Photoshop CS3 cannot save files (something happened)

Hi, all has been fine for a long time but all of a sudden I cannot save anything. Doesn't matter if I open a jpg file, or start a new file in PS and draw something, when I hit save or save as I see a dialog flash and disappear and the focus has gone from the main PS window and cannot get it back. The dialog is NOT in the tasklist, so I cannot alt+tab to it, so the only way to quite PS then is using the windows task manager!
Anyone encountered this before? I've not done anything between the last time I used it, and as far as I am aware it has not updated (but might have done).
Windows XP PRo, Dual Core Intel, 2GB RAM (tried restarting windows, only 600MB RAM in use after restart).
Thanks
Henry

>Anyway, the next time it happened I hit esc and had control again. The odd thing is that cleared whatever was the issue, because the save popup now works alright.
that's good henry, but it suggests you didn't successfully clear the preferneces as that would reset the location of the dialog as well.
hey bob levine, i've been hearing this over and over, that esc will cancel a hidden dialog (that we already knew) but that it will reset next time shown. seems like maybe something has been added to the code to make this happen as it never did before, but this is like the 3rd or 4th time i've read this...
maybe something should be added to the start of the faq on "dialog box is missing". like:
]"First: hit ESC and see if control returns to the program, try the operation again to see if the dialog position has been reset.
]If not continue to try the other options."

  • Photoshop cs3 cannot open files

When I try to bring in a file and click on open in photoshop cs3 run on windows xp, the directory of files will flash for a second then disappear and photoshop freezes up.  I have to then go to the task wizard to end it and when I try to end it it says the program is waiting on a response from me.  Any idea how to fix this?  I have had photoshop installed on this computer for and running fine for almost 2 years.  It has been acting up for about a week.  I tried doing updates, repairing,  unistalling and reinstalling, running virus scans, cleaning up disk space and defragmenting.  Nothing has worked.  Any help would be appreciated.

The first thing that needs clarification is: are you opening the PSD in Illy or are you placing it? Opening is not recommended. Placing is okay (if it's a layered PSD, someone else will need to address that).
The second you already know: CS3 (at least) does not do well in any 64-bit OS, Vista or otherwise.
The third is: what is the size of the file you're trying to open/place. I've been unable to place any file 200MB or more (forcing me to do in PS what I'd rather do in Illy) although that may have had something to do with physical dimensions of the file I was trying to place.

  • Cannot Save File.  File is Locked

Good morning.  I just downloaded the Cloud CS6 and am working with Fireworks. I saved a PNG file then later went back to modify and now cannot save the file.  I am trying to save as with a png extension but keep getting the message cannot save file.  File is locked.  I have read several of the forums but can't seem to resolve by myself.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

did you create the file, or is it coming from a the shared folder, and was (perhaps) created by another user?
I ran across a similar error with a (text edit) file created by another user.
Opened just fine, but when I edited it, then selected Save,
    it failed to save.
Selected Save As... and used the same name and location, the file as expected.

  • Photoshop CS3 error saving files - Could not save ... because the fileis already in use or was left

I have a problem with Adobe Photoshop CS3 that only started happening last night. Heres a description of the problem.
When I try and save a Photoshop file, I get the following error message:-
Could not save (filename). because the file is already in use or was left open
I have rebooted my computer, rebooted our server, un-installed & reinstalled Photoshop and also done a system restore, and I still have the problem. (The system restore actually caused huge problems I got the error message The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall or call customer support, except I wasnt able to reinstall or uninstall the product. The computer just would not run the installer. I had to undo the system restore.)
I can do Save For Web with no trouble and I can save files to the same location with every other Adobe product installed in the Web bundle, just not Photoshop.
We have 2 machines here with an identical set up (hardware and software) and the problem is only on one machine.
Even though Photoshop says it cant save the file, its actually saving the file in the following format:-
~psX.tmp where X is a random variable, either characters or numbers.
I have to manually open My Documents and rename the file to filename.psd so I can access it again.
Short of reformatting my computer (which Im not keen on doing because it will mean several wasted work hours and I will have to pay our IT people to come in and hook me back up to our network), how can this problem be fixed?
I have also Googled the problem and the only help I found was a suggestion to search for a psicon.dll file and rename it. This file does not appear anywhere on my system, so I'm at a loss.
I have contacted support about this issue, but thought it was also worth while to ask here at the same time.

I'm having similar problems with not being able to save files after editing them (and giving them a new file-name, obviously) in Photoshop Elements 4.0. I get an error message saying (for instance): "Could not save as (whatever I'm trying to name the file) because the file is already in use or was left open". Then I see a .tmp file (that I can't open)
I did a search and found that the file was being saved twice, once within Photoshop (where I'm working with it) and also in..
    "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Temporary"
I'm assuming this is the problem, but if you have any clue as to why is this happening and what I can do about it, I'd welcome any input. I've been using PSE-4.0 for years, and this problem just started cropping up. The only (cumbersome) way around this problem has been to just make my edits (in PSE-4.0) and do a "save" under the original file name, then go into explorer and rename the file. So, in short, I cannot do what I've been doing for years, editing a picture and saving it (renamed) in the sane folder (or a different one).
I can "see" the .tmp files in PSE-4.0, but they won't open.. but they will in JASC.. odd..
    Thanks-
    Bob

  • Photoshop CS4 "Cannot save due to an end-of-file error" Help

This problem occurs daily, probably 15-20 times per project. I take on normally 3-4 projects per day, so you can see how annoying this is. Basically when I'm saving, I get a dialogue box that says "Cannot save your file due to an end-of-file error" or something to that extent. I would love to resolve this, this problem is persistent and it's driving me out of my mind I'm saving to a network, if that has any correlation. Thanks in advance
         Chris

This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Photoshop CS6.1 Cannot save file as .tif-program insists on .pdf

On Mac Pro using OS X attempt to save completed file as .tif.  Photoshop insists on saving it as a .pdf.  None of the format shown in "Format" field link up with actual extension.

Hi. I have used the PS CS6 trial and an Epson v500 scanner to scan a 6 by 4 image at 6400 dpi using File => Import => From image device. The file was saved as a pdf and opened automatically in CS6. I was satisfied with the image and wanted to save it as a something other than a pdf since pdf is not really a widely accepted image format for archiving. The image size came out to ~ 6 GB. I went to Save As and the only options I see from the save as format drop down box were PSD, TIFF, and PS Raw. I tried Tiff, but it told me it cant save files past 4 GB. IM not interested in the other 2 formats it allowed me to save as. Any ideas? Why cant I save as a JPEG or BMP when something ahs been scanned as a PDF?
As for plugins, I downloaded the official PS CS6 Mac plugins and placed them in the appropriate plugins folder.
Are there file size limitations with respect to saving a copy when you have opened a file as a pdf?
Its not that there is anything wrong with the pdf format, its just that I cannot use the scanner plugin for importing an image from PS6 to save as a Tiff or JPEG under 6400 dpi and 48 bpp settings (this problem was discussed ina nother thread).
    Any ideas?

  • Cannot save file after opening in photoshop

I have a file selected in my lightroom library and I select photo -> edit in photoshop. I am selecting to edit a copy of the file. A copy is created and opens in photoshop. I make some adjustments and when I try to save it, I get an error message:
Could not save "file name" because the file is already in use or was left open.
I tried closing lightroom before saving, but it did not help.
All these in lightroom 1.3.1 and photoshop cs3 on a mac.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance

Hi...yes I can do a file Save As... but only as a different name, it will not replace the current name (says file open, same as before). If I do Save As and use a new name of course, I am then left with the original PSD file and the new one (which is not in the LR catalog, must be imported.)
The files are not open in bridge, it isn't even running.
    Thanks

  • Cannot save file because it is open or in use by another program

Windows XP, (or Vista, or Version 7, they all do it) CS2-3 or 4, all combinations have the problem.  Even the Macs.  Today was the worst I've ever seen and I'd love a solutions.
I'm editing in WindowsXP in CS3 and need to send a JPEG version to my client for an approval.
Flatten file, make sure any saved selections are deleted.  Select File / Save As/ and select JPEG instead of PHotoshop.  Select the level of compression..hit OK, and photoshop won't save the file "because it's already open, or another app is using it.
Try the same thing but wait a while before hitting the final OK (this works more times than not)  not today.
Try changing the filename to Test.jpg Nope
Try changing the filename to A.jpg Nope
Try changing the filename to Test File.jpg Nope
Try saving it as a TIF  That worked.
Open the tif and try saving THAT as a jpeg.  sometimes it works, somtimes it doesn't.  If it does I can just rename the file.
Now all of this is going on while my client is looking over my shoulder wondering what sort of booger-eating moron I am.  I'm wondering too of course.
And of course I've got a handful of ~***.psd files that I need to delete.
Now the newest and strangest twist is that when I get home from the office, and connect my removable drive and start the computer, before Windows 7 starts up, the system starts running a chkdks on the drive and scaring the daylights out of me with all of these dire issue it's finding.
Odd that Photoshop will disown a file it just this second created, but at the same time will let you delete a file in Bridge while it is clearly open in Photoshop.
I've seen the same threads for In Design, and Illustrator going all the way back to version 7 (before the CS series)
In my little world it seems high time for a soslutions.  Anyone got any clues they'd be willing to share?

Mr Sullivan...Happens on all three of my systems.
1...Windows XP with CS3 writing to my traveling drive
2...Windows 7 64 bit, CS4 writing to the same drive
    3.  Windows XP CS4 writing to an internal laptop drive.
I'm doing a test shot today.  I don't think it will involve the same level of Photoshop dependence that the paying job did, but I'll see what problems persist.  The only change would be a few days rest, and running CHKDSK on the suspicious Drive (which I'll replace this weekend...takes a while to format a large drive and transfer all the contents)
I can't tell you how much I appreciate everyone's ideas.  Thanks thrill seekers.

  • Cannot Save File because of disk error

I selected 4 RAW images in Lightroom and chose the Merge to Panorama In Photoshop. After the file was created and I cropped it to my desired dimensions I tried to perform a simple save. I was asked what name to give the file and I went with the default settings and clicked OK on the Maximize Compatibility dialogue but I get an error that said "Cannot Save XXXXXX.PSD because of a Disk Error.
There are no details and not other options to find details. The drive these images came from have permissions set to Read and Write so I don't know what the issue is.

Your OS has reported a disk error - which usually means that there is a serious problem with the disk.
Photoshop is just passing along the error it got from the OS.

  • Cannot save file in word for mac 2011

When I tried to save a word file, the system keep telling me "this file is being used by another program, please save again" then the file name turned into something like "Word Work File L_230232796.tmp" and I have to choose another name for the file. Besides, sometimes the new file cannot be opened correctly. How can I solve it?

perhaps ignore a little the standard search microsoft forum response above for the moment, the problem may lie with apple, as I doubt these problems occurred with snow leopard and previous, as its the new OSX file versioning autosaving features that seemed to have cause allot of issues not just with office, my clients cant stand the lack of "save as" for instance, this new autosave features also has a hidden ability to lock files older than a certain age hidden within time machine preferences this might and I say "might" be the issue in question although "blocked" is more unusual in contrast to to the more common "locked" as an error, follow the following points in order >
1: just check this article to see whether it may help with your issue.
    http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/how_disable_os_x_lion_file_locking
2: do the standard updates software routine to both office and osx you can, ie to 10.7.5 for lion for instance.
3: do the standard disk utility permissions repair, although this sadly only affects, files other than user folders, user folder permission repair can be done but is more complicated.
4: some with this issue recommend turning off time machine backups completely, as it also seems to interact with this issue, test this ?
5: check with docs of different files sizes to establis whether its file size related and respond back to the thread
6: if related to dropbox make sure its fully updated, aagan try saving in a different file location and test respond back to the thread
7: Note also lion and mountain lion have changed and tightened quite a bit the permissions and user control over OSX and file locations etc, for the endless over perceived security risks out there, meaning for instance lion will no longer let you save files to root without putting in your password etc, so Might I suggest also making sure that where your saving your word documents is within the user folder temporarily ? and see whether that resolves the issue. ie the file saving location in question maybe the issue.
8: Sadly if you recently did an "upgrade to Lion", some Software issues may also resolved by reinstalling the said software afterwards, negating the point of an upgrade install, but anyway … as that can sometimes resolve issues with software from a Lion Upgrade.
further :  if this is related to a temporary file save location within the application package as some software makers seem to do ? then permissions repair may have resolved it or it may require a microsoft update to the office suite if so, I thought doc temp files as regards microsoft documents were saved alongside the original file ? could be a temp elsewhere though perhaps in the Microsoft folder in the user>library>application support maybe the issue stems from permissions there ? a search can reveal how to repair the permissions on the user folder which cannot be done through disk utility as standard, though i doubt this will resolve it. OS X lion and up and the new autosave feature, versioning and file locking time machine backups and the lack of "save as in some application have created allot of issues for allot of people you are not alone in these issues.

  • Cannot save file.

I cannot save a httpd.conf file using the MS Notepad [ text editor]. I am trying to coinnect PHP with the Apache Web Server. Thanx in advance to anyone who helps me.

Occasionally. Usually for me it's when the same document is also open in Preview (which usually happened by accident if I double-click to open, and for some reason Preview thought it should open that file) and sometimes when the image is imported into an open Quark document. Closing the offending file usually fixes it. But I've also had it happen randomly when I couldn't figure out why it thought the file was open anywhere.

  • Cannot Save Files to Desktop

User is running Photoshop CS 2 on a Mac Pro 3ghz machine. He gets and issue where he intermittently (but every day) cannot save Pshp files, MS Word Files, Indesign flies to the destkop. His workaroung is to save to USB drive and then copy files to the desktop.
I looked in other forums about this issue and they relate to permissions. Funny thing is I have rebuilt the permissions and even put a clean build on the machine and re-installed Adobe CS.
What permissins are associated with Pshp files tat would prevent "Save" or "Save As".??

    Hi Paul
Have you checked that the permissions are correct for the user's Desktop folder? (Go to his home folder, select the Desktop folder and select File>Get Info.) He should be the owner and have Read & Write permissions.
If that's not the problem you could try creating a new user account to see if this solves the problem.
