ipod touch and upon restart it is frozen. How do I fix it?

I did a clear data and reset on my ipod touch and upon restart it is frozen. How do I fix it? I have already done the ten second hold restart with the top button and bottom button, but it still freezes. What should I do?

If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely.  Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again.

How/where do I change the default for File>Open With>Photoshop?  i haven't had Photoshop CS2 installed since the first CC 2014 version, and it was working fine until this last update last month.

DeneseLewis have you tried removing and reinstall Bridge CC?  You can find more details regarding the install and uninstall process at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.
