Photoshop CS4 extended freezes on startup for up to 10 mins

Hi,
When I select Photoshop to start, it has suddenly started taking an inordinate amount of time to start. This has been timed at 10 minutes!
The blue loading screen appears and it stops at the point where it is reading preferences.
No other design suite programs are affected.
If I open an image in Bridge I can access Camera Raw and open Photoshop from the "Open Image" and this tends to be quicker.
I have tried resetting the preferences. I have tried reinstalling Photoshop, and made sure it is updated fully.
The only changes that were made were the manual installation of a Plug in (NAPP Watermark Creator 1.0.5).  This would not install correctly via the Extension Manager, I copied a folder to the  Program Files (x86) / Adobe Photoshop CS4 / Plug-ins / Panels / (Watermark folder goes here) and the file WatermarkService.jsx to the C: \ Program Files (x86) \ Common Files \ Adobe \ Startup Scripts CS4\ AdobePhotoshop / (WatermarkServices.jsx file goes here) both in accordance with the instructions from the creator. Both the file and folder were removed from these locations when this issue began.
Additionally, I had changed the Scratch Disks settings in the Performance Preferences as suggested to not include the boot drive (C: drive)
and assigned another disk with more than 60GB of free space to this.
Resetting the Scratch disk setting to the original C: selection and restarting Photoshop makes no difference.
Once Photoshop does load there are no problems with its usage.
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Andy Wallace

Well just to point out something.
By noting that it is effecting both the 32 bit and 64 bit version you pretty much verified that its more then just a application plug-in issue.
See while both are named Photoshop. they are completly seperate applications using completly different dlls, configurations and even plugins. The 64 bit version does not care what you installed into the 32 bit version's plug in folders and by your description you only added the plug in manually to the 32 bit. it does not use them and they likely would not work and would be ignored even if you put them in the 64 bit plug in folder.
Is there anything you changed that would have effected both 32 bit and 64 bit photoshop?

  • Photoshop CS3 Extended freezes on startup - Windows 7

    Hello,
Recently Photoshop CS3 Extended freezes when I launch it on my Windows 7 (64 bit) computer. The splash screen appears but then it just stops working (usually on initializing Tools). It then asks to exit or search for help.
I have read several things so far. To fix it I tried:
    - disabling the TWAIN plugin
    - resetting all tools
    - deleting the Photoshop preferences file.
    - deleting my printer from the control panel (some others said printer drivers could cause it)
But all of these did not help. Please let me know how I could fix this. It is not nice having a deadline and not being able to guarantee Photoshop will work.

    Thank you for your replys!
@Mylenium: I have not recently changed the graphics driver, anyway, this post will contain some more detailed information.
Since the system does not hang (it is only PS) I could take a screenshot of it:
    And yeah, the message from the event log was very helpful indeed, I should have looked it up earlier ^^;

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended freezes on startup under Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit - No splash screen

I installed my licensed copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended today as part of my install a bunch of software after a reinstall of Windows (due to viruses).  I did a completely fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.  I've used Photoshop CS3 Extended for quite a while now so I know what to expect on startup but it was previously installed under Windows XP Professional (32-bit). Figured I would give Windows 7 a chance this time around.
Google searches aren't turning up anything.  When I attempt to start the application, I get a window with the title "Adobe Photoshop CS3" (no "Extended" - I seem to recall the title changes later) and the toolbar appears.  However, no splash screen appears and no Product Activation wizard appears - the application simply freezes on an empty frame and a toolbar.  I've tried running Photoshop as Administrator (right-click, "Run As Administrator"), but nothing changed there.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling.  I tried upgrading to CS3 10.0.1.  Nothing works.  The application simply freezes before it gets anywhere.
I tried calling Adobe Support since this technically falls under installation issues but their phone support systems are down today.  Go figure.
Edit:  I hooked into Photoshop with the Visual Studio debugger and every single thread is executing some variation of WaitForSingleObject() or WaitForMultipleObjects().  The main thread is "executing" somewhere in AdobeLM_libFNP.dll (at address 09619d81 - if I had debugging symbols for CS3, I could provide a function).  There are nine threads "running" at the point the freeze occurs - but all of them are technically suspended due to the functions they are executing - and one thread is in a suspended state.

My Visual Studio analysis was far more informative.  All threads are hung inside of WaitForSingleObject() and WaitForMultipleObjects() calls and the DLL in question appears to be FlexNet-related.  I did forget to mention that I also even manually started the FlexNet service in case, for some strange reason, Photoshop was waiting for it to start.  That also did not work.
(And there is nothing in the Action Center control panel either despite the message saying there might be more information there.)
Edit:  The timestamp above might be a little odd-looking.  I didn't originally see anything in Event Viewer until I clicked the first button to send an Error Report.  Mostly I just skipped that part of killing a process.

  • Photoshop CS4 Extended popup on startup

    Hey guys,
Recently, I got some help in getting the latest patch for PS and drivers for my graphics card so I could work with 3D modelling etc. Once all that was updated however, I kept getting this dialog box pop up every time I started Photoshop. It's mildly annoying, and I usually click "No" every time, but I'm getting tired of it. I cannot figure out what more it wants from me, since I have the latest drivers and patch. The message is:
Adobe Photoshop CS4 now includes graphics card acceleration. We recommend you visit your video card manufacturer's web site to download and install the latest drivers. For more information, see http://www.adobe.com/go/kb404898. Go there now?
This page is just a notification about the features and limitations of GPU and OpenGL in PS, which is well and good, but why does it keep suggesting that I update my drivers? I'm guessing PS is reading that I cant accelerate my graphics card, because it thinks I don't have the latest drivers. I have access to enable the OpenGL function etc, but no clue if this message is really all that important. Should I just check the "Don't show again" box and go about my business? What do you guys think? Here is a screen shot of the box.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Heya Zeno,
Lol well thats annoying, at the least. Here I was concerned that after you helped me update my drivers etc, that I still had problems. I'll just check that box then to get rid of it. I would think that everyone reads it at least once, the first time they get it, then probably ignore it after that. Besides, why do I need to know a speicific topic in the forums to help me when I know you've got my back? Thanks for letting me know it's nothing serious though, I do appreciate it. Now on to becoming a PS master so I can go learn about InDesign

  • Photoshop CS4 extended upgrade problems.....Help!

I am using Photoshop CS3 (registered and activated) on my old computer.
I built a new computer and want to install CS4 extended on it. I purchased a Photoshop CS4 Extended update from Amazon for $342.99. During installation of CS4 on my new computer I entered the serial number. The next page that pops up is Upgrade Check that asks: 1) Select product that you already own: The only choice is Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended and 2) it asks for the serial number. I am upgrading from Photoshop CS3, not the extended version, so it will not accept my serial number. Photoshop is installed on a trial basis right now.
I tried installing Photoshop CS3 on the new computer but that did not help and CS3 did not recognize the CS2 installation disk that I put in the CD drive to prove that I was allowed to install a CS3 uprade.
The new computer I am trying to install on is an Intel i7 920 processor on a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P motherboard, with 12Gb RAMM, a Sapphire Toxic Radion HD 4870 graphics card, and running Windows XP pro 64 bit. I installed the operating system on the D drive. This computer is not setup to connect to the internet.
I am also trying to install Adobe CS2 Creative Suite (everything except Photoshop), but the CS2 installation does not recognize the Adobe CS1 disk 1 when I put it in the CD drive as requested.
This is all very frustrating considering how happy I have been with my Adobe software all the way back to Photoshp 5. I called the 800-833-6687 number and after playing phone tree for a while was informed that I was calling outside their hours (at noon on Sunday) even though the webpage I got the number from says they are available 7 days a week.
It was bad enough that after spending $195 to upgrade to Photoshop CS3, 3 weeks later Adobe announced Photoshop CS4.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Steve

You do like making things complicated don't you?
From your message I deduce that you purchased an upgrade that is not in the upgrade eligibility path from the version that you had.
It's not logical but then what is these days in Adobe marketing? The only solution seems to be to get back on the telephone.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended, owned for ages, licensing for this product has expired? Was using it two months ago.

    Hello,
I have been trying to get Adobe's help for over a month now. I've been on the phone twice to them, opened up three seperate cases and still arrived at no solution. I was bought Photoshop CS4 Extended awhile ago and use it for my studies (I'm an art student). Two months ago my harddrive on my computer failed and I had to have a new laptop. I went to reinstall Photoshop and "Licensing for this product has expired" comes up. I've uninstalled, inreinstalled many times and used Microsoft Fix It Programme for uninstalling to make sure all the files are gone.
Surfing the forums I learned that there should be a folder with back up and Adobe PCD but I don't have that folder at all. The serial number I use is my original serial number that I know works and adobe have even said it's a technical error. What do I do? College starts again in two weeks and I don't have the programme I use for it!

Try the License Repair Tool Adobe - Adobe Licensing Repair Tool
Other suggestions if this doesn't work: Error "Licensing has stopped working" | Windows
Also if you must uninstall, use the Adobe CS Cleaner tool, not the Microsoft one. Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

My current Camera Raw 5.7 for Photoshop CS4 Extended does not support Canon EOS 6D. What can I do? Will there be a Photoshop Camera RAW for that?

You would need Camera Raw 7.3 or later to open those files. Adobe is not going to update CS4. You can either get a newer version of Photoshop that comes with a current version of Camera Raw, or you can use the DNG converter to save your files down to the ACR version that works with CS4.

  • Cancelled Serial Number for Photoshop CS4 Extended

In 2010 I purchased a copy of Photoshop CS4 Extended.  I have been using it happily ever since until last weekend when I made the mistake of upgrading my PC to Windows 8. I reinstalled Photoshop and all worked well until a few hours later a message came up saying that my Serial Number was invalid.  I contacted Adobe on-line chat service and went through my problem in detail.  They confirmed that there system was saying my SN was a fake.  I was asked to contact the Piracy department which I did sending them scanned images of the CDs and packaging showing the serial number etc.  That was at the beginning of the week and I am now left with a locked out application and no way of escalating the problem.  I have been told that eventually the piracy whiz kids will contact me.
Has anybody had this problem before and does anybody know how I can actually talk to a living being in Adobe.  I have spent hours trying to find a telephone number that I can use to contact the piracy department.
It is just as well photo editing is not my main job!!  The kids would be starving.

Vanwell did you purchase the software originally from Adobe?  If not have you tried contacting the reseller who sold you Creative Suite 4?
Our piracy team will likely investigate the details but it is likely you will need to work with the seller of the software if you wish to obtain a refund or be compensated for your purchase.

  • Photoshop CS4 Extended, issues with resolution and font sizes on Mac

I have Photoshop CS4 Extended, which worked fine on my old 15 inch Macbook Pro, I think it was 2011 and had high definition display.
I now have a new 15 inch 'late 2013' Macbook Pro with retina display (2880 x 1800), and OS 10.9.4
    I have 2 problems:
    1) Using photoshop now, the resolution is a lot worse than with my old computer, even though my screen is higher resolution.
For example, the images themselves are worse resolution on my display, far less crisp and more pixelated than any of my other programs. And even the windows such as 'save as...' screens are terribly pixelated also. Is there a way to fix this?
    2) When using the type tool, I cannot find how to change the size of the font. There used to be numbers which I could change, and also select the font type, both on the top menu bar always visible. Now there is not anymore. What there is there at the top, is what looks to be a bar on top of another bar. The top layer bar is on the left and reaches about one third of the way across the top, and I can drag it by its corner so it can extend more, but not less. It looks like there are things behind it which I cannot see, because it is over the top of them. Perhaps the text size and font options are stuck behind that. What can I do?
    Many thanks!
    Justin

Hi JJMack, you said "Seems like you want a low resolution display hook and external display to it." I do not know what that means. I did a google search for "low resolution display hook" and it came up with zero results. Also I do not have an external display, only my laptop.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue? I would greatly appreciate any solution.
    Thank you!

  • How do you make a 3d octagon in photoshop cs4 extended?

How do you make a 3d octagon in photoshop cs4 extended that you can map artwork to? I've been searched online for a solution that doesn't involve using a 3D program but can't find anything. Can't you extrude a shape like in Illustrator, or exporta true 3D shape from Illustrator that will work? I'd use Illustrator but the mapping thing is finicky, and doesn't alow wrapping images around angles. (now someones going to say: "Don't mention any other programs in a PHotoshop forum!" Yeah yeah, there should be a forum then about using different Adobe programs together.) End of rant, any suggestions much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Thanks for your prompt response!
    Suggested Bridge Update
It turns out that I got a message that this update had already been installed, which led me to more carefully look at the Bridge window and (finally) see that the Output module had a Quality dropdown: Full, 300 ppi, 150 ppi, 96 ppi and 72 ppi.  Thanks!  I decided to compare the CS4/Bridge results to those I got in CS2 with its convenient File/Automate/PDF Presentation/Multi-Page Document routine that I like.
My project was an 8-page PDF made from scanned pages of handwritten notes into which some fairly small type had been insert using the Photoshop CS2 Type tool.  In Photoshop CS2, I had settled on "medium quality" JPEG compression as giving a "reasonable" file size (about 7 MB) and "very good/excellent" image quality.  I experimented with making the PDF in Bridge, using all five Quality levels.  See table below.  The Bridge "good minus" file was about the same size as the file produced in CS2, which I judged to be "very good/excellent" and slightly better visually than the 300-ppi, 23.5-MB Bridge file.
    Bridge Quality:
    Full
    300 ppi
    150 ppi
    96 ppi
    72 ppi
    File Size:
    25.2 MB
    23.5 MB
    7.6 MB
    3.2 MB
    2.1 MB
    Subjective Quality:
    Very good
    Very good
    Good minus
    Poor
    Useless
I appreciate that you may not be all that interested in these observations, but it seems to me that Adobe has done us no favors in the multi-page PDF department in going from CS2 to CS4!
Install the Old Contact Sheet/Picture Package Plug-Ins
I had already done this some time ago, in order to get in CS4 the File/Automate/Contact Sheet II feature I liked in CS2.  It does not appear to me that this plug-in has anything to do with make multi-page PDF's.  Perhaps I'm missing something.
    Again, thanks for your response!

  • Photoshop CS4 Extended and Lion 10.7.4

Does Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended work on Lion 10.7.4? when I get the "Licensing for this product has stopped working" and I advance to where I'm to click on the License RecoveryLauncher.app it does not appear. A file called License Recovery Launcher does appear with the circle with the line through it.

Since this post is 4 months old, but for some reason only appeared today,  assume problem solved.

  • Photoshop CS4 Extended - error 150:30 - "LicenseRecoveryLauncher" not supported on Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10

I recently upgraded to Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10
When I try to open Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended it says error 150:30 Licensing for this product has stopped working.
I followed the help advice which says to download some software to mend the problem but it wont launch - error message You can’t open the application “LicenseRecoveryLauncher” because PowerPC applications are no longer supported.
How can I fix the problem?

OS 10.7 and above uses the python script (.py) which is included in the License Recovery kit.
    Mac OS X 10.7
    a. Double-click the LicenseRecovery111.dmg
Note: Leave this window open and proceed to the next step.
    b. Double-click your Hard Drive.
    c. Double-click Applications.
    d. Double-click Utilities.
    e. Double-click Terminal.
    f. Type “sudo python “
Note: There is a space following “python”. Do not press Return.
    g. Drag LicenseRecover.py from the LicenseRecovery folder onto the Terminal Window and press Return. Note: Make sure that the Terminal window has the command and the path to the APP file. For example: "sudo python /Volumes/LicenseRecovery\ 11.6.1/LicenseRecovery/LicenseRecover.py”
    h. Enter your administrator user name and password when prompted and click OK.
    i. Follow the onscreen instructions.

  • I can't install Adobe Photoshop CS4 extended at all

I downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended (Trial Version) from the Adobe.com website through Akamai downloader. Well, i tried to install it clicking on the set up, but it started to install and a few minutes later stopped and displayed a error message. The message, without error code identifications, just informed that there was an error during the instalation and Adobe bridge and another one could not be installed.
I tried again and it started, but when it was almost finishing another message appeared warning that "there was an error during the instalation(again no code error identification) and that Photoshop could not be installed.
I follow some tips like shutting down the firewall, AV,  but it didn't work. I used the system restoring so that i could completely clean up remaining files and tried to reinstall it, but again nothing.
    Has anybody any idea?

I decided to format the computer again. Perhaps, some problem during the system instalation may have caused this problem. After that, i'll try to install it and see what's gonna happen. I've decided to do it because If it is caused by an instalation error of the main system, it may  also cause hassles when using other softwares. • 3D not accessible in Photoshop CS4 extended trial?

I have just downloaded the photoshop cs4 extended trial. I want to convert an existing photo to 3D however the entire 3D menu items are greyed out.
    Any thoughts please?

No idea. I can only speak for the full Master Collection and there it works when installed as a trial. I would assume that the standalone PS trial supports all the features, otherwise it wouldn't be PS Extended. Even more so, as the 3D part is Adobe's own concoction that does not involve third-party licensing rights which could possibly prevent them from having this in the trial...
