Photoshop CS3 Book and Tutorial Recommendations

Hi there,
I am a beginner CS3 user. My main interest is in enhancing old graphic prints (not digital photography). By enhancing I mean changing colors, brightness, contrast, and sometimes redrawing a section of the original print. I typically scan the prints and save the images as tiff files that I then open in CS3. I'm running OSX 10.4.11.
There are numerous books on Photoshop CS3 on Amazon, but I am finding it difficult to make a choice. I would like book and tutorial recommendations from the Photoshop user forum community.
Thanks!
Al

I'll suggest a different tack altogether. As I'm a visually oriented, I find that being shown is far more effective than reading about things. Parsing intellectual abstractions (language) rather than dealing directly with the subject through imagery always seems like an extra labor... at least at the beginning until I have enough of a syntax built to enable contextual relevance.
With that preface I'd suggest you look at Deke McClelland's video tutorials now available online from Lynda.com. Start with "Photoshop CS3 One-on-One: The Essentials' followed by "Photoshop CS3 One-on-One: Beyond the Basics" and "Photoshop CS3 One-on-One: Advanced Techniques." After Deke's tutorials you will be prepared to dive into any of the many others Photoshop CS3 authors available on Lynda.com.
http://movielibrary.lynda.com/authors/author/?aid=98
When I first started Photoshop, it was so dense and alien that, even with several books to help, I considered myself only a beginner even after a year or so of intense struggle. Then I ran into Deke's training and felt that I made a huge jump in comprehension and skill set in a very short time. I would watch the training and during the first go would do the examples. After once through I would work with PS for a bit to let the training sink in and then watch once more followed by more work. After the third viewing, I'd absorbed almost all I was going to and Deke's jokes were old so it was time to move on.
The training on Lynda.com is very reasonably priced for the value of the training and I would suggest Deke's tutorials to any beginner as a more effective way to start than books.

  • Photoshop CS3 Save and Save As Dialog box not working

I can't do a "save as" or "save for web" in photoshop cs3. The dialog box opens and I can't change anything but the file type pull down menu (and sometimes not even that). This problem happens sporadically.... but most of the time it doesn't work.
I have re-installed Photoshop cs3 but I still have the same problem.
    Photoshop CS3 10.0.1
    MacPro 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory : 4GB
    Mac OS 10.5.8
    Please Help

I'm seeing exactly this same problem with Photoshop CS3  after the upgrade to 10.5.8. It appears that the dialog box never gets focus for "Save for Web and Devices" -- the title bar of the dialog is grayed out, while the main "Save for Web and Devices" panel still has focus.  That means there's no way to clear the dialog, since the panel is waiting for it to return, but the dialog can't get any input.  None of the standard resets work for any length of time.  I seem to remember similar problems in a much earlier release of Mac OS X, but I can't be sure.  Quite annoying.

  • Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.2, Photoshop CS3, 8800GT and Dual Monitors - Crashing

Hi, I received my Mac Pro (with Nvidia 8800GT) earlier this week and set it up with my dual monitors. I soon discovered that Photoshop CS3 crashes when scrolling a 'zoomed in' image with dual monitors. Photoshop is setup so that all palettes are on the smaller samsung monitor and the main image window I'm working on is on the 23" cinema display.
I've updated both the OS and CS3 but cannot solve the problem unless I switch to a single view setup, ie, drag all the palettes over to the larger monitor so that photoshop is no longer dual monitor. Then it works fine. Although it's a workaround, it's not an ideal situation. Has anyone else found this to be an issue? Have you found a solution?
I've also re-installed Photoshop, visited a genius bar and changed mice!
Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

My Mac Pro had been running 3 Dell monitors on two NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT cards for months, and with the (I think) Safari update all of a sudden the Mac freezes, 1 monitor displays garbledy gook, and the other is blank with a blinking power light. That is, until yesterday when the power light refused to come on. So I says to myself, "Self, how about testing them on my iBook?" The 1704FPT will not power on, plugged in to a computer or not. The 1707FP shakes like crazy when starting up on the iBook, then settles in and seems to work. Meanwhile, the SP2008WFP is working alone on the Mac Pro, but not totally trouble-free. What the heck is going on?

  • Photoshop CS3 crashing and installation getting 'stuck'

Last week Photoshop CS3 started crashing when trying to select a new file to open.
This didn't seem related to any particulr file and appeared to be random.
Error message was "an unrecoverable problem has occurred, Photoshop will now quit"
Actully it didn't quit and had to be force quit.
This was happenning sporadically, but today it happened every time I tried to open any image file.
Thinking it was a good idea to re-install, I tried that but the installation got 'stuck' and couldn't be completed.
A few minutes into the installation, prompts appeared asking for the CS4 Flash disk [which we bought seperately]
and then asked for the CS3 Application disk again. That disk was put in the drive and a minute or so later it asks for the CS3 Application disk.
Which is the disk it already has...
Has anyone else had this odd situation and found a solution?
    Any thoughts appreciated!

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • Photoshop CS3 / ImageReady and Slices

    Mac OSX
We've upgraded to CS3 and it has absorbed ImageReady which is most unfortunate. I use ImageReady to copy slices from one psd to another. I've searched quite a bit to see how to do this in CS3 but haven't had any luck. Do you have any ideas?
I work on homepages that contain upwards of 30 slices. On every homepage (2-3+ a week) there is some content that can be reused and the slices need to stay in the same place in case there are changes done by a designer.
What I do in ImageReady CS2 is get the slices the correct dimensions for one homepage. Then I select all slices and copy. Then on a second homepage with no slices I am able to paste slices in to it so I wind up with two different psd files with the exact same slices done from copy/paste.
Now we have upgraded to CS3 and ImageReady is no more. I have tried to copy slices from one psd to another but when I do that it brings in the slice layer with it. I only need the slice transferred. I'm trying to avoid having to reslice homepages into 30 slices that I could easily do with a simple copy/paste.
Does that make sense? Any suggestions? I currently have CS2 (solely for ImageReady) and CS3 installed on a Mac Mini and they aren't playing well together, I get lots of crashes and our IT guy thinks this is why.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Anne,
Sorry for being so flustered and not providing details.
Here are the reasons why your methods don't solve some of our problems, not that anyone is going to come back here to to try to help but in case you do:
    And I've done some digging.
Copying and pasting creates a new layer, now why in the world would photoshop create a new layer if I'm copying and pasting a slice? Maybe I'm still not getting it.
Ok well there's this menu item under 'Layer' called 'create a layer based slice' (or something like that). Great, is this the answer to all of my problems? Well, only if you ever work with one slice per PSD and even then it doesn't copy over export settings. Well, I have maybe 20 to 30 at any given time. Try doing that 'create a layer based slice' with more than once slice copied over and you'll get one giant slice. Fail!
And the suggestion about firing up imageready? Well I have to do it by necessity, can I get my money back? Of course imageready would be running under rosetta and thus under emulation and would not be as zippy as cs3 but I guess those are the breaks.
I'll still use cs3 for print work but I really hope the open source alternatives step up soon.

  • PHOTOSHOP CS3 BOOKS

About to make the Great Leap Forward from PE6 to CS3. Advice, on one book to buy - particularly one which covers what CD3 has and Elements has not. Ideally available on Amazon.com but then what isn't?

I'm gonna ditto Dave (mostly) on this. I've been using PS for over 10 years at work and beyond basic and plain photo editing, I didn't really start to explore what PS could do until about 2 years ago.
I've managed to pull off some (what I would consider based on my experience) pretty cool stuff. However, I've barely scratched the surface on what it can do.
I subscribed to the Illustrator forum some time ago because I used that more than any other program at the time and wanted to learn more. I have and actually managed to help a few people along the way. As I started using PS more, I subscribed to this forum as well.
I also check out the Exchange here every once in a few weeks. Some cool stuff there and some really great tutorials on specific tools and procedures. Some actions posted there have actually helped me figure out how to do things I now consider simple.
Book? Dude, there is no magic bullet. I bought two books to help me figure out After Effects, but even I don't expect them to make me a genius with the software. I need a launching pad with AE and that is all I expect those to do for me.
When someone wants to learn Illy, I tell them to learn the pen tool first as everything else is much easier once the pen tool is mastered. When someone wants to learn PS, I ask them to pick one specific thing they'd like to do and learn how to do that first. My experience is PS is more of a 'jump in and play' piece of software. There is far too much it can do for any one or several books to cover.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashing and freezing

I'm running PSCS3 on WinXP using a P4 processor. Lately, both Bridge and PS are freezing and crashing. I've tried to pinpoint what I'm doing when this occurs but can't seem to find a consistent workmode issue. Other times, if I leave the program running without activity for more than one hour, it also freezes.
I also have Photoshop Elements 8.0 installed but don't use them concurrently. Perhaps shared files would cause my problem.
Nevertheless, my initial instinct is to uninstall PSCS3 and reinstall it. But I don't have discs as it was an upgrade download from the Adobe website. So I would need some direction from you on how to effect a new download since it appears that you no longer offer this option.
I have the appropriate serial numbers of PSCS3 if necessary.
An upgrade to PSCS5 is around the corner when my new i7 machine arrives in Sept. So upgrading now is not an option
Hope you have a short-term solution.
Look forward to hearing from you.

  • From FCP to Photoshop CS3 Ext. and back

I want to use an adjustment layer in PS on a clip from my timeline. What's the best way to get it out of FC in a useable form, then pop it back in when done?
    Thanks!
    dc

For output, I would spit out a reference movie. PS seems to open them fine. That way there is no extra compression going out. So, in FCP, go to File > Export > Quicktime Movie. In the resulting pop-up window, make sure "Make Movie Self-Contained" is not checked. Now you have a reference to your original media without transcoding and taking a quality hit. PS should open this movie up fine - does for me, using a ProRes HQ reference movie.
Then, coming back out of PS, I'd just use the setting that matches the destination sequence in FCP.

  • Can Photoshop CS3 Extended and Photoshop CC co-exist on the same system without any issues?

Thanks in advance for any info.

They can co-exist. Whether or not without issues will depend on the specifics of the system, of which you have provided none.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Will Not Install PLEASE HELP TRIED EVERYTHING

I downloaded from Adobe the Photoshop CS3 Extended Trial directly from Adobe. (BTW I am on Vista 32)
The first time I tried installing, ADBEPHSPCS3_WWE.exe successfully unpacked, I successfully transitioned to the Adobe Photoshop CS3 installation, and it appeared to install. After 30 minutes or so, the installer finished and simply said that shared components had installed but the Photoshop CS3 Component install failed.
I always got in the log Error 1935.An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC,version="8.0.50727.163",type="win32",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18 e3b",processorArchitecture="x86"'. Please refer to Help and Support for more information
This, I know, is everyones typical problem.
I turned off firewall and antivirus.
I uninstalled ALL Adobe and Macromedia programs, including Flash and Acrobat.
I used Windows Install Cleanup Utility to remove them.
I downloaded the CS3 Clear from Adobe and cleared at levels 1, 2, and 3.
I created the Administrator account on my computer and tried everything on the Administrator account.
I tried installing Photoshop CS3 with compatibility mode for XP SP2.
    I tried:
    1. Open an Administrator command prompt by right clicking on Start -> All
Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt and selecting "Run as
Administrator" and clicking "Allow" for the elevation prompt
    2. In the command prompt, type the command below
    fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
    3. Reboot the machine
    I tried:
Get command prompt up. It has to be run with admin rights so save yourself some time and run it this way.........Start/programs/accessories/.....right click command prompt and click run as administrator.
Then paste these commands in 1 after the other
    regsvr32 vbscript.dll (THEN PRESS ENTER)
    and
    regsvr32 jscript.dll (AGAIN PRESS ENTER)
I even tried installing in Safe Mode but the CS3 setup would not initialize.
I do not know what else to do. I have CS2 which I will use, but I was really hoping to move to CS3 which is supposed to be better and faster. Does anyone know anything else to do? I am not a computer noob but I am not about to reinstall Vista. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

I was in the same predicament and after spend many hours over several days trying a multitude of things I finally found an easy fix (below):
    ========================================
Assuming you have Internet Explorer 7 go to:
    Tools/Internet option/Advanced
Click the Reset dialog box. This will bring IE7 back to its default settings. You should reboot your computer. After logging back into Windows load IE and let it take you though its initial setup. When you are done close IE and install Photoshop.. This worked for me,,, hopefully it will work for you!

  • Error "Licensing for this product has stopped working" when starting Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended- XP Pro AMD; 2GB RAM

I have exhausted all known options thus far.
I started the Flexnet Licensing Service and restarted the system but the message continues to come up when lanching PS CS3 extended
After restarting computer the Flexnet  Licensing Service stops again and goes into Manual mode. This also happens after a few minutes without restarting.
I also downloaded the Flexnet Licensing Recovery Kit from Adobe Support but the file stops after saying  "please wait for a few moments.. ?"
I changed the setting as discribed for the Flexnt folder but the message continues to come up when PS Extended CS3 is launced.
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401528.html
What else is there to do. Please help me as what I can do so I can continue to use Photoshop CS3 Extended.
    Thank you

I downloaded the clean Script file and followed the instructions from what the Clean Script read Me file described.  The first step said to deactivate. Although I was not able to deactivate because of my original message, I followed the remaining steps.
After using the Clean Script and uninstalling Photoshop CS3 Extended and re-installing it I re-booted my computer. I also deleted the CS3 Application data files.
When I installed PS CS3 Extended the installer does not ask for the serial number on all attemps. I bought a registered copy of PS CS3 Extended. Is there another way to approch this licensing error.
    Thanks.
