Photoshop CS3 speed?

Hi all,
I wonder if anyone can help me?
RE: How do I set up my G5 Quad for optimum Photoshop speed?
I have an Apple Mac G5 2.5 Quad. One of the very last of the Power PC Tower Macs. I have two internal drives fitted. One 500GB runs the Applications, the other 250GB is partitioned into two. One half is used for File storage, the other is used as a Photoshop scratch disc. I have 4.5 GB RAM installed.
I'm running the latest version of Leopard and Adobe CS3.
So how can I can I get PS to run faster on large multi layered artwork / illustration files that are about 1.5 GB in size?
Am I doing all I can?
Would more RAM help?
Would the scratch disc be better off not partitioned?
Would it it be best to have my files in the 'Home' folder, on the applications hard drive and NOT have the scratch disc partitioned?
Would I be better off putting the cash towards a new Mac Pro instead?
Any thoughts and advice kindly received?
K

Similar machines Doug although mine is the first-shipment 2 GHz version and you have the snazzier 2.5 model.
I have these plug-ins enabled but I have 5.5 GB RAM and I believe that "Force VM Buffering" is recommended for machines with more than 4 GB RAM if you work on large files so it might, or might not, improve performance on your machine.
There are two flavours of VM Buffering and this Readme explains which one you should use:

Try it and see whether it helps or not.
>Bigger Tiles Plug-In
The Bigger Tiles plug-in causes Photoshop to process image data in larger chunks. This will reduce the overall time to complete many operations, especially on computers with more than 1 GB of RAM installed. Bigger Tiles will also reduce the responsiveness of the application in some situations.
Bigger Tiles definitely improved redrawing times for me with my original video card and still works with the 256 Mb VRAM card that I installed recently although I haven't tried running with it disabled.

  • Photoshop CS3 freezes on edit preferences performance

I know this is the Lightroom forum, but I could not get any help on the photoshop windows forum, and there are a ton of experts willing to help here, so I hope you will bear with me - thanks!
I have been having performance problems with photoshop CS3, where all types of activities become slower and slower. I tried to open the edit > preferences > performance dialog and this causes photoshop to immediately freeze without showing the performance dialog and photoshop eventually becomes "not responding" every time.
Is this a known issue? I have not been able to find any reference in my searches. I have updated the latest patch to CS3.
    Here is my system info:
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 10.0.1
    Computer: DellXPS710
Video: Nvidia GeForce 8600 GTS and Nvidia GeForce 7900GS
    Operating System: (Vista home premium)
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:15, Stepping:7 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2
    Physical processor count: 4
    Processor speed: 2394 MHz
    Built-in memory: 2813 MB
    Free memory: 1515 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 1659 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 55 %
    Image cache levels: 6
    Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS3\
    Temporary file path: C:\Users\Rory\AppData\Local\Temp\
Photoshop scratch has async I/O enabled
    Scratch volume(s):
    K:\, 465.8G, 452.8G free
What I have tried so far:
    - Uninstall, run CS3clean script at level 1, reinstall CS3
    - Reset the preferences by deleting the preference file as per adobe documentation
    - I have only one printer installed, no network printers
    - Turn McAffee off (I think - it seems complicated to turn off)
    - Confirmed I have the latest nVidia drivers
    - Turned file indexing off on the scratch drive
    - In msconfig, I have turned off all startup items and system services, to no avail.
    - Run in safe start mode - THIS WORKED. As you can see in the specs I moved the scratch drive while in safe start mode, but this did not help.
Therefore I appear to have a conflict somewhere. All my other software, including Lightroom and Bridge are working fine.
I am going to test my memory next but it is unlikely to be the culprit since the safe start worked. Apparently Microsoft is releasing the Vista SP1 tomorrow, so I will update Vista.
Also, I would like to see if the nvidia drivers are causing the problem, but I do not know how to turn them off and use a generic video driver. If anyone can help of this please advise.
If anyone has any other suggestions I would be most grateful.
    Rory

    >Also, I would like to see if the nvidia drivers are causing the problem, but I do not know how to turn them off and use a generic video driver. If anyone can help of this please advise.
I am not sure that the actual Nvidia drivers cause problems; however, nview desktop manager was known to cause problems, but it only exists on Xp. If you really want to remove the drivers on Vista, then goto Control Panel -> System And Maintenance. In left panel pick Device Manager and in the devices screen expand Display Adapters. Right-click on the display adapter name and pick Uninstall. You will then need to re-boot.
Adobe also has an article on Optimising Photoshop on XP and Vista. In case you haven't seen it here is the reference:

  • BRIDGE THUMBNAILS in Photoshop CS3

I have the Photoshop CS3 and I can´t see the thumbnails pictures on the Bridge I can only see the NEF folders with all the metadata information, but no images at all. What can I do?
    This is my computer:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.5 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 6 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz

    Jose
Do you have quick thumbnails checked or high quality? I use quick.
Using your description (see only folders and metadata), and looking at my screen in Details here is what I see.
When I click on Details I see a single column of thumbnails with metadata on the right side. In your current situation do you get any thumbnails? If I have the folder tree displayed I get just the icons, title, and date created and date modified.
Could it be you are just looking at the directory tree rather than the folder with pictures in it?
If nothing seems to work I would suggest you reset preferences by holding down Ctrl when starting Bridge. You will get a reset window. Choose all 3 options.

  • Slow folder item previews when opening files in Photoshop CS3

Can anyone advise me on the best way to improve the speed of previewing folder items/contents when navigating to items through the photoshop CS3 file finder? For some reason, one of my studio Macs, running Mac OS 10.4.1, and PShop CS3 takes ages to build a preview list of all the items in folders on our server (IBM RAID running RedHat).
Also experiencing similar issues just previewing items in column view through the MAC OS Finder windows.
Is there any remedy for this slow appearance of folder contents?
    Thanks for your help!

This sounds like a server issue, and how it interfaces with that Mac. Do you have this issue with sifting through files stored locally on that machine?

  • Photoshop CS3 extremely slow opening files

Recently my Photoshop CS3 Extended has been taking an extremely long time to open files of all sizes as well as to create a new document. It takes several minutes to open files. While Photoshop is attempting to open, the program is unresponsive.
    Photoshop version 10.0.1
    OS: Vista 64bit
    PC: HP tablet
    Ram: 4G
    Processor: AMD Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile ZM-86 2.4GHz

That's good advice from John there Liz and if you really lose patience, uninstall the whole thing and re-install it. You should get your original speed back then - I'm assuming that all your other programs are running normally.

  • My Photoshop CS3 goes very slow/choppy when I have a selection made.

    Hello,
My Photoshop CS3 goes very slow/choppy when I have a selection made, with those little moving lines indicating the selection (the lines that look like walking ants). When I'm adding to the selection, it's fine again, because the "ants" aren't moving, same with when I hit Q to enter Quick Mask Mode--as long as the "ants" aren't moving, my Photoshop isn't slow. Is there any way to fix this? To either speed up Photoshop or to stop the "ants" from moving, and simply allow selections to be indicated by broken lines, but not moving broken lines?
    Thanks

  • Help configuring Mac Pro for Photoshop CS3

Hi all, this will be my 1st Mac and I'm hoping to get the proper configuration for using the Mac Pro with Photoshop CS3.
Since I'm working with large photos (20" X 24" and even larger) and layers my main concern is speed. The Apple store lists five items in their suggested configuration, any suggestions for what upgrades I need to make will be greatly appreciated!
Start building your Mac Pro with our suggested configuration:
    * Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors
    * 1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
    * NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
    * 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
    * 16x double-layer SuperDrive
    thanks!!

Well, with a $US5K budget you should be able get a decent configuration. From the Apple Store I would order…
    Mac Pro 2.66GHz 1GB RAM / 250GB HD
    ATi Radeon X1900 XT
    Apple 23" Cinema Display
    Bluetooth & Airport Extreme
… which will cost $US3,726 leaving you plenty for your RAM and drives. I would add AppleCare although you can buy and activate this any time within your standard 1 year warranty period so by buy later you spread your costs.
Now, with RAM I would either buy 4 x 1GB (giving you 5GB and costing approx. $US400) from the manufacturer of your choice else 4 x 2GB (giving you 9GB and costing approx. $US850). The most cost effective is probably the 4 x 1GB as you'll most likely not want more than 8GB RAM in any case.
For your drives you have quite a bit of choice although you need to decide if you want to go RAID and what you're going to do with your backup and/or clone. Photoshop users require fast, small file, disk access which the Maxtor MaxLine Pro excels at and at $US99 each they're quite the bargain. Even though Seagate has chosen to discontinue this drive they're still the best boot/Photoshop drives in the 500GB size.
However, looking larger (750GB or more) such as the Hitachi Deskstar/UltraStar, Western Digital SE16/RE2 or Seagate Barracuda 7200.11/ES.2 You'll find better performance overall simply through their larger sizes. Not to mention you'll be buying current model drives. Be aware that you should buy drives specifically for RAID use if you wish to go that way. It's not a good idea to use desktop class drives in RAID sets hence the two model choices for each manufacturer.

  • Photoshop CS3 memory release problem

    Hi,
I have been working on a large group of DNG's and I'm noticing that as I proceed through the edits my computer memory seems to be 'not releasing'. Example: Select photo, process it in RAW, open it in Photoshop CS3, edit, save and CLOSE the image. My computer memory does not seem to be refreshed when I close the image and eventually, after several images, I have to close the application to retrieve the memory. I am running on a PC Vista with 3 gig of memory (max my operating system will work with).
If anyone has suggestions, I would appreciate them.
    Thanks,
    J.

It won't use only 75%, either. It
    i allocates (i.e. reserves)
75% at opening if prefs are set that way, but will use all the RAM that the system has available if necessary. That's the reason you don't set ridiculous memory allocations of 90-100% in prefs (unless you have more than 2GB of RAM, which is PS current maximum) - there's no free RAM for the system to use after Ps launches in that case, so only virtual memory remains for the system and everything will slow or crash.
Once PS has used all available RAM (not only its allocated RAM), then it will start writing scratch - which is also set up and waiting at opening. I'm assuming PS was set up this way for initial speed - if it has RAM already allocated at opening it will not have to waste processor time calling for RAM.
It took me a while to get around the concept of all this, but I think I understand it now - it is in fact very well thought out for maximum speed and stability.

  • Cannot Run OR update Photoshop CS3 on MacBook 10.6.2

My previous computer was running Tiger.  Its motherboard died and I had to get a new computer.  I'm now on a MacBook Pro  5,3, Intel Core 2 Duo, Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz, Memory: 4 GB.
When I first noticed an issue running Photoshop CS3 on this new computer, I reinstalled the program from the CD.  I still had issues -- it won't stay 'open', or I can't open files, work with them and save them.
The Version Cue 3.1 updater ran this morning and wouldn't intall the update.  Error message:: "The update cannot be applied to the product.  Please re-install the product and try again.    I'm not sure what else to do since re-installing Photoshop CS3 from the CD didn't help, and I don't have access to the computer I had it running on previously.
    Anyone have any suggestions? Fixes?
    Thank you!
    Mary

It almost sounds like a Rosetta problem, but Snow Leopard starts Rosetta automatically for apps that need it, and if it isn't installed, it prompts you to download it the first time it needs it.
I'd say beyond uninstalling, get rid of all the preference and application support files from both your user library and the Mac HD library, THEN reinstall it.
A lot of times bad preferences remain behind and affect the reinstalled software just the way they did when it first went bad.

  • Intel iMac lagging with Photoshop CS3

Every time I use Photoshop CS3 with my office's Intel Mac, the computer slows considerably and every other active application become sluggish. It's excruciating to say the least!
I thought Photoshop CS3 WAS "optimized" to fully use the possibilities of the Intel chip, but it's more and more looking like an Adobe FAIL to me…
What can I do to speed up the computer when using Photoshop CS3 (besides NOT using Photoshop, which I just can't do in my field of work).
    *Here's the Mac's general specs:*
iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (aluminum iMac, bought in July 2008; iMac ID: iMac8,1)
    2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    6 MB L2 Cache
    1.07 GHz Bus Speed
    Mac OS X 10.5.7

    Remy,
    1. You really ought to have more memory. Your iMac will support up to 6GB (yes, 6). See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/6400DDR2S6GP/ for $168 USD + shipping. My wife has the same machine with 6GBytes in it.
    2. Restart your machine and launch Activity Monitor. Click on the System Memory tab in the lower part of the window and observe memory usage as you launch your normal programs along with Photoshop. Page outs is a very important metric. If it stays at zero (mine is at zero after 3 days and I have 6GB on my iMac 7,1 and I have both Photoshop and Illustrator running) then you have enough memory.
    3. The other thing to do with Activity Monitor is to click on the Real Memory column and see how much each program is consuming. Maybe you have a program you don't know about that is a memory hog. For example, Firefox suffers from memory leaks and can grow quite large over the course of a week. Photoshop also is not good about returning memory to the pool. I just looked at my memory usage and Photoshop was consuming 417MB even though I have not used it since yesterday. Quitting and relaunching PS sent the memory usage down to 88MB.
    4. Both my wife and I run Photoshop CS3 every day (typical file size is 3-6MB) and it is very fast for us.

  • SSd & Photoshop Cs3 or what?!

Planning to configure the ultimate Macbook pro 17" for Ps Cs3.... Kinda confused!
What is the ultimate SSD config for photoshop Cs3 - I´m planning to have an 256SSD combined with the expresscard slot with an SSD as scratchdisk, Will this have a significant speed boast?
Or is 320Gb 7200 the way to go....
    ( And,can Photoshop Cs3 only use 4 Gigg memory, or 8 Gigg? )
As you can see, i am rather confused - any help greatly apprechiated!

All I know about SSDs and Photoshop is to remind that SSDs are faster for reads and random writes, but many are slower than spinning hard disks for sustained writes, which Photoshop will require. SSD may not be an overall advantage at this time.
    ( And,can Photoshop Cs3 only use 4 Gigg memory, or 8 Gigg? )
Photoshop CS3 will use 3GB directly and take advantage of OS X to use the rest of your RAM as a scratch disk buffer (the linked article still applies to CS3 and 4).

  • PhotoshopNews: Adobe Photoshop CS3 at a glance!

    http://photoshopnews.com/2006/12/14/adobe-photoshop-cs3-at-a-glance/
Even more content out there now on the home page of PhotoshopNews.com

I haven't been able to download CS3 yet, but the Martin Evening pdf (thanks for the link!) has what looks like a piece of great news buried in it:
"For example, before you first had to create an empty new document with the exact pixel dimensions before you could place an image (such as a raw file) as a Smart Object. With Photoshop CS3, you can now place a raw capture file as a Smart Object layer in a single step."
If I understand this right, it means that the functionality of the old Dr Brown Place-a-Matic script is now available from Aperture. We can -- or this makes me hope we can -- send a RAW from Aperture to PSCS3 for editing, and then Place the same image, perhaps twice, as a Smart Object, edit away, and when we Save get the whole edited image back in Aperture without going through the Finder.
I used to use this (from Bridge) all the time to double-expose RAW shots: adjust the sky to one exposure and the ground to another, masking to get both into the final image, all without messing with the pixels of the RAW image. I've missed it. Whoopee.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Image Processor not converting files to sRGB Profile

I have been experiencing a problem with Photoshop CS3 Image Processor no longer converting profiles to sRGB.   It converts all of the files from Camera Raw to JPEG, but not sRGB as well.  I used to be able to batch convert an entire folder of RAW images to JPEG, sRGB through the Image Processor.
My Photoshop CS3 Working Space is Adobe RGB (1998).  I need to convert an entire folder of images selected in Bridge to sRGB working space in order to publish a photo album from one of the on-line publishing companies.  I can open each individual Camera Raw file in Photoshop and convert each to JPEG, sRGB, but this takes a tremendous amount of time.
The following procedure has worked for me in the past, but for some reason no longer works:
I select the images in the desired Bridge CS3 folder.  Upper tool bar, "Tools" > "Photoshop" > "Image Processor".  In Image Processor:
Section 1 - ""Process files from Bridge only (11)"  Whether or not I place a checkmark by "Open first image to apply settings", it makes no difference in the outcome.
Section 2:  "Save in same location"
Section 3 - "Checkmark by "Save as JPEG, quality 12".  Also a checkmark by "Convert Profile to sRGB"
Section 4 - Checkmark by "Include ICC Profile"
I replaced my iMac one month ago and reinstalled Photoshop CS3, but this Image Processor problem had been occurring even with my old computer.
Not sure if you need this information:
I'm currently on Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
Processor:  2.93 Ghz Intel Core i7
    Memory:  8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3
I don't know if it's related,  Photoshop CS3 on my old computer was running in Rosetta.  I don't know if it's running in Rosetta now, the name does not appear when Photoshop boots up.  How do I get it to run in Rosetta again?

Heh heh heh.  It's always true that we find the answer just after making public our problems, which in turn we did after trying to find the problems ourselves for hours.
Thanks for following up with the answer.
