Photoshop CS4 new Smoother Image Viewing problem

Photoshop CS4 now appears to make images look smoother than ever, however, when I'm working on images which have hard aliased edges, the images look blury and actually make me feel like my eyes are out of focus. It's very disconcerting. I've not found a way to preview the CS3 way so I've had to revert back to using CS3 at work. This problem represents a show stopper for me.

I'm on the phone with HP tech support about this problem. He said he's gonna charge me to fix the problem and than he put me on hold. I'm waiting to find out how much money I've saved. You put some dollars in my pocket. Thanks!!!!!!

  • Officejet Pro 8500 and Adobe Photoshop CS4 64 bits Image Size Problem

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bits desktop computer. After installing the Officejet Pro 8500 multifunctional drivers all was working OK. Images were being printed nice and with the correct size using Windows print option. After installing Adobe CS4 suite, all images printed from windows or Photoshop have incorrect size (photoshop prints it smaller and windows prints it larger).
I've installed all photoshop patches and re-install Officejet 8500 drivers, but the problem persists.
I've also tried to make a clean installation of the whole computer from the beginning
Does anyone know how to solve this problem? What would be the windows/HP files that were changed by Photoshop?
    Thank you.

  • Photoshop CS4 - new report, old problems

    Hi there,
although i have posted many of the following problems in another thread, i will recall them here, because the other thread has gone slightly off-topic.
I have been "using" Photoshop CS4 that came as part of my Production Suite Premium Package for as long as it is out now and i have to say, that for me it is the worst release ever.
I work with Photoshop since Version 3 and every new release has had it's flaws that were fixed after a while. So i really hope this might also be the case with CS4.
So here are my System Specs again:
    Intel Dualcore E8600
    NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver: 180.48)
    MSI P35 Neo-2 Motherboard (Bios: 1.90)
    3 GB RAM
    Wacom Intuos 3 A4 (Driver: pro610-5)
    Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
The System is brandnew, the Windows-Installation is fresh, before the CS4 Suite there has not been another Adobe-Program on the machine.
While I am quiet happy with the other programs (Illustrator, Flash, After Effects..even Bridge is starting to become useful), Photoshop CS4 shows several glitches and problems on my system. These are:
    - If activated, the GPU-OpenGL setting deactivates randomly. There's no obvious reason for this, just in the middle of work, the rotate canvas-tool is no longer available, zooming is no longer smooth. While the box in the preferences is still checked for OpenGL and my graphics-card is recognized correctly, OpenGL features just stop working. After I close and restart Photoshop everything is normal again, until the next time settings are deactivated.
I am so far not able to trace the reason for this behavior, seems to happen quiet random.
    - No "marching ants". In the same matter, the "marching ants" of selections sometimes disappear. While this is not a big problem I think i should note it here for reasons of being accurate.
    - Brush tool stops working. I have this quiet a lot. While I paint, the Brush suddenly stops working completely. It produces neither strokes nor blotches anymore. In some cases hefty drawing can result in some strange straight lines but the brush tool can only be revived by restarting Photoshop.
    - Crashes. I truly honestly haven't had a crash with CS2 and CS3 ONCE. With CS4 crashes seem to be quiet normal at this point. The application simply freezes, mostly while using the transformation tool. Killing it via the windows task manager is the only option.
    - Slow redraw. All the above mentioned problems did occur with OpenGL enabled AND disabled. It really makes no difference. So deactivating this new thing doesn't convert Photoshop back into something useful, but into a slower version of CS3. Redraw of images is considerably slower on CS4 without OpenGL, than it was on CS3, although it gets better after some time working with it. Moving a maximized Image around feels very strange, because the build up of the tiles is somehow slow and sluggish.
    - Features I used are no longer there or no longer functional. I use Layer-Comps a lot. With activated OpenGL the Script "Layer Comps to Files" does not work. It produces an error-message that reads:
    Error 1: Unable to create Window - OS error (1400) Line: 234 -> dlgMain = new Window("dialog", strTitle);
With OpenGL deactivated it suddenly works... no idea why.
In addition some features like the automatic web gallery creation have been removed from Photoshop, but i figured out how to get them back.
While these are the really bad things about the new version (on my system that is, I heard from Mac-Users who are quiet happy with PS CS4 and keep telling me how fast it is on a Mac.....) there are other things, that i don't understand. I reckon, Photoshop cs4 is first of all a Mac-product and the PC-Version is somehow adapted or converted.
Proof of this for me is the new window behavior. Windows steeling focus and blocking sight on palettes is new for a long time PC-User like me. I also don't understand, why maximizing an image does fill the complete screen thus exterminatin

While I can not help remedy your problems, Pickman, I can tell you I have mostly the same problems as you. I am not the only one either. I hear this from my students. Marching ants disappearing is normal now, palettes hiding behind windows seems common nowadays. Photoshop losing focus, a document suddenly refusing to be the front one and having to minimize the other document(s) to have it back, lasso tool suddenly not showing it's tracing mark, it's all horrible. The error 'unable to create window' is very common.
I didn't even mention the fact that it's no longer possible to downsize the Photoshop window by it's top edge, which is utterly annoying when you have multiple windows open as I often have or the fact that when I scale the main Photoshop window, the documents stay in place and that the tooltips often don't work which is confusing for the novices that I train. I thought they had remedied that in CS3, but it's back in CS4. I have been using Photoshop since version 3 (briefly) then 4, 5 et cetera. This is one of the worst releases ever.

  • Photoshop CS4 new document dialog issue...

Can this Photoshop CS4 new document dialog issue be improved? Info in the pic.

there's a feature request section at the top of the fourm allen. these kinds of posts should be done in there, so the programmers and engineers at adobe have them all in one place.

  • Photoshop cs4 new system integration and network problems

    Hi there!
I am new to the forums, but I will just dive right into my issue rather than introducing myself:
I recently did a new hardware install (16 TB of clustered storage) at a mograph studio that are heavy users of Photoshop CS4, amongst other things.  Prior to the new storage, they primarily used an Xserve with attached RAID device, and CS3.  They are now experience high amounts of file corruption on PSDs from saving over the network.  I am, of course, aware the Adobe does not support network saving, due to the plethora of problems that may exist and the difficulty of recreating such varied environments.  I also know that neither Apple nor Adobe seem overtly concerned with this problem, although they may have fixed it with updates in CS3.  The users are aware of this fact, but continue to stress that they had "no problems what so ever on the xserve".
Basically, aside from the facts that are available in http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html and found on the forums, has ANYONE found an exceptable work around for these sort of issues.  Also, we tried the "save as" fix that was posted on these forums, and that did not work either.
Please, any help is extremely appreciated.  Thanks

If you have a working network and servers -- it can work. (and does for most of the servers inside Adobe, and those in my home)
But if anything (OS, network, server) malfunctions -- the process breaks in difficult to diagnose ways.
Photoshop is already following all the safe file save guidelines, testing for permissions, testing for space availability, etc.  But still things fail on networks.  And when we look into the failures, it's rarely the same cause and usually can't be worked around in any reasonable manner.
As application developers, we're frustrated too.  We know it can work.  We know it should work.  But some things are too far beyond our control.
Bottom line:  Finder and Explorer add a lot more error checking to server file copies, and do their copies in relatively simple patterns (unlike file saves that can involve random seeks and writes, depending on the format).  Saving locally and copying to the server afterward is going to be safer (adds at least 2 more layers of error checking).  The same goes for copying from the server then opening -- though we see far fewer errors reading from a server than writing to a server.

  • Photoshop cs4 and import to iphoto problem

    Hi to all,
I would appreciate any help on this problem:
I process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
In photoshop cs3 I never encountered this problem.
The only way I can solve it is if i open the jpeg file in preview and save it again as jpeg. then i am able to import the new jpeg.
Any ideas how to solve this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

process a raw file through camera raw 5.1 in photoshop cs4 and then save it as a jpeg.
I then try to import the jpeg file to iphoto, but iphoto says the file is unreadable and can't import it.
That's because you're saving it inside the iPhoto Library package and trying to import from there. You must save all RAW edited files to the desktop or outside of the iPhoto Library package. iPhoto will not import any file located inside it's library package.
If you use CS4 to edit jpgs from within iPhoto the following may be of help to you:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • MacBook Pro Photoshop CS4 not smooth zooming and fine lines are broken

I got a new MBP 15" about a month ago and am also running Win XP via bootcamp. On the Windows side Photoshop CS4 will not smooth zoom and if I zoom out, fine lines are broken apart and only partially show. When I go into the performance preferences enable opengl is checked and under advanced, advanced drawing is checked, but the use for image display is grayed out no matter what I do.
On the Mac side it works fine using either the 9400 or 9600 chipsets so considering Windows uses the 9600M GT which is the discrete one, it should work.
There's no driver updates here on Apple.com and Nvidia.com says there is an update available, but when it tries to install it says the hardware isn't supported... even though on the screen before it says it is.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated

    Anybody have any suggestions?

  • Photoshop CS4 Trial Bugs - Eraser & Text problems

Hows everybody doing...I recently downloaded the Photoshop CS4 Extended Trial and installed it on my computer...I am noticing some bugs and im not really sure if its just a bug in the trial version which will be fixed when i buy the program or if there was an error with the install...
I dont have screenshots at the moment since im not on the computer having the issue but i can get them if needed...
First lets start with the eraser tool...When i set the eraser tool as a size of say about 10px it works fine...However, if i zoom in on the image above its nautral size i start to lose the eraser...When i say lose the eraser i mean you can no longer seen the round area which will be erased..When you zoom in part of the circle disappears...It will still erase and area of the set size but its sort of hard to do erasing on detailed images when you cant see the whole eraser....
More bugs with the eraser....If i set the eraser to a larger size, say 30px or more, i right off the bat start seeing less of the eraser area....It will go from a whole circle down to something like a half moon with only half the circle being displayed...
This may be a little hard to understand so if need be i will get some screenshots of what im talking about later....
I am also having a problem with the text...For starters, i cant scroll through the text...When i enter text and highlight it and highlight the fonts i would expect to be able to scroll through the fonts while watching the actual text change on thet screen....I am unable to do that, i highlight the text and the fonts and CS4 will let me scroll maybe 4-5 fonts and then it just stops and wont scroll anymore...
Another issue im having with the font is the size....Whenever i enter text it is extremely small...Even if im working with a 200px x 200px image if i set my font at say 75px its tiny, tiny enough to where i cant even see it to highlight it....There appears to be something wrong with the sizing of the text...Just to get text to show up normally, at a readable size, i have to set the font size to 800px+ and this is on images which are only like 600px wide and 300px tall...Usually a font of 800px would fill up this image but when i do it the 800px font shows up like a 36px font...
Like i said if this is all to hard to understand i can get some screen shots later on...I wanna make sure this is something which can be fixed before i go ahead and drop 700+ on the program...

Yes i installed the patch...That was the first thing i did, before checking the video driver...The patch didnt fix any of the problems im having...The video driver update did however fix the eraser/brush issue...
I did what you said in post #1 about un-checking the option listed....When i did that nothing changed for me....
I have some more details about the scrolling issue though....From what i am able to find it seems that if i just enter digits i am able to scroll through the entire list of fonts and see a live preview of every single one....
With any sort of text it will only allow me to scroll through 5-6 fonts...You can see that it wants to scroll more when i hold the arrow down cause you can see the blue hightlight flashing and the words trying to change but it just wont go any further...At times when i hold the arrow down to scroll through the fonts it will scroll through 5-6 and then all of a sudden just go white and wont let me scroll up or not...At that point i have to select the font list and pick a font

  • Preview Image Viewing Problems

The OSX Preview application frequently displays images at a smaller size than actual. On images downloaded from the internet and images from my camera they may be something like 600px x 396px in Photoshop but they view at 226 x 148 in Preview. If I save them as a new file or export them from Preview and then open the new file in Preview, viola! they are back to 600 x 396. Similarly, if I open the photoshop file in Jpegview in Classic they open at the correct size of 600 x 396. I tried another image viewing application called CocoViewX and the same thing happens. What gives? -- Matt

    Hamvid:
Forgive me if I am not responding to your concerns, as your post is not entirely clear to me. So, a few questions, first, if you don't mind:
    1. Do you or do you not have an internal HDD in your iMac?
    2. If you don't, what storage media do you use for your data?
    3. I understand that your optical (DVD) drive is not operational. Is that right?
    Here are my suggestions:
    1. There are many excellent Hard Disk Drives that are available for your computer. Here are a few. Apart from being an excellent HDD, the Seagate drives come with a 5 year warranty. Drives are now faster and have greater storage capacity, and prices have come down considerably.
    2. Consider the purchase of an external Firewire Hard Disk Drive for backing up your data as well as for use as an emergency boot drive.
    3. For backing up your data you should clone the entier User Folder using a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. If your friend's computer supports Firewire, consider using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
my second question is of reseting my computer to it's factory settings.
I am not sure what you mean by factory settings. However, if you mean reinstalling Mac OS X, or doing a clean wipe and install without a DVD drive, you can,
    (a) use an external Firewire CD/DVD drive.
    (b) If your friend's computer supports Firewire you can do it via Firewire Target Disk Mode.
I think I just responded to your third question above.
If I missed anything, or if you have further questions, please do not hesitate to post back.
    Good luck.

  • Photoshop cs4 file/scripts/image processing settings

I have recently started freelancing for a local newspaper, as you can imagine i could have up to 100 images to process at the end of the day.
I started using file/scripts/image processing in photoshop cs4 to automaticly size my images. this is indeed fantastic instead of half an hour or sometime an hour it only takes 5 minutes...But... most newspaper print at 150dpi and the image processor does it automaticly at 72dpi, i need to change this setting to 150dpi in file/scripts/image processing (not to get mixed up with image/image size please).
    Can you help me please.
    Joey

I think you got the answer elsewhere.
Make an action to set the size and resolution and run that in the Image Processor or as a batch.

  • Photoshop CS4 install disk image won't mount

    Hi,
I just acquired Photoshop CS4, and after finishing downloading the instalation .dmg file, I tried opening it, and on two diferent computers it comes out as invalid. On my iMac, it gives out "invalid checksum" and on the MacBook, "codec overrrun". Fearing the file could have been corrupted during download, I downloaded again, but it renders exactly the same results. I cannot install CS4 and not find any reference to this problem. The file was downloaded using Adobe Downloader from the store, directly, and the other dmg files opened without problem. Only the Photoshop CS4 one doesn't open.
Does anyone have any clue on how to solve this problem? Any help is apreciated.
    Jessica

Being in Brazil, I felt it would be easier and faster just to get the download than having to guess if customs would bill me or not for something that cannot be billed ( which is, software ). But I asked the support if they can privide me with the media, even if at an aditional cost.
BUT, yesterday I managed to solve the problem. Despite the fact it doesn't say anywhere on the manuals, and it have never damaged any of my downloads, there's something that doesn't go very well between Adobe Download Manager and my Netgear wireless router.
I disconected the router and hooked the iMac directly to my service provider, and the download worked fine. CS4 is now installed and working. So, in case your internet goes trough a wireless router, or any kind of home network device, and you're having this problem, my advice is to try to hook your computer directly to the modem and try again.
Thanks everyone for the help, it was really apreciated. Now I did some 4 backup disks from this, so I don't have this problem again

  • Photoshop CS4 layers palette too wide problem!

    http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/6828/swatchesld2.jpg
The Photoshop CS4 layers palette is too wide and distorts the layout of the default color swatches palette when docked on the same column. And I don't want to have to put the color swatches palette anywhere else but the same column. Can the layers palette be fixed so that it can be as narrow as the other palettes, so it won't cause a conflict with the swatches layout?

As for the rescalability of panels I think this is more of a Windows issue, but even on mac these are nowhere near as well designed as they were.
Panel and UI design issues are now unfortunately more complex than just to do with Photoshop. The whole Creative Suite is now unified to some extent in the way it handles panels. Part of these problems stem from the fact that Indesign and Illustrator's concerns are quite different to those of Photoshop. Partly because the designers of these two applications have introduced a great swaithe of additional panels, which now need to be accomodated. Hence the panel buttons, and poorly docking panels.
The design of The Creative Suite interface now seems much more influenced by Flash Web design, and Windows OS. Unfortunately with flashing buttons, icons, and distracting transparency whenever you move anything, Photoshop appears on the surface much more complex than it needs to. This surface complexity will lead to further misguided accusations of "bloat".
Photoshop CS and CS2 in my humble opinion, had much more "solid" and well designed panel (or palette) interfaces. Although here and there there have been one or two useful additions to the overall UI, including more readily accessible workspaces, tiling, and obvious clickable icons for people who can't deal with keyboard shortcuts.

  • Photoshop CS4 : Printer name too long problem

    hi,
we have a special problem only in Photoshop CS4 when we want to print here.
When students wants to print their document on one of our printer, Photoshop is not keeping the printer selected correctly.
When we go in File --> Print...
The page "Imprimer" open and I select the printer : RN-CORRIDOR-D306-COULEUR(PS)
the (PS) is for the PostScript Driver.
then if we click on "Mise en page" (Page Setup) you see the name of the printer is now : RN-CORRIDOR-D306-COULEUR
this printer is the one with PCL driver.
I have these 2 printers installed on my computer. If I remove the PCL one, everything works correctly.
I have made some testing and I found that if the printer has more thant 30 character for the name identical with another one, it will switch to the printer above in the list in photoshop.
the name of these printers are in fact : \\sprint1\RN-CORRIDOR-D306-COULEUR and \\sprint1\RN-CORRIDOR-D306-COULEUR(PS)
and they appear like this in the listing :
    \\sprint1\RN-CORRIDOR-D306-COULEUR
    \\sprint1\RN-CORRIDOR-D306-COULEUR(PS)
So if I choose the PCL one, everything works fine, but if I choose the PostScript one, it will switch on the PCL driver. (it is impossible to print on the PS)
    Another test I made :
Create 2 printer locally on my computer with 2 names with 30 character identical and 1 different at the end, 2 completely different driver (HP 4050PCL and Lexmark OptraS1650PCL) on 2 different ports: same results, it swith to the first printer in the listing.
As I said, this is the only application that have this problem. Any other Adobe application or MS Office is working for now 3 years with these printers with more than 30 character in the name. And we can't change the name as they are installed on over 100 computers.
Did someone ever saw this ?
    Thanks
    Benoit

these printer are installed on our lab computer with more than 100 softwares installed.
the only application having this problem is Photoshop CS4.
Illustrator CS4 for exemple is correct, last version of Acrobat Pro too.
    Photoshop CS3 was ok before...

  • LR2.2 to edit in Photoshop CS4 yield lighter images in PS

I notice a problem since upgrading to PS CS4 from PS CS3, that when I select Edit in PS CS4 from within LR 2.1, the image that opens in PS is noticeably lighter by about one stop. I get the same result if I edit as smart object or as a TIF. If I make no changes within PS but just save the TIF file and then go back to LR, the new TIF saved from within PS and the original CR2 (or DNG) file appear to be at the same exposure when viewed inside LR2.1. I was hoping that upgrading to LR2.2 would fix the problem, but it has not. It is exactly the same.
I've checked all of my LR and PS settings and preferences and there is not additional processing that is being done when I edit in PS. It's really strange.
My monitor, an Eizo ColorEdge CE240W, is properly calibrated. I'm running a MacPro 8 core with Leopard 10.5.6.
I have exactly the same software and settings installed on my MacBookPro 15" but I do not have the problem there.
I tried uninstalling PS-CS4, deleting PS and LR preferences and reinstalling PS-CS4 to no avail. I did not have this problem with previous versions of LR and PS.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Photoshop CS4 brushstrokes smooth at first but become jagged after minutes

CS4 works great with the Open GL acceleration to make my brush strokes smooth
but after 30 minutes or so, my brush strokes will become jagged and pixelated looking.
I must restart Photoshop, or disable then enable Open GL in order to fix the problem.
Does anyone know what may be causing this erratic behavior?

Go to this website and download this free driver sweeper. It completely removes all the nvidia drivers. Then reinstall your new drivers. sometimes newer isn't better so you might have to try older drivers too.
Also if you completley remove drivers make sure you disable windows 7 automatic update. Automatic update might detect you needing drivers, download and install the drivers and you will never know it. These drivers maybe be old so it defeats the purpose.
    http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Guru3D-Driver-Sweeper/1248206693/1
Here is the download site for nvidia. I just used this as a example becuase you did not post if you had 32 bit or 64 bit system. If 32 bit just search for the drivers again. It is real easy.
