Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 - Launch hangs on Registration Screen, All menu items grayed out

I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS3 10.0.1.
When launching, the window labeled "Adobe Design Suite Premium CS3" opens - it's only filled with white, and no text or graphics (I think it's usually the window asking me if I want to register, which always comes up when I launch the program (rather annoying in itself).  However, now it seems that the launch gets "hung" on this window, as, even the the program starts, all the menus are grayed out, and I can't open any files or do anything.  Also, the window mentioned above only has the yellow "minimize" button available in the top left corner, so I can't close it or otherwise get rid of it.  Since even the Quit function is grayed out, I have to quit the program with a force quit.  Also, this same thing happens in my other CS3 programs (In Design) as well.
I tried trashing the photoshop plist file (com.adobe.photoshop.plist) and also the com.adobe.118.registration file, which had no effect.
Any advice on how I can fix this?
Thanks!

Hopefully this solution will work for you:

  • Photoshop CS3 10.0.1 launch hangs while Initializing menus

Can anyone please help me? Everything was fine yesterday, then today CS3 blew up. When I click to launch Photoshop CS3 Extended the application panel displays and starts listing what it's loading. Every time it reaches "Initializing menus..." the app stops responding.
I've already performed a CS3 uninstall and then reinstall and then installed the patches, but the problem persists.
Also, my Illustrator CS3 files will not longer open. The application becomes unresponsive. Illustrator will launch but will not open files. Problem was the same before I did the uninstall and reinstall of CS3. Problem still persists.
This morning I had to repair my HD with Apple's Disk Utility. These problems with Photoshop and Illustrator were occurring before I repaired the disk--thought that might cure the problem.
    I'm using a PowerMac G5 dual 2 Ghz processor
    Mac OS X 10.5.2
    6 GB of RAM
    Any ideas on solutions?

Hi - just had the same problem and found it was related to my printer...
    1. Run CS3 until it hangs (during Initializing Menus stage).
    2. Run Activity Monitor, find the CS3 process, and click the Sample Process button. In the call stack I noticed there were printer-related calls.
    3. Ran System Preferences and selected Print/Fax - it also hung.
I had a networked printer configured.
    Then - to fix...
    1. Killed off everything.
    2. Disabled Airport.
    3. Ran System Preferences, selected Print/Fax, deleted my printer.
    4. Re-enabled Airport.
    5. Ran CS3 - worked straight away.
Even if you don't have a printer problem the Activity Monitor step may help find out what CS3 is up to when it hangs.
    Hope this helps,
    Jon.

  • Photoshop Elements 4 menu items grayed out after opening from iPhoto

    Hi,
I just set PSE4 as my preferred photo editor in the General Preferences pane of iPhoto '08. When I edit a photo in iPhoto, PSE4 boots up (as expected and desired); however, all the menu items are inexplicably grayed out now in PSE4, so doing any editing is impossible unless keystrokes are used. Unfortunately, I don't know what all the keystrokes are for various functions, if keystrokes exist for each... Does anyone know anything about this? Gurus, please help! Advance thanks.

Heheh: the inexplicable mysteries of the digital universe. Opening PSE4 up first, and then editing the photos in iPhoto so they appear in PSE4 worked! The menu items were no longer grayed out - all functional. Thanks Terence!

  • 800-COMCAST hangs up on me after menu items

800-COMCAST hangs up on me after menu items. I have tried more than 5 times now for some billing questions that I have and it keeps hanging up before it could connect me to an agent. Is this how the customer service works?

Same thing happening to me. I have an urgent issue that needs addressing. I have called literally 14 times. They ask for the last 4 of SSN, and say they willl connect. Between 1 minute and 39 seconds and 2 minutes exactly someone picks up and hangs up immediately. Comcast.....why would you do this? What did I ever do to you to deserve this? I'm serious. Why?All I do is give you money? Where is the downside of that for you? Do you know how excrutiatingy painful it is to spend 40 minutes trying to make 1 phone call and being hung up on, over, and over, and over? And all I have to show for this (goodbye lunch break) is a waste of time and 14 rejections. I wish I could make your CEO experience this. He would go ballistic.

  • Photoshop CS3 causing new iMac to hang

I have an issue with Photoshop CS3 hanging my iMac.
When the application is active but in the background and unused for a while and I return to use it the entire machine becomes unresponsive, the mouse cursor can still be moved around the screen but nothing can be clicked (wireless mighty mouse), force quit can not be invoked to kill PS.
I have to resort to switching of the machine in order to get it back up.
Has anyone else seen this, either on an iMac or other intel macs..?

Not to dismiss your problem by any means, I thought I'd report my experience since I'm running PS CS3 as well. I'm on a 24" iMac and PS CS3 has been running well for me.
In addition to the keyboard and my Epson all-in-one printer (plugged into the back), I have a Logitech cordless mouse whose dock is plugged into the keyboard, and I have a USB 2.0 Maxtor hard drive plugged into the back.
I am getting general problems when I try to use my Belkin usb hub and when I use my usb card reader for any length of time, but I can't see that they have had any effect on running PS CS3.
Like I said - not to dismiss your issue - I just thought it might be helpful to share about my peripherals etc.
    Good Luck,
    Frank B.

Hello! I use Photoshop CS3 and Yosemite. Recently, after logging info information into the FILE INFO panel, I am unable to close out the window. I am able to save & close out the image, but then I have to completely close Photoshop and re-open the program to work on a new image. Frustrating! Any help to remedy this problem? Many thanks!

Try resetting the Photoshop preference file: Press and hold Cmd+Opt+Shift and start Photoshop. Select "yes" when asked if you would like to continue with reset.

  • In Photoshop CS6 the 3D menu is grayed out

I have Photoshop CS6 13.0.1 x64 Extended and all options under the 3D manu are grayed out. My graphic adapter is nVidia GeForce GTX 650 (it has 1024 MB memory). I have Windows 7 x64 and 8GB RAM.
In Performance settings I have checked to use the graphic processor and in Advanced settings the drawing mode either Basic, Normal or Advanced, it doesn't make a difference.
The drivers for my graphic card are from February.
I just tried to create a 3D postcard and got this message:
Any clues why the 3D doesn't work and what can be done about it?
Here is a fragment of System Info regarding the display driver. The line with OpenCL Version is empty, although I have checked "Use OpenCL", could this be a problem?

I've made tests with four different 3rd party tools: OpenGL Extension Viewer, GPU Caps Viewer, Compute4Cash OpenCL Diagnostic Tool and Mudlord's Glide3x wrapper tester. All those tools report no problems with my video card driver and OpenGL/CL.
I have contacted nVidia and based on reports from the tools and visual tests from GPU Caps Viewer nVidia support doesn't see a problem with my driver.
I found sniffer_gpu.exe which according to Adobe Help pages is a kind of diagnostic tool and determines whether Photoshop uses the graphic card OpenCL or not. Here is the output:

    OpenCL ok, version=1.1 CUDA 4.2.1
    Return code: 3
From Adobe GPU Sniffer tool, it looks OK.
On the other hand, I have your word that there is no problem with Photoshop not recognizing OpenCL for my card and that nVidia driver has problems. Can you justify this somehow? Perhaps you could provide more details on technical level, or another utility to run and extract details, to at least identify the problem Photoshop has and hopefully solve it on either side.
P.S. During tests there were two things which I noticed, but they are probably not related to the issue:
    1. One tool reports the lack of Windows registry key SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows (NT)/CurrentVersion/OpenGLDrivers. But according to your previous statement, Photoshop only uses OS calls, no registry and according to nVidia, this key is not used in Windows 7.
    2. During some tests GPU Caps Viewer reports that "OpenCL CPU not supported on the selected platform". This is not complaining about GPU, only about CPU. But Photoshop is complaining about GPU, so it shouldn't be relevant.

  • [JS CS3] Why is menu item greyed out?

    Hello,
I have the following script that works fine on both my Mac and PC. However, I have sent it two other people and both report the same problem that the menu item shows up in the menus but all the options are greyed out.
I thought it might be a problem of the path but when I deliberately make a wrong path on my computer I get an error message telling me the path does not exist. The two other people get no such message so there may be another problem.

  • Photoshop CC menu items greyed out

I just downloaded CC yesterday and was trying to make a lense flare effect on a layer and it is greyed out.
I trued the same thing in my CS 6 and it works fine.
Nothing is selected etc. on the layer, just doesn't give me the option to choose the filter effects.
Do I need to do anything special in CC to get this done.
Watching a Lynda.com video and it looks like I'm not missing anything.
    Thoughts?

If you have a layer targeted Filter>Render>Lens Flare should not be grayed out.  Try resetting your preferences

  • CS3 - Scripts Menu item greyed out after using file info

This looks like a bug to me, anyone else had the same problem ? Or solutions
I have a couple of scripts which add an extra menu item called "Scripts" on the menu bar (and sub-menu items to call the scripts). If I open the 'file info' for a selected file and then close it again (doesn't matter if it is cancel or okay) the "Scripts" menu item is now greyed out and not accessible.
Only cure is to shut down and restart bridge - very annoying.

  • Macbook hangs on blue screen with menu icons, won't start

I am having an issue with my MacBook (2010), which won't fully start up anymore. It gets past the initial grey loading screen and starts loading a few of the menu bar icons in the upper right corner. Then it stops with only a few of those icons loaded, a blue screen, and no desktop icons.
The MacBook is running 10.6 (if I remember correctly, it's 10.6.8, but I'm not 100% sure).
    Things I've tried already:
    - Safe boot (doesn't work, no indication that it recognizes me trying to start it in safe mode)
    - Resetting the PRAM
    - Leaving it on for a long time to see if it will eventually start
I lost the OS disc a while ago, so unfortunately I can't boot from that. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

You might want to consider running the combo updater over your install to refresh your files.
    Combo updater: Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update v.1.1 - 1.09 GB
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.6.8 install from a regular update, just run the 10.6.8 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.6.7 to 10.6.8. If somehow the 10.6.8 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.6.7 and 10.6.8 it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • My hue/saturation filter quits working in Photoshop CS3

I keep having this issue where my hue/saturation filter just quits working.  I use that filter religiously so it has to be fixed each time it occurs.  I've only had the Adobe CS3 for 3 months and I've had to resolve this 3 times now.  Each time this has happend I've had to uninstall the entire CS3 design package and do a complete reinstall which takes almost 4 hours because my download uses the Adobe server.  My product download was purchased online so I do not have a disk but rather files that I downloaded from Adobe with product serial numbers.
I've used Adobe for years, as far back as Adobe 5, and never had such a problem!  I've checked in my preferences and have ample RAM available for the settings.  I use Dell inspirion and have 2 GB of RAM total on my system.
Can someone please advise why this would keep happening.
    Thank you very much.

Resetting your preferences is much faster than uninstalling/reinstalling, so if you haven't tried it, that would be what to do next, although it would be nice to figure out what the issue is.
To reset your preferences hold the Ctrl-Alt-Shift keys down (windows) or Ctrl-Option-Shift keys down (mac) as you start up Photoshop.  You should get a message confirming whether you want to delete the preferences file.  If resetting preferences fixes things, then you should try to remember what you've been doing, just prior to having the problem.
Once Hue/Sat sliders seem to be disabled, are they still way for all images that you open (a JPG for example), or are they just messed up for one image, but you need to work on that image so you have to fix things before doing anything else?  Hue/Sat is not a valid operation for certain modes, like Grayscale, although the menu item is disabled in this case.

Subject: Re: My hue/saturation filter quits working in Photoshop CS3
The hue/saturation filter window does open and it is not grayed out.  However, it does not allow me to do any thing to it.  I try to slide the saturation to the left or right and it does not move.  The same goes for the "Lightness" and "Hue".  I don't understand why it will work for a month or so and then just quit.  I end up rebooting my system to try and resolve but unfortunately once this occurs it seems to be stuck no matter what I do, that is until I unstall the entire program and reinstall...
So if I need to change something in my preferences, what do you suggest that would be?  I appreciate your help, thank you.

  • LR cannot launch Photoshop CS3

My Lightroom 2.5 installation fails to edit images in CS3. It launches the CS3 application but the file does not appear, and LR reports that "The files could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop CS3 could not be launched" - even though it was!
If I run CS3 first rather than expect FR to launch it, then the same problem occurs. If I setup Photoshop as an External Editor, then CS3 is launched and the image is opened OK so CS3 seems to be able to accept being run by LR. Unfortunatelt I was hoping to use the option to use the "Merge To PAnorama In Photoshop" option provided in the default Edit in Photoshop menu, so the manual External Editor is no good to me.
Anyone seen this before, or got any idea how to fix it?
    TIA
    HArv

Sorry Ian, bit of confusion at this end.
LR is using Camera Raw 5.5 but CS3 is using Camera Raw 4.6.
My camera is a Nikon D300 so 4.6 should be fine.
I do get a warning when trying to open a bunch of images for "Merge To Panorama In Photoshop" that CS3 only has ACR 4.6 but LR has ACR 5.5, but I select "Open Anyway" as I would expect it to work, or does LR 2.5 not talk to CS3 properly when merging to panoramas - I wonder?.
    Any further ideas?
    Thanks again
