Photoshop CS3 brush lag

I have just reinstalled  Xp home  OS system in addition to
reinstalling Photoshop CS3 The brush tool seems to be lagging when doing any kind of work.Especially when
I am using masks and painting in with the brush for different levels of exposures on photos. It is not smooth and it is very hard to get it blended correctly with this problem  I have never had this
problem before. I am wondering if I need to set something or change a setting. Thank you in advance for input on this,

Thank you for responding to my question on the adobe forum, I was having the problem
before I did the new install. Before I installed the new os I  reinstalled Photoshop to see if
that would correct the problem. It did not work and I was having other problems with the computer so I
decided to reinstall the operating system and everything including all of the drivers ect.
At this point I was thinking that it was Photoshop problem and I wanted to see if anyone on the forum had any advice.
Thanks again for you help

  • Photoshop CS3 Brush Smoothing does not work

    Hi,
I need help with the brush tool in Photoshop CS3. All the brushes appear to be pixelated, and I'm unable to draw any smooth lines at all. Whatever I draw comes out edgy and rough.
On the other hand, the eraser tool still produces smooth lines. I tried fiddling with brush preferences, but nothing I do helps: I just can't draw smooth lines with the brush tool, although the smoothing option is turned on.
I'd really appreciate your help, since it's been a couple of days since I was able to draw.

Maybe this will help; I couldn't tell for sure from your description.
Go to Brushes > Brush Tip Shape, and at the bottom of that box slide the slider for Spacing to 0.

  • Photoshop CS4 brush lag with wacom tablet

I've upgraded to photoshop CS4 extended recently and all my brushes that worked fine under CS3 are now with a real lag.
I've installed the latest version of photoshop ( Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 update ) and the latest update for my wacom tablet, but the lag remains.
My computer is a new "24 imac:
    -  2,66 GHz intel Core 2 duo processor
    -  4 GB memory
    -  NVIDIA GeForce 9400
I use my tablet and photoshop a lot, but with this lag it's terrible to draw..
Is there someone who can help me with this or has the same problems ?
    thanks in advance

Glad I could be of service.
Speaking of services, if you are running Vista or Windows 7 (not XP) you should turn off tablet services too. They automatically start if you install a Wacom driver on these Os'es, and they can also cause hiccups and lag in Photoshop CS4.
You have to be logged in with admin privleges.
    Go to Control Panel->System and Security->Administrative Tools->Services
    Open 'Tablet PC Input Service'
Stop the service and select 'Disabled' as the startup type.
You'll know you got it because the annoying 'ripple' effect will go away when you touch the pen to the tablet, and the pop-up keyboard will go away. Of course, if you actually are running on a tablet PC then don't do this.

  • Photoshop CS6 brush lag?

    Hello,
I have had cs6 for quite some time now, and today, my brushes started lagging pretty badly, especially the ones that I love to paint with the most. I have tried:
    - disabling openGL
    - turning off "use graphics processor"
    - allocating more mb to memory usage
    - changing from advanced to basic in graphics processor settings
    - updating
    - restarting
    - increasing cache levels and tile size
    - Trying to see if photoshop cs5 does the same thing (it does)
    - turning off all other background programs
About the only thing I can do to get it to lag less is increase spacing of the brush, which I refuse to do, as the brush looks horrible when doing this. It lags much more when the brush size is large, but the lag still continues even when it's small. I always work in 300dpi because I cannot make professional prints with 72dpi images. I also work in 8.5" x 11". Strangely it hasn't been doing this until today, when I opened it and it gave me a strange error message. All it seemed to have done, however, was reset all my preferences, when I returned to what they were before. I'm getting frustrated and needless to say, I've lost creativity for the day. Here are my specs.
Windows 7 home premium service pack 1.
AMD FX 6100 six core processor   3.58ghz
    8 gb of ram DDR3
    64 bit OS
    AMD Radeon HD 6670
    Asus m5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard
I believe that is all, if there's anything I'm missing or you want to know, just ask.

    ShelbyHughes wrote:

That may be the case (or not), but you cannot rely on Windows update, Micriosoft or a system builder to tell you there are "no updates available"; all of those are very, very often outdated.
Update your video drivers only from the website of the manufacturer of your video card.

  • CS3 Brushed to CS5?

I have quite good collection of Photoshop CS3 brushes but I have not been able to import them to CS 5. How can I do this?

Just put your saved Set from CS3 into /Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Presets/Brushes and it should after restarting the application be available in the Brush Presets Panel’s fly-out menu.
Dragging it onto Photoshop CS5’s icon might also work.

  • Photoshop cs3 and cs4 brush lag /snow leopard 10.6.6

Having occasional brush lag using these apps. Not due to wacom, does same with mouse. Discussions going on at adobe forums. I have ATI 5770 in mac pro 2.8 quad. Don't want to update to 10.6.7 due to font/pdf issues. Spoke to apple person, who couldn't say if the new update had specific fixes for graphics drivers. Anyone having same problems?

?Did you have a PowerMac before, and did you use the Migration Assistant?
How about some normal good system maintenance?
CS3 on a Mac Pro running SL may or may not work the best on mid-2010 Mac Pro.
Your mac by default was set to boot into 64-bit kernel mode. I assume you switched to 32-bit.
How about RAM and storage setup? disabled Spotlight and moved primary scratch to non-system drive?
To elimiate any confusion, change the "PowerMac" to what you have, a Mid-2010.

  • How to fix brush lag in Photoshop CC with a Cintiq 13 HD (on apple's Mavericks OS)?

I bought a Cintiq 13 HD about a month ago and have been using it with Photoshop to do a book cover and to teach concept art at a university.
Everything with Adobe Photoshop was working fine, as far as I can remember/noticed, until this last week or so.
All of a sudden there is a significant amount of brush lag—to the point of Photoshop being completely unusable.
I have spent hours pouring through the web looking for answers, but to no avail.
In Photoshop, however, there is anywhere from a tiny delay to a full 1 second delay—afterwards the brush *usually* catches back up with me.
If I try to jot down a dozen small lines quickly, sometimes Photoshop skips brush strokes altogether, or only puts down one brush stroke "space" or stamp, whatever you call it.
This happens even if I'm using the most basic airbrush with default settings—I'll have a delay, an occasional skipped brush stroke altogether, and an occasional tiny dot where I first started the brush stroke followed by nothing until I lift up the pen and go to the next stroke.
I also use Corel Painter X3 in my work, and there is no lag whatsoever. I jot down a dozen tiny lines as fast as I can and the Cintiq and Corel keep right up with me.
I have tried playing with the GPU and OpenGL to no avail. My GPU drivers are up to date (I'm on a mac, so it's automatic). I've tried changing the Performance Preferences to Basic, Normal, and Advanced (being sure to restart Photoshop each time) without any real solution. (I will say that changing the GPU settings down from Advanced seemed to produce a slightly faster brush stroke in general, but not in the sense that I'm talking about in this post. More of just the regular lag kind of thing that's to be expected.)
    I'm on a Mid-2010 Macbook Pro
    2.53 GHz Intel Core i5
    8 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB graphics card
Using a SSD drive 512 GB free space
    OS X 10.9.5
All Adobe products are completely up to date and I've tried reinstalling the Cintiq drivers.
    I'm out of ideas.
At my university I'll be teaching my class the basics of vehicle design very soon here, and I would prefer to use Photoshop over Painter for this sort of thing, due to its superior non-painting tools. But I can't paint when my brush strokes randomly don't appear on the screen, or lag so much that I can't see what I'm doing if I'm working quickly.
    Thank you for your help.
    Bryan Beus

First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to try to help out. It
    is much appreciated.
The two things that first come to mind are: I have many friends in the
industry who paint solely in Photoshop and do just fine. My computer is
technically "old," but the specs are still just fine—even the graphics card
is the exact same one that is in the new Cintiq Companions (the all-in-one
    computer/cintiq machines).
And, more so, I was painting on it for a few weeks without noticing
anything. A part of me wonders, did I just not notice it until it became
    dramatically worse?
I do remember painting fur, which requires making tons of small brush
strokes over an extended period of time, and I don't remember there being
    any lag.
By the way, I forgot to mention: I've even tried going into the Performance
preferences and disabling the graphics card altogether. No luck. Still an
    issue.
As far as painting at 100%: I do notice an amount of improvement. The one
brush stamp, or space, whatever you call it, issue only happened on the
first brush stroke (every time) and then just once otherwise. The lag was
tremendous—and I compared it to Painter's performance, which had no issues
    whatsoever.
I am really hoping to be able to rely on Photoshop more and more, as its
tools for other aspects of image manipulation are far more robust than
Painter's. And the working compatibility with Adobe InDesign, Flash, and
Adobe Media Encoder are sooooooo useful for speeding up the workflow.
Hopefully we can find out what's going wrong.
I'm truly baffled on this one.

  • The latest update to CC has caused brush lag across all versions of Photoshop.  How can I fix this?

Ever since this past week's update to CC, I have noticed a decrease in performance across all versions of Photoshop I have installed, CS6 and CC.  Many of the brushes I have, both in Photoshop's default and my own custom sets, lag horribly when drawing.  My system had not previously had this issue as far as I can tell.  Just to be safe, I have tested Photoshop on other builds, a macbook pro and a near top of the line PC.  The lag happens across all systems.  I've tried drawing with just the mouse and the Cintiq 12WX and the responsiveness is the same.
For the sake of this case, here are the specs of my main work computer.  All drivers are up to date, as is the OS:
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40 GHZ
    RAM: 8 GB
    Operating System: Windows 8 (64-bit)
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6700 Series
Hard Drive: Samsung 830 256 GB Solid State (where my scratch drive is)
    Monitor: 2 X Dell U2410
I have tried altering the OpenGL settings and disabling them altogether on all builds, including this one. There is no change in the lag of the brushes.
For the sake of complete clarity, these are the specs of the near top of the line PC and the Macbook, which both had the same issues:
    The PC:
Processor: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4 GHz, overclocked to 4.4 GHz
    RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600 MHz
Operating System: Windows 8 (64 Bit)
Graphics Card: 2 X EVGA Nvidia GTX 670 4GB SLI
    Hard Drive: 2 X Samsung 840 Pro 256 GB SSD, Raid 0
    Monitor: Apple 27" Cinema Display
    Macbook Pro:
Processor: Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz
Operating System: OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion
Hard Drive: Western Digital 500GB 7200 RPM
    Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 630M
I've also tried completely uninstalling and re-installing Photoshop CS5 and CC on my work computer, which still did not solve the issue.
I am a freelance artist and this sudden lack of performance is putting a cramp in my deadlines and possibly in my income stream, if I cannot solve this issue quickly.  Please advise!

I have some new info on the issueI thought I'd share with you.
First of all, I've installed Photoshop CC on my SurfacePro (Windows 8) and do not have the lag issue there. It's very similar hardware to my MacBook Pro. So the issue must have something to do with my MacBook.
After a lot of tinkering I discovered that it is my 27" Thunderbolt Display that is causing the brush lag. When I unplug it and only use my built in 13" screen the brush lag is gone. Aha!
I tried every available option in the Performance section but nothing helped. Again, Photoshop CS5 with attached Thunderbolt Display doesn't have a brush lag issue.
I'd be interested to know everyone else's setup who is experiencing this problem.

  • PhotoShop Cs5 to Cs3 Brush issue

    Hello.
Previously I was using PhotoShop CS5 for my personal art design, however i had to switch back to CS3 for various reasons. Having devoted a lot of time and care into my CS5, I saved up my
swatches, styles, brushes, etc..... so I wouldn't lose all my work. I spaced, however, and saved the CS5 brushes with the rest of my generic brushes in the process of a mass save. I no longer have access to CS5, and when I attempt to load the .abr into my CS3, it gives an error.
"Could not load the brushes "D:\etc\etc\etc\Brush Set 1.abr" because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop."
Is there anyway to get in there and delete those specific brushes, recover the ones I'm after......or.....anything?
    Thanks

Call Customer Service. You will need Photoshop CS3 media as a start as Adobe no longer provides media for older versions.

  • A possible fix for brush lag in Photoshop CS6.

I was getting brush lag for a few days after installing CS6. every 4 or so normal brush strokes, the brush would start to lag. And after a few lagging strokes it would go back to normal and then repeat itself.
The first thing I did was delete the workspaces that I never use (I doubt that fixed the problem).
Second thing I did was turn the cache levels to 1 and set image previews to "never save" (found this tip online, didn't fix the lag problem but I still kept those settings anyway).
The third thing (and what I believe fixed the problem) was going to "performance" in photoshop, clicking on the advanced settings for your graphics processor and turning the drawing mode from advanced to basic.
I never had to do this on cs4 which is why it took a few days of tinkering around to fix the problem. But if anyone else is having this problem go ahead and give it a try. Hope it helps.

Apple is not immune from releasing flawed drivers.  They get them from ATI just like PC users do.
Assuming your CPU power is sufficient you would not expect to see a difference in operation.  Certain operations, for example color management transforms, are executed in the CPU rather than the GPU in Basic mode.

  • Spaces & Photoshop CS3 tool flickering (Marquee, Brush, Gradient)

While running Photoshop CS3 Extended, if I use Spaces in or out of the Photoshop Space, many of my tools (marquee, brush, gradient, etc.) will "flicker" between the tool's cursor and the Finder's cursor. It isn't just cosmetics, it's functionality too. This bug forces me to restart Photoshop, as it is impossible to get any work done.
I have narrowed it all down to certain circumstances though, and I have a work-around to temporarily prevent the flicker, although that isn't to say I don't mind the annoyance. If, instead of using Spaces in or out of Photoshop, I command-tab to a program in another Space and back again, the cursor will not flicker. However, once the flicker starts, Photoshop must be restarted to correct the problem.
Say I have my Finder windows open in Space 1, my E-Mail in Space 2, and Photoshop in Space 3.
I can command-tab to or from any of those and be unaffected. I can also use Spaces to go from my Finder to my E-Mail, and then command-tab back to Photoshop, and still be unaffected. It's only when I use the Spaces quick-switch keys or Spaces Grid to get to or from Photoshop that my Photoshop cursors flicker.
Hopefully if someone else with this problem reads this, they can temporarily avoid this issue until Apple or Adobe corrects it. If anyone has a similar problem, or better, and answer to this problem, please reply.

Well, that's interesting! Here I thought the problem with my CS1 was just that it was too old, running in Rosetta and all, and would be fixed when I get my Xmas treat of CS3. Wonder if that means when the fix comes from Apple it will also fix the same problem in CS1? Of course, by then I'll probably have CS3.... Thanks for posting this, I would have been mighty annoyed to have plonked down my 200 bucks only to discover that I had the same bugs.

  • Brush lag in CS3 and CS4

Got a new 2.8 mac pro, 10 gb ram, 10.6.6, both versions have intermittent brush lag. Size of brush not a factor. Replaced prefs, didn't fix.  Not an issue on old G5, running tiger 10.4.11. I'm sure this is an old topic, but I've looked around and no one seems to have a for sure fix. Did wacom runarounds. Assuming it's a snow leopard thing. I know there is another os update.  Anyone have ideas or fix?

Redid prefs in both versions, have one plugin which I turned off, and that didn't change things. Real intermittent, can be working for a while and it will happen and then not for some time. These were both new installs. I did the font validation thing, which I hadn't heard of. IT people I work with advise not to update to 10.6.7, they've found problems, and are not doing the update in an ad agency, so I'll follow their advice on that. Weird that it occurs in both versions. Would be nice if a Adobe employee had some feedback, other than the guy that responded to me. Seems he's a professional responder. Had no issues on old computer using tiger and cs3. I've done a google search and come up with people with same problem and no solid solution.

  • Layer effects cause severe brush lag in Photoshop on Yosemite

Has anyone else noticed that when you show a layer effect in PS CS6 on Yosemite there is a severe brush lag?
Even when the effect is NOT on the active layer, hiding the effect (such as a stroke effect on a layer) allows the brush strokes to appear realtime.
    This wasn't happening on Mavericks.
    Photoshop CS6 13.0.6 x64
    Mavericks 10.10.1
iMac Intel Core i5, 2.66 GHz
    Memory:    16 GB
    Wacom Cintiq 13HD

    Thanks for the reply.
It's not an Intuos3. It's a Bamboo. Drivers are latest.
Like I said, everything works fine in 32-bit version. Brush is perfect, pressure sensitivity is great.
x64 it's awful. Start drawing and there's a lag before it actually gets drawn, which means I'm missing loads of brush strokes and it can't keep up (although it's the beginning moment that's causing the most grief). Of course there's no pressure sensitivity either so it's absolutely useless.
I tried the steps you mentioned and there was absolutely no difference. Something is wrong with the x64 version.
I can't be hassled to attempt to figure out what the issue is. I can't be bothered with using the x64 version when the 32-bit one is completely fine - it's not like I'd be getting any advantages from the x64 version anyway. I'd like to be able to just get rid of the x64 one and keep the 32-bit version, or have 32-bit as my default and never have x64 even launch.
Is there any way I can do that?
    Thanks
