Photoshop CS4 32-bit Default

Has anyone found a solution for choosing what version of PS CS4 will open when double clicking a PS linked file (aka PSD, TIFF, etc)?
It's really irritating me that I have to open the 32-bit version first just to make sure the files open in the correct version of the program.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure, in
Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Associations, that each file format is correctly associated with the correct
.exe program file.

That's just not right!

  • Photoshop CS4 32 bit settings work for 64 bit version?

Anyone know if Photoshop CS4 32 bit settings work for 64 bit version?  I just installed Windows 7 x64 and I want to use my backup Photoshop CS4 settings from the 32 bit version.  Will there be any problems?
Also, it seems that since I'm on 64 bit Windows 7, the installer forces me to install the 64 bit version of Photoshop CS4, although the 32 bit version is optional.  Are the 32 bit settings stored in a different location from the 64 bit version?  Or will both version use the same settings from the same place?

I think you are misunderstanding me. The sharing happens via the user home directory (C:\Users\[You]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe ...). 64bit specific settings will be denoted with an X64 in their file name, 32bit settings will be without any extra tags. Beyond that, the programs do not access each other's program directory, which shouldn't be required in the first place, as the default templates are the same for both to begin with. You can of course also copy your brushes and presets to the program directories, but then you will have to worry twice about keeping them in sync.

  • Photoshop CS4 64 bit crashes with Color Picker

    Hi-
I have Photoshop CS4 64 bit and 32 bit applications Version 11.02 installed on a Win  7 machine.
In the 64 bit version when I pick on the color picker or any swatch - the program crashes and freezes-up and I have to use the task manager to quit the program.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried re-installing the program, which rolled it back to version 11.0 but the problem persists - but ONLY in the 64 bit version. The color picker in the 32 bit version works just fine.
    HELP!!
    Thanks-
    Cathy

OMG!! I feel soooo stupid! I discovered the problem.
I recently installed a second monitor and had been working with it - but today it was turned off.
The color picker was opening on THE SECOND MONITOR!! So it appeared on the first monitor that the program had stopped responding!

  • How to deactivate Photoshop CS4 as the default browser for image

I wanted to deactivate Photoshop CS4 as the default browser for image. Now everytime when i want to open BMP(bitmap) file it always use photoshop CS4 to open the file. It takes a longer time to load the bitmap picture when using photoshop CS4 to open.
    Can anybody help!
    thank you

Mylenium is implying just that.  There's a checkbox that reads something like [ ] Always Use This Program to Open This File Type.
I do know that in Photoshop CS5 in Bridge there's a preference dialog that allows you to set file associations as well...  I'm not where I can test CS4 at the moment.  There may be such a dialog also in Bridge CS4.  Open Bridge, choose Edit - Preferences - File Associations if that subcategory exists, then find your file type and change the association.
Yet a third possibility is that if you have a viewer program like IrfanView that you'd like to associate with the file type, then the viewer program likely offers a menu through which you can indicate you want that program assocated with particular file type(s).  I have instructed IrfanView to make itself the viewer for all Image types, and that works well.

  • Unable to close Photoshop CS4 (64 bit) - Process in Windows Task Manager remains open

    Hi everyone,
    I've just upgraded to CS4
When i launch Photoshop for the first time, it's running normally.
But if i close it, it seems to be closed, but a photoshop.exe (64 bit) process is still remaining in memory and i can't launch
Photoshop until a kill the first process.
The computer is is Windows Vista 64 bit with 8GB of RAM and a Ndivia Geforce 9400 GT graphic card.
The problems remains if I disable OpenGL or reset prefs.
I only have the 64 bit application installed and for the rest seems fine.
    All help is welcome !

I assume you reboot the computer after removing the buggy software?
I would do a search on your computer for the software and see if there are any remaining folders. If so remove them and reboot.
This is a good free removal software. It is called CCleaner and it will remove any junk remaining on your computer. Give that a try. It also has a registry cleaner too.
Up to you if you wish to use the registry cleaner. May help because there might be something left over from removing the software that is triggering the problem still.

  • Photoshop CS4 64 bit  - Clone Tool does not work (and other tools)

    Hello.
I have been using Photoshop for many years going back to v5.  I had used Design Prem Suite CS4 for the past year on an XP machine.  All worked fine.  I recently moved to WIndows 7 (64 bit) to get the add memory usage.  CS4 installs both 64 and 32 bit versions on Windows 7 64 bit.  So far all good.   Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.  I am at a dead end and really have no confidence in getting Adobe's help.
My tools are working erratically, especially the cloning and healing tools.  I can't even use Photoshop in its current state and this has been going on now for weeks, no help from Adobe on my lates support ticket post.
I canonly say that the clong tools is all over the place including but not limited to:
    * When I sample and then click to stamp, lines shoot across across the image as it I clone a line not a single sample area. These stamps can be the length of the enite image.
    * when I sample, then click to stamp, some the stamps occurs on some other part of the image.
    * when I sample and the click to stamp, nothing happens. I have to click several times.
    * when I sample and then click to stampl, the prior location I stamped has the clone applied
There are more, but this is to just give an example.
    Notes:
    * I have trashed preferences at least 20 times and the problem immediately reappears
    * The problem happens in both the 32 bit and 64 bit version of PS running in Windows 7 65 bit
    * The problem occurs with OpenGL tuned on and off
    *  I have installed the latest PC patch 11.0.1
    * I have updated my latest NVidia drives. They are current.
    * I uninstalled Photoshop (kept the rest of Suite) and that did not work, and the same problem reappeared.  I am not uninstalling the complete suite but the reinstall has error (that is a separate issue)
    * I have triple monitors running off 2 GeForce 9800 GT cards.  These worked flawlessly before upgrading to the Windows 7 64 bit configuration.  When I upgrades, I replaced the processor, motherbaord and moved to 12 GB ram. The graphic cards are the same.
    Other tool issues:
    * I have similar problems with the healing brush
    * sometomes the text tool acts strange. I will click to enter text and a large area opens to enter text instead of just the cursor positioned ready for text.  Then other times it works normally.
    * the move tools sometimesacts strange. For example, if I try to move some test, the text jumps and moves of the image and I have to find it to drag it back on the image.
    Thanks in advance

All I can say is...  Boy am I glad I have an ATI card that just works (and that's including Photoshop CS4/CS5 32/64 bit)!
One thing I'm not sure was mentioned above...  Try changing your Advanced OpenGL preferences to "Basic" or even turning off OpenGL to see if it affects the issue.  Also try disabling the Show Overlay function in the CLONE SOURCE palette.
Best of luck getting to the bottom of these problems, guys.  If they run on too long, consider switching brands.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 64 Bit Crashes At Start Up

    Hello.
Today I installed a fresh installation of Windows 7 64 Bit.
    Installed Photoshop CS4.
At first both 32 Bit and 64 Bit worked.
After installing some Plug Ins the 64 Bit stopped working.
It loads, then I get an Error Message:
    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\...
    R6025
    - pure virtual function call
    Then off it goes...
    I'm attaching the windows log.

    In support case;  Case #0181011167
    A member of Adobe Technical Support stated;
"I would like to infor you that Adobe CS4 is not tested on 64bit
    platform."
If I'm disseminating incorrect information, then it's information that's come from Adobe.
But it's nice to someone else is irritated by this.

  • Extract filter will not come up in Photoshop CS4 64 bit

I have put the extactPlus into the Plug-ins folder.  I close and open Photoshop.  the extract filter is not there.  What can I do?

There is a bit more.  I didn't know if anyone had the same problem as me but here is the rest.  I found there is a photoshop cs4 in (x86) and one in the none (x86) progam files.  Be sure you are using the icon that starts the none (x86) version of photoshop.  I went to the files of the none (x86) and clicked on the PS blue icon in the same bunch of program files where in inserted the extract filter.  Then it worked.   I know there are a lot of veriations but I hope this works for you.
    Al
Hmmm.  It hasn't worked for me.  I installed the plug-in in the Program Files as well (not x86) and it still doesn't show up on my laptop running 64bit.  Specifically the plug in is in the plug in folder > filters folder as stated in the instructions.  I'm thinking it could be a graphics card issue or any number of things.  Does anyone have any other ideas?
    Thanks!  Marvin

  • Photoshop CS4 - Converting bit depth on import

Photoshop seems to be converting pictures that I open to 8-bit from 24-bit: before the problem I think it was converting to 16-bit because Photoshop doesnt seem to support 24-bit but I cant remember.
I've been using Photoshop CS4 for about 4-5 weeks now without any problems and this just seems to have come out nowhere. The problem doesn't seem to be related to Camera Raw at all because I don't use it to import my pictures, so the "Workflow Options" don't seem to have any effect on the converting. I've also tried to delete the preferences file and that doesn't help either.
    Any ideas?

Photoshop doesn't convert bit depths or color modes when opening documents, unless there is an unsupported bit depth (like 12 bits/channel) in which case we convert upward (to 16 bits/channel).
It would help if you told us what file format you were talking about, and what you mean by "24 bit".

  • Photoshop CS4 - CMYK as default mode?

    Hi there,
I'm running Photoshop CS4 an a few machines using Windows Vista and Windows 7, and I'm wondering if there is a way to change the default mode to CYMK when making a new document, importing pictures etc.
At the moment, everything is RGB orientated. I've looked in Photoshop preferences and browsed the forums etc to no avail.
So my question is this: Is there a way to change the default colour mode to be CMYK when creating and opening documents?
I'm guessing there isn't an easy option (unless I've missed it), so is could it maybe be done a plugin or script?
Thanks for reading, and any thoughts, questions and answers appreciated
    Thanks

Photoshop remembers the setting in the File > New... dialog window. When you create a new image Photoshop always displays this window, for Color Mode choose CMYK and next time when you create a new image your last choice will be automatically selected.
However there is one exception, when you have copied image data to your clippboard. Then the Color Mode option will be automatically set to the color mode of the image that is in the clipboard. You can always clear image data from your clipboard by copying something else like text.
When opening documents, they will open in the color mode they were saved. If you want to convert them to CMYK you have to choose that from the Image > Mode menu.

  • Won't allow Photoshop CS4 to be default to open PSD files?

I am running Windows Vista and I'm trying to set Photoshop CS4 to be the 'default' to open .psd files, but for some reason it won't allow me to do this?  Has anyone else ever had this issue.  I have no clue why it won't allow me to do this because it's the default for several other extensions...
Any help or insight would be MUCH appreciated!

    Thanks for the reply.
Weird thing is, it shows that PhotoShop CS4 is what is used to open the .psd, .psb, etc files.. but I right click it and it has two other options.
I actually chose "Open With" Adobe Bridge, just out of curiosity to see if it would work and it does.  It seems like Photoshop CS4 is the only program I can't set to default open these files!
It's not making much sense to me right now haha.
    Thanks for the help though!

  • COM support for Photoshop CS4 64 bit?

Is COM support even part of the 64 bit version of Photoshop CS4?? I can't find any dlls or exes that are COM enabled in the 64 bit folder of PSCS4 and have tried installing support for CS4 x86, no luck. I've even tried the ScriptingSupport.8li file under Extensions.
No problems with Previous versions of CS on x86 machines only now with CS4 on the x64.

  • Photoshop CS4 jpeg quality default

Quality default when saving a jpg picture was always 12/maximum in my CS4. (That was great!) Suddenly it switched to 5/medium for NO reason! And I'm working on hundred of pictures - I really don't want to change it manually each time, but it seems to be impossible to change default settings for that (as long as it does not change just for fun like it did!)
Can someone PLEEEEAAASE help me, before I go completely crazy! It's much too expensive to waste my time like that...
For anyone who can solve my problem: THOUSAND thanks in advance!
    Greetings Michael

That would say that if Photoshop was the app that saved a JPEG in the first place, that it must put the quality setting in the file somewhere, so that it will use that as the default the next time.  I suspected it might be doing that (which is why I wrote "I could be wrong" i my first post) but wasn't sure as I have not tried to analyze the default quality setting before.
But I just tested it and this seems to be the algorithm:
    1.  If you open a JPEG saved by some other means (e.g., an out-of-camera JPEG or from another app) Photoshop appears to default to the last setting at which you saved any prior JPEG from Photoshop .
    2.  If you open a JPEG that was saved by Photoshop, it will read in the quality setting from the EXIF information in that file somewhere and use that as the default for the next File - Save As (and also plain File - Save apparently).

  • Officejet Pro 8500 and Adobe Photoshop CS4 64 bits Image Size Problem

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits desktop computer. After installing the Officejet Pro 8500 multifunctional drivers all was working OK. Images were being printed nice and with the correct size using Windows print option. After installing Adobe CS4 suite, all images printed from windows or Photoshop have incorrect size (photoshop prints it smaller and windows prints it larger).
I've installed all photoshop patches and re-install Officejet 8500 drivers, but the problem persists.
I've also tried to make a clean installation of the whole computer from the beginning
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? What would be the windows/HP files that were changed by Photoshop?
    Thank you.

I'm on the phone with HP tech support about this problem. He said he's gonna charge me to fix the problem and than he put me on hold. I'm waiting to find out how much money I've saved. You put some dollars in my pocket. Thanks!!!!!!

  • Photoshop CS4 64-bit - Copy & Paste Issue

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.  I am having trouble copying and pasting things.  The issue is that after I copy something/Print Screen, it takes several pastes for Photoshop to finally realize the change.  Basically, the first couple of times I paste, the thing that was previously copied gets pasted it.  I don't know if it's making a difference but it switches the paste to the latest thing that was copied faster after I minimize and maximize back the program.  It's extremely annoying especially because then I have to either undo each time/delete the layers.  Plus, I do a lot of frame comparisons between different video sources and it's hard to tell whether the thing being pasted was changed or not.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Unless you want the whole screen, why not use the Snipping tool? It's great!
Anyway, regarding the clipboard problem try Edit > Purge> Clipboard before you capture what you want.
