Photoshop CS4  Part 2

because someone had to go and spoil the previous thread and there is much to discuss!
Such as "Collections" in Bridge CS4 and its new Output Panel which lets you use any template, including the Lightroom ones, directly out of Bridge.
VERY nice!

Buko -
My complaint is not always PDF issues. It's only a part of the problem that exist when you want to repurpose files for a different device.
Actually today, I get a request to match a digital press and an Epson 9800 output. Numbers are the same, but the color is different. Light lime green is the color. PDF's are exactly the same. CMYK mode PDF. This instantly requires editing in Photoshop and saving back into the PDF if you don't have native files. Save Photoshop PDF file and you can't retain layered data cuz once you save the parent PDF - objects are done.
Fun....
So I happen to have the In Design document and can directly edit the images - IF - I have the links - I can do such edits. If not, screw you, and write out PDF's and extract images that way. Again, another generation of who the hell knows what flavor of image it was when it was given birth.
What I really love is when customers supply "copy + paste" objects within IN Design. They are not links and therefore are not editable - nor do they register to exist in the links pallet. But they are there and need to be edited... Sweet...
And then you have issues like vector elements that can't be picked apart for whatever reason, some vector objects come into INDY as copy/paste objects but as a whole sum object and not how the art was originally created. That leads to once again saving out a PDF and then opening it in Illustrator - raping the object, then stuffing it back in INDD to be able to perform edits such as scale, AND of course color change - cuz the designer can't understand the concept of spot colors and white ink interaction on color paper. Artist colors the file "paper color" cuz it's in the list of colors and she needs a stock color cuz her brain is an artist.
nice...
So - farther up the tube of wonders comes the simple concept of how was the CMYK files separated - why - from whom - what for - where is it going - and how many directions shall it be listed as acceptable art and for what purpose.
web, animation, 3D, medical, aerospace, and guess what - and I will tell you - everyone prints. I don't care who the hell you are and what you do - but I KNOW -you- print because you want something in your hand. Adobe has neglected this simple human intervention with said art and is not promoting good behavioral habits in a short tempered, get it done now society.
OK - now forget print for a moment and all that noise...
Reliability of RGB files is very low as far as handling of said files. Files come from all walks of life and when one goes a whacking due to various educational levels - you only have so much to work with. I think everyone here in these forums has had some kind of experience with receiving others files and are told to do something with them.
How many users REALLY KNOW WHERE the files came from and is it in the correct color space and did the user giving you the files was even aware of if it was converted, CMYK, or is golden ACR or RAW
Who the hell knows? Clearly not me. YOU?
So Buko -
It's way more then dealing with PDF files. It's much larger then my arrogant reflections. It's a bigger problem then Adobe itself.
IT's about reliability and usability for your needs.
I can't confirm files period - which makes my or any ones ability to make a file - better.
(fill in your quality requirements)
get it?
It's not rocket science and it's not even color science. It's implementation for mutiple users with common sense.
Just shoot me at that point... The masses do not understand file creation and content control - and we are creating more of a mess with each release without cleaning up the workflow.
It would only be fitting if I die sane.
I see beyond a lot of things -even my nose.
Yes you can create great art with Adobe products. No question. Problem is what happens when you give your creation away....
do you know without a doubt that whomever you give the files to - has the reliability needed to assist them in giving you back what you gave them?
I just don't know Buko, but I know...

  • Help: Photoshop CS4, Opens Adobe Help Website Automatically. Stuck in a loop.

    Hello there!
I am having an issue with Adobe Photoshop CS4 (part of Creative Suite Web edition).  Any action, including switching to the Photoshop windows automatically swaps out to Firefox and opens the Adobe help website.
My current action was converting a pentool path to a selection when the problem began.
I'm using Windows 7 on a PC.  Any help on how to resolve this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you.

Hi there and thank you for responding. :-)
I chose poor wording.  I wasn't using a predefined action when the problem started.  I used the pen tool to create a path and then right clicked to open the drop down, selected make selection and the error occured when the make selection dialogue box opened.
The Adobe help site then opened in Firefox.  Returning to Photoshop, even just by alt-tab swapping back resulted in the help site opening again.
Ultimaty, I didn't find a solution, and used the task manager to force Photoshop to quit/crash.
I've had the error pop up once or twice before, but it is infrequent.  I'd just like to try to find a preventitive method or solution, as so far, any time it's started, the only thing I can do is force Photoshop to quit completely.
I'm very sorry that I can't provide screenshots, but I hope that the explaination and additional system informaion might help.
    Additional Info:
I don't know if this will be of any help, but my hardware setup is as follows
Wacom Intuos 4 Tablet and Grip Pen Stylus. (The standard pen which is included with the tablet.)
Processor: Dual Intel Core i7 CPR 920 @ 2.67 GHZ
    RAM: 12.0 GB
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, 64 Bit
Graphics Card: Dual Nvidia Gforce 9800
And I am using Adobe Photoshop CS4, the version which ships with Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium Edition.

  • Trying to load my Photoshop CS3 onto new Mac Book Air. Why does it ask for InDesign CS4 part way through?

Loading my Photoshop CS3 onto new Mac Book Air. Why does it ask for InDesign CS4 part way through?  I have a CS5.5 disc. Will suffice?

that doesn't make sense.  you will only be prompted for earlier adobe versions when installing a latter upgrade version.
    double check your versions.
also, you might want to clean your computer before retrying to install, Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 Installation Error

I'm new to this site and my computer has Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1.
After I installed Photoshop CS4 trial, it failed to install Photoshop, but the rest were successful. I went to get more information and this is the message:
    Adobe Fonts All
    Error:
Error 1603. Error 1907.Could not register font . Verify that you have sufficient permissions to install fonts, and that the system supports this font.

If there is a topic similar to this one, then I shouldn't be here!

I have been using Adobe Photoshop CS4 for a few months now without any problems or errors.
But last week.. i had a virus problem and decided to do a Clean Installation of my Operating System.
I was not too worried because I have done this millions of times already... and know the process like the back of my hand.
Well.. after the clean installation was complete, i started to load my applications.
To my surprise.. Adobe Photoshop CS4 would not install. Nor would Adobe Illustrator CS4.
It would get to the screen "Adobe is beginig the installation process" and would stall ..
At first... i thought it would eventually complete on it's own.. but after a few attempts and hours of the same screen with no progress.. it was obvious Adobe was no longer responding at that stage.
I searched high and low, night and day, over a few days trying to figure out the problem.
    I was trouble-shooting everything.
In the middle of trouble-shooting, i took a break to surf the Net and see if i could find any suggestions when i ran into this Forum.
Someone mentioned disabling your Internet Security & Windows Defender.. and i thought.. no way.. it can't be that easy.
Well.. what do you know.. it was my Internet Security (Kaspersky Internet Security 2010)
After disabling Kaspersky Internet Security 2010, Adobe flew right pass the part where it was stalling, and finished installation without incident.
Adobe Illustrator CS4 also installed without any problems ...
I just wanted to share my experience as i know how frustrating it can be when software refuses to install.
Good Luck to everyone.. be patient.. trial & error. .. and im sure you'll figure it out.

    @ ApologetX
I had a similar problem when i extracted the contents of my Adobe DVD and made an ISO file out of it so i would no longer need the DVD for installation.
But what i realized is that.. Adobe will not install if it's installed from the ISO.. and during installation.. an error would pop up.. and ask for the DVD
You probably have done something similar.
Here's what i did to fix:
    - Extract the contents of Adobe Photoshop CS4 into a Folder
    - and install from that ..
After i extracted the contents and installed from "setup.exe" .. the installation completed without error ..
    DVD
    - If you're having problems from the DVD .. then try to extract the Contents of the DVD on to your Desktop..
    and install from there ..
    Trial Installer
    - As for the Trial you are referring to .. im not familiar with it ..
but try to extract the contents of it to your Desktop .. and go from there ..
    Good Luck

  • Photoshop CS4 crashing - 'Kernel Invalid Address'?

    Hi,
Can anybody help me ascertain why PS CS4 is always crashing? I'm running PS 11.0.2 on Yosemite, mid 2014 Macbook Pro, 16gb RAM, most recent crash log below.
As a possibly-helpful aside, I'm also having the same problem on a mid-2011 iMac, same software etc and always also showing '
    EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)...    KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000000000014c.
I've cleaned both Macs with Onyx, Uninstalled and reinstalled and updated PS on both machines. The new Powerbook has no new memory installed, the older iMac does have 3rd party RAM installed, on which I've run AHT (says fine on both) and I'm in the process of swapping the Ram chips in the older machine around to double check for bad RAM.
So as it's happening on both computers, maybe it's a software problem? I have no idea...
If there's anything in the crash log below which indicates what's going on, I'd be very grateful for anyone's help.
    Many thanks
    Steve

Thanks for your help Rob - I really appreciate any help with this as it's seriously affecting my ability to do my job.
So my Etrecheck is below - this is from my iMac, which if anything is the more problematic one. I've tried it in Safe Boot mode and it still crashed in PS. I do have Trusteer Rapport (3rd party 'man in browser' malware app) installed, as recommended by my bank, but have disabled it.
Could it be my pen tablet? I've updated to Wacom's latest driver but it's a pretty old model.
    Cheers
    Steve
    Problem description:
Repeated crashes on iMac when using Photoshop CS4 11.0.2 on Yosemite, mid 2014 Macbook Pro, 16gb RAM. This has always happened a bit but seems to have got much worse after upgrading to Yosemite, though this may be coincidental.
As a possibly-helpful aside, I'm also having the same problem on a mid-2011 iMac, same software etc and always also showing
    EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)...    KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x000000000000014c.
I've cleaned both Macs with Onyx, Uninstalled and reinstalled and updated PS on both machines. It still does it in Safe Boot Mode. I did have Trusteer Rapport, (a 3rd part ‘man-in-the-browser malware app’) turned on on both machines at first but I’ve disabled that and it’s still crashing PS. The new Powerbook has no new memory installed, the older iMac does have 3rd party RAM installed, on which I've run AHT (says fine on both) and I'm in the process of swapping the Ram chips in the older machine around to double check for bad RAM.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4/5 Crashes when using the Move Tool

Hello. I'm here because I'm having an issue with Photoshop.
I was trying out CS5 when it started to crash every time I tried to use the Move Tool. It was the generic error message: "Adobe Photoshop CS4 has stopped working.
A problem has caused Adobe Photoshop CS4 to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
Thinking that it was a CS5 issue, I went back to my copy of CS4, only to find the same thing happening there (I also downgraded because CS5 was also crashing at other random times for some reason, but that's an issue for another time).
This puzzles me because both were working fine before. Granted, I hadn't opened them for a while, but it was a sudden thing.
My first impulse was to uninstall and reinstall CS4. No luck. So then, I uninstalled all third-party plugins, thinking that might be it. Still, the same problem. I started looking around on Google for solutions and found the instructions on resetting the Tool preferences (I chose to reset the preferences for ALL of the tools). When that didn't work, I tried deleting the preferences file outright, which said instructions recommended. Nothing.
I should note that Photoshop crashes when using the Move Tool to move an object without ant lines around it, i.e., a layer. I'll move the object, and after two to three seconds, the mentioned error message will appear and Windows will close Photoshop. This, however, only seems to happen after selecting, copying, and pasting part of a large object with some variation of the Marqee Tool (thus making that part a new layer by default) while working at a zoom of 100%. So, in short, working with a large image like <a href=http://www.wallpaper4me.com/images/wallpapers/ergo_proxy_267_1280-862301.jpeg>This</a> at 100% zoom. The image linked is the image that I was using and am currently using to reproduce the problem. It is 1280x1024 pixels. I have tested this with somewhat smaller, yet comparable images too. Same problem. I have never had this problem working with large images before, and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions short of formatting my hard drive.

Even a decent RAM upgrade is usually only a few hundred dollars nowadays, but it's not a trivially simple process.  That said, with a little research and care you can do it.  Alternatively, you can hire people (e.g., "Geek Squad") to do such an upgrade.
First, you'll need to know what your operating system capacity is.  For example, a 32 bit Windows system can really only use up to a bit more than 3 GB of RAM, while a 64 bit Windows system can use all the RAM you can find a place to plug in.  What version of Windows are you running?
Then you'll need to determine what RAM you have installed and what your computer's maximum RAM capacity is - usually you can do this through internet research, either by visiting your computer manufacturer's web site or doing google searches.  There are even RAM manufacturer web sites that will tell you what kind of RAM your computer needs and suggest sources, for example:
    http://www.kingston.com/
It may be that you can just plug additional chips into currently empty sockets, or it is possible you'll need to replace the RAM chips you have installed in your computer to make room for an upgrade.  Every computer is different.
If you list your computer model and current RAM that you have installed here, it may be that someone can help with more specific advice.

  • Problem exporting to Photoshop CS4

I have recently been processing a large batch of images in Lightroom 3, and as part of the workflow I’ve been exporting directly into Photoshop CS4 for final adjustments.
I received the following pop-up after choosing to edit in Photoshop CS4:
“This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug in version 5.7 for full compatibility.
Please update the Camera Raw plug-in using the update tool available in the Photoshop help menu.”
The three options were: "Cancel", "Render using Lightroom" or "Open Anyway".
I clicked on "Open Anway" and also ticked the box “Don’t show again”.
Having studied the quality of the results I now regret ticking this box. The noise reduction does not seem to have been applied correctly and some images appear lacking in detail. I assume that if Lightroom renders the file then it will be much better quality. Unfortunately I can’t change it back to render using Lightroom because I ticked the “Don’t show again” box.
So my question is whether it’s possible to change the default option back to “Render using Lightroom” instead of using Camera Raw? Is there an easy way to do this? I have explored all the Lightroom preferences but to no avail…

Thank you! I knew there must be an easy way to do this but sometimes you just can't find things when you look too hard!

  • Photoshop CS4 Trial Bugs - Eraser & Text problems

Hows everybody doing...I recently downloaded the Photoshop CS4 Extended Trial and installed it on my computer...I am noticing some bugs and im not really sure if its just a bug in the trial version which will be fixed when i buy the program or if there was an error with the install...
I dont have screenshots at the moment since im not on the computer having the issue but i can get them if needed...
First lets start with the eraser tool...When i set the eraser tool as a size of say about 10px it works fine...However, if i zoom in on the image above its nautral size i start to lose the eraser...When i say lose the eraser i mean you can no longer seen the round area which will be erased..When you zoom in part of the circle disappears...It will still erase and area of the set size but its sort of hard to do erasing on detailed images when you cant see the whole eraser....
More bugs with the eraser....If i set the eraser to a larger size, say 30px or more, i right off the bat start seeing less of the eraser area....It will go from a whole circle down to something like a half moon with only half the circle being displayed...
This may be a little hard to understand so if need be i will get some screenshots of what im talking about later....
I am also having a problem with the text...For starters, i cant scroll through the text...When i enter text and highlight it and highlight the fonts i would expect to be able to scroll through the fonts while watching the actual text change on thet screen....I am unable to do that, i highlight the text and the fonts and CS4 will let me scroll maybe 4-5 fonts and then it just stops and wont scroll anymore...
Another issue im having with the font is the size....Whenever i enter text it is extremely small...Even if im working with a 200px x 200px image if i set my font at say 75px its tiny, tiny enough to where i cant even see it to highlight it....There appears to be something wrong with the sizing of the text...Just to get text to show up normally, at a readable size, i have to set the font size to 800px+ and this is on images which are only like 600px wide and 300px tall...Usually a font of 800px would fill up this image but when i do it the 800px font shows up like a 36px font...
Like i said if this is all to hard to understand i can get some screen shots later on...I wanna make sure this is something which can be fixed before i go ahead and drop 700+ on the program...

Yes i installed the patch...That was the first thing i did, before checking the video driver...The patch didnt fix any of the problems im having...The video driver update did however fix the eraser/brush issue...
I did what you said in post #1 about un-checking the option listed....When i did that nothing changed for me....
I have some more details about the scrolling issue though....From what i am able to find it seems that if i just enter digits i am able to scroll through the entire list of fonts and see a live preview of every single one....
With any sort of text it will only allow me to scroll through 5-6 fonts...You can see that it wants to scroll more when i hold the arrow down cause you can see the blue hightlight flashing and the words trying to change but it just wont go any further...At times when i hold the arrow down to scroll through the fonts it will scroll through 5-6 and then all of a sudden just go white and wont let me scroll up or not...At that point i have to select the font list and pick a font

  • Why is it  type in Photoshop  CS4 and I get Photoshop FxG extension for my search?

I'm using Photoshop CS4 on my Imac Intel computer printing on my Epson Pro 4000 printer. I just started using Colormunki calibration software to make ICC profiles for my printing papers on the Epson 4000 printer. I;m a little pissed due a month of workiing out all kind of problems from the Epson folks telling me how Apple change everything around  in Snow Leopard OS plus being told that the driver for the Epson 4000 only was for Leopard and the driver wouldn't work on Snow Leopard or if so have very limited printing features. Finally I spoke to one of the Epson tech people who told me that the driver for the Epson 4000 for leopard would support Snow Leopard OS
.In the past when I was using Leopard OS with photoshop CS4. I could go in, select let photoshop manage file, then turn off my color managment select my papers ICC profile and bang beautiful print. Now since I'm working in Snow Leopard I fellow the same set up and I get this terrible dark images like years ago when I first start printing on Epson printers. Where everyone use to open the file up about a 1 1/2 f stops to get the file to print close to what you saw on the computer screent. Then I discovered  the color sync part in Photoshop and bang I got exactly what I saw on the computer screen back in the old days..
I spend all day making color profiles from Colormunki software and device on my roll paper enhance matte pape and canvas paperss  with the color mangmenet off.  I would print using these new ICC profiles and I get the same terribel color I got before using this software when I made profiles from Epson Enhance Matte sheet paper thinking there might be a slight difference between my sheet Epson Enhance matte and my roll Epson enhance matte.
Here is the joke. I select like printer manage files whch grays out any ICC profile because Epson told me that Apple asked Epson to turn off the feature undetr let printer manage file and then select a ICC profile as Apple said due to double color managment.
\When I select like printer managment file I get a print that looks like what I have on my computer screen. Has anyone face this problem with Snow Leopard selecting like photoshop manage file, select perceptual , and turning off color managment and getting terrible color prints?

Found out the answer myself. All this to say that the driver for my Epson 4000 updated for Leopard which is supported for Snow Leopard.
I didn't realized I had updated my Snow Leopard to 10.6.3 and the Epson Driver is  onlly supported to Snow Leopard 10.5

  • Photoshop CS4, Win XP Pro, NVidia 9800GT

    Be forewarned!!!
If you have the above stated system you will have a problem from day one with the installation. After trouble shooting with Adobe using their infernal email system the end result is that Adobe's install routine for Photoshop is corrupted.
IF at a view scale of 100% of a graphic, say 20meg or so, you have slow response using the Marquee tool AND you use or do not use the OpenGL settings (it really does not matter) it is because of a bad install of PS CS4.
You will know this is occurring if you have Norton Systemworks' WinDoctor (or some other program) and it reports problems with various Adobe installed programs. AND these problems are not repairable by your utility.
The reported files that are missing are msvcr80.dll, msvcp80.dll, mfc80u.dll, and one other. They were utilized in CS2 and in CS4. And if you think you can just copy them over this does not work. The CS4 install utilizes newer versions of these files specifically written by them. Older Adobe versions do not repair the problem nor versions from other vendors.
Adobe's Expert Support Staff reported the following to fix the problem.
    1. Backup my 500gig hard drive to an online paid backup site.
    2. Format the hard drive. (I did this just before I installed CS4 as part of my standard install routine).
    3. Install Win XP Pro and all the Service Packs and everything else for Windows.
    4. Install Photoshop 6 and migrate up through the version of Creative Suite.
    5. Install the other 70 or so programs on my main system. And of course five of them are no longer supported by the vendors so I would have to pay for their Tech Support once again since it has been 30 days. Damn Copyright Issues!
    6. After the 2 to 3 days of backing up to the Internet (or purchasing another larger drive, AND spending the week to install all the software packages, proceed to the next step.
    7. Test the install to see if it fixed the Photoshop CS4 problem with the marquee tool.
All because of a poor install routine. You may notice this problem also if you double click on a PSD file, or other graphic file, and nothing happens or an older install of Photoshop starts. This was the clue as to what the initial problem was the bad install routine.
And I did not even go into the software bugs, reported to and known by Adobe, for Dreamweaver I discovered. They will fix them when they release Creative Suite 5(possibly) after I pay for the upgrade! NEVER!!!
    Wayne Webb
No Longer a Trusted Adobe User!
Give me back CS2 that ran!!! Oops. Copyright Issues Once Again.

nice rant, i only have one issue:<br /><br />>The CS4 install utilizes newer versions of these files specifically written by them. <br /><br />no. i can pretty much guarantee you adobe is not re-writing microsoft's mfc or visual c++ runtime distributable libraries. <br /><br />>1. My questions are: Does the PSD file have the printer information encoded?
Also why has this just started to show up? My wife has work successfully under the same conditions, files moved and printed on different printers, with no problems in the past.
I (we) have been struggling with a recent problem trying to print PSD files from Photoshop CS4. (Vista 32 bit, Epson 3880 networked) When trying to print certain, but not all, PSD files I get the message: "Before you can perform printer-related tasks such as page setup or printing a document, you need to install a printer." I have been in contact with Adobe support about the issue but with little in the way of positive results. I was referred to a kb link: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/409/kb409119.html Tried all that to no avail. (The first suggestion is absurd to the point of making me wonder what process is used to construct the kbs. You cannot open the print menu when you get this message so....?)
Other solutions are not acceptable for the work my wife is doing, editing high quality photographs for an exhibition with test prints and so on. We are under intense time pressue with four shows coming up in a very short time. The final solution offered is that CS5 has solved all of this. Hum? interesting. No comment except new program, new problems so not a real solution for us.
In searching the web about this problem I have come across many other people with the same problem working from different platforms and even different Adobe products. I noticed that the MAC OS seemed to cause the same problem and that there was a problem with Reader and Acrobat. In every case the problem is never solved by Adobe or anyone else and users find some "workaround". I too have found what we hope is a workaround in our contiued travels on the blogosphere, on flickr http://www.flickr.com/groups/wellington/discuss/72157621548183001/ as "...a nasty, nasty solution" but we skipped the flatten part and the GIMP part and resave the PSD under a different name.
Adobe does seem supportive but not that interested (CS4 right) but I would like to find a real solution and I think many people would benefit from it.
Anyway what I have found is that the PSD files that will not print have been printed on another printer at some time in the past. In my case the Printer was an Epson Artisan A50. The printer we are using now is the Epson Stylus Pro 3880. Even when trying to print wirelessly to the 3880 from the laptop (Was Vista, now Windows 7) that was used to edit and print with the A50, (USB connection) we saw the same error. So it seems that the printer information is somehow embedded in the PSD file (also mentioned in a Blog) and is keeping PS from seeing the printer because the same printer is not there.
Has anybody already found the fix?
I know this is a long post but I have been working on this problem and have heard all of the pat and frankly useless answers and workarounds. Can we find a solution and fix the problem?

Just a few examples, since you ask:

That attitude, Dr. Craig.  Plus the verbosity you unconscionably inflicted on your fellow forum users.

  • Photoshop cs4 and cs5 and after effects 7.0

    Hello my name is mel
My question ! I'm working with photoshop cs4 and after effects 7.0 building a web page and this going to be my first page . I got the header in and the footer also,
the main body is going to be this avi file. after effect project that I want to run when the page opens. I want to slice up and send to DW for coding . my question is how do you slice this page up and transport it to DW.cs5 and do you have to code the avi in html and css to run when the page is open. Because as now when you run the avi in photoshop nothing elese on the page works , just the avi runs when you turn off the avi then every thing is back normal .to run the avi you have go to the video part of psd and click on the start button . any idea or any suggestion how to proceded would help
    thanks

we were told in design school to use ps to design your site   then transport to DW to code??
Maybe I misunderstood you.... You do the graphics in PS, that's of course what everyone does and then you code in DW, but by all means, you do not operate on the atrocious code Save for Web would spit out from PS. Trying to fix it is more trouble than starting with a blank page in DW and inserting the background and otehr images manually. And you definitely misunderstand "animation" vs. "video" After Effects is just a means to turn animation into video just as Flash is a means of creating dynamically rendered animation or interactive content. Both have their uses, but without knowing what kind of animation or video you actually need to produce, this is going nowhere. It may turn out that all you need is an animated GIF, after all... Furthermore your AE 7 is dated and does not output good H.264 or FLV directly compared to more recent versions, so this opens up yet anotehr can of worms when it comes to producing good quality web video at small file sizes... In any case, you still require a lot of reading. Too complex a topic for which nobody can provide a tippy-toe tutorial and without understanding even some basic concepts, the most beautifully designed PS grafik will end up being nothing more than a useless lump of pixels on a web server...

  • Photoshop CS4 and save as PDF

Is there a way to make Photoshop CS4 save layers in a PDF that are accessible in Acrobat, InDesign, Illustrator?
I had to do an ad layout for a weekly newspaper and when I saved it as a PDF from photoshop, it retained the layers as long as it was opened in Photoshop but not in other programs. In desperation, I opened the file in Illustrator and saved it and the layers were there in Acrobat and Illustrator but of course not InDesign. I have InDesign CS2 which was part of the CS2 suite, so I can't upgrade to CS4 unless I purchase the full version. I rarely do ads, so investing the money and time in InDesign doesn't seem like a cost effective solution.
    Any thoughts?

No. But you can save a PSD who's layers will mostly work in Illustrator and InDesign.
The problem is that Acrobat, InDesign and Illustrator use a different transparency/compositing model than Photoshop and the video apps use. So the appearance can't be completely preserved.

  • Photoshop CS4 won't recognize file and won't save

Help!  I have Photoshop CS4.  I have had trouble in the past with photoshop not recognizing my raw files from Nikon (NEF).  Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't.  Now I can't get PS to save any file, jpeg or ps.  Can anyone help me please?

    • First of all, click on the following link and READ it in its entirety.  Then provide basic information.
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/419981?tstart=0
    • What exact version of Ps CS4 are you using?  11.0.2?
    • Exact version of the OS?
    • You are not working over a network, are you?
    • Have you tried creating a fresh, new account and logging in as a different user?
    • Have you Repaired Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility?
    • Check the read and write permissions on the folder(s) and volume(s) to which you are attempting to save.
This is the boilerplate text often used in connection to saving to a network (please NOTE the part where it explains that normally, it does work, but that it is impossible to troubleshoot someone else's network remotely, and that's why it's not supported by Adobe):
If you are opening files over a network or saving them to a network server, please cease and desist immediately in the event you are currently experiencing problems with one or more files. Working across a network is not supported.
    See:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/406/kb406793.html
Copy the CLOSED file from your server to your local hard disk, work on it, save it again to your local hard disk, close it, and copy the closed file back to the server.
Of course, the fact that Adobe does not support working across a network does not necessarily mean it won't work.   It should.
Adobe's position is that there are too many variables in a network environment for them to guarantee that everything will work correctly in every network, especially given the fact that if something does not work properly, it's probably the network's fault, and Adobe has no way of troubleshooting your network.
If you can't work locally, you are on your own, and if something happens, you're on your own. If you must work from a server, make sure your network administrator is a competent professional.
When problems arise, a lot of valuable work can be lost.

  • Photoshop CS4 on Vista not seeing 4 gigs of RAM

I am running Photoshop as part of the CS4 Suite on a bootcamped intel mac pro towers using Vista Business with 4 gigs of Memory. We are running in 32 bit mode because of the Apple screw up with Carbon 64 so that both sides of the house windows and mac match.
Photoshop is currently only seeing 1639 MB of the RAM instead of the performance on the Mac of about 3000 MB
So does anyone know what is going on here and how I can get Photoshop and or Vista to recognize most if not all of the RAM installed on these machines.
    Specs are below...
    Adobe Photoshop Version: 11.0 (11.0x20080919 [20080919.r.488 2008/09/19:02:00:00 cutoff; r branch])
    Operating System: Windows Vista 32-bit
    Version: 6.0 Service Pack 1
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:7, Stepping:6 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2
    Physical processor count: 4
    Processor speed: 2793 MHz
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
    Video Mode: 1680 x 1050 x 4294967296 colors
    Video Card Driver: nvd3dum.dll,nvwgf2um.dll
    Driver Version: 7.15.11.8048
    Built-in memory: 2037 MB
    Free memory: 1178 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 1640 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 55 %
    Image cache levels: 4
    Application folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\
    Temporary file path: C:\Users\MGD\AppData\Local\Temp\
Photoshop scratch has async I/O enabled
    Scratch volume(s):
    C:\, 349.4G, 324.0G free
    Primary Plug-ins folder: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins\
    Additional Plug-ins folder: not set

While Jim's suggestion is the only solution to addressing all your system's memory, I am surprised you only have 2037 MB (built-in) memory. Perhaps you are running processes or have devices attached which are eating into your memory by as much as .5 MBs?
I also have 4GBs installed ram. Right off the top, Windows strips 1 GIG to reserve space for Video Cards and other devices. I lose another .5 MB to the system.
This is a well-known limitation of 32-bit systems and like Jim says, there is little to be done except to upgrade to Vista 64. You can remove devices and stop processes and services, but you'll not ever see . . . at very best . . . 3.5 GBs. (Well, you might by using the /PAE switch, but that is more risk than I'm willing to play with.)
This is what my system looks like:
Operating System: Windows Vista (Ultimate) 32-bit
    Version: 6.0 Service Pack 1
System architecture: Intel CPU Family:6, Model:7, Stepping:7 with MMX, SSE Integer, SSE FP, SSE2
    Physical processor count: 4
    Processor speed: 3666 MHz
    Video Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Video Card Renderer: GeForce GTX 280/PCI/SSE2
    OpenGL Drawing: Enabled.
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280
    Video Mode: 1920 x 1200 x 4294967296 colors
    Video Card Driver: nvd3dum.dll,nvwgf2um.dll
    Driver Version: 7.15.11.7740
    Built-in memory: 2557 MB
    Free memory: 1281 MB
Memory available to Photoshop: 1640 MB
Memory used by Photoshop: 60 %
    Image cache levels: 4
Thus far, I've not encountered any problem using a 32-bit version. That is partly because I've not done anything with PS or other applications which might cause problems. But, as I do more with the Master Suite I expect that situation to change. Then, I'll upgrade to Vista 64.
I'm kinda keeping my eyes and ears open about Windows 7. Unless I encounter performance problems, I'd rather wait for the next version. According to rumors, the earliest date would be the end of the year, if not early 2010.
