Photoshop CS4 'Arrange Documents' dialog

Photoshop CS4:
Problem: With several documents open by going to the ‘Arrange Documents’ flyout dialog they could be arranged in the manner required - however the dialog flyout on my setup is blank - I can still arrange the documents by clicking on the appropriate blank area - but I would like to see the appropriate indicators back in the dialog - they used to be there!
Any pointers to a fix for this?
I have tried removing and restoring CS4 - this didn’t fix the problem.
Thanks
Hawkeye

I removed Nik Silver Efex Pro and CS4 is happily back to where it should be - I have no real need for the Nik programme which I was trying out.
Thank you for a rapid and correct response to something that's been annoying me for the past week or two!

Can this Photoshop CS4 new document dialog issue be improved? Info in the pic.

there's a feature request section at the top of the fourm allen. these kinds of posts should be done in there, so the programmers and engineers at adobe have them all in one place.

  • CS4 Arrange Documents in Workspace?

Just wondering, as a new CS4 user, if it might be possible to choose "Float All in Windows"  from the Arrange Documents dropdown as a part of my workspace?

You set it in Edit > Preferences > Interface by unchecking Open documents as Tabs.

  • Photoshop CS4 Save As Dialog

I remember back in CS3 we had the option to use the Adobe dialog for Saving and Opening files. On CS4 I don't have this feature anymore. Was it included or do I need to change a setting?
    Thanks,

I missing the Adobe Dialog feature in Save As, too. It was a HUGE, HUGE, HUGE timesaver for me to be able to specify my own favorite folders for saving. The five available from the OS are useless and force me to manually navigate the file tree at every single save. The lost time caused by the deletion of this feature more than undoes the time savings from the new click-and-drag-on the image curves feature.
I hope Adobe brings the Adobe Dialog back. If the statement is true that there was probably "too much trouble with compatibility issues on different OSs," it's ridiculous. How difficult can it be to program for a list of favorite folders?
The workflow is getting slower with each new release. In the last version of Bridge, they took away the ability to select a bunch of photos and drag them to the destination folder of your choice. Now, the file tree returns automatically to view the source directory, instead of the destination directory. Like I want to drag files from source to source!

  • CS4: Arrange Document for Saddle Stitching Feature

I am going to be making a magazine or booklet printed on tabloid and then folded to create a booklet. Is there a feature in InDesign CS4 to make the arrangement quicker and easier? I could manually figure out how to arrange the pages but that seems like unnecessary work.
For future reference I'd also like to know the technical term for this technique of arranging the pages properly for saddle stitch binding so I can google this next time.
    Thanks!

No copy shop I ever used accounts for creep. I send a book out now and then to see what the Staples does (There's one about 10 minutes from me).
Most shops use the same stock for their jobs. Almost without exception, I use 20# or 60# offset for inside pages. Occasionally the 80# gloss text job. You'd be surprised how accurate I can be. It's like any job. After years and years you get a pretty good feel. The majority of clients aren't even concerned about creep. Especially if they're supplying me the single pages. I'll adjust creep for jobs I design in house and will be pretty accurate.

  • Photoshop CS4 11.0 and 11.0.1 for Windows crashing when saving a newly opened document

If I open a new document in Photoshop CS4 11.0 or 11.0.1 for Windows (on Windows XP SP3 home edition) and then try to save it, Photoshop window disappears (I guess the program crashes, although no Widows crash dialogue is displayed).
Workaround: If I open an existing document (say TIFF) and then erase all from it (say background layer, etc.) change ppi, paper size and format, etc., and save it (say as PSD) Photoshop does not crash.
Has anybody experienced similar problem and does anybody know if there is a fix for it?
    Thanks.

    Your
New Doc Sizes.psp preference file is probably corrupted.
Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef4a07f/1
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.

  • Arrange Documents CS4

    Hello
One new feature in CS4 is 'arrange documents' and the drop down options.
This works great. However when I close the open files and open some more
CS4 has lost the settings I had. Is there somewhere to make it default to
'my' settings - always do the same as last settings. For example 'float all in windows' would be the default to always open new files instead of tabbed always opening first.
    Thank You
    Forrest

Ok Thank You. I think I found it. If anyone else would like the answer its uncheck 'Open Documents as Tabs' under prefs/interface/Panels & Documents

  • When openong photoshop cs4- could not complete your request because wrong kind of document

    Hi
I've just installed the free trial of photoshop cs4.. with much difficulty! Firstly it was saying please install adobe file exe? which I don't have a clue how to do. But I managed to install photoshop and thought I was getting somewhere, but now it keeps popping up with couldn't complete your request because it's the wrong kind of document? It allows me to go into photoshop but I can't seem to do anything? Can anyone help?
I'm a novice with computers so please bear this in mind when you respond. Many thanks

I found that knowledge-base article and did every step in it...
I even went beyond... I deactivated CS4, completely uninstalled using AppZapper and then manually went through and tossed every adobe pref file in both users and in system.
I then reinstalled CS4 from scratch, reactivated, and exact same issue. It happens when running in both the 32, and 64 bit kernel as well.
It's so odd too... it runs fine for around 40 seconds. I can open a doc, add type, but then that annoying error pop-up comes and it gets stuck in a loop. I can only click on 'OK', which just makes the error window open again. And again, again, etc... you can't escape. The only way to quit is to 'force quit'.

    I have converted a 32bit plugin into a 64bit plugin. I have succesfully loaded the plugin .
Now my problem is when i click on the pluginName from the menu list, my plugin dialog is not visible. I am using DialogBoxParam API to show the
dialog within the  "DoUI" method but this API(DialogBoxParam) is returning an error value. I have used the GetLastError and got the below mentioned
    error:
Error 1813: The specified resource type can not be found in the image file.
The 32bit plugin is running succesfully with this dialog resource. I am using the same .rc file which i am using in 32 bit plugin.
Please help me, it is very urgent for me..
Thanks in advance.. Any type of help is highly appreciated. If anybody has any problem in understanding my problem please revert me back i will try to

    Hi,
I think i have not described my problem well..
I'll try it again to make it more clear..
I have a 32 bit filter plugin, which is running successfully on Photoshop CS4 32-bit environment. Now i want my plugin to be run on CS4 64bit environment as well. When i tried to run my plugin in the 64-bit environment with all the 64-bit settings which are required, my plugin is not loaded succesfully. Then i used a sample 64-bit plugin(Dissolve) and put my plugin code inside dissolve plugins code. Changed the dissolve.r file with my plugin .r file and dissolve.rc file with my plugin .rc file. Now my plugin is loading succesfully but when i click the plugin from filter menu list, my plugin dialog is not shown. I  do not understand why is it happening? Plz provide some information.

  • Photoshop CS4 crashing whenever I try to open or create a document

I have had photoshop cs4 for well over a year now and it has been working perfectly up until now. Now whenever I try to open or create any type of image, a window appears saying "Adobe Photoshop CS4 has stopped working, windows is searching for a solution." Then photoshop just closes with no error message or anything.
I have deleted my preferences, changed my default printer, and reinstalled multiple times but nothing seems to make any difference.
    Can someone please help me???

    Some thoughts:
You have filled your HDD's up
You have made a change, hardware or software, that is getting in the way - a System Restore Point might be helpful here
You are running low on resources. Though written for video-editing (more intense than image editing), this ARTICLE might be useful. Note: many of the newer, real-time anti-virus scanning programs have been known to play badly with PS and with PrPro. Do you have any?

  • Photoshop CS4 - new report, old problems

    Hi there,
although i have posted many of the following problems in another thread, i will recall them here, because the other thread has gone slightly off-topic.
I have been "using" Photoshop CS4 that came as part of my Production Suite Premium Package for as long as it is out now and i have to say, that for me it is the worst release ever.
I work with Photoshop since Version 3 and every new release has had it's flaws that were fixed after a while. So i really hope this might also be the case with CS4.
So here are my System Specs again:
    Intel Dualcore E8600
    NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver: 180.48)
    MSI P35 Neo-2 Motherboard (Bios: 1.90)
    3 GB RAM
    Wacom Intuos 3 A4 (Driver: pro610-5)
    Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
The System is brandnew, the Windows-Installation is fresh, before the CS4 Suite there has not been another Adobe-Program on the machine.
While I am quiet happy with the other programs (Illustrator, Flash, After Effects..even Bridge is starting to become useful), Photoshop CS4 shows several glitches and problems on my system. These are:
    - If activated, the GPU-OpenGL setting deactivates randomly. There's no obvious reason for this, just in the middle of work, the rotate canvas-tool is no longer available, zooming is no longer smooth. While the box in the preferences is still checked for OpenGL and my graphics-card is recognized correctly, OpenGL features just stop working. After I close and restart Photoshop everything is normal again, until the next time settings are deactivated.
I am so far not able to trace the reason for this behavior, seems to happen quiet random.
    - No "marching ants". In the same matter, the "marching ants" of selections sometimes disappear. While this is not a big problem I think i should note it here for reasons of being accurate.
    - Brush tool stops working. I have this quiet a lot. While I paint, the Brush suddenly stops working completely. It produces neither strokes nor blotches anymore. In some cases hefty drawing can result in some strange straight lines but the brush tool can only be revived by restarting Photoshop.
    - Crashes. I truly honestly haven't had a crash with CS2 and CS3 ONCE. With CS4 crashes seem to be quiet normal at this point. The application simply freezes, mostly while using the transformation tool. Killing it via the windows task manager is the only option.
    - Slow redraw. All the above mentioned problems did occur with OpenGL enabled AND disabled. It really makes no difference. So deactivating this new thing doesn't convert Photoshop back into something useful, but into a slower version of CS3. Redraw of images is considerably slower on CS4 without OpenGL, than it was on CS3, although it gets better after some time working with it. Moving a maximized Image around feels very strange, because the build up of the tiles is somehow slow and sluggish.
    - Features I used are no longer there or no longer functional. I use Layer-Comps a lot. With activated OpenGL the Script "Layer Comps to Files" does not work. It produces an error-message that reads:
    Error 1: Unable to create Window - OS error (1400) Line: 234 -> dlgMain = new Window("dialog", strTitle);
With OpenGL deactivated it suddenly works... no idea why.
In addition some features like the automatic web gallery creation have been removed from Photoshop, but i figured out how to get them back.
While these are the really bad things about the new version (on my system that is, I heard from Mac-Users who are quiet happy with PS CS4 and keep telling me how fast it is on a Mac.....) there are other things, that i don't understand. I reckon, Photoshop cs4 is first of all a Mac-product and the PC-Version is somehow adapted or converted.
Proof of this for me is the new window behavior. Windows steeling focus and blocking sight on palettes is new for a long time PC-User like me. I also don't understand, why maximizing an image does fill the complete screen thus exterminatin

While I can not help remedy your problems, Pickman, I can tell you I have mostly the same problems as you. I am not the only one either. I hear this from my students. Marching ants disappearing is normal now, palettes hiding behind windows seems common nowadays. Photoshop losing focus, a document suddenly refusing to be the front one and having to minimize the other document(s) to have it back, lasso tool suddenly not showing it's tracing mark, it's all horrible. The error 'unable to create window' is very common.
I didn't even mention the fact that it's no longer possible to downsize the Photoshop window by it's top edge, which is utterly annoying when you have multiple windows open as I often have or the fact that when I scale the main Photoshop window, the documents stay in place and that the tooltips often don't work which is confusing for the novices that I train. I thought they had remedied that in CS3, but it's back in CS4. I have been using Photoshop since version 3 (briefly) then 4, 5 et cetera. This is one of the worst releases ever.

  • Photoshop CS4 Freezes when opening PDFs

When I drag two, 2-page PDFs onto Photoshop CS4 to open them, PS opens one page of one PDF and then freezes. I can replicate this every time I try.
Once PS freezes it takes a little patience to get it to force quit.
    Any advice?

Not to dig up the past, but I've been having this problem since a couple of months ago, and I have an idea about what might be causing the bug. It IS a bug.
My workflow involves taking hundreds of PSD and PDF files for product packaging and converting them to 3D and 2D product shots. We have to supply retailers with high-res JPGs of our distributed products. Most of the original files have crop marks, color bars, etc.
In the past, all I had to do was drag my files, whatever they were, to the dock. I would typically work in batches, pulling up 10 or so files at once, cropping them, and then running an action, depending on the general format. Pretty much every layout is a different size, or using a different template, or what have you, so using an action to do the actual cropping is completely out of the question. Cropping in Acrobat is horribly implemented, so that's out of the question.
One day I started doing some image processing as normal, and photoshop opened the first PDF, rasterized it, and then became completely unresponsive. Well, let me specifically qualify that. It lets me continue using any application other than photoshop, and it will let me click on the menus, which will drop down from the menu bar, but you can't select any commands at all. They aren't grayed out, they just don't respond. The behavior is exactly what you would get if you had a dialog box open, but there isn't an open dialog box. There SHOULD be (for the next PDF), but it isn't there.
You can't "quit" or close that first PDF or anything. Some commands will try to function (scripts) but fail and say "Sorry, something major happened, and I can't continue" (yes, that's really the error message).
OS X doesn't think that PS is locked up. PS doesn't think it is locked up, but it won't do anything at all. It only happens with multiple PDFs being dragged to the dock or opened through "file/open." In fact, if you select 30 PSD files, 10 JPGs, 5 EPS files, 1 PDF and 10 Illustrator files, it will work just fine. 2 PDFs? locks up.
I've found one way to get around this bug, and it might work for those of you with this problem. Use the File/Scripts/Image Processor tool to rasterize your PDFs to PSD files as an intermediate step, and then you can open them in Photoshop. If you need something other than pg 1 of a multipage document, you'll have to edit in acrobat first to get rid of unwanted leading pages.
That's been my work-around for a few months.
I just recently moved from my Mac Pro to a new MacBook Pro. I did a clean install, and then ran migration assistant to move my stuff over to a new account.
Everything went well, but the photoshop bug appeared to follow me to a new machine. I was very frustrated.
Then I realized what had changed around the time of this bug originally showing up: I'd added a second monitor!
So, thinking I'd figured out the bug and how to get around it for real, I just disconnected my external monitor and force-quit Photoshop. Opened it back up, and the bug is still there in force, even with one display active.
    Here's my info, to clarify:
    Original machine with the bug:
    Mac Pro 2 x 2.66 ghz (4 core 2007 model)
    8GB RAM
    320 GB velociraptor (system drive)
    1.5TB RAID 0, 900 GB free (scratch)
    10.5.7-10.6.6 (bug never went away)
    2 NEC 20" LCDs
    CS5 Design Premium, fully updated
    New machine, also with bug:
    2011 15" MacBook Pro, 2.0ghz 4 core
    8 GB RAM
120GB SATA6 SSD (system drive, primary scratch), 70 GB free
500 GB stock HDD (in the optical bay, storage drive, secondary scratch), 250 GB free
    10.6.7
    1 NEC 20" LCD + built-in hi-res display

  • Photoshop CS4 quits when saving

When I save a document, Photoshop unexpectantly quits. I'm running Mavericks on a late 2009 iMac. 8Gb of RAM. 300+Gb of hard drive available.
I've ran DiskWarrior, Apple's Disc Utilities, Restarted the iMac.
I've held-down Command, Option, Shift when starting Photoshop.
I've removed the Adobe Photoshop CS4 Prefs.psp file.
I've deleted third-party brushes and restored the default brushes.
Thinking it was font related, I used Suitcase Fusion and FontDoctor to find any corrupted fonts. It found some. I set those aside.
    Nothing has helped.
I've noticed when I close a Photoshop document after working in it, then choose Save from that dialog box, it saves my work and Photoshop doesn't unexpectedly quit.
I noticed in a Guest account on the computer, Photoshop seems to work fine (it doesn't unexpectedly quit when I save).
Does anybody have any other ideas?
    Thanks!
    Cameron

    Yes, it crashes.
The crash report is lengthy, so I've uploaded it to my website: http://trentstudios.com/cameron-crash-report.txt

  • Photoshop CS4 Window Stays In Background

When I drag an image file into Photoshop CS4, the file opens but Photoshop remains in the background – i.e., in the window behind the one that I dragged the file from.
For example - I open Photoshop, then open Bridge, with the Bridge window mostly covering Photoshop’s window. Drag a file from Bridge to PS. The file opens in PS, but the PS window is still behind Bridge’s window. I have to either ALT-Tab or click on the PS Window to bring it to the front.
On prior editions of PS, it would come to the front automatically when a new file was opened. I still have CS3 on my computer, and verified this.
This happens whether the file is dragged from Bridge, Windows Explorer, or Thumbs Plus. It happens in both the 64 and 32 bit versions of CS4. I looked through the preferences and don’t see anything that seems to relate to this behavior. Is this how CS4 is meant to work? Is there any setting I can tweak to change this?
    Thanks in advance –
    TR

    It doesn't happen here.
Sometimes I have to use the Arrange Documents menu to float the image.
However, I normally jut "Open" them from Bridge with a double click or right-click, rather than dragging.

  • Photoshop CS4 opengl crapness

I'm wondering why is it that I have to go into the prefereneces every sodding time to enable the GPU support.. I have the latest gfx drivers XPsp3, 8800gtx, Photoshop seems incapable of just working properly, I suppose I could ignore the error message, but it would still leave me to have go turn the stupid poor feature back on... which does actually work, but PS seems to think it needs disabling after I close the program.. wtf
btw I did follow adobes crap support docs on this issue...
"3. Update your GPU drivers and then turn on Enable OpenGL Drawing.
If Photoshop crashes or disappears because of a GPU problem, it turns off Enable OpenGL Drawing and it writes a flag file in the preferences folder, called GPUinitcrashed. The next time you open Photoshop, this warning displays: "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software. GPU enhancements can be enabled in the Performance panel of Preferences."
Download the most recent version of your display driver from the display card manufacturer's site (Windows) or check to see if there's an operating system update (Mac OS).
Important: If you turn on Enable OpenGL Drawing before you update your driver, then Photoshop uses the old display driver again. If the driver wasn't updated, then Photoshop fails again. If you do not turn on Enable OpenGL Drawing, then the GPU won't be accessed and Photoshop does not fail.
..."Photoshop does not fail.".. lol yeah right Photoshop FAILS alright.. fails at poor innovation and shity noob features year in, year out.

When I say I have the latest gfx drivers.. I mean the LATEST 180.43 currently ... "It's probably safe to say that a lot of people who claim to have "the latest drivers" haven't really bothered to check in a while. " ... so you can take that nonsense back.
anyway for the past day PS hasn't brought back the opengl prompt saying its disabled itself... course the day before that even though I was using the same gfx drivers it would forget I had turned on acceleration, and on next app relaunch I'd get that prompt. So I'm just hoping it stays on this time and doesn't bother me again, course if upgrade the gfx drivers I'm sure it will disable itself again and I'll be back to the useless PS preferences dialog to enable it.
Chris Farrel.. its def not an issue to do with my hdd setup or partition setup.. i know what you're saying, but scratch disks and disk i/o is not the issue here.. its Photoshop CS4 and it has some issues caused with this opengl implementation and GUI change, maybe its also to do with Nvidia they've been known to be slackers for fixing application bugs.. if it ain't a game they don't seem give **** I mean they are more likely to have hoards of gamers pissed off at there new game not working than adobe users who don't seem to have a clue when something isn't working or a way of pinpointing the problem.
Bart Cross - grow some balls.. and instead of playing cry baby.. you leave some crap response about XP being the problem!! you're blaming an OS that has run Photoshop CS3 absolutly fine without any floating doc lag or opengl disabling itself on app close! and don't at all think that perhaps CS4 that has a new graphics system is perhaps has some issues? you must be one stupid fanboy. I wonder what your OS of choice is.
Pimco- delay as much as possible or try get CS3, CS4 is a doozy, no doubt CS5 might be better.. heck you might even get the rest of the features they held back from this release :P like they give you alt+rmb left/right to adjust brush size..but wtf happened to adjusting brush hardness.. pfff Adobe idiots.. that might get added next 18months where you'll be able to alt+rmb up&down to adjust brush hardness or let alone any other brush dynamics.. well done adobe.. thanks for stringing out the features.
And I've heard many other CS4 users complain about the poor opengl performance.. and not just in Photoshop .. AFX .. heck even Soundbooth has been known to have gfx glitches.. and moving floating documents does display a lag, not when you're moving but initialy as you grab hold of that floating docs titlebar.. never happened with PS CS3.
Wing.. you must be my new fan :) to go out and collect all those quotes well done. I enjoyed reading them
