Photoshop CS4 (64bit) & Win7 x64 problem fixed

I just wanted to post this to help anyone who might be having this problem.
Here's the problem. When you use Photoshop's lasso tool, you can press ALT at the same time, and it would turn into a magnetic lasso tool that you can use to make straight lines.
Well, what would happen is that I would be making a selection, and then suddenly the screen (both screens, as I'm using a dual screen setup) would flicker, and the selection would complete by itself, and I would be SOL, as, obviously, the selection is not what I wanted.
I could replicate this without fail. I'm halfway done with making a perfect selection, and bam!, this crap happens, and I have to start all over again. It happens ALL the time, no matter what Photoshop setting I used. Photoshop was completely updated, and all my device drivers (video card, mouse drivers, etc.) were all at their latest. So I started looking outside Photoshop, as I was thinking it might be another software problem.
After much trial and error, I narrowed it down to Task Manager. I had Task Manager running in my tray. If I closed Task Manager (not minimize, close), restarted Photoshop, and made my selection using the lasso tool, the issue would go away, but would come back randomly.
The fix? Run Photoshop CS4 in Vista compatibility mode. This solves the problem completely.
I know a lot of you will probably say that you have Photoshop CS4 running flawlessly on Win7 x64, but I have 3 computers, each with completely different configurations, one of them being a laptop, that I was able to replicate this on. Once I ran Photoshop in Vista compatibility mode on each computer, the problem was completely solved.
So I hope this helps anyone who has run into this problem.

My CS4 32bit version seems to working fine with whatever i'm working on. I'm running a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit Ultimate on a new computer Intel quad core with 4gig of ram if that helps. Sorry if this have been asked before but i couldn't find anything on these forums. Thanks in advance.

i deleted the prefs file and now i can open photoshop. but it seems as if it crashes if i open ANY file with ANY text, no matter what the font is.

  • Plugin Dialog not visible in Photoshop CS4 64bit

    Hi all,
I am new in the world of photoshop plugins. I am using adobe photoshop CS4 64bit environment.
    I have converted a 32bit plugin into a 64bit plugin. I have succesfully loaded the plugin .
Now my problem is when i click on the pluginName from the menu list, my plugin dialog is not visible. I am using DialogBoxParam API to show the
dialog within the  "DoUI" method but this API(DialogBoxParam) is returning an error value. I have used the GetLastError and got the below mentioned
    error:
Error 1813: The specified resource type can not be found in the image file.
The 32bit plugin is running succesfully with this dialog resource. I am using the same .rc file which i am using in 32 bit plugin.
Please help me, it is very urgent for me..
Thanks in advance.. Any type of help is highly appreciated. If anybody has any problem in understanding my problem please revert me back i will try to

    Hi,
I think i have not described my problem well..
I'll try it again to make it more clear..
I have a 32 bit filter plugin, which is running successfully on Photoshop CS4 32-bit environment. Now i want my plugin to be run on CS4 64bit environment as well. When i tried to run my plugin in the 64-bit environment with all the 64-bit settings which are required, my plugin is not loaded succesfully. Then i used a sample 64-bit plugin(Dissolve) and put my plugin code inside dissolve plugins code. Changed the dissolve.r file with my plugin .r file and dissolve.rc file with my plugin .rc file. Now my plugin is loading succesfully but when i click the plugin from filter menu list, my plugin dialog is not shown. I  do not understand why is it happening? Plz provide some information.

  • Where can I get Photoshop CS4 64bit?

I've seen a lot of people talking about Photoshop CS4 64bit native code, but I can't figure out where to get it.
I'm currently using Windows XP, but plan to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional 64bit in a week or two.  I'm going to reload all my programs from scratch and would like to start with the 64bit version of Photoshop CS4.
I purchased the standard Photoshop CS4 CD from Adobe, but I don't remember seeing anything about the 64bit version when I initially loaded the 32bit version on WinXP 32bit.  Maybe I didn't see anything because I don't have a 64bit system yet.
I have Googled and looked for this information in Adobe's Knowledgebase with no luck...

  • Photoshop CS4 (64bit) - crash at startup

OS: vista 64bit (all latest updates)
    nvidia 8800gts 512 (driver 180.48)
8 gb RAM + latest mobo bios
It was working totally fine then WHAM! I noticed it first when i minimized it to the taskbar to look for some other files on my desktop. now it suddenly doesn't want to start. the 'only' thing is that the pc went into hibernation while i was at lunch a few times this week (can't see that having an effect)
I start it up and it crashes +/- after 8 seconds. EVERY time.
    - Tried using the "run as admin" = didn't work (tried it just in case)
    - tried changing a few settings in nvidia control panel = nada!
    - once i got it open within the 8 seconds, I turned off openGL completly = nada!
    - I've used the "DisallowOpenGLWindows_OFF.reg" just in case and that doesn't work either. (its a pretty recent GFX card)
all other cs4 apps (master suite) are working fine!
this exact same thing happened just before i reinstalled vista x64 about a month ago.
anyone got this problem? any solutions?
    Pete

Ok I've spent the last few hours going through ALL my custom fonts and trying to find what was causing the problem. I typed out all of the characters on my keyboard and cycled through my fonts from top to bottom.
I'm a guitarist also, and I discovered the culprit to be guitar pros "Guitar Pro 5.ttf" - must be a glyph problem in the font that photoshop couldn't handle (as i said before...no problems with the rest of my CS4)....although the problem was the guitar pro font, photoshop kept crashing on other STANDARD installed fonts such as Arial, georgia, corbel....until i removed the guitar pro one. man this was a pain to locate!!!
now the weirdest thing is it only started happening yesterday. both programs have been installed side by side for over a month without issue. what gives?
photoshop SHOULD have a popup whenever this problem occurs (similar to illys missing font dialogue) for font exclusions if they stop it from running.
    saying something like:
b "Photoshop CS4 has failed to load "name of font.ttf".
    Do you want to:
    - Add font to exclusion list?
    - uninstall the font?
while I'm on the subject, is there a way to make the CS4 suite point at a font directory other than the default (C:\Windows\Fonts)?
as I don't ever use those fonts in MS office or any other program. with the BONUS of not loading all these fonts at startup.
    /end of rant

  • The nVidia 258.96 drivers crash Photoshop CS4 (64bit)

I have the latest nVidia drivers installed yesterday and I noticed that PS CS4 crashes within 15minutes of use (by crashing the display driver and then crashing itself). Any solutions for this issue? I am an advanced user (11years of PC usage and IT-student for 5 years etc.) so this is either PS or nVidia driver issue, have posted about this now to both manufactor forums. I try next to just disable the GL acceleration from PS settings for possible temp. solution for this. Would love to know what's causing this.
PS. The gfx card temps are fine etc.
    Related specs:
    Windows 7 Pro 64bit
    ASUS P5Q Deluxe mobo
    E8500 @ 4ghz cpu
    MSI GTX 275 gfx card
    4gb of ram

As a workaround try the various Advanced OpenGL options.  There was a time a long while back when I was using CS4 and a (then-current) older driver set, and as I recall switching to Basic OpenGL settings helped me work around a problem that was later fixed in newer drivers.
I've noticed that OpenGL implementations are pretty actively being maintained by all the video card makers in the time after Photoshop CS4 and CS5 released.  It's good that a serious application has put some real pressure on the driver makers to tidy up the software.  OpenGL is actually getting to where you can rely on it now.

  • Photoshop CS4 - new report, old problems

    Hi there,
although i have posted many of the following problems in another thread, i will recall them here, because the other thread has gone slightly off-topic.
I have been "using" Photoshop CS4 that came as part of my Production Suite Premium Package for as long as it is out now and i have to say, that for me it is the worst release ever.
I work with Photoshop since Version 3 and every new release has had it's flaws that were fixed after a while. So i really hope this might also be the case with CS4.
So here are my System Specs again:
    Intel Dualcore E8600
    NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver: 180.48)
    MSI P35 Neo-2 Motherboard (Bios: 1.90)
    3 GB RAM
    Wacom Intuos 3 A4 (Driver: pro610-5)
    Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
The System is brandnew, the Windows-Installation is fresh, before the CS4 Suite there has not been another Adobe-Program on the machine.
While I am quiet happy with the other programs (Illustrator, Flash, After Effects..even Bridge is starting to become useful), Photoshop CS4 shows several glitches and problems on my system. These are:
    - If activated, the GPU-OpenGL setting deactivates randomly. There's no obvious reason for this, just in the middle of work, the rotate canvas-tool is no longer available, zooming is no longer smooth. While the box in the preferences is still checked for OpenGL and my graphics-card is recognized correctly, OpenGL features just stop working. After I close and restart Photoshop everything is normal again, until the next time settings are deactivated.
I am so far not able to trace the reason for this behavior, seems to happen quiet random.
    - No "marching ants". In the same matter, the "marching ants" of selections sometimes disappear. While this is not a big problem I think i should note it here for reasons of being accurate.
    - Brush tool stops working. I have this quiet a lot. While I paint, the Brush suddenly stops working completely. It produces neither strokes nor blotches anymore. In some cases hefty drawing can result in some strange straight lines but the brush tool can only be revived by restarting Photoshop.
    - Crashes. I truly honestly haven't had a crash with CS2 and CS3 ONCE. With CS4 crashes seem to be quiet normal at this point. The application simply freezes, mostly while using the transformation tool. Killing it via the windows task manager is the only option.
    - Slow redraw. All the above mentioned problems did occur with OpenGL enabled AND disabled. It really makes no difference. So deactivating this new thing doesn't convert Photoshop back into something useful, but into a slower version of CS3. Redraw of images is considerably slower on CS4 without OpenGL, than it was on CS3, although it gets better after some time working with it. Moving a maximized Image around feels very strange, because the build up of the tiles is somehow slow and sluggish.
    - Features I used are no longer there or no longer functional. I use Layer-Comps a lot. With activated OpenGL the Script "Layer Comps to Files" does not work. It produces an error-message that reads:
    Error 1: Unable to create Window - OS error (1400) Line: 234 -> dlgMain = new Window("dialog", strTitle);
With OpenGL deactivated it suddenly works... no idea why.
In addition some features like the automatic web gallery creation have been removed from Photoshop, but i figured out how to get them back.
While these are the really bad things about the new version (on my system that is, I heard from Mac-Users who are quiet happy with PS CS4 and keep telling me how fast it is on a Mac.....) there are other things, that i don't understand. I reckon, Photoshop cs4 is first of all a Mac-product and the PC-Version is somehow adapted or converted.
Proof of this for me is the new window behavior. Windows steeling focus and blocking sight on palettes is new for a long time PC-User like me. I also don't understand, why maximizing an image does fill the complete screen thus exterminatin

While I can not help remedy your problems, Pickman, I can tell you I have mostly the same problems as you. I am not the only one either. I hear this from my students. Marching ants disappearing is normal now, palettes hiding behind windows seems common nowadays. Photoshop losing focus, a document suddenly refusing to be the front one and having to minimize the other document(s) to have it back, lasso tool suddenly not showing it's tracing mark, it's all horrible. The error 'unable to create window' is very common.
I didn't even mention the fact that it's no longer possible to downsize the Photoshop window by it's top edge, which is utterly annoying when you have multiple windows open as I often have or the fact that when I scale the main Photoshop window, the documents stay in place and that the tooltips often don't work which is confusing for the novices that I train. I thought they had remedied that in CS3, but it's back in CS4. I have been using Photoshop since version 3 (briefly) then 4, 5 et cetera. This is one of the worst releases ever.

  • Photoshop CS4 64bit crash at launch

Afternoon everyone!  I know this might be a dead horse getting beaten again, but after searching the forums I couldn't find a situation that matches mine.
I am currently running Photoshop CS4, latest update to 11.0.2.  Until about 2 days ago I was running 64bit version photoshop.  I came into work the next morning and the computer was completely hung.  I did a hard restart, and since then I can only use Photosop CS4 32bit.  Every time I try to launch 64bit Cs4, this is the windows crash error I get:

I know this is not related to plugins, because I don't run plugins on my work computer.  In fact, the largest files I use are usually 3000x3000, and under 4-5mb.  I'm not pushing Photoshop at all.  Any ideas?
I have tried doing a clean install 2x times with no luck.  I'm wondering if something is stuck in registry or old files from a previous install are causing this?  I have also made sure I'm updated with all my other related drivers:  ATI graphics card up to date, etc.
    Ideas?

Generally speaking, you should see no errors (just a whole lot of informationals).  Probably the best thing is to just scan through the log using the time stamps to limit the entries to those that occurred around the time of the problem.
Might be a good time to open up the computer and clean out the dust (e.g., gently with a vacuum and brush nozzle).  Overheating can reduce reliability.  Does the room get hot (e.g., because the A/C is turned off) at any time of the day?

  • Photoshop CS4 64bit RAM detection issue

    Hi all,
I have Dell Precision M6400 with 12Gb of RAM and Photoshop CS4 (as a part of master collection).
    Here is my problem:
Figure 1 (system spec showing my 12Gb of ram)
Figure 2 (showing ps cs4 64bit system info read)
Figure 3 (where did all my RAM GO?! only 2963?!)

I called dell support and they resloved the issue
Problem was that i had maximum memory set in boot options (msconfig / boot / advanced options) to 4000mb. Still not sure how that was set or if that was part of bios update (reset).
    Thanks!

  • Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4(64bit)...'

I've just installed the CS6 upgrade on my WIndows VIsta x64 bit machine.
Just now, I opened a folder of files in Bridge CS6.
I highlighted one of the files and selected Ctrl/o to host Camera Raw in Photoshop, which is what I always do.
But, I got an error message saying that Windows cannot find Photoshop CS4.
I did uninstall CS5 after installing the upgrade, if that makes any difference.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    D.

For some users an uninstall of previous version wrecks havoc with file associations.
First try edit/preferences/file type associations.  Click on reset "reset to default associations".  If that does not work click on individual file and set default to CS6.
If the above does not work you either have to unistall CS6, run the Adobe Script Cleaner or read registry solution in this link.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1005273?tstart=0

  • How to safely remove 32-bit Photoshop CS4 from Win7 64-bit?

I have installed Master Collection CS4 on my ThinkPad running Win7 64-bit. The installer installed both the 32-bit and 64-bit Photoshop CS4 which is wasting the hard disk space. There seems to be no way to install only the 64-bit PS from the installer. Nor can I find a way to uninstall only the 32-bit PS using the MC uninstaller.
    Can anyone help please.

I think Adobe were being cautious with their first ever 64-bit version of PS and wanted a built-in fallback position, to avoid too much trouble.
Hard disk space is cheap – even on a laptop.
Maybe CS5 will give the choice.
