Photoshop CS4 - Saving file displays a Quicktime Preview Error

Hi,
I recently transferred my system from an iMac to a Macbook Pro (OS X 10.6.3). Everything seems to work except every time I now go to save a file in Photoshop (CS4) it displays a message: "Could not build a preview because of a problem with Quicktime"
I've searched forums, un-installed and re-installed Photoshop and still no fix. Even setting save Preview to 'never' in Photoshop Preferences does not help. Has anyone seen this? Is there a preferences or permission that I need to fix or trash in Quicktime?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your reply. I also tried reinstalling Quicktime X from the install disk (using the Pacifist application), still did not fix. I did however find that setting the Save preview preferences then closing and re-starting Photoshop does sort of fix the problem. With the Macintosh preview disabled the message does not appear so yes I would say it's an OS problem.
Would still be nice to know if there is an actual fix, as yet I haven't seen the error in any other application.
Update: I also found 'copy to clipboard' and 'paste into PS' also did not work! So after a day of erasing the MacPro hard drive and re-installing the OS and all applications from scratch everything seems to work correctly. Seems Apple's migration from one computer to another really doesn't work that well.

    That could make them up to 300 MB a piece, since that's the same format used by CDs. I would backup your data, and check to make sure the directory is in good shape as my FAQ explains:

  • Cropped in Photoshop but saved file can't be seen in iPhoto browser??

    iPhoto Preferences > General > Edit photo: > in Adobe Photoshop CS4
    When I open an image in iPhoto, and right click to open in external editor, then crop the photo and Save As, the cropped image does not show up when I browse iPhoto. When I command-click the title of the PS file, however, it shows me that the cropped file actually exists inside the exact iPhoto folder where the original picture is.
    I am having trouble understanding the basic idea of how iPhoto's library works and how PS CS4 interacts when you save an image.
    I want to keep using iPhoto as my one and only library, but this kind of behavior is crazy making. Can someone shed some light, or point me towards the right thread?
    Thanks!

    Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
    If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
    NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Photoshop CS4 Menu toolbar display bug and fullscreen slowness...

    http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/8202/menutoolsbugee3.gif
    I'm having a display bug with the menu toolbar in Photoshop CS4 Extended. Notice the area of tools is gone and replaced by random pixels? This happens whenever I enter the fullscreen mode that hides the interface. And when I exit that fullscreen mode, that bug appears and doesn't fix itself until I restart Photoshop. Can this be fixed?
    Image view rotation also happens much slower than normal in that fullscreen mode when interface is hidden. But performs normally after I bring back the interface.
    I'm on WinXP, Athlon 64 4000+, 3GB ram, GeForce 6800 GT video card [driver 169.21]. I'm not sure if this is a video driver bug or CS4 bug.

    Yeah, Dave, I can understand how that can happen. I've seen that sort of weirdness when I've seriously overtaxed my hardware.

  • Photoshop CS4 Ahmbed file

    I've downloaded Adobe Photoshop CS4 today and when I tried to open the "setup.exe" the ahmbed file comes up. I've been waiting for Photoshop CS4 for awhile and I just don't know how to get rid of this ahmbed file, I've tried deleting it plenty of times. I'm out of solutions, can someone please help me?

    If you downloaded (that is, purchased) Photoshop from Adobe, then you should call Adobe support. They offer free phone support for installation issues. I'm sure they'll be very interested in the "Ahmbed" issue.

  • Photoshop CS4 missing files after uninstall of CS3

    I upgraded the Adobe Creative Suite CS3.3 Design Premium today to CS4 on my MacPro. The upgrade went smoothly. After using the Adobe uninstaller for CS3 and starting Photoshop CS4, an error message appeared stating that required support files were missing, re-install Photoshop CS4. After a second Photoshop CS4 installation all is well.
    Apparently the CS3 Design Premium uninstaller is removing a file required for CS4 also.
    This is not an isolated incident, as it happened again when installing CS4 on my MacBook Pro. I have also read of similar incidents in other forums. It seems to affect only Photoshop CS4.
    Jerry

    As I no longer require CS3 on my Mac after upgrading to CS4 and waiting for the required plugins to be available I have successfully uninstalled CS3 using the Adobe CS3 Creative Suite uninstaller.
    NOTE: please make a copy of the 'Adobe Unit Types.osax' found Macintosh HD/Library/ScriptingAdditions/Adobe Unit Types.osax
    At home did this without making a backup of the 'Adobe Unit Types.osax', so when I launched Photoshop CS4 it suffered from the "Error: "One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder.."
    At work I did this with making a copy of 'Adobe Unit Types.osax', place it back after the uninstall of CS3... and presto so far so good.
    for the 'Error: "One or more files in the Adobe Application Support folder... are missing' when you start Photoshop CS4 (Mac OS)" read here:

  • Photoshop CS4 for Mac What can cause the error: Plug-in failed to load - NO VERSION

    With Photoshop CS4 for Mac I install the Kodak Plug-in DIGITAL GEM Airbrush Professional v2.1.0. When Photoshop starts I get an error:
    Plug-ins that failed to load:
       DIGITAL GEM Airbrush Professional v2.1.0 NO VERSION -  - from the file “DigitalAIRProv2.plugin”Flash:
       Connections
       Kuler
    This plug-in works fine on my Mac Pro with Photoshop CS4 and OS 10.6 but fails on a new Macbook Air.
    Reinstalling the plug-in did not make any difference. What can cause this error?

    Thanks Chris, That was my first thought too but this same plug-in works on another installation of CS4. This is a Mac installation and the plug-in is Universal so it should work. Is there any other possible cause for this error? Would Photoshop refuse to load a plug-in in a low memory situation?
    Also, The Flash extensions:Connections and Kuler are working OK, I just copied a little more out of the System Info report than I needed to.

  • Saved layered .psd files display text in preview column

    Hi,
    I have layered files that I have saved. When I view my files in column format, in the preview area, text appears, not the image. I can't read the text as it is so tiny. Even when I magnified it I couldn't red it. It just seems to happen to files saved as .psd, not to jpegs.
    Has this happened to other people? If you have a solution, other than flattening the file, as I wish to save the layers, please help me. Thank you in advance.

    >When I view my files in column format, in the preview area, text appears, not the image. I can't read the text as it is so tiny.
    Meaning you are previewing in the Finder?
    That is possibly because you have an Alpha channel in the file.
    If you learn to use Bridge CS4, instead of using the Finder, you won't have this problem.

  • Photoshop CS4, Saved a Tiff file now won't open correctly

    I saved a file as a .tif and it saved as normal then I shut down Photoshop and then the PC. The next day when I try to open the file it doesn't open correctly it opens but the right hand side of the photo is on the left and the left hand side of the image is now on the right, its like its been cut in half and put pack the wrong way.
    It also didn't open with the layers only as a locked background. When I view the file in the icon it looks fine until I open it.
    Help!

    Laura, I'd guess this is not promising for you.  TIFF files tend to be large, so I am wondering if you might have closed Photosho and the PC before it had finished saving?  Do you remember the pixel size of the original image, and what is the file size in Mb?  I am not sure how Photoshop treats TIFF images, depite them owning the file format after buying it from Aldus a few years ago, but it sounds like it was saved as a series of tiles, and the information about the order of those tiles is corrupted.  You might be able to Google TIF file recovery program, but it is unlikely you'll get the full file back with all the information saved with it.
    If you don't get a better answer, keep a weather out for when Chris Cox is posting, and bump this thread.
    Good luck

  • Photoshop CS4 corrupted file while save to OS X 10.5 Server

    Hello
    We have or Leopard OS X Server running for months. Running CS3 Clients on 10.4.11 without any problems.
    A couple of weeks ago we swapped to 10.5 Clients and all Photoshop where corrupted when using "save", the "save as" works fine. After some discussions with the Adobe Support we decided to upgrade all our clients to CS4 (very expensive, while we own CS3.3 only for 5 months now)
    The Same problem occured with CS4 Photoshop. After again a discussion with Adobe Support whe switched of VersionCue support within the Preferences of Photoshop. This solves the problem for our G5 Based Machine, but all the Intel-Based machines are still corrupting the Photoshop files.
    Has some experienced the same problem? Is their a bugfix our a workaround. The Problem is that using "apple-S" key is an automatic mechanism for our people for your now, you can't switch the mind in days to use "shift-apple-S" Key
    Discussing the Problem with Adobe and Apple is very frustrating, they both say it is not their problem or bug but from the other.
    For me Adobe should fix this bug. They offer CS4 for Leopard so they should be aware of incompatibilities with the Leopard System
    Who is able to help us? Are there some workarounds
    Regards
    Gérard

    It's a shame that a company who sells CS4 license for more then CHF 3500 (US$ 2500) isn't able to support the standard FileServer of Apple 10.5. In different forums I found hunderds of entries of people who has the same problem saving photoshop direct to the server under CS3 and CS4.
    A workaround is a solution for a new system but OS X 10.5 Server is availible for more then 14 months now. Why didn't they debug it and solve it, the should have enough resources to solve this. I read the problem also occured on some Microsoft 2003 Server but not all.
    No Bugfix? Has someone experienced or this is a MS or Apple Server Bug, or morelikely a Adobe CS3/CS4 Bug.
    Regards
    Gérard
    As long as we have no Sync Tools as Connextic "FileAgent" under OS9 I refuse to work localy. We lose to many time to sort out the whole Hierachie of all the Folder that need to be modified!

  • Photoshop CS - Saving file as jpg

    Hi
    I am using CS v8.0 and using a javascript action script. I seem to be having all kinds of problems saving the document as a .jpg though. I simply want to open all the files in a folder, resize the image and save the file with a different name (in the same folder). Here is my code so far:
    // Save current dialog preferences
    var startDisplayDialogs = app.displayDialogs;
    var startRulerUnits = app.preferences.rulerUnits; // Save the current preferences
    app.preferences.rulerUnits = Units.PIXELS; // Set Photoshop to use pixels
    // Don't display dialogs
    app.displayDialogs = DialogModes.NO;
    var FILE_TYPE = ".jpg"; // The type of files that this script works on -- you can change
    var SEARCH_MASK = "*" + FILE_TYPE; // Image file filter to find only those files
    try {
    // Ask user for input folder
    var inputFolder = Folder.selectDialog("Select a folder to process");
    if (inputFolder == null)
    throw X_NOINPUT;
    // get all files in the input folder
    var fileList = inputFolder.getFiles(SEARCH_MASK);
    // Open each file in turn
    for (var i = 0; i < fileList.length; i++) {
    // Set document to open file
    var docRef = open(fileList[i]);
    var fname = docRef.name;
    var currentDocument = app.activeDocument;
    // IF LandScape Picture
    if (currentDocument.height.value < currentDocument.width.value) {
    // Resize image by shrinking width
    currentDocument.resizeImage(110,undefined);
    // IF Height < 110 --- Enlarge top right of canvas
    if (currentDocument.height.value < 110) {
    currentDocument.resizeCanvas(110,110,AnchorPosition.BOTTOMLEFT);
    docRef.backgroundLayer.applySharpen();
    var saveFile = new File(fname.slice(0,-4) + "-small.jpg");
    var saveOptions = new JPEGSaveOptions();
    saveOptions.quality = 3;
    currentDocument.saveAs(saveFile,saveOptions,true,Extension.LOWERCASE);
    currentDocument.close(saveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    } else {
    currentDocument.close(saveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    } else {
    // Resize image by shrinking height
    currentDocument.resizeImage(undefined,110);
    // IF Width < 110 --- Enlarge right of canvas
    if (currentDocument.width.value < 110) {
    currentDocument.resizeCanvas(110,110,AnchorPosition.BOTTOMLEFT);
    docRef.backgroundLayer.applySharpen();
    var saveFile = new File(fname.slice(0,-4) + "-small.jpg");
    var saveOptions = new JPEGSaveOptions();

    currentDocument.close(saveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    } else {
    currentDocument.close(saveOptions.DONOTSAVECHANGES);
    catch (exception) {
    // Show degbug message and then quit
    alert(exception);
    finally {
    // Reset app preferences
    app.displayDialogs = startDisplayDialogs;
    The resize of the image seems to work fine but i just can't get the saving working. Also, even though i have specified DONOTSAVECHANGES i still get the "Do you want to save changes" prompt when closing the file.
    Any help is appreciated..
    Thanks,
    Dan

    With CS2, you have to make sure the image is flattened, there are not paths, no extra channels, in RGB colorspace, and 8bit.  The current versions of PS does this for you, but not CS2.
    BTW, you said you just installed CS2, which is a very old program.  I hope you have a license for it.  See this thread:

    This is a solvable problem, and indeed a number of networks work just fine with remote access and saving. But it requires your experienced IT to deal with it -- to understand the particular issues with your network and how to solve them on your end. Changing an OS and its network settings, computers, software, routers and switches and their settings, cabling, other network hardware or software or their settings can affect how reliably files can be accessed and saved to a server.
    As Adobe has said for years, there are just far too many network variables for Adobe to guarantee that saving to a network will always work. So they recommend: drag the file to the local volume. Work locally. Save locally. Drag the file back to the server.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 .psp files conversion?

    OK, here's my problem...A couple of weeks ago I went and deleted a few .PSD files I really needed, big mistake. I've been using different recovery programs and now I've been able to recover all my files (or so I thought) but it turns out what I've actually got are .PSP (Photoshop Preferences) versions of the files. I was able to see the thumbnails of the images which lead me to believe I could open them, but I can't. I'm not sure what these files actually are but they seem to be more than just a thumbnail. For example, the .PNG version of this image is 1.7MB (1,667072 bytes) at 4562 x 6589, the .PSP is 7.2MB (7,213,056 bytes).  It's clear there is more to the .PSP file than just an image, just under 6MB more, the image has/had a big number of layers, probably 20-25 layers.
    There are about 7 other files in the same position as this which are very important to me, it's important I can recover these files. Is there anyway I can somehow open these files to save as .PSD's, or can I convert them some how to the proper format? I figured this would be the best place to ask.
    Thank you in advance.

    There's some stuff here http://www.top4download.com/free-psd-corrupted/ that claims to be able to do it, but it's Windows.
    If you can view them with Quicklook in OS X and expand them to full screen (or the original size) you might try a trial download of SnapzProX from ambrosia software and take a screen snap of the previewed file and keep it.
    Here's where I beat the dead horse. Apple has had Time Machine since Leopard was introduced, and it has saved my butt more than once since I started using it.
    If you make a living with photography or graphic design, and you'd like to continue making a living at it when things like system crashes, other people accessing your computer and files, and hardware failures are not within your sole control, Time Machine is a good way to make sure you don't lose hundreds or thousands of dollars and valuable clients when you can't find their work, which was inadvertently deleted.

  • CS4 psd file display problem

    For some reason within the last few months a problem with the colors that Photoshop is displaying in the application. The colors are not actually wrong if you check the color picker, it's just how it actually looks when you're working on it. In addition, when you are moving the tab in Photoshop if it's not maximized, the color is correct.
    How it currently looks:
    How it should and does look when actually moving the file within Photoshop
    Has anyone seen this?

    Actually that was only half of it...next is to see if an updated video card driver can fix the problem permanently. Check with the GPU manufacturer's site (ATI/NVidia).
    What happened was probably that Windows update delivered a buggy (and outdated) driver. Next time check "hide this update" and it won't show up again.
