Photoshop CS3 Artistic Filters

I am applying Artistic filters to an image in Photoshop. Some of the filters are turning the image into a black and white image, for example, the "torn edges filter." And it then does not seem possible to change that layer into a colored layer. Other filters, such as "glass" leave the image its original color. Is it possible to use the torn edges filter without turning the image black and white?

Quote from the Help:
Torn Edges
Reconstructs the image so that it appears composed of ragged, torn pieces of paper, and then colorizes the image using the foreground and background colors. This filter is particularly useful for text or high-contrast objects.

  • Artistic Filters in CS3

    Hi guys,
i have photoshop cs3 installed on several machines on a network. It all seems to work fine except the artistic filters. i can select a filter and preview it ok but when i apply them nothing happens, the filters will not apply. Help me please!!!

What kind of image format are you using them on?
Do they work with 8-bit rgb files?
If not try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • Nikon D300 Raw files for 64bit windows vista machine not appearing in Photoshop CS3 raw

I purchased a new 64bit computer running Vista. I have installed Photoshop CS3 including the latest updates and the 4.6 (Camera Raw.8bi) raw update file. I included the raw file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats. I have purged cache in Bridge and I still cannot view the raw files in Bridge. I only see a gray square with a Blue NEF. I can open the files in Photoshop however. What can I do to see the files in Bridge?

    Nikon encrypts RAW file data
ByMichael R. Tomkins, The Imaging Resource
    (Wednesday, April 20, 2005 - 02:16 EDT)
A news item posted on Sunday by PhotoshopNews.com reports on comments from Thomas Knoll, one of the original authors of Adobe Photoshop, relating to the RAW file format used in Nikon's D2X and D2Hs digital SLRs.
    <IFRAME src="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/banners.fpl?region=112&keyword=NULL" height="250" width="300" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" vspace="0" hspace="0" frameborder="0" align="middle" scrolling="no"> <A href="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/blink.fpl?region=112&slot=1" target="_blank"> <IMG src="http://208.43.255.194/cgi-bin/advertpro/bimg.fpl?region=112&slot=1&keyword=NULL" border="0" width="300" height="250" alt="Click Here!"> </A> </IFRAME>
Thomas Knoll is currently the chief engineer for Adobe Camera Raw, the company's RAW file conversion software. The PhotoshopNews item references a forum thread started by Mr. Knoll in Adobe's official user forums, where he reveals that .NEF RAW files from the latest Nikon digital SLRs encrypt data relating to the white balance setting the photo was shot with.
RAW file formats vary significantly between digital camera manufacturers (and often, between different models in a manufacturer's lineup), and the manufacturers generally won't publicly disclose the specification for the RAW file format(s) they use. Some will offer plugins or software development kits (SDKs) that enable their RAW files to be opened in third-party applications, but these generally have some limitations attached to their use.
In addition, the companies generally offer RAW file conversion software of their own, either as part of their camera bundles or as an added-cost option. Nikon offer their pro SLRs with PictureProject software that includes limited control over the RAW file conversion process, and then offer the more feature-rich Nikon Capture conversion software for an added cost. In a recent publication on the company's Nikon Pro website, it suggested that it feels Nikon Capture is better-suited to photographers, while Adobe's Photoshop is more suited to graphic artists. Still, different photographers have different workflow preferences, and for this reason third parties such as Adobe often reverse engineer the RAW file formats, allowing them to be opened in their own software - sometimes with even better image quality than the original manufacturer's software.
In a way, it is understandable that companies would want to encrypt RAW file data from their products - it allows them to pick and choose which competitors are able to open RAW files shot with their products, and allows them to generate new revenue streams from the sale of their own RAW file conversion software (or, if they choose, the sale of licenses allowing competitor programs to access their RAW file data). Nikon is not the first company we're aware of to encrypt data in RAW files; Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-F828 RAW files contain encrypted data. In that instance, however, Sony granted permission for Adobe to decrypt the data in their software. At the current time, Mr. Knoll states that while Adobe has signed a non-disclosure agreement that grants them access to use Nikon's SDK, they have not received any response to requests from Adobe that the company be allowed to decrypt the white balance data, which would allow closer integration with their software than is possible with the SDK.
The fact that Nikon has chosen to encrypt a portion of the RAW file data would not be particularly problematic for third parties to overcome, were it not for certain laws enacted around the world in recent years. One such law is the United States' "Digital Millennium Copyright Act", often referred to as the DMCA, which makes it illegal to produce technology that can circumvent measures designed to protect copyright. One could argue that Nikon's encryption of the white balance data is just such a measure - which would make it an offense for a third party without permission to make software that could decrypt the original white balance setting used by the camera when the photo was shot. One could equally argue, however, that the copyright over the RAW file belongs to the photographer who captured the image - and hence the choice over what is done with that copyrighted work is entirely up to the photographer.
Unfortunately, there's no clear-cut answer, and short of a company or programmer finding themselves in court for having cracked the encryption, there isn't likely to be such an answer any time soon. This presents a problem for third parties attempting to make their own RAW file conversion routines for the D2X and D2Hs, as if they don't want to risk opening themselves up to legal action, they aren't able to determine the original white balance setting. Hence, they must either request the white balance setting from the user as the RAW file is converted, or attempt to determine an appropriate white balance setting automatically (which would not necessarily be the same as that determined by the camera itself).
Nikon hasn't communicated their reasons for encrypting the white balance information in their latest NEF formats, but we have to say it doesn't sound like a very good idea. While Nikon Capture does indeed offer excellent capabilities for people to manipulate images saved in NEF formats, many photographers and organizations have already established workflows based on Adobe's RAW plugin for Photoshop and other image-processing tools. The biggest consequence of this move on Nikon's part seems likely to be to push more photographers onto other camera platforms. It's hard to imagine that increased sales of Nikon Capture will make up the revenue lost from camera and lens sales going forward.

  • Can I open psd file made in photoshop cs3 with photoshop ps2?

Can I open psd file made in photoshop cs3 with photoshop ps2? Thanks in advance!

Actually you can open a CS3 file with smart filters in CS2
the only problem is CS2 will not understand the Smart filter and flatten it.
If you leave the smart filtered object alone in CS2 save the file and it should still be a smart filtered object in CS3

  • CS3 and PowerPC Mac - can't get Photoshop CS3 to install

I'm using a PowerPC based Mac - OSX v 10.4.11. I tried to install the CS3 suite - some apps installed fine, some did not. Photoshop CS3 did not install. Now when I try to use PS CS2 quite a few features are missing, particularly in the filters menu. Has anyone seen this? Please help!
    Thanks

You almost certainly will have to remove CS3 from your System before you can re-install CS2. After you have installed CS2, you can then re-install CS3 in addition.
Use the Adobe Uninstaller and run the CleanScript as well for good measure.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs3clean.html
Then repair permissions both before and again after installing the software.

  • Photoshop CS3's new features supported by Aperture?

    hi:
i'm intrigued by some of the new features in Photoshop CS3 such as the non-destructive filters. i'm wondering how Aperture treats these new types of layers or filters when using CS3 as an external editor. i don't have CS2, so i don't think i was eligible for the beta download (and didn't have much time to play with it anyway).
just wondering what others have thought that might have played with these features in the beta?
    thanks,
    scott
    PowerMac G5 2.5GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   MacBook Pro 2.0GHz

I took a DNG file from my M8 and opened it as a 'smart object' in PS-CS3. I then applied several adjustment layers and smart filters before saving the file out as as a PSD file.
Aperture then imported the PSD file with no trouble and allowed me to make adjustments using Aperture's adjustment panes. Finally I exported the image as a JPEG and opened that JPEG in my browser and Preview application. No problems.
The only think that Aperture wouldn't do was import the Leica M8 file directly. This would be a good time for someone to repeat the tired line that Aperture won't open DNG files because they can't support a proprietary file standard that is controlled by on outside company. DNG = PDF = PSD in this regard. Only one of these isn't supported fully as far as I can tell.

  • Getting error on imac at time of loading photoshop CS3 plugin - "One or more plugins currently not available on you system"

    Hi,
I am getting below error message while loading photoshop plugin on intel mac os 10.5.7 in photoshop CS3.
"One or more plugins are currently not available on you system. For details, see  Help -> System info"
In System info it is giving error as
    "Plug-ins that failed to load:

I have build this code with Xcode v3.0 & selected settings build configuration as "i386".
Is there any CS3 SDK updated need for intel mac or any build settings need to be done in xcode?
Same plugin is working well on emac, but giving above mentioned error on intel mac.
Please let me know if anyone have any idea about this.
    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a PiPL issue, can you show us your definition?

  • Preview window not accurate - Adobe Photoshop CS3

Alright, I'm using the Adobe Photoshop CS3 trial on a Windows Vista machine - I've been using it for a couple days and I've noticed a number of times that the image in the preview window doesn't match what I get (usually after using image adjustment tools like Layer, Contrast/Brightness, or Curves - haven't noticed it so much with Filters, but haven't been using those as much yet either).
Anyone noticed this? Anything I can do to correct it? It's pretty frustrating! I'll make a bunch of movements on a curves window to get everything where I want it, and then when I hit OK, the original image doesn't change the way it's supposed to.
    Thanks!

Look at the image at 100%. Only then you see an accurate representation.

  • Freezing Photoshop CS3

Hey guys, just bought a new pc:
    Asus AM3
    AMD X2 6400+
    2x Kingston 512MB 533
    2x Corsair 1GB 533
    XFX GF 8800GT
    Thermaltake Purepower 2.0 - 600W
Running Photoshop CS3 on Windows XP Pro SP2
It is a very fast machine, but when I'm using Photoshop CS3, it freezes, like a slow CPU...
It runs fast for heavy operations, like applying filters, but freezes with very simple operations, like creating a new blank layer... when I press CTRL+L for levels, it takes a long time to appear the levels window...
Also, the mouse pointer 'jumps', freezes...
I tried to change the "scratch disk" options... and it still freezes...
    Any help?
    Thanks for now!

    Hey Bill, thanks for help!
    So... I got 3 HDDs:
    1 80GB 7200RPM ATA (C: 80GB)
    2 250GB 7200RPM SATA (D: 100GB / E: 150GB)
    3 120GB 7200RPM ATA (F: 120GB)
And about the memories, they're running fine with Illustrator, Corel, InDesign etc... Only Photoshop is running slow.
And there is a weird thing, PS only show 1711MB of available RAM.
I set up 1280MB for PS. Cache: 8 levels, History States: 256
Scratch disks on D: (SATA = faster)...
I used to set up the same config on my old PC (3200+,1GB RAM).
And the Windows virtual memory is set up to 2046~4096MB.
    Thank you again!

  • Lightroom, Photoshop CS3 and Smart Objects

Is there a way to select a raw file in Lightroom and choose to have it open in
Photoshop CS3 as a smart object, or can this only be done thru ACR? I've looked
over v1.1 and didn't notice this as an option.

If I want to do any editing not allowed to smart objects such as clone stamp I can then create a layer and then apply the clone stamp to the layer, can't I?
And that is where the underlying Smart Object starts losing (some of) its usefulness.
Because all those edits will be unaffected if you should choose to change the development settings of the embedded RAW.
Secondly, should I also convert all layers to smart layers or leave them as a normal layer.
    What for?
Unless you want to non-destructively apply transformations or Filters or need several instances of something in one file it would mainly cause a drag on performance. (Edit: or bloat the files’s size)
But in those cases Smart Objects offer significant advantages.

  • Ability to add artistic filters to HDR image created in CS5?

    Hi,
I created an HDR image last night in CS5 but it wouldn't let me apply any of the artistic filters to it.  Is that just not possible or must I do something else first in order to apply filters?   It seems to work fine with HDR created in Photomatix...just wasn't working on the one I created in Photoshop.
    Thanks for your help!

As I work around, I found that you can save the image off as a jpeg, then open that version to edit and you are able to apply any of the filters (artistic/brushstrokes/distort, etc.).  If anyone knows of an easier way, please let me know.
    Thanks!

  • Annoying bug in Photoshop CS3 Standard 10.0.1

I am using Windows XP SP2 with all current hotfixes. My PC has a single CRT monitor attached, an Athlon 2400+ CPU inside, and 1 GB of RAM. The Nvidia graphic card has 64 MB. I have Photoshop CS3 Standard 10.0.1 with Camera Raw 4.3.1 and Bridge CS3 2.1.1 (and all the other CS3 updates, too).
Whenever I copy new filters (i. e. .8BF files) to ~\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\Plug-Ins\Filters (or actually to a new subdirectory therein), snapshots as well as the Lab mode cease to work properly. When taking a snapshot, the snapshot's thumbnail in the History palette is pure black; so is the first snapshot automatically taken on opening an image. When switching into Lab mode, both the image as well as its Lab thumbnail in the Channels palette are pure black (strangely, the L channel, the a channel, and the b channel are not black but correct). When deleting the new filters from the Filters directory, both snapshots and Lab mode will work properly again. This has nothing to do with the kind of filters or with applying the filters. If they are just sitting there, things go haywire.
Another way to fix the issue (besides deleting the filters) is to 'repair' the Photoshop installation after installing the filters, i. e. to re-run the Photoshop setup procedure without prior de-installation. It takes about half an hour to complete, and afterwards Photoshop will accept the new filters without screwing up snapshots or Lab mode.
Resetting the preferences does not fix the issue.
Has someone experienced the same? By the way, the problem was there in Photoshop 10.0, too (but not in CS2).
    -- Olaf

There's just a flurry of complaints about CS3 crashing under Yosemite. The upgrade is known to damage CS5 installs. Adobe only certifies CS6, CC, and CC 2014 as being tested for Yosemite.
I would not advise it. You would more than likely have to reinstall CS3 and its' updates, as well as your printer drivers and no guarantee it will be the same.
If your work depends on CS3 functioning, hold off for now, or until you upgrade Photoshop.
You are taking chances you probably don't need to.  If it works, don't fix it.

  • Tools unavailable in Photoshop CS3

In Photoshop CS3 (as part of Design Suite), sometimes (no obvious change causing it) all the tools become unavailable, both in Photoshop and in Bridge. When I click an icon or use a keyboard shortcut, the options appear (e.g., the brush options for the brush tool, or crop options for crop), but the cursor in the image editing area remains a hand and does not function. Other functions, such as filters, work fine.
There is a FAQ about a similar problem in CS2, relating to a tablet, but I don't have a tablet, only mice.
The problem goes away with a restart of the system (Win XP SP2), though not with a use logoff/logon.
    Any ideas?

Reset your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.
