Photoshop CS4 does not start

Hi there,
I just bought a web premium CS 4 suite. I am able to use all the other programmes however I am unable to use the photoshop CS 4. On start up, while it loads "reading preferences", another pop-up window appears with the message "Adobe Photoshop CS 4 has stopped working"
I know this question has been up several times. I have read through all of them and tried all methods but to no avail - I have tried deleting the preference file by the ctrl alt shift and manual method. I have disabled my anti-virus.. however i still cannot start my programme. any more advice to offer?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, this is probably a year toooo late but better late then never
Try clearing your perf file by selecting CTRL, Alt, Shift during PS Start up. You have to be quick with the open timing. A screen should pop up asking if you want to reset. Hit yes. A conformation should pop up after.

  • Photoshop CS4 will not Start

Hi, i'm usually quite responsible when it comes to making sure my system can coap with what i am asking of it, but i've ran into a problem that my computer just can't seem to get around, and means that photoshop cs4 will not start up.
I've been making .PAT files from a few pattern sourcebooks i've recently brought. The first two went fine, but a japanese sourcebook contained 250 reasonably hi-res pattern images which i put through an automated action which set them all as patterns for me for the Pattern Overlay option in beldning options. When i did this i noticed my computer started to slow down near the end of the process, so i saved out the .PAT file from them, and quit photoshop to free up over 2.10GB worth of data. I have 4GB on a 32bit XP, but only 2 and a half-ish is seen by windows due to the hardware installed aswell. Of course i plan to chnage this to 64bit soon, but anyway, when photoshop now is told to start up, it reads everything normally, then gets to "Reading Preferences", and crashes with an error report, which watching my task manager, i belive to be linked to memory shortage from having to load the patterns up.
I reset my preferences to see if it would set them all back to default and not read the added pattern files, but that made no difference. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance!!

I'd look into doing a couple of tests:
1.) Move those PAT files elsewhere
2.) Eliminate all programs and Processes, that are unnecessary. Task Manager>Processes will give you a list of all that load, and you can probably stop half of them with no ill effects. I'd use MSCONFIG, so you can go back and easily activate them later.
3.) Reboot and see what happens.
Note: John's suggestion on the Presets folder might address #1, but I'd also physically Move them. It sounds like you're running totally out of resources to run PS, so Textures, and such, might be an issue too.
A question: how are your Scratch Disks setup and please tell us about your I/O sub-system, i.e. the internal HDD's, their size, free space, speed, controller type and how these internal HDD's are allocated. Especially tell us if you have any physical HDD's partitioned.
    Good luck,

Did you download the Basic/Free version?
I also thought the Trial period was as long as you needed!?
What is your Warranty and Return Policy?
You get to use VueScan for as long as you want before you buy it, so we recommend you test it before you buy it to make sure it meets your needs.
All sales are final and there are no refunds.
Isn't this a bit harsh? Naah I actually prefer to solve problems, and if I offer refunds, people give up too easily. If I can't solve your problem after you send a few Problem Reports (see above), I'm happy to give a refund.

  • Photoshop CS4 does NOT use RAM as scratch disk

Photoshop CS4 does NOT use RAM as scratch disk
as far as I can tell.
I have 20 GB RAM and still Photoshop uses the hard disk as scratch disk.
    (OS = Win 7 64).
Can I force the use of RAM as scratch disk?
    /Larry

    Hi PECourtejoie,
I really try to understand this, please.
I don't know if 'Hitting the hard disk brings unacceptable slowdowns in my workflow'.
Because I don't know what unacceptable slowdowns are.
Any operation in Phshp takes time, and you always want it to go as fast as possible..
I know that if Phshp only worked against RAM instead of constantly saving to (and reading from) the hard drive it ought to go faster.
But I still don't know if this is the case, because there is a constant use of a tempfile on the hard drive's Scratch disk!
So far I understand that Phshp may BOTH work in RAM AND save data to the hard drive Scratch disk.
It could be possible that the writing to the hard disk happens when Phshp is idle from other tasks and that the reading only happens when data has disappeared from the Cache in RAM.
That could be a scenario where a Scratch disk on Hard drive doesn't  interfere with Phshps performance, and an explanation why we should not bother about the Scratch disk on the hard drive.
But I would very much like to have some confirmation on this, IF this is the explanation of how the Scratch disk on a hard drive works without influencing Phshp's performance??
Everybody just seem to assume that Photoshop uses (some) parts of RAM as work space - I just need a better understanding of this. And some correct descriptions.

  • After Successfull Installation of Photoshop Element 3.0 On Mac OS 10.6.8, Photoshop Elements does not start saying that personalization information is invalid or missing

I have installed Photoshop Elements 3.0 from original disk on my MacBook Pro with Mac OS 10.6.8. The installation was successful. However, when I try to run Photoshop Elements, it does not start, with the message "Could not complete your request because of missing or invalid personalization information". I uninstalled Adobe Elements and deleted all Adobe files from both the System Library Preferences and from the User Library Preference. Then tried the installation again. The installation was successful, but the application fails to start with the same missing/invalid-personalization-information message.
    Please advise

I am sorry Invalid Personalization but Photoshop Elements 3.0 requires a PowerPC processor or Rosetta installed in order to function.  You can find the system requirements at System requirements | Adobe Photoshop Elements.
You may want to try following the steps listed at Mac OS X 10.6: If you need to install Rosetta to attempt to install Rosetta.  That may still not resolve your licensing issue however as the application was also designed for Mac OS 10.2.8 and 10.3.

  • Photoshop 32bits does not start up anymore on Windows 7 64bits.

    This is the situation:
We have 2 PCs that have been configured identically, with the exception of a scanner (canonScan 9950F) attached to the computer and the 32 bits twain scanner driver installed.
Both PCs worked correctly, the one with the scanner attached started 32 bit PhotoShop when there was need to scan. But for some obscure reason, 32 bits Photoshop does not work anymore. I have tried disabling the twain driver (by moving it out of the plugins directory), restarting the machine, updating to the latest software, but despite this, Photoshop does not start anymore... no beep, no crash, no nothing.
I deinstalled Photoshop, Reinstalled - same phenomena.
At least the Event Viewer of Windows has something to tell, even if it is not quite understandable to me:

May be someone out in the user community has a solution? Needless to say, that the second machine works fine!
    Lucien.

The Photoshop executable really should be showing 12.0.4.0 as the executable version should have been updated by the updater.
I'm sorry for the really basic question, but did you reboot after installing the 12.0.4 update?
I do vaguely remember a few forum posts claiming the updater had only worked partially, though in my own case it updated all the files no problem.  Can you recall whether you changed anything under the Photoshop 32 bit installation area (e.g., did you move or remove any of  the Adobe plug-ins, for example)?
If memory serves, the workaround for a "partial update" was to uninstall Photoshop, then reinstall 12.0.0, then update to 12.0.4.

  • Photoshop CS4 does not recognize raw photos taken with newer cameras. Anyone else have this problem?

Photoshop CS4 will not recognize RAW2 photos taken with my new Panasonic Lumix FZ100 camera. This camera is listed in Adobe's 6.2 Camera Raw update for Photoshop CS5 but cannot be loaded in CS4. I paid a lot of money for CS4 and don't want to buy CS5 just because I bought a new camera, but it appears that Adobe no longer updates Camera Raw for CS4 or with newer cameras. When I called the Help Desk to find out if there was some kind of patch I could get to make CS4 compatible with my new camera a gentleman in New Delhi informed me that he couldn't even answer my question until I paid $40 since answering questions about CS4 was a "paid service." I hung up in a rage. Does anyone else have this problem and is there a solution?

This camera is listed in Adobe's 6.2 Camera Raw  update for Photoshop CS5 but cannot be loaded in CS4.
Adobe does indeed not update obsolete versions of Camera Raw for new camera types.
And guess what: It’s the camera producers who seem to like to change their raws – so how about spreading some of your indignation their way?
I paid a lot of  money for CS4 and don't want to buy CS5 just because I bought a new  camera
The upgrade is cheaper than buying the full version.
Anyway, you could try the free DNG Converter which should be able to handle everything the most recent version of Camera Raw can handle.

    Hello,
our customer has problem with PS Elements 12. He can start it for the first time and everything works fine. But when he closes the program and tries to start it again, it will not start. It doesnt even say anything. No error mesages or anything. He tried to instal a trial version of PS E 13 and it does the same thing.
    He's running Win 7 SP1 64 bit
    Any sugestions? Thank you.

    Hi,
It has been known that the Welcome screen sometimes fails to close properly and prevents a second load.
Most people have overcome the problem by creating a shortcut direct to the two main applications.

  • PHOTOSHOP CS4 DOES NOT RECOGNIZE MY SCANNER

I just installed Photoshop CS4 64 bit in a new computer with Windows 7.  I downloaded and installed Twain Driver and Epson Scan Utility v3.04A as recommended by Epson for my Epson Perfection 4990 Photo Scanner to use with Windows 7.  The scanner works fine as a stand alone and works with Microsoft Paint, so the drivers seem to be installed correctly.  But when I open PSCS4 and go to file/automate, the scanner is not seen.
I spoke with Epson tech support who tells me I am missing a 64 bit twain plug in for PSCS4 which is required for the scanner to be recognized by PS.  They said there is no problem with 32 bit, but I need to wait for this 64 bit Twain Plug in to be released by either Adobe or Microsoft in order for this to work with my set up.
What are people doing with PSCS4 and Windows 64 bit and Epson scanner?  I realize I can scan outside of Photoshop as a work around, but this is not ideal.  Any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Matthew Kraus

As John Joslin suggested... try VueScan. Excellent scanning software, very reasonably priced, unlimited upgrades, less than U$ 100. Just check if your scanner is supported (i just checked and it seems to be).
    http://www.hamrick.com/
I used to use it and found it excellent. In fact, one of the cool things was that i could do all my scans in one session and then open the images in PS when i wanted / needed to work on them.

  • Fireworks CS4 Does Not Start Up

I have been using Fireworks CS3 for over 1 1/2 years with no
problems. I have the new Fireworks CS4 installed, and it will not
load. The splash screen loads, but nothing initializes, and after a
short period of time, the application closes and an support message
pops up asking me if I want to send an error report to Adobe. I
have sent the report several times. I have looked through the
forum, and tried using the removal tool, reinstalled, but I still
have the same problem. Photoshop CS4 and other CS4 applications
load perfectly. Does anyone have an idea of how to solve this? In
the mean time, I am back to using my old dependable Fireworks
    CS3.

    Derren,
It happens every time. I have tried restarting my Mac, no
good. It does work when I install it and use it under another user
name with admin privileges. Someone else suggested my OS Admin
account was limited, which is totally impossible, as it is the
original and only admin account I have had since I purchased the
computer, until I set up another account for testing purposes.
And to answer your other question, yes, I far exceed the
minimum requirements to run CS4. I have been running CS3 since the
middle of 2007 with no problems.
I wish I could find the answer to the problem, but Adobe has
been of no help whatsoever. I have emailed them at least 10 times,
and they ignore me. Since I cannot try the new version properly,
since they will not help me to make it work, it looks like they
lost me as an upgrade customer. I'll stick with CS3. I will say I
am very disappointed in their customer service. i have been an
Adobe customer for as long as they have been making Photoshop.
If you have any suggestions, please let me know, I would
    appreciate hearing any ideas.

  • Photoshop CS4 does not release RAM

I run Photoshop CS4 on a Windows PC with 4GB. Even though I frequently
"purge", Photoshop does not seem to be releasing RAM even when all files
have been closed, often holding on to some 2GB RAM. Only when I terminate
Photoshop, the RAM it grabbed is released. This means I would have to exit
and relaunch Photoshop many times a day.
    Any suggestions?

    >the RAM is reused
Yes but since PS claims the RAM (for very good reasons, I agree) it seems only available to PS itself, so sometimes a plug-in (like PTlens) reports that it doesn't get the RAM it needs. Only one normal camera file is open.
    After relaunching PS it works.
Sometimes RAM actually seems to get released within a session, why that happens, I don't know.
I have no problem with PS working this way. I appreciate PS wants RAM that's contiguous and thus doesn't want the O/S to hand it out, but some parts of the workflow call for external plug-ins to join in.

  • Lightroom 3's "edit in photoshop CS4" does not preserve "detail" values

    Hi all,
I am giving lightroom 3 a try (finally...), but noticed that when I have an image to which I have applied "detail" adjustments to reduce luminescence and color noise, using "edit in Photoshop CS4" opens the image without the detail adjustments applied. I don't see the option to pick whether to edit "the image" or "the image with lightroom settings" anywhere, and I'm scratching my head trying to find an option in the preferences (both LR and Catalog prefs) that lets me pick "edit with lightroom settings applied".
    It's a bit useless this way =/
Does anyone know how to make "edit in ..." for lightroom 3 always apply the image corrections to the edit copy?

I had been looking for that option, turns out the only way to get it back was to reset all warning dialogs. After telling LR to render with lightroom, things look great again.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
this is a known issue that some users seem to run into.
The workaround is to delete the application on the device and then reinstalling it.
Note that deleting it is very important - a reinstall from iTunes does not normally help.
