Photoshop CS3 Mac-Files are rewriting themselves... Help!

Hello Everyone,
I'm hoping someone could shed some light on an issue I've been having over the past few days.
So I'm in photoshop doing my usual adjustments, when I go to save the file it saves a totally different image than the one I'm working on. So the thumb of the file isn't the actual file, it's a totally different one.
Today I was working in InDesign and when I opened a project (That I preflight and packaged at the end of the previous day) InDesign said that there were missing and modified links. I thought this was strange. So when I updated the photoshop files in the InDesign document, the files were completely different ones than the day previous. >:S
I don't know if this makes sense to anyone, because I'm sure confused. If anyone out there has some insight, that would be awesome! Thank you for taking the time to read my forum.
Kind Regards

You have given us no details. My guess is you are looking at Bridge in CS3 which had a spurious thumbnail and preview bug that was never fixed.
If you open the file in Photoshop or InDesign, you will see it is in fact the correct image; only the thumbnail and the preview are wrong.
To correct this, change your Bridge preferences to UNcheck High-quality Previews, quit and relaunch Bridge, then use the Tools menu in Bridge to Purge the Cache for each offending folder, one by one. DO NOT use the global Purge Cache command in Bridge preferences.
Unfortunately, in CS3 you have to choose the lesser of two evils: either spurious thumbnails and previews or soft previews.
CS3 will not be fixed. This particular bug was fixed in CS4.
You are not addressing Adobe here, we're all users just like you.

  • Opening Photoshop CS3 psd files in Photoshop CS2 (Mac Tiger 10.411)

Is it possible to open Photoshop CS3 psd files in Photoshop CS2? After I created them in Photoshop CS3 I reset the preferences to maximize compatibility "always", then I resaved all the psd files. Do you think this will work? I have to open them in CS2 tomorrow at work...

Also, some old features may have changed in the new version. Specifically, I had some CS3 files from a client that had smart objects that did not open correctly in CS2.
As I recall, CS2 was able to open a flattened version of the file, just not fully layered with smart objects.
I actually had CS3 on my laptop, just not on the tower I wanted to work on, so I opened the files on the laptop, rasterized the smart objects, and saved. After this, CS2 opened the files with layers.

Photoshop CS3 Mac: Crashes on startup?
    Hi all!
I just today installed CS 3 Web Premium on my G5 (Dual 2.7GHz, 2GB RAM, Mac OS 10.4.9, all updates installed). The install seems to succeed, and I've activated the suite, and all the other applications launch without a problem. But Photoshop doesn't. It shows the splash screen and gets as far as "Initializing Suites" when it drops off the face of the earth, and I'm prompted to send a crash report to Adobe (done).
I've tried restarting the Mac, re-installing just Photoshop, and even creating a new Admin user and trying it there, but Photoshop still crashes in the same place. So it's apparently nothing in my user account or just a randomly mucked-up install.
I did a search here for "initializing suites" but nothing came up, and even Google found just one other report of a CS3 crash at exactly that point, so a) it's not common, but b) it's nevertheless not just me. Hmm.
Has anybody seen this? I'm funkified...
    Pres

    Ramón is exaggerating.
First: find the uninstaller in the Applications/Utilities/Adobe Installers and TRY to run it even though you already deleted the application.
If it won't DO anything, go to Macinosh HD/Users/your username/Library/Preferences and delete the Adobe Photoshop CS3 Settings folder (and its content) PLUS the Adobe Photoshop CS3 Paths file in same location, PLUS the com.adobe.Photoshop.plist file in same location.
    Then try to reinstall again.
If that doesn't work, run the cs3 clean again. Note that it is a script and that it asks you questions that you have to answer to and type in replies to for it to do anything. I fyou donät interact with it it won't do a thing. Note that it might clean out more adobe files than you would wish for.
    There are instructions here
for how to unisntall the public beta of Photoshop CS3 but you might be able to follow those also for a non-beta. There are no instructions for manually removing Photoshop CS3 at the support center as far as I can see (on the other hand it is next to impossible to find anything on the support pages by doing a search.. search for Photoshop CS 3 for Mac and get articles about Illlustrator or CS...).

"iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing." Help!!
Hello everyone, I have looked throughout this forum but couldn’t find anything similar so I am posting this in the hope of someone helping me out.
I have encountered some problems with iTunes (most recent edition) after doing a Dell update which seems to have knocked something out with iTunes.
Whenever I hit the iTunes icon it refuses to run and iTunes displays the following message:-
"iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes."
I don’t want to reinstall itunes from fresh as this will mean losing all the records and playlists that I have spent the last 3 years using.
I first want to try by getting my old one back by any means neccessary.
Like I said this problem first happened after a standard Dell update.
I do have the option of doing a restore with the Dell or using Windows Vista restore itself but I fear I do not have enough disk space.
On the Dell update I can restore to settings of a previous date which might bring iTunes back but when attempt to do
that I keep getting the following message,
"Not enough free disk space to back up"
Around this time I am given a lists of what will be backed up and this readsas follows:-
    Pics 2.87gb
    Music 71.72gb
    Videos 330.57mb
    Documents 219.11mb
    Email etc 203.64mb
How do I free up disk space to do the back up? An external hard drive?? If I baIs there anyway of getting a previous version of iTunes back?
My drive information is as follows:-
    C Drive: Very little room - red warning - 5.67gb of 138gb
    D Drive: 6.34gb of 9.99 free
Do I have too much music?
Ideally don't want to reinstall itunes as is a ball ache, and it has all the playlists etc so if there is
a way of restoring and getting back iTunes either via restoring system to the prior date when iTunes was ok.
C drive is really full now. How can I clean this up and make more room? Do I need to add memory? Are all the songs
causing the problem? What advise can you give me? Please help.
    Thanks!

    Nodders:
I've recently had exactly the same message as you, after iTunes updated to 10.1.1.4. First of all, I checked the *My Music* folder to make sure it was still there - it was. (I do have a back up of that folder anyway!)
I then chose the re-install iTunes option and a pop-up box asked if I wanted to uninstall iTunes or repair it. I (obviously) chose repair and I'm pretty sure what happened was that the install process simply re-installed a damaged (or missing) file. It far too quick to be a fresh install. My library was intact.
So my advice(for what it's worth) is take the re-install option and then repair option. I can't guarantee anything, but ...
By the way, after I experienced a recent hard drive failure, I decided to invest in a 1TB external drive to back up my iTunes library and personal files because it's a much easier way of backing up than my previous method. Luckily, I only lost a small recent part of my library, but it taught me a lesson. Back up regurlarly, using a larger hard drive than you are using on your computer (which allows you to keep the most recent and +next most recent+ back-ups, and don't rely on Windows to do the backing up. Find a suitable backup piece of software. (My hard drive came with s/w built in.)

  • Photoshop CS3 opening files painfully slow on a Mac

We're having an issue here at work where Photoshop CS3 is very slow in opening files of any size on our Macs.
We're running 10.5.8 on 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon MacPros with 3 of them having 8 gigs of ram and my machine running 12 gigs.
I've tried doing a bunch of research on the issue, but all I can find about it has to do with the issue on a Windows machine involving the network/default printers. I've tried deleting both our network printers and adding them again after a restart with no luck. We've even tried deleting the Photoshop preference file along with the Adobe Mediabrowser preference.
If anybody has any thoughts on how to fix this (aside from upgrading to a newer CS), they would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, I think I found a little work around that so far, for the past hour or so is working good. Files are opening up a lot faster.
What I did was create a virtual default printer following instructions I found Adobe's site...
    1. Open System Preferences, and select Print & Fax.
    2. Choose the + sign to add a new printer.
    3. Choose IP.
    4. In the Protocol pop-up menu, choose Line Printer Daemon - LPD.
    5. In the Address field, type in localhost.
    6. After Generic PostScript printer displays in the Print Using field, click Add.
    7. Close out of the Print & Fax preference or Quit System Preferences.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/set-default-printer-print-center.html
Once I did all that, I had to go into the Preferences and delete the Photoshop and Mediabrowser preferenses and then restart the computer. Hopefully this fix sticks, but if not, I'm sure I'll back to see if anybody has any other ideas.
Thanks for all the help guys, I really appreciate it.
    EDIT
Well, it's been a few days and it looks like I may have spoke too soon on the above fix. Photoshop seems to be slowly reverting back to the problem.

  • Photoshop CS3 crashes all the time - Please help!

    Hello
I didn't find any answer in the forum.
I work with Photoshop CS3 Version 10.0.1. on Mac Powerbook 10.4.11.
Photoshop quits all the time, no work possible anymore. It quits when I want to open a file or when I want to safe an new file (message PS unexpectedly quite).
The trouble (maybe - actually I am not sure) may started after I updated all Adobe program. There were some messages popping up that not everything was updated properly.
Anyway I reinstalled Photoshop 3 times and CS3 completely 2 times and the last time I run the clean up program as well. No change.
Please help! Thank you very much.
    Rosa

    Rosa,
    >So, you are also suggesting that I don't upgrade but install new.
NEVER, ever use the "upgrade" option.
Rather, do an "Archive and Install".
    >What do I have to take care of beside of making a backup from everything?
    Routine maintenance is imperative.
I still advocate Repairing Permissions (with Apple's Disk Utility) before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.
I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.
I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.
This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that's OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don't pretend to know why others believe otherwise.
Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) seldom helps.; Try it anyway, though.

Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.
Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.
If you don't run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.
Here's an excerpt from the Apple tech doc
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
    Also, from:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978
The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
    NOTE:
There have been comments to the effect that Apple "fixed" this in 10.4.2 and later versions of the OS, but I have not been able to verify this to my satisfaction. The reference in the 10.4.2 release notes are far from explicit on this subject.

If you have DiskWarrior, run it regularly too.

  • Photoshop CS3 - Opening File - Toolbar Freezes

    Hi,
I have Photoshop CS3 on a Mac OS X. When I open Photoshop, click File > Open, then click on the image I want to open, Photoshop opens the image but everything is greyed out. I can click on the side tool bars and they are no longer greyed out but the top bar freezes. The "file" tab stays highlighted. I can close the image, but I can not close the program. The entire bar across the top is frozen.  I can edit the photo but since the tool bar is frozen I can not save the file.If I navigate to a different program, such as Firefox, the frozen Photoshop tool bar stays at the top of the screen. I can not restart or shut down my computer becase the tool bar is covered up by the Photoshop tool bar.
Also I have the installion CD. When I try to reinstall it ask me to "Relocate". It will not let me click on the installion CD. I can not get pasted this step or I would just reinstall CS3.
Is there anything I can do about this problem?

  • EXIF plugin for Photoshop CS3 MAC version

    Hello everyone,
Question: Does anyone know of an industry-standard, reliable EXIF plugin for Photoshop CS3 for MAC? I already have an EXIF tab in my File > File Info tab, but I specifically need a plugin that reads Shutter Actuations from an image. I need to know how many times a camera I just bought has been fired.
    Rambling Backstory:
I just bought a used Canon 1d Mark II on eBay, and I think it may have been misrepresented in the auction. The seller claimed that the camera only had around 29,000 shutter actuations.
She based this number on a program called "Cancount." When I received the camera, I took a test shot, and attempted to download cancount. Unfortunately, I ended up on some German web site, which asked me for 13 euros to download it.
Instead, I downloaded the free, and much more detailed Simple EXIF reader for Mac. This program said the camera was closer to 160,000 shutter actuations.
    Here's the screenshot:
    http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3295/2681473080_c22f82591f_o.png
All I want to know is which program is more reliable, Cancount or Simple EXIF reader. OR, does anyone know of an industry-standard EXIF reader that everyone agrees gives a reliable shutter actuation count? Thanks everyone.

Maybe i am looking at something different here, but i usually check my frame count under photoshops file- info ,and once there i go to advanced, and under the fourth arrow called http-exif, i can see my frame count. it says aux-image number. not sure if that will help you.

  • How do I get rid of the Photoshop window my files are docked into?

all files opened in Photoshop CC are 'docked' or nested in window called' Photoshop Window"? How do I break the relationship, so my files are independent from that window?
Mind you, 'Float in Window' option is NOT gonna cut it because while seemingly independent, when the 'Photoshop Window' is closed - ALL my documents close as well. Can you help?

In CS6 is at the bottom so most people miss cause they think alphabetically like me. Though at all possible CC did something with this.

  • Photoshop on mac - file copied to ntfs corrupt ?

    Hi!
We encounter this problem on a school campus :
Students work on photoshop on macs, they work locally on a file (because we know directly on the server is not recommended); when class is over, they copy the file over to their network folder which is NTFS.
Some files get corrupted when they open it up the class after, filters get black or weird stuff happening.
    Ever see this happen ?
    thank you

    Sorry.
We are under PS 13.0.6. Mac osx 10.9.5.
Users log with the AD accounts and home directory are created locally.
They work on a project with files saved on the desktop, at the end of the class they drag the psd file to their home directory on the network, which is on a windows server (NTFS file system). That server is 2012.

  • Mac files to PC transfer help request

    Hi,
I have a Power Mac G3 Beige and would like some assistance/advice in how to transfer my file to a PC.
    Here's some additional information:
    I'm using OS 9.0.4. It's a 4 Gig hard drive, and I've 102 MB free space available.
The computer had some damage. As a result: the floppy disk drive no longer works (clicks continually), and the available memory randomly "reduces" to 0 if used to long (I usually just delete files and after a while, the memory returns, but never goes too far over 100 MB). DiskTools fixed the memory issue somewhat (I can at least go a couple of hours without losing all memory, whereas before I could rather last an hour before running out of memory).
The computer also uses an external Iomega SCSI Zip 100 Drive.
I've a number of files on the computer, about 20 cds, and about 30 100 MB zip disks. The files aren't organized properly (there are dupes, here and there). A lot of the files relate to websites (I'm a web developer).
What I want to do is somehow transfer all of my files to my PC; combine them with my PC files; organize them; and then back up all of my files (method TBD). My initial problem is getting the files to the PC.
Here are the options I've considered:
FTP: I can try using the internet to ftp the files, but that'd take a long time, and I've several gigs worth of files. Additionally, for some reason, transferring files from Mac to FTP takes much longer than PC to FTP (a file that's transferred on the PC in 5 minutes, may take 20-30 minutes via the Mac).
*ZIP DRIVE:* I'd like to put the files on the zip disks and transfer things that way. However, I don't know how to get my PC to recognize my zip drive. If that's possible, this would be a route I'd like to explore.
NETWORK: I have a copy of Dave, which in the past I've used successfully. However, the big problem I had was that the filenames of the Mac files were renamed once transferred to the PC, resulting in some files now working. I renamed the files I wanted to work - and things worked fine. However, I'd rather not have to rename everything, or even have to check, as there are a lot of files. I just want a straight copy.
*CD/DVD BURN:* I don't have a cd/dvd burner for the Mac. If there's one that anyone can recommend for use with OS 9.0.4, even if it's an old piece of hardware, I'd definitely consider this route.
*FLASH DRIVE:* One problem I had years ago (when I was using this computer regularly, is upgrading. My recollection is fuzzy, but I think the reason I didn't upgrade my OS is because to do so would be to erase my hard drive, and I wanted to back up my files first...which goes back to the main topic of this email. I mention this because I wouldn't mind hooking up a flash drive to the Mac, transferring files there, then transferring files to the PC. However, I think I'd need to upgrade to a higher OS, and I do not want to erase the drive until I'm sure I can get the files. And there's also the issue with my random memory outages. I can probably free up another 100 MBs by deleting some programs, but that's about it. There's not much on the computer. Yes, that's odd, it should be somewhere around 3 GIGs, but the damage screwed up the computer somehow. I never could determine where the memory went to.
The above are just the ones I've considered. I'm sure I'm missing some others.
I'm willing to invest some money in making this happen, but I'd like to keep it low, as this would be a _one-time transfer_. I haven't decided as to whether I'm going to trash it afterwards or donate it yet, but I definitely plan to no longer use it.
Considering the hurdles above, any help/advice is appreciated - and would bring me one step closer to purchasing a new Mac.
    Thanks.
    -Stephen

Wow. Okay, i've done this before myself with large amounts of data, by several means. Here's how:
    1. I used Dave 3.1, passing the ethernet cables through an ethernet hub (an actual router is not necessary). I don't recall having a filename issue with Dave but i do recall it working quite well. I'll bet there's a setting or something in Dave regarding filenames, e.g. select Joliet or 31 char instead of ISO 9660. I cannot believe Dave won't transfer 31 char filenames.
    2. More recently, i regularly use my 2 GB USB flash drive to xfer files, and there is NO filename issue. Of course, you need USB which means a PCI card for the Beige G3 if it doesn't already have one. OS9 only supports 31 char filenames, and these are always transferred just fine to Windows via my Windows-formatted flash drive. OS 9.0.4 should handle most USB drives. If not, you can upgrade to 9.1 or 9.2.1 for free--without erasing or otherwise messing up your startup drive. However.... if the computer is having problems, it might be a bad idea to try to upgrade the OS, especially if all your data is on the same drive.
    3. Many if not most IDE CD/RW drives will work with Toast 5+ in OS9. Many will even work with Toast 4. In fact, i don't think i've ever found one that didn't work with Toast 5. I'm not sure about OS9's built-in Disc Burner software because i never use it. Toast is too good.
    4. A Zip drive would be an excruciatingly slow way to do it but the filenames do arrive intact. Of course, the disks have to be formatted for Windows.
    5. I'm not sure about OS9's "Personal Web Pages" but i've used Netpresenz and it works great. That might be the best way to do it but i'm not sure how it would work if you're doing this at home and only have one internet connection. Doesn't quite seem to make sense. Why not just direct connect with Dave..?
Btw, the one method you missed was this: open each file on the Mac with Hexedit, and copy down all the 1's and 0's onto a piece of paper (it may take several sheets). Then go to Windows, open Winhex, and type in all the 1's and 0's. Then give the file the same name as it had on the Mac, and voila! Do this for each file you want to transfer. Shouldn't take more than about 500 years.
    Gluck.

  • Import iTunes Library, but not files from PC to Mac - files are on extHDD

    Hi everyone.
I have bought a Macbook Pro to replace my old PC. All my music-files are on a NAS-server.
Now I need to move my PC iTunes-library-file (with covers and playlists) to the Macbook, but how?
I have copypasted the library.xml to the mac, but can't figure out how to chane the path in the XML-file.
Is there a piece of software, that does the trick easily?
    Regards
    Jan

    Hi Jan,
I have the similar situation. Got a new Mac and transferring iTunes library to the new Mac. The iTunes is in the external drive. But it sees iTunes (10.1) didn't recognize the XML file while I choose "Add to Library"
What I did was: I change the iTunes library (library.xml) to the external drive. Then I use Import Playlist feature. My library was importing along with the play count and the rating.
Then I import the real playlist file to finalize all import.
I hope it works for you if you haven't fixed it.
