Photoshop CS3 - blur a shape

I have Photoshop CS3 - I have a long arrow shape and I want 1 end to be clear and the other end gradually getting blurier - (eg. 1 end of the arrow would be 0 and the other 100% blurry) sort of like using the Gradient tool. I can't figure out how to do this in CS3. Any suggestions

1. Create a copy of the layer (Layer > Duplicate Layer)
     a. If this is a vector layer, you will have to rasterize the copy (Layer > Rasterize > Shape)
2. Apply a blur to the layer copy (Filter > Blur, choose a blur, Gaussian is popular).
3. Add a mask to the layer copy (Layer > Layer Mask > Reveal All)
4. Apply a black and white gradient to the mask (with the Gradient tool)
     a. Black will conceal the blur so make sure the black side of the gradient is on the end you want to be clear.

  • Can you blur vector shapes in Photoshop without rasterizing?

Is there a way to blur vector shapes in Photoshop, similar to the way Illustrator does, without having to rasterizing the layer? I am working with a very large file that has been scaled from 300dpi to 50 in order to manage it while working. I will sclae back to 300 dpi before sending to printer. Rasterized images will soften as you know which i guess is ok when it comes to a blurred shape, now that i think about it. But for future reference?
    Thanks,

In the layer of interest make sure the vector mask is selected. Then in the Masks panel adjust the feather slider to an amount that looks right.

  • Colours in Photoshop CS3/Bridge - Windows

After editing images in Photoshop CS3 (using a calibrated Eizo monitor S2231W) and viewing them in Bridge (whether PSD or JPG) in the presentation modus, the colours change a bit and become oversaturated when I change the presentation from "fit in" to 100%(by scrolling the mouse wheel). The same oversaturated colours appear also in other Windows viewers (e.g. Magix, irfanview). Of course I can use a different custom preset on the monitor when viewing the images on the monitor and reduce the saturation there, but the colour change will remain. So how can I see in Photoshop when editing and be sure what the colours will be like in a Windows presentation?
(PS- changing the colour settings in Photoshop did not help)
Thank you for helping! - Jochen

I'm using this image found in the windows sample pictures "Annie in the Sink.jpg"
as an example because it's small. If you use this action on camera size images,
your system can really slow down.
(click on the screenshots below for clearer views)
    1. Run the Vectorize Web Graphic part of the action. (i just left the gaussian blur
       at the default setting)
    2. Use a combination of adjusting the threshold adjustment layer and painting
on the Dodge and Burn layer to get the black areas to cover the part of image
you want. The black areas are the areas that will be included in the paths and
white areas are exclued from the paths.
    3. Paint on the Dodge and Burn layer with the regular paint brush tool, not the dodge
and burn tools. Painting with white removes the areas to be included in the paths
and painting with black adds to the areas included in the paths. Set the default
foreground and background (black and white) colors at the bottom of the toolbox by
pressing the D key on the keyboard.
    4. You might have to stack the Dodge and Burn layers to get the results your after.
    5. Run the Make Path from Image part of the action.
Final path and still kinda rough photoshop result and after copying the
path to a new RGB color document and adding a color fill adjustment layer.
If you have a recent version of illustrator, then you might try the Live Trace instead of this action.
The tracing features in recent versions of illustrator are so much better than when this action was written.
Added: it helps to duplicate your image before running any of the actions so you
have a reference while painting on the dodge and burn layer(s).

  • Rotoscoping With Photoshop CS3

I want to trace the motion of a dancer from a Quicktime video.
I have imported the video into Photoshop CS3, but when I add a new layer, the layer is a single picture layer that remains over all the frames.
Do I have to create a separate layer for every frame that I want to draw, or is there a way to create a single layer with multiple frames?
(And can that Onion Skin feature help me out with this project?)
    Thanks!

That is a the same thing as a new layer with all the frames, if you want to do a frame by frame then you have to convert it to a frame by frame sequence also from the time line fly out.
If you want to create shapes or text the will over print the video then you place in it on the layer you created and any changes you make you have to use the keyframes to do that.
Expand the layer and you will the position, opacity and scale keyframe controls.
Draw a shape, click on the clock next to position, now move the timeline position indicator to another position say to one second. now move the object, a new keyframe appears in the timeline align in the position keyframes.
Pull the the indicator back to the 0 position see the object moved back to where it was.
It has all the frames it is up t you to d with it what you can.
If you need to more, like change colors then it is better to do this with After Effects or Premiere, After Effects would be better and has a lot of plug ins albeit expensive.
If you really need further information I will do a brief video. Bt there should be one already on the Adobe in the tutorials do a search photoshop animation tutorials.

  • Photoshop CS3 Brush Smoothing does not work

    Hi,
I need help with the brush tool in Photoshop CS3. All the brushes appear to be pixelated, and I'm unable to draw any smooth lines at all. Whatever I draw comes out edgy and rough.
On the other hand, the eraser tool still produces smooth lines. I tried fiddling with brush preferences, but nothing I do helps: I just can't draw smooth lines with the brush tool, although the smoothing option is turned on.
I'd really appreciate your help, since it's been a couple of days since I was able to draw.

Maybe this will help; I couldn't tell for sure from your description.
Go to Brushes > Brush Tip Shape, and at the bottom of that box slide the slider for Spacing to 0.

  • I can't update my Photoshop CS3 in order to open pictures made with Canon Eos 60 D

I can't update my Photoshop CS3 in order to open pictures made with Canon Eos 60 D

It's not terrible even if you jump a few versions; the Adobe folks don't want change a good thing, so much of what one expects is still where you expect to find it from version to version.  A person who upgrades from Photoshop CS3 to CS6 will find the new Tabbed View, introduced first in CS4, and probably won't like it (at first), but it actually can grow on you.
With CS6 they've introduced this new "shape layer" abstraction of what was once a fill layer with a vector mask.  Beyond that, I suppose there must be 3D changes, though I haven't the experience to tell since Photoshop CS6 is the first version I've moved up to Extended with.  I admit, the 3D stuff is fun to play with.
Just to give you an idea of what I've been doing with Photoshop just this evening...  My collaborator and I have been photographing carbon stars - red giant stars whose atmosphere contains more carbon than oxygen, and which are strikingly red.  In this image the carbon star, SAO49477 is the red member of the close double just up-right of center.  The red stuff between the stars is glowing hydrogen gas, singly ionized by starlight to emit a deep red color.  Someday it will coalesce and make more stars.

  • Upgrade to Photoshop CS3

According to [this website|http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLear nMore=TM717LL/A], the upgrade to Adobe Photoshop CS3 requires a serial number. Unfortunately I have not used my version of Photoshop CS in a couple years and I have lost all documentation (the serial number and who it was registered too) and the box. But I opened it today and on the About section and there was two lines of words (1 and 2) and then what looked like a serial number:
So can you verify the long jumble of numbers is in fact my serial number? If it is not, how can I obtain it (I lost my box)? And also can you identify what 1 and 2 are?
Thanks so much in advance for your help!
    -thealexness

*"So can you verify the long jumble of numbers is in fact my serial number?"*
Yes it is a serial number, but not the complete serial number. This is done for security purposes.
    *"how can I obtain it"*
Call Adobe. Or, if anyone knows how you maybe be able to extract the complete number you'd find them on Adobe's own discussion forum, as Photoshop is not an Apple product, and your question is not anything Mac related.
    http://www.adobeforums.com
*"And also can you identify what 1 and 2 are?"*
Well, no, because you blurred it out. But it's most likely the name of person and the company it's registered to
Why don't you just install CS3 and point it to your version of CS when it asks for it or a serial number?

  • Photoshop CS3 Magic Wand bug?

I'm want to use photoshop CS3's magic wand tool to make a selection of a colored shape on my background layer.
However when I click the mouse, the wand selects EVERYTHING on the layer. it doesn't matter what my tolerance level is set to. I've tried cranking it down to 0 and I still get everything selected.
Is this a bug? or am I doing something wrong?

The eye dropper sample size setting will affect how the magic wand operates. CS3 added some new sample sizes. Have you by chance been testing them out? If so, the cure might be as easy as changing your eye dropper sample setting.
Thank you so much for pointing this out.  I was having exactly this same problem and your suggestion fixed things for me immediately.
I've been using Photoshop for maybe nine years now, but obviously that's not quite enough.  I don't know how it is that I've never noticed the relationship between the eye dropper and wand tool before.
I think the wand tool sample size should be independent of the eye dropper tool sample size.  It should be something you can change explicitly from the wand tool's option bar.  Tying those two otherwise completely unrelated tools together in that way is unintuitive.
Anyway, thanks.  I'm just happy to be able to use the wand again.

  • PhotoshopNews: Adobe Photoshop CS3 at a glance!

    http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/14/adobe-photoshop-cs3-at-a-glance/
Even more content out there now on the home page of PhotoshopNews.com

I haven't been able to download CS3 yet, but the Martin Evening pdf (thanks for the link!) has what looks like a piece of great news buried in it:
"For example, before you first had to create an empty new document with the exact pixel dimensions before you could place an image (such as a raw file) as a Smart Object. With Photoshop CS3, you can now place a raw capture file as a Smart Object layer in a single step."
If I understand this right, it means that the functionality of the old Dr Brown Place-a-Matic script is now available from Aperture. We can -- or this makes me hope we can -- send a RAW from Aperture to PSCS3 for editing, and then Place the same image, perhaps twice, as a Smart Object, edit away, and when we Save get the whole edited image back in Aperture without going through the Finder.
I used to use this (from Bridge) all the time to double-expose RAW shots: adjust the sky to one exposure and the ground to another, masking to get both into the final image, all without messing with the pixels of the RAW image. I've missed it. Whoopee.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Image Processor not converting files to sRGB Profile

I have been experiencing a problem with Photoshop CS3 Image Processor no longer converting profiles to sRGB.   It converts all of the files from Camera Raw to JPEG, but not sRGB as well.  I used to be able to batch convert an entire folder of RAW images to JPEG, sRGB through the Image Processor.
My Photoshop CS3 Working Space is Adobe RGB (1998).  I need to convert an entire folder of images selected in Bridge to sRGB working space in order to publish a photo album from one of the on-line publishing companies.  I can open each individual Camera Raw file in Photoshop and convert each to JPEG, sRGB, but this takes a tremendous amount of time.
The following procedure has worked for me in the past, but for some reason no longer works:
I select the images in the desired Bridge CS3 folder.  Upper tool bar, "Tools" > "Photoshop" > "Image Processor".  In Image Processor:
Section 1 - ""Process files from Bridge only (11)"  Whether or not I place a checkmark by "Open first image to apply settings", it makes no difference in the outcome.
Section 2:  "Save in same location"
Section 3 - "Checkmark by "Save as JPEG, quality 12".  Also a checkmark by "Convert Profile to sRGB"
Section 4 - Checkmark by "Include ICC Profile"
I replaced my iMac one month ago and reinstalled Photoshop CS3, but this Image Processor problem had been occurring even with my old computer.
Not sure if you need this information:
I'm currently on Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
Processor:  2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory:  8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I don't know if it's related,  Photoshop CS3 on my old computer was running in Rosetta.  I don't know if it's running in Rosetta now, the name does not appear when Photoshop boots up.  How do I get it to run in Rosetta again?

Heh heh heh.  It's always true that we find the answer just after making public our problems, which in turn we did after trying to find the problems ourselves for hours.
Thanks for following up with the answer.
