  • Photoshop CS3 freezes on edit preferences performance

I know this is the Lightroom forum, but I could not get any help on the photoshop windows forum, and there are a ton of experts willing to help here, so I hope you will bear with me - thanks!
I have been having performance problems with photoshop CS3, where all types of activities become slower and slower. I tried to open the edit > preferences > performance dialog and this causes photoshop to immediately freeze without showing the performance dialog and photoshop eventually becomes "not responding" every time.
Is this a known issue? I have not been able to find any reference in my searches. I have updated the latest patch to CS3.
    Here is my system info:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 10.0.1
    Computer: DellXPS710
Video: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS and Nvidia GeForce 7900GS
    Operating System: (Vista home premium)
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:15, Stepping:7 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2
    Physical processor count: 4
    Processor speed: 2394 MHz
    Built-in memory: 2813 MB
    Free memory: 1515 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 1659 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 55 %
    Image cache levels: 6
    Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\
    Temporary file path: C:\Users\Rory\AppData\Local\Temp\
Photoshop scratch has async I/O enabled
    Scratch volume(s):
    K:\, 465.8G, 452.8G free
What I have tried so far:
    - Uninstall, run CS3clean script at level 1, reinstall CS3
    - Reset the preferences by deleting the preference file as per adobe documentation
    - I have only one printer installed, no network printers
    - Turn McAffee off (I think - it seems complicated to turn off)
    - Confirmed I have the latest nVidia drivers
    - Turned file indexing off on the scratch drive
    - In msconfig, I have turned off all startup items and system services, to no avail.
    - Run in safe start mode - THIS WORKED. As you can see in the specs I moved the scratch drive while in safe start mode, but this did not help.
Therefore I appear to have a conflict somewhere. All my other software, including Lightroom and Bridge are working fine.
I am going to test my memory next but it is unlikely to be the culprit since the safe start worked. Apparently Microsoft is releasing the Vista SP1 tomorrow, so I will update Vista.
Also, I would like to see if the nvidia drivers are causing the problem, but I do not know how to turn them off and use a generic video driver. If anyone can help of this please advise.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would be most grateful.
    Rory

    >Also, I would like to see if the nvidia drivers are causing the problem, but I do not know how to turn them off and use a generic video driver. If anyone can help of this please advise.
I am not sure that the actual Nvidia drivers cause problems; however, nview desktop manager was known to cause problems, but it only exists on Xp. If you really want to remove the drivers on Vista, then goto Control Panel -> System And Maintenance. In left panel pick Device Manager and in the devices screen expand Display Adapters. Right-click on the display adapter name and pick Uninstall. You will then need to re-boot.
Adobe also has an article on Optimising Photoshop on XP and Vista. In case you haven't seen it here is the reference:

  • Photoshop cs3 freezes in leopard 10.6

    Hey everyone,
First post here. Up until about a week ago I've been running the Adobe CS3 suite under OS 10.5 with no real problems (except the usual freeze when running too many!) After installing the 10.6 update, photoshop would freeze every time I attempted to use a tool on the image (eraser, brush, etc).
I then read on another separate forum to do a reinstall and backup of OS 10.5 and to NOT upgrade to 10.6. I did this and now photoshop works fine - it works again. Only problem is I'd like to have the new Safari browser and the other features with 10.6.
Apple, do you know why photoshop CS3 doesn't work with the latest OS upgrade? Will you have a patch for this soon?
    Please help - thanks!

@ Templeton Peck - Jeez - what crawled up your b* - this guy has a problem which directly relates to an update of an Apple product. His CS3 was working prior to the 10.5.6 update and now its not.
Third party or not this is an Apple forum and therefore a good resource for problem solving issues.
Might I suggest in future you direct more effort into helping people with problems rather than ripping them for seeking help.
    +With that in mind...+
I have a similar problem with CS3 on the Mac, try resetting the preference as stated above. Repair your permissions too. It is worth noting that occasionally I have issues with CS3 on my MacPro freezing when I have Microsoft office programs open. It seems to be more prevalent when doing something complex - smart layers or moving images from one PSD to another. The software hasn't crashed (although it says not responding in the force quit box) it has merely frozen. Depending on how complex the artwork it normally comes back after a short while and starts responding again. I am led to believe that it is due to Microsoft Office not being optimised for Multi-core processors. It happens possibly a couple of times a day but there is no hard and fast rule to it happening.
In your defense - I always start here for anything related to my Mac as normally the people here are very helpful (Peck not being a good example), before heading out on a bigger search. (And Especially as the Adobe forum is woefully hard to find any information on easily)
    Good luck...
    Hope this helps...

  • Photoshop CS3 freezes

While using Photoshop CS3 and performing various actions ie cropping/dodging/burning in particular, my computer freezes and even using ctrl/alt/delete doesn't help. Any suggestions please?

    Hi,
May be your system configuration is not compatible for CS3.
Also you can try changing the preferences values under Edit>>Preferences>>Performance.
    Hope this helps,

  • Photoshop CS3 Freezes Up

When I launch Photoshop CS3, it freezes up (along with my whole computer) as a window pops up saying "Active Content Removed".  The only way to unfreeze everything is to use the Task Manager to stop the Photoshop process.  Alt-F4 doesn't kill the window; nothing appears to.
    Any thoughts on fixes?

  • Photoshop CS3 freezes on 24" iMacs

I've installed Photoshop CS3 on 2 new 24" iMacs.  Specs are 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB Ram iMacs, with Leopard and all updates to Leopard and Photoshop.  We are simply copying 3 photos, from storyboard psd files.  I then paste them 1 at a time into a new document and save them as jpegs. Sometimes it freezes in 15 minutes, sometimes in an hour.
When it does freeze, it never comes back.  It usually freezes during the saving process. I have to force quit and log off and back in, because it will not completely force quit.
I've completely removed it, deleted preferences, fixed permissions, reinstalled it and does the same thing.  We have it installed on many Macbook Pros and do not have any trouble.

Because this is happening on two machines, it tells me that its some kind of software or maintenance problem - and extremely unlikely to be any hard drive, or serious issue with the machines.  See if you can identify what is causing the crashes, I guarantee its not Photoshop.
    Here's some possibilities…
Faulty RAM - did you upgrade the RAM on the machines to 4 Gig? Make sure you bought a reputable make if you did.
Someone in your studio has done something unique to these two machines, maybe installed something ill-advised. Or set Photoshop or system preferences incorrectly. For example Photoshop/Preferences/Performance/memory usage should NOT be set any higher than 90%. Also Scratch disk should be set correctly and not to anything like external slow drives or servers. Also beware of bad 3rd party Wireless drivers.
It usually freezes during the saving process - download Onyx http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/onyx.html - from here run cache cleans, maintenance scripts - AS WELL as permissions repair.
As an experiment make sure your only Photoshop is running when the crashes happen.

  • My Photoshop cs3 freezes whem open archive

I have a problem with my photoshop cs3, the last day when  I go to open archive the program freezes and not work and i can't close...only crt/alt/sup and close...what can i do? i try to reinstall the program and repair photoshop but not works, but when I'm out of photoshop (program closed or open..) and press right button , "open with...photoshop cs3" this it's the only way what to open archives for photoshop...thanks for yours possible solutions.

What archives? If you are referring to ZIP, then that's an operating system thing. Most likely in that case, your temporary directory is full. Use CCCleaner or similar tools to do a little housekeeping.

  • Photoshop CS3 Freezes When Opening/Creating New Files

My System: Mac OSX 10.5.8, 2.1GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    My Problem:
It seems to be that if I download print drivers Photoshop will freeze anytime I want to open or create a new file. This problem arose when I downloaded a new print driver (unfortunately after deleting several others to ensure the problem was fixed). I was able to delete the print driver resolving this issue, but now it seems to be that anytime I download a new print driver, even though these previous print drivers had been on my computer before it freezes PS again. These previous drivers had worked perfectly fine when I had PS on my system before and I can't understand why all of the sudden now PS won't work with them.

Because of a bug in the printer drivers.
Photoshop asks for basic information ("name of printer",  "default page size", etc.) when creating a document.
If the printer driver has serious bugs, then it may hang or crash at this point.

  • Illustrator & Photoshop CS3 Freeze When I Try to Open a Document

I have CS3 installed, and just since yesterday, when I open photoshop or illustrator and then try to open a document (just from file-open), the entire program freezes and won't let me click anywhere. I have to ctrl-alt-del to get the program closed. I have restarted my computer numerous times. If I don't have photoshop or illustrator open and go to my computer and find the file I want to open and double-click on it, it will open that document. But while that document is open, if I go to file-open, it then freezes again. Anyone know how to fix this?

That is I take it Pages '06? Which is a bit long in the tooth.
I'm trying unsuccessfully to find the minimum requirement for OSX 10.6, but yours may not be compatible with Snow Leopard.
Your contacts are no doubt using either Pages '08 or Pages '09 which as later versions can open yours but you can not open theirs.
Updating from Pages '06 is a no brainer IMHO.

  • Adobe Indesign and Photoshop CS3 Freezing after trying to save file

    Hi
I was using both Indesign and Photoshop yesterday with no trouble. Out the blue whenever I tried to either save a file or generally use any of the functionality within the File menu the dialogue box quickly appears then fades and the software freezes. Its doing this in both Indesign and Photoshop.
The IT department logged on using their administrator info and both packages appear to work fine it just seems to be once I log in using my user account.  We have tried reseting preferences etc.
Any help or advice would be welcomed.
    Thanks

You have a stored invalid folder reference and since it can't be restored, the apsp crash on file dialogs. Have your IT department sift through the registry and clean out the relevant MRU sections.

  • Photoshop CS3 freezing when I create a new adjustment layer

I am working on a Macbook Pro. Have plenty of memory/RAM/scratch disk space.
When I try editing an image (which I have exported from Lightroom) PS freezes as soon as a new adjustment layer is created. When there is a second layer, I am unable to return to the original layer. Tool switches automatically from default "move" tool to "eyedropper" and PS freezes.
Have been through all the archives and can find no help. Also just re-installed PS from the disk and still have the same issue.
    Thanks for any advice/help.

Usually just checking the system display configuration and sorting that out will make it work.  Photoshop tries to make sure the dialogs are displayed on an active display, but has to trust the OS about what displays are active.
If you ever get completely stuck, then resetting Photoshop preferences will reset all dialog locations and EVERYTHING ELSE - so backup your favorite settings and presets before doing a complete reset.

  • I can't open a file i was working on yesterday in Photoshop CS3. Please help!

It keeps telling me :  'Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop'.  I can't view my file at all and it's very important. Help!!

Could you have mis-named the file and it is actually some other file format than the suffix indicates?
Otherwise the file may be damaged and your hopes of salvaging it depend on your back-ups or recovery software …

  • I cant print custom sizes in photoshop CS3. Please help

I am on my Imac G4 using mac os x 10.4.11. I know that it is not my printer that is the problem. I have been told that I should upgrade to 10.5.x, I have also purchased a new CS3 because I dont have the original copy so I cant reinstall it. The trouble that I am having is that when I try to print custom sizes, the printer defaults back to 8.5x11. Only in photoshop does it do this. Has anyone else had this problem or know what I can do to fix it? I would really appreciate it. Thank you for your time. I will check back until this is resolved.

    Russell,
Because your screen shots (they look like you actually shot them with a camera! ) don't show the whole Print Preview panel, I'm not sure at what stage you're losing the paper size, but it's pretty clear that by the time you invoke the printer driver, it's royally screwed up.
    At this point I would:
    • delete the printer from your printer list (in the Printer Setup Utility),
    • re-install a fresh copy of the latest printer driver from the Epson site,
    • then add the printer back in.
This is the kind of consistency you should be seeing (Command Click on each thumbnail to open the full-size image in a new web browser tab) [NOTE: this is CS4 running in Tiger 10.4.11):
