Photoshop CS4 question (Tiles)
Sirs,
I have tried asking the Photoshop CS4 technical support a question which they are so far unable to answer - perhaps this forum can provide an answer.
The question: Located within Photoshop CS4 there is the option to install "Bigger Tiles". Several technical websites have stated that in is important to install the bigger tiles to improve the performance of CS4 and not installing causes Cs4 to run slower and less efficiently. So what is Adobe's opinion on installing the bigger tiles? To be clear - the option to install is included within Cs4 and the tiles are not an external 3rd party application - I say this to be clear since your technical support on the phone (4 times) had never heard of Bigger Tiles.

What follows refers specifically to CS4, but it's not from Adobe at all. Just passing this on, for whatever it may be worth:
Be clear on this: Adobe’s advice as of January 2009 is stale. Plugins that Adobe either doesn’t enable or even include by default are critical to performance!
Use the Bigger Tiles plugin in conjunction with DisableScratchCompress plugin. Failure to use these plugins results in a penalty of up to 50% on Mac OS X in any “decent” configuration (over 100% for Photoshop CS3). It’s bizarre that Adobe calls these “legacy” plugins, because they have a massive performance impact. Download the Plugins
Bigger Tiles is critical
The Bigger Tiles plugin in particular is absolutely critical to performance in most cases, especially with large files. Using Photoshop CS4 11.0.1, I measured these bizarre results with and without Bigger Tiles on both a 2.8GHz 2008 Mac Pro and a 2.93GHz 2009 Mac Pro Nehalem. I confirmed with Rob-Art at barefeats.com that same behavior; the culprit seems to be the Smart Sharpen function, which runs far more slowly without Bigger Tiles.
Even if the scratch disk is not being used (no disk writes are observed), using the Bigger Tiles plugin is essential.
Possible exception: if you use files with numerous (50 or more) layers, Bigger Tiles might or might not help, or could be slower. Test your own particular workflow.

Photoshop cs4 questions for snow leopard
Hello,
I am having a couple of issues that I could use assistance with:
1. I understand how to use a scanner from system preferences, but am trying to scan directly from Photoshop CS4.
Is there a way to do this?
2. I created numerous files on my PC in Photoshop CS that use 3 fonts which are not showing up on my snow leopard in Photoshop cs4. To substitute them changes the format, etc and is becoming a nightmare. Is there a simple fix for this?
3. On my pc, I am able to change file names, delete files etc from any program. On my snow leopard, I am only able to manage files from Finder. Am I missing something? Also, is there a way to cut and paste a file? I am only seeing copy and paste?
Thank you so much for your assistance!
This is my first time posting, so if I am doing something inappropriate, please let me know.1. It is widely recommended to scan from the scanning software, this is not only more reliable, it frees up Photoshop (add TWAIN to your search for more info).
2. The font will need to be loaded on the Mac. (Mac OSX may or may not be able to load Windows fonts, try dropping them in User> Library> Fonts and rebooting. Logging out/in or simply restarting Photoshop may also wake up the font so you may not have to reboot).
3. Get to know Finder, it is very clean and intuitive (it is your Operating System and you can't shut it off).
Try: Option+Click (on icon) +drag to new location and let off click to drop and copy in new location.
You will see a "+" on your cursor when doing it right.
Command+Option+drag puts a 'shortcut' Alias where you drop.
From there you may drag the Alias anywhere you want.
To locate the original: Click on Alias to highlight it, then Command+R (go to original)
Command+F is also very useful in 10.5 and 10.6 from Finder to search

Photoshop CS4 Experience, Problems & Questions
Hi all,
i just installed my Production Suite Premium on the following System (fresh install, clean System, no other versions of Photoshop):
Intel E8500 Dualcore
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GX2 (Driver Version 178.24)
3 GB RAM
Windows XP Professionel SP3
Photoshop has its own Scratchdisk assigned with at least 50 GB free Space.
I know that the 9800 GX2 is considered to be a "Gaming-Card" but as a freelance artist i work for the game-industry on many occasions and I need a decent gaming hardware to test what I am working on. As far as I know, the card meets all requirements for CS4 and Nvidia tells me, that their GPU's are perfect for CS4. (wasn't a problem with any version before, I use Photoshop AND Nvidia-Cards since Photoshop 4)
Here are the things that bug me:
- Photoshop disables the OpenGL Features on random occasions, stating, that it has encountered a problem. This happens either in Two GPU-Mode or One-GPU-Mode.
There's no obvious reason for any errormessage, because IF Open GL is activated it seems to work pretty good, zooming and rotating works quite well and fast. I noticed, that the problem happens either after saving my file or when i open photoshop.
- Photoshop crashed on several occasions mostly concerning heavy transforming of multiple layers. It simply didn't respond anymore in the midst of the transormation-process.
My guess is, that this is also linked to the GPU/Driver. System-Memory is checked, GPU works like a charm in all other applications. CS3 has not once crashed in one year, so i guess it has to do with the changes made in CS4.
Strange thing is, that even with open GL deactivated, the above written problems occur. I would have thought, that with OpenGL dectivated, Photoshop would somehow become kind of CS3 again, but it seems, there had been to much changes to simply disconnect photoshop from it's new OpenGL interface.
Apart from these two Problems, Photoshop CS4 is doing ok. It feels kind of sluggish compared to older versions, but that might also change with some new drivers.
Sad thing is, that the rotate canvas feature and the extended moverange for images, the main reasons why i upgraded to CS4, are only working with
OpenGL activated. I really hope there will be a fix in the near future.
There are other questions concerning PS CS4's usability:
- The Scale-Brush Feature uses alt + right mouse buttons, what seems kind of strange when using a stylus (Even more when using a stylus without buttons like the wacom layout-marker).
I would prefer another combination of keyboard shortcuts plus stylus movement ctrl + alt for example. so far i have not found a way to remap the keys. Am i missing something? Or is this impossible?
- Is there a way to get window behavior back the way it was in CS3? The new way of handling windows is ok, but i liked the old one better. If i disable "floating windows docking" there's no way to maximize a window INSIDE the photoshop workspace. The maximize button on top of every window is right now completely useless because it maximizes the window AND gets rid of all the menus and palettes. I don't see why i want to do that.
That's it. I hope this is useful either for the guys at adobe or for other users. Every new Photoshop-Version has had its problems, i hope that these will just be dealt with like the ones before.
All the best,
PickmanPhotoshop CS4 does cause crashes. I can vouch for that too. When it happens, the first instinct is almost always to assume that something is wrong with the computer and start from there. Comments to this effect are prominent in many threads. It is also Adobe's prevalent approach. So people experiencing these problems will tend not to post on these forums. Statements like 'because there are only a few posts, a significant number of people are not experiencing [these] problems' are therefore unfounded. There simply has not been time yet for people to resolve potential hardware/system problems.
In my case, I started experiencing unexplained crashed with CS3 in July (see below) but it was only when Adobe admitted that they could be partly to blame that I posted my experiences (elsewhere) on this forum.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, I have installed Photoshop CS4 on a newly reformatted HDD containing a fresh clean installation of Windows XP/SP3, fully patched, with everything working hunky dory, and no legacy installations of Photoshop or other CS software to worry about. All the same PS CS4 keeps crashing. The symptoms are unexplained total freeze ups occurring at random. I may get several hours use, sometimes a lot less, before I am forced to reboot and start all over again. Certainly the ability to do any useful work is severely compromised, and yes, the first inclination is to blame the hardware or system installation.
The thing is I had been chasing a similar, probably related, problem with CS3 (possibly caused by cloning my system drive, see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6bd8d/ ) while Photoshop was still activated, so I have had several months head start over anyone who may now be experiencing similar problems with CS4. As a result, Dell, whose support has been great throughout, have replaced just about every component under the hood of my PC, certainly everything that could be causing a problem. (GPU, CPU, memory, MB, PSU, disk controller, disk cables...). As a result, I am running a virtually brand new computer. Hardware and system problems have been all but eliminated. I have all the latest drivers for everything. It is virtually a brand new computer!
Yet PS/CS4 keeps crashing for no reason that can be established. Adobe have given me lots of homework to do to try to find out what affects it or remedies there are. It is all very tedious, but so far, nothing...
I am coming to the conclusion that there must be something intrinsically wrong with PS/CS4 that makes it incompatible with some systems and software installations, but not necessarily because of any fault with the latter. I have to say that, after initially trying to push me away, Adobe are being very helpful and clearly want (need?) to get to the bottom of this. The trouble is that when the system locks up, it is completely and utterly paralysed, so any diagnostic and error reporting systems are inoperative. This suggests something beneath or beyond Windows, and, if it is not hardware, this points the finger of blame squarely at the activation software, which uses rootkit technology. (Would this be the same on a Mac, I wonder?)
For the record, my system is a Dell Precision 370 desktop with Dell/Phoenix BIOS A08, 3.2GHz Pentium 4 CPU, Intel 925X chipset, 2MB ECC SDRAM, Nvidia Quadro FX3450 graphics, 2x Seagate 146MB Cheetah 5.5k disks (SCSI) in non-RAID configuration. From the limited experience I have had, it seems perfectly capable of running the software (apart from when it crashes, of course.) -
Photoshop CS4 CPU Question...
Hello,
I hope everyone had happy and safe holidays. Welcome to 2009.
I have a friend with a Pentium 4 system and she wants to run Photoshop CS4
Extended on it. Right now it only has 1GB of ram and while she plans to buy
a new system later this year, she would like to use the one she has now. She
can install another 1GB of ram, however the system requirements for PSCS4E
only states a 2GHz or faster processor. It doesn't state a minium specific
kind of processor.
So my question is will Photoshop CS4 Extended run on a fast Pentium 4
machine with 2GB of RAM, Windows XP Pro?
Thanks,
RobertBob, the problem is without knowing if it will install and run she doesn't
want to spend the money on the ram. Since Adobe doesn't state with the
requirements anything more than "2GHz or faster processor" and since a
friend of mine wasn't able to install until he added 2GB of ram to his
system we both want to make sure that it will install on a P4. Once we know
that she can then decide if she wants to spend the money on the extra ram.
If it won't install on a P4 (the installer like with the less than 2GB of
RAM won't let it) then buying the extra ram is moot and would be a waste of
money.

Photoshop CS4 Extended quick question
Hello,
My question is simple so I'll keep it brief. I'm able to buy Photoshop CS4 Extended via the University I go to, but I would only use the photography features. Does Photoshop CS4 extended work the same way Photoshop CS4 does in that regard, but with just more advanced features for video etc?
In other words, will Photoshop CS4 extended work the same was as Photoshop CS4 would with my photos?Kelevra9 wrote:
Thanks,
This is what I thought, but I wanted to make sure considering even with my student discount it's still upwards of $400 and with no return policy once opened.
Enjoy it you lucky guy!
Most of us have to pay a lot more, especially here in UK! -
Few questions about Photoshop CS4 Student Edition
I'm thinking of getting a DSLR camera in the summer, so (since I'm a geek) I want to make sure I've got all the software I'll need to edit the photos once I've taken them. The catch is that I graduate from university this year, so if I'm going to buy Photoshop (ie if I'm going to _afford_ Photoshop) I need to do so in the next couple of months to get the educational discount.
I've just got a few questions as to whether I actually need Photoshop CS4 for my situation:
*I already have Lightroom 2 (courtesy of Amazon Vine!) for processing RAW files, doing basic colour adjustment etc. Would I get £150 worth of extra usage from Photoshop CS4 compared to Lightroom?
*What DRM/copy protection does Photoshop CS4 use? Is it the same that's used in Lightroom 2 (hasn't given me any problems) or the Macrovision stuff that installs a background service (called something like 'Adobe LM monitor') on your computer?
*If I need to reactivate over the phone some time in the future (e.g. when I move to a new computer and I've already used the activations) do I still need to be a qualifying student?
Reckoned there wouldn't be a better place to ask these than PS forums :)>then you just don't know enough about photoshop.
Actually, if you had read the initial post you'd realise that I'm fully aware that Photoshop is hugely powerful. However it doesn't offer enough benefit for my usage (ie retouching of amateur photos) to make it worth the money + computer infection. My above post wasn't an attempt to say that Photoshop is bad, or that Gimp or any of these other freeware programs are even in the same league, I was just stating that my own need for Photoshop's power isn't great enough to make me want to install spyware.
>hmmm how about A PAYING JOB! i think that's what the clincher is for most folks.
True, but (again, as I explained above) I'm not a professional photographer/graphic artist/etc. and therefore there is no 'need it for work' motivation. -
Question about creating a link in a photoshop cs4 banner
Does anyone know the answer to this question??:
Does anyone know how to make a link clickable in photoshop cs4, say in a banner created in photoshop cs4, like a link to a website or an E-mail, without doing image map, but directly inside of photoshop cs4?? I need to know this ASAP!
Thank you,
JonHI Trevor.Dennis:
Question 1. Do you mean opening an image that I saved in Adobe Photoshop
CS4 to a folder on my computer?? Because I tried that and it wouldn't let
me do that.
Question 2. OR, since I cannot do that, how do I move an image from a
folder on my computer to InDesign??
Question 3. And then once in InDesign, how do I make links clickable??
Question 4. I'm enclosing a banner I made in Photoshop CS4 this afternoon,
and want to know how I can make
the Website: http://promoterpower.com and Email:
[email protected] in InDesign??
Let me know ASAP!!! -
Photoshop CS4 and Mountain Lion Printing Question
I recently downloaded CS4 onto my new Macbook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion and I am not able to print from CS4 to my Epson 3800 printer. When I hit the print button, the light on the Epson 3800 blinks one time but nothing happens. The file does not even get sent to the printing queue.
Photoshop CS4 otherwise works perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro Retina. Additionally, all other applications on my Macbook Retina print perfectly fine on my Epson 3800. For example, I can print from Aperture to the Epson 3800 just fine. I am using the most recent Epson driver from the Epson website.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Hi Peter,
Since your Epson 3800 printer is working fine with other applications, one workflow work around would be to export your Photoshop file as another format (for example .jpeg, .png, .tiff or even .pdf depending on what your content is). By exporting it as another format, you can open it using other applications (such as Acrobar Reader, or Preview) and print from there. While this is not the most ideal lsolution, it should do the trick if you are in a rush to print.
To help troubleshoot and solve this problem in the long run, you can take a look at this help page: Trouble Shooting Printing Problems, Photoshop CS4 Mac OS.
This helpful page lists all the possible things you can do to reset or fix the problem, it also lists a number of alternatives.
Hope this helps!

Photoshop cs4 serial nr question
Hi,
i got adobe photoshop cs4 extended as a trial on my pc.
recently was bought adobe photoshop cs4 (not extended), so should i uninstall extended version and install photoshop from new disc or not?
i asked because when i entered code from the disc i got red cross in the end instead of green tick.
Thanks in advance,
Alexalex-d
The procedure I mentioned in my initial post was EXACTLY the info I received from Adobe support. When I downloaded the Extended version the notes seemed to imply (if not directly said) that by purchasing and entering a S/N for a lesser version e.g. the basic version then some features available in Extended would not be available. Like you, having twice entered the S/N and having twice received that red cross I telephoned support. They told me to uninstall Extended (the installers for both apps are different) and do a clean install from the basic version on DVD which I had purchased via Amazon. I did exactly this and everything went without a hitch. If you are still having trouble it might be worth trying again to uninstall Extended but prior to installing from the DVD run a registry cleaner such as CCleaner (free) to rid your computer of any crap left over from Extended.
I must admit to having serious concerns with regards to Adobe. They've had a good few years to practice this, and are leaders in the market but still don't appear to get the simplest of things sorted out. Do departments actually talk to one another I wonder. :-( -
Upgrade from PSE8 to Photoshop or CS4: question
I'm confused about something. I have PSE8 for Mac. I would like to get Photoshop. Does this mean I have to get CS4? Is there a standalone Photoshop without all the other Creative Suite things?
Also I can't pay $700. Anyone know of any deals, or bundling with a Wacom tablet? (I'm not affiliated with any educational institution).
Thank you -

Photoshop CS4 is available as a "stand alone" application. But like was said, you won't find any real good deals like you mentioned, that are legal (as in not pirated).
Actually, it may be possible to find a 'good deal'--not through a normal commercial vendor and I would certainly stay away from eBay/Craig's List/etc. for a purchase of Photoshop CS4. It is just too easy to get a pirated copy.
I don't know how often it happens but I myself was in the position of having a legal copy of Photoshop CS4 that I no longer needed. I had PSCS4 on my iMac for quite some time and also had CS4 Design Premium on my PC. I finally bit the bullet and moved 100% to the Mac so I transferred the CS4DP package to the Mac platform via Adobe which meant I no longer had a need for the stand alone Mac version of Photoshop CS4.
If you have any computer/photography clubs in your area you might check there. It is possible you may find someone who is no longer using their licensed copy of CS4 who would be willing to go through the Adobe License Transfer process which would enable you to have their copy officially placed in your name. -
Question about custom color swatches in Photoshop CS4 Mac
Hello.
I have about fifty or so custom color swatches and wanted to back them up. Where are they located in Photoshop CS4 for Mac?
Thank you. They would be stored where you saved them to.
If you have never had the foresight to save them (Edit > Preset Manager) they would only be in the Preferences (»Swatches.psp«), I guess. -
Color Change Question, Photoshop CS4
Hope I'm clear with this description...
Say, you want to change a background in a given image from a certain blue to a certain yellow and then possibly back again....you're just curious as to which background would look better. Is there a command in Photoshop CS4 which, in effect, makes Photoshop "change color 'A' to color 'B' everywhere it appears in the image"? short of re-painting entire areas with a graphics tablet/mouse?
Thanks...Try using Image/Adjustment/Replace Color to do this.

Problem with Photoshop CS4 after migration to new Mac
I just migrated from an old Mac to a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks. I'm having a problem with Photoshop CS4. Specifically, two things:
1) When I open an image in Camera Raw, I get this error:
Fatal error - missing component
/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS4/Client/4.0.0/VersionCue.framework
2) When I try to save anything, it tells me it can't because of a program error.
I've looked around for a solution. Apparently I had to install Java, but that hasn't solved the issue. A couple of people mentioned that reinstalling would work for a similar problem. My problem with that is that my disk is on the other side of the world and my new macbook doesn't have a disk drive anyway. So I logged into my Adobe account hoping to see a download link for software I have licences for, but there isn't one.
So my question is firstly, whether there is a simpler solution to the errors I am getting and, if not, if there's a solution to reinstalling Photoshop CS4 without the disk.
Thanks!Did you use Apple's migration tool? It misses a lot of support files, especially in the Application Support directories.
You'll have to copy those files manually, or reinstall the app. -

On some systems I can set the defualt printer to another printer and when I print I then select the printer I want to print too, wiht no issues but if the printer in question is the default printer then CS4 just crashes. The Printer is a Ricoh 3260C. The printer is a network printer connected to a print server. Users have Admin rights on the local PC. If anybody has any ideas on this problem I could use some help. I have removed and reinstalled driver a few times with no luck. Even tried going back to old driver as well still no luck. All other adobe products seem to work fine.
Thanks
Adam RaffThanks for the help John but the problem is not that simple. One of my users now has no printer loaded when he starts Photoshop. when he starts it it says please install print drivers. I have uninstalled photoshop with no luck. Since this printer is the primay printer for the Art department I need it to print to that printer. I am using a standard PCL5 driver which is from 2008. there are no newer drivers I have also found that if I change the orientation (portrait or landscape) of the print then it will also print fine. If anybody has any ideas please let me know
Thanks
Adam Raff
