Photoshop CS4 brush lag with wacom tablet

I've upgraded to photoshop CS4 extended recently and all my brushes that worked fine under CS3 are now with a real lag.
I've installed the latest version of photoshop ( Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 update ) and the latest update for my wacom tablet, but the lag remains.
My computer is a new "24 imac:
-  2,66 GHz intel Core 2 duo processor
-  4 GB memory
-  NVIDIA GeForce 9400
I use my tablet and photoshop a lot, but with this lag it's terrible to draw..
Is there someone who can help me with this or has the same problems ?
thanks in advance

Glad I could be of service.
Speaking of services, if you are running Vista or Windows 7 (not XP) you should turn off tablet services too. They automatically start if you install a Wacom driver on these Os'es, and they can also cause hiccups and lag in Photoshop CS4.
You have to be logged in with admin privleges.
Go to Control Panel->System and Security->Administrative Tools->Services
Open 'Tablet PC Input Service'
Stop the service and select 'Disabled' as the startup type.
You'll know you got it because the annoying 'ripple' effect will go away when you touch the pen to the tablet, and the pop-up keyboard will go away. Of course, if you actually are running on a tablet PC then don't do this.

  • Photoshop CS4 sudden lag after installing tablet driver

    Hi..
So my PS CS4 had never lagged before, it was all running perfectly, all functions are going quickly. I was using the newest driver for wacom intuos 3,
but with using a new driver, I had a weird pressure problem. It would only work with an older driver, so I uninstalled the newest driver and changed it into the older driver. But it won't work unless I trash photoshop prefernces (the ctrl alt shift thing) ...
Suddenly everything just turns laggy, although no pressure problem.. brush lag, text tool lag, everything, even moving the canvas window lags. I don't know how to return the old preferences, i tried increasing virtual memory from 4k to 6k mb, but no change. In performance tab I changed memory usage from 70% to 80% no change too.
I would like to try and change back to the newer wacom tablet, but i never found a solution to the newer driver pressure problem, everyone in some other forum suggested to trash photoshop preferences and change to older driver.. Ages ago, I did this in my computer, and it's running good, but recently I want to do it in my laptop, and it lags.
    I'm using windows 7, 64bit.
    RAM 8gb,
E and C drive are more than 100GB available.
    photoshop version 11.0
openGL turned off (or on, no difference)
I tried uninstalling photoshop but no luck. I tried updating GeForce driver to the latest version, no luck too. (I'm using gtx 420m)
I'm just curious if there's a way to fix the problem without having to download photoshop patch (because it was running perfectly so I don't think it has anything to do with photoshop patch?)
any idea? please tell me if i forgot to mention something..
    thank you

Hi, really appreciated your reply, thank you very much. I didn't know anything about this, but if I didn't rollback, I will still have weird pressure problem.. I uninstalled the newer driver properly too, unplugged the tablet, shutting it down, exactly like the people's suggestion in that certain forum. Nobody else seems to be able to find the solution for the weird pressure with newer drivers. I can't find anymore solution beside rollbacking drivers, tried asking here and there.. I also dared to do this in my laptop because this method works in my PC.. Wacom only suggested that we update the driver to the newest, which never helped at all.
I tried photoshop without any tablet drivers, still lags : (
I will try updating photoshop and let you know.
    Thanks!

  • Photoshop CC 2014 incompatible with Wacom tablets?

Hey everyone, so I'm having a lot of issues with my Wacom tablets and PS CC 2014. So, I have two tablets hooked up to my computer (and before you ask, no, the issues don't stem from two tablets being connected to the computer. I already tested that.) A Cintiq 21UX and an Intuos 5. Both work very well and as you would expect in Photoshop CC, however in CC 2014 they have loads of problems. On the Cintiq, while I get great, fluid lines with the brush tool I can't change my eraser's size on the fly by rotating my pen like usual. It's very annoying and absolutely destroys workflow. Now, the eraser works, but the size can't be changed by flipping the pen from the brush tool like it normally would be able to. That's just the issue with the Cintiq though, on the Intuos 5 there's no pen pressure whatsoever! It just thinks the pen is a mouse, on both sides of it. I'm certain this isn't a driver issue, as the tablets have their drivers up-to-date and work perfectly with both Photoshop CC (standard) and Corel Painter X3.
Does anyone know how I could fix these issues?

I'm on Windows 8.1 with an Intuos4 tablet.  I updated to photoshop CC 2014 and after updating the tablet driver so I had the use Windows Ink checkbox I got the pressure sensitivity back but the lines are horrible and jagged so I'm trying to revert to the old implementation following your instructions and created the txt file named PSUserConfig.txt with the lines
    # Use WinTab
    UseSystemStylus 0
That worked to get pressure sensitivity to work whether or not the Windows ink box was checked but didn't fix the jagged lines.
I'm not sure I understand the second part of your instructions about turning off gestalt's functionality (Not even sure what that is) Is there supposed to be a PSUSerConfig.txt file because there wasn't one until I just saved the one I made.  Is any of this even going to fix the jagged lines or is that a whole different issue?
Everything works just fine in Photoshop CC 64bit

Using the PS CC 2014 with Intuos Pro tablet -- the lagginess is significant.
Switching back to PS CC x64 demonstrates problems with the new PS version.
Are there some preferences or changes to system that are needed to correct the problems?

Sorry, no solution to the problem, but a confirmation. I do have the same problem (Intuos Pro and Pen & Touch) showing the problem with ACR 8.5 and Photoshop (2014, CC and 6, these were updated with ACR 8.5) . No such problem before ACR 8.5 and no problem with LR 5.5 (also containing ACR 8.5).
I hope there will be a solution from Adobe soon, since sems to be caused by the ACR update.
Windows 8.1 in my case and latest Wacom Intuos driver installed.

  • Problem with Wacom Tablet and Brush Tool

When using the brush tool with an Intuos 5 tablet (mostly to edit layer masks), PS will become unresponsive to pen input - that is, I can't draw. The cursor moves, and I can switch tools with the keyboard, but pressing with the pen to tablet does not register. If I click with the mouse, it will register. If I use the spacebar to get the grabber hand then click and drag, the pen will again become responsive. If I click on a palette with the pen, I can draw again.
I have been in touch with Wacom, and at their suggestion, I have:
    1. Downgraded the driver to the previous version.
    2. Reinstalled the driver.
    3. Connected the tablet directly to the computer rather than using a hub or wireless kit
This problem also occurred on my previous computer (mac pro 8x2.8ghz, os 10.8)
When using the same tablet with my laptop, the problem does not occur, nor does it occur when using a Bamboo tablet on the Mac Pro.
I don't see the problem occurring with other tools, but I don't use them as frequently.
One other thing I should mention is that I'm working on very large files (2-6G) but do have 64G of memory installed.
    Currently using:
    Mac Pro 8x2.93ghz
    Mac OS 10.9.1
    PS 13.0.6
I've been back and forth with Wacom via email for about a mothh, and I suspect they are out of troubleshooting options. They suggest the problem is with PS, but I'm not really sure.

    Hi CoGordo4,
Make certain you have "New Art Has Basic Appearance" checked in the Appearance Panel menu.
Also realize that the "Basic" brush, isn't really a brush at all. It simply removes all brush appearances from a stroke.

  • Photoshop cs3 and cs4 brush lag /snow leopard 10.6.6

Having occasional brush lag using these apps. Not due to wacom, does same with mouse. Discussions going on at adobe forums. I have ATI 5770 in mac pro 2.8 quad. Don't want to update to 10.6.7 due to font/pdf issues. Spoke to apple person, who couldn't say if the new update had specific fixes for graphics drivers. Anyone having same problems?

?Did you have a PowerMac before, and did you use the Migration Assistant?
How about some normal good system maintenance?
CS3 on a Mac Pro running SL may or may not work the best on mid-2010 Mac Pro.
Your mac by default was set to boot into 64-bit kernel mode. I assume you switched to 32-bit.
How about RAM and storage setup? disabled Spotlight and moved primary scratch to non-system drive?
To elimiate any confusion, change the "PowerMac" to what you have, a Mid-2010.

  • Crop and brush tools jittery with Wacom tablet

Immediately upon installing LR CC 2015 many of my functions using a Wacom Intuous 4 tablet have become jittery and slow. The crop frame wants to jerk around and keeps rotating with no input from me. It is difficult to cancel using Esc key. Slow and jittery also describes various brush operations, including Heal/Clone.
Am using the Yosemite Beta, but was also doing so with LR 5 (2014) and did not have any of these problems.

I'm having a similar issue on a Windows 8.1 machine, also using an Intuos 4, and a Bamboo Pen on our other machine. Not only are the tools jittery, but the pen will only "grab" sliders in the develop module about 20% of the time. This makes editing with a tablet near impossible. Any ideas what might cause this?

  • Cs4 brush lag - problem solved

I downloaded the evaluation version of Photoshop CS4. Like many others, I found it unusable. The main problem was an enormous lag in using the brush: when painting, I had to wait for several seconds to see the result.
I tried all suggestions: update drivers for graphics adapter, update DirectX, hacking the registry, deactivating antivirus software.... No matter what I did, with or without OpenGl drawing activated: the brush was terribly slow, unusable really...
So I gave up and went back to CS3: works like a charm, no problem. A shame though, and regretting some nice CS4 features.
Wanted to give it 1 more try, and this time looked at some BIOS stuff. Tried a few things with no luck UNTIL ..... enabling palette snooping. That did it: CS4 flies, no more lag..... feels even a bit faster than CS3.

    I Feel everyones pain!!!!
After using Photoshop CS4 since it's release with virtually no issues and really enjoying the new features I started Photoshop this morning and experienced all of the issues in this thread!
    Extremely slow and lagging brushes.
    Jittery Zoom tool operation.
Text - very slow! I could type a 5 letter word and sit back in my chair and wait for it to catch up!
    etc. etc.
If this would have been like this when I installed I would have immediately reverted back to CS3, completely unacceptable!
Turns out Microsoft update installed a new set of NVIDIA drivers!
I went to the NVIDIA site and downloaded the latest drivers, installed them and now everything is good again.

  • Photoshop CS4 brush cursor bug on Thinkpad T61p

I've got a Thinkpad T61p with a Nvidia Quadro FX 570M onboard (driver version: 6.14.11.7471). There seems to be a bug with the graphics driver in conjunction with the new Adobe Photoshop CS4. Photoshop now uses GPU-optimization with more brush capabilities. Unfortunately the cursor clips when using brush-sizes larger than 64px. One can see the bug on the nvidia cs4 promotion "brush resizing" at http://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe_photoshop.html. Nvidia corrects this bug in newer driver versions, but lenovo only offers a WinXP-display-driver from 2008-04-28.
Does anyone know any workround? I've tested somo older forceware drivers (178.24) with partial success. The display bug in Photoshop is fixed, but e.g. After Effects CS4 crashes while detecting the GPU.
Message Edited by mikey on 10-23-2008 03:20 AM

Today I've installed the latest Forceware Drivers 180.60 from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ to test the bug behaviour.
The brush cursor now seems to be able to handle big brush sizes but the performance is reduced noticable. When painting inside a new document the rendering of the brush path is done after painting over the area, even when using small brush sizes.
So let's wait until Nvidia/Lenovo roll out a new driver.

  • Mac OS 10.4.3 freezing/locking up with Wacom tablet and driver

Hey guys, I have recently purchased the Wacom Intuos3 6x11 tablet and now my PowerBook freezes after like 10 minutes to 2 hours I plug it in. So far I have tried removing and installing different drivers. I have also have reinstalled my system (erase and install, custom no printer drivers and foreign languages) I have run permissions repair, disk repair, Extended Apple Hardware Test, and I have also rest the PRAM - I'm running out options. I don't have any other drivers installed yet, only some apps like Adobe CS2, Alias SketchBookPro 2, Painter 9. The system runs fine without the driver but it makes the tablet useless. Also the tablet runs w/o any issues on my Windows machine (XP pro).
Oh, I have also re-calibrated my tablet and still nothing.
The lock-ups happen no matter in what application I am in or what I'm doing.
    Any ideas?
Also, Wacom tech guys have no idea what to do with this one.

I've been running with that tablet since October with no problems on my G4 800 Dual, except for an annoying scrolling problem in Safari. You might try launching Console and leave it in the background and see if any messages show up when the problem occurs. You might also check the system.log in Console and see if you spot anything in there, though that is harder to sort out. Also in Console take a look in ~/Library/Logs CrashReporter section and see if there are any crash logs involving the tablet. You might also run the hardware test disk to see if it spots anything wrong. It could be a problem with the USB plug.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extreme Lag?

    Hello everyone!
I've been a fan of Adobe for quite some time and started using it the first day in my new school. (We were given laptops with CS4 installed for free.)
Now the thing is, 2 years has gone and I've recently gotten a new computer and I recently bought the Adobe CS4 Masters Collection. It's a great package and it was definetily worth saving my money for and tons of begging, my parents finally gave in. However, aside from Photoshop CS4 ALL programs work extremely smooth and I'm learning a lot.
Photoshop CS4 does not unfortunately. I will try to explain this as thoroughly as possible. Whenever I try to write text or change tool it always comes up a "Progress" box loading what I'm doing, for example if I just want to make a text box and write "Hello." it will take forever:
This is a print screen of me writing the text: "Hello." this is around 3 minutes in... I recall that Photoshop does not normally take that long to process writing that text nor changing tool... what is happening? Below are my PC specifications:
    Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3300MHz
    16GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Also, since I'm using an SSD harddrive to boot up I made sure that my 'Scratch Disks' are not on my bootup harddrive which is C: so I configured it to look like:
And yes, I did try to turn off OpenGL. No changes. I did try the original scratch disk to be C. No changes. I did play around with the RAM usage, no changes. I really need help, it feels like a big portion of my money was tossed into the recycle bin.
Also I did try to use the program with the Default settings, it has been like this from THE START. I've tried using both the 32bit and 64bit version but still nothing.

    >> recently bought the Adobe CS4 Masters Collection.
It's been about 2 years since that was available for sale.
Where did you get an obsolete version of the suite?
Now about performance: Did you notice that your document is zoomed out to 1%?
You've got a HUGE document. Most likely you made a mistake in the resolution of the document and typed 2000 inches instead of 2000 pixels or something like that.

  • Photoshop CS4 Extended, issues with resolution and font sizes on Mac

I have Photoshop CS4 Extended, which worked fine on my old 15 inch Macbook Pro, I think it was 2011 and had high definition display.
I now have a new 15 inch 'late 2013' Macbook Pro with retina display (2880 x 1800), and OS 10.9.4
    I have 2 problems:
    1) Using photoshop now, the resolution is a lot worse than with my old computer, even though my screen is higher resolution.
For example, the images themselves are worse resolution on my display, far less crisp and more pixelated than any of my other programs. And even the windows such as 'save as...' screens are terribly pixelated also. Is there a way to fix this?
    2) When using the type tool, I cannot find how to change the size of the font. There used to be numbers which I could change, and also select the font type, both on the top menu bar always visible. Now there is not anymore. What there is there at the top, is what looks to be a bar on top of another bar. The top layer bar is on the left and reaches about one third of the way across the top, and I can drag it by its corner so it can extend more, but not less. It looks like there are things behind it which I cannot see, because it is over the top of them. Perhaps the text size and font options are stuck behind that. What can I do?
    Many thanks!
    Justin

Hi JJMack, you said "Seems like you want a low resolution display hook and external display to it." I do not know what that means. I did a google search for "low resolution display hook" and it came up with zero results. Also I do not have an external display, only my laptop.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue? I would greatly appreciate any solution.
    Thank you!

  • Why is it photoshop CS4 worked flawlessly with my fonts in Snow Leopard, but are making CS6 crash in

I transferred all of the fonts starting with 'A' into font book and all of them had either a yellow or red dot next to them. They all worked fine in photoshop CS4. What gives? Will Adobe fix this and make them compatable? I have a fortune invested in fonts I'm not about to toss. What are Adobe and Apple going to do about this? Who's issue is it really? I am not the only one having his issue.
    Thank you for any input.

And what fonts exactly? If you're using fonts from the stone age this may be unavoidable. Beyond that a single "bad" font can drag down Adobe apps, which does not necessarily have to be the one you use currently. It's mere existance and PS stumbling over it when populating the fonts list would be enough... The rest is in the details, but as always, start by removing all your fonts and adding them only back on an "as needed" basis. and if you realyl have that many fonts, using a font manager might be advisable to keep lists neat and tidy...

I have problems with printing direct from Photoshop CS4, then I look in the "Page setup" it looks fine - then I press "Print" - "Scale to Fit media" - "Print..." the images only fill 10% of the paper. The printer is by default ( I have tjek it in the setup ) set to "A4" paper format -

    Easy peasy!
Yeah for John ! Never thought of that shortcut. I think you meant right click - 'open link' in new tab ? I don't have the option 'open image in new tab'. Thanks, I was using Chrome @ the time, which unfortunately doesn't have this option, yet.

  • Photoshop CS4 not working with Maverick?

I downloaded Maverick last night after using Photoshop CS4 all day. This morning when i tried to launch it, i got a message saying i needed to download Java SE 6 runtime. I said ok, it tries to install, but i keep getting the same error "Can not download software due to network error". I called Apple Support and they said if the software worked with Mountian Lion then it will work with Maverick I was told to call Acrobat. I did and they told me it was Apple's issue. After searching online it seems that it is Apple's issue. I tried downloading the SE 7 runtime that didn't work. Not sure what to do at this point. Any help would be apperciated.

    Here is the photo :
I use a spyder to correct my display color. It seem to be blocking me from chaning the accelration.
Could that be causing the problem ?
