Photoshop CS4 will not Start

Hi, i'm usually quite responsible when it comes to making sure my system can coap with what i am asking of it, but i've ran into a problem that my computer just can't seem to get around, and means that photoshop cs4 will not start up.
I've been making .PAT files from a few pattern sourcebooks i've recently brought. The first two went fine, but a japanese sourcebook contained 250 reasonably hi-res pattern images which i put through an automated action which set them all as patterns for me for the Pattern Overlay option in beldning options. When i did this i noticed my computer started to slow down near the end of the process, so i saved out the .PAT file from them, and quit photoshop to free up over 2.10GB worth of data. I have 4GB on a 32bit XP, but only 2 and a half-ish is seen by windows due to the hardware installed aswell. Of course i plan to chnage this to 64bit soon, but anyway, when photoshop now is told to start up, it reads everything normally, then gets to "Reading Preferences", and crashes with an error report, which watching my task manager, i belive to be linked to memory shortage from having to load the patterns up.
I reset my preferences to see if it would set them all back to default and not read the added pattern files, but that made no difference. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!!

I'd look into doing a couple of tests:
1.) Move those PAT files elsewhere
2.) Eliminate all programs and Processes, that are unnecessary. Task Manager>Processes will give you a list of all that load, and you can probably stop half of them with no ill effects. I'd use MSCONFIG, so you can go back and easily activate them later.
3.) Reboot and see what happens.
Note: John's suggestion on the Presets folder might address #1, but I'd also physically Move them. It sounds like you're running totally out of resources to run PS, so Textures, and such, might be an issue too.
A question: how are your Scratch Disks setup and please tell us about your I/O sub-system, i.e. the internal HDD's, their size, free space, speed, controller type and how these internal HDD's are allocated. Especially tell us if you have any physical HDD's partitioned.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Photoshop CS4 will not launch after installing Yosemite.

Photoshop CS4 will not launch after installing Yosemite. All the other CS4 apps open. I upgraded Java. Genius Bar could not get it to launch.

Here's the fix I found, by way of an explanation...
Snow Leopard prompted me on my first startup with the following error:
"There is a conflict with the _______ font file. This font file contains a font name that conflicts with a system font required by Mac OS X to display onscreen text. You should move this font file to the Trash."
The fonts it said were conflicting: Helvetica, HelveticaNeue.dfont, Lucida Grande, and Monaco. I figured Snow Leopard probably wanted to replace these fonts with newer versions, and so I clicked "Move to Trash" on all four.
Apparently 10.6 trashed these fonts but didn't replace them. This was causing Photoshop to crash on load.
So I restored my ~/Library/Fonts folder from a backup made just before upgrading and this time after a reboot I said "Allow Conflict" on all four dialog boxes and launched Photoshop... everything is back to normal!
Not sure what kind of "conflict" it's referring to, but apparently moving these font files to the trash as OS X prompted me to do broke a number of apps. Should I report this as a bug?
    Thanks for the ideas!

  • Photoshop CS4 will not refresh or update view

    Hello,
My Photoshop CS4 will not update / refresh the viewport after any change to the layers or settings. The view will only refresh if the view is changed, such as the hand or zoom tool. This makes Photoshop nearly usesless. Did some looking around the net and have seen a few responses to situations similar to this but none of them are regarding a Mac. This is my work computer so you can understand my frustration.

  • CS4 will not start.

My CS4 will not start. I removed in through the control panel and reloaded.  It still will not start.  What should I do?

Your reference to the Control Panel sounds like you are using Windows?  What I suggest is that you unistall again, and then use the Cleaning tool from this link
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html
Hopefully it will install and work OK after that.  If not, come back, but tel us exactly what operating system you are using.

Please help. Can anyone explain why my photoshop program will not open..  I use Photoshop Bridge then double click on an image and Photoshop opens.
After I downloaded Lightroom 3 which I purchased through an on-line re-seller, I selected some images and imported them into Lightroom.
I do not understand why Photoshop CS4 does not open.
    can anyone advise me.

    What kind of files anyway?
What is the format’s »File Type Association« (check under Adobe Bridge CS4 > Prefernces)?

If I start Outlook (Office 2007) as the first application after loading OS (Win 7 Ult, 64 bit), Photoshop CS5 will not open (message: "needs to close down). I seem to remember having this kind of problem some years ago - but do not remember whats caused this problem. Is there anybody out there having the same kind of trouble? • DW CS4 Will Not Start

I'm using DW CS4 and have been for many months without any problems - Version 10.0/Build 4117. All of a sudden it will not start, When I click on its icon I see the big green DW block and then a Microsoft notice saying Dreamweaver CS4 has stopped working - a problem..... and the only choice I have is to close the program. I've restarted my computer and tried again, with no success. The program sits in my Program Files/Adobe folder on my C: drive.
I badly need the program for the work I'm doing. I've added no new software to my computer lately - at least none that I know of.
    Any suggestions?
    Joe

Hi Thanks for this. I tried what you said the problem I have Win Vista and have installed dreamweaver cs4 Trial. I have Dreamweaver MX as well and have given up trying to use this on my vista machine. I can run CS4 on XP without any issues. Clearly this is a Vista use, but I can be alone with this problem can I?
When I try to run it It will not get past the splash screen, then reports the following.
I have tried turning off UAC and runing as Admin.  Here is the error trail

  • Photoshop CS4 will not install on my new iMac 3.4 i7 OS 10.8.2  WHY!!

Photoshop CS4 will n ot install on my new iMac 3.4 i7 OS 10.8.2  WHY!!!

Do you receive any specific error messages when you try to install?  You can find information on how to locate and interpret your installation log files at Troubleshoot installation with install logs | CS3, CS4 - http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/troubleshoot-installation-install-logs-cs3.html.

  • Photoshop CS4 will not open

When opening cs4 I get the error message that "Photoshop has closed unexpectedly, click ignore or reopen".  Do I need to reinstall or is there another way to troubleshoot this problem?

Have you installed anything or made any system changes since it worked?
You might find that clearing your current Photoshop preferences back to defaults will help...  Press and hold Command - Shift - Option immediately upon cold-starting Photoshop, and if you're quick enough to get the keys down Photoshop should prompt you to confirm deletion of your current preferences - assuming it's getting that far in its startup process.
Normally updates automatically pop up notifications when they're available, and the most recent Photoshop update for CS4 is 11.0.2, which came out 2 years ago - do you remember installing it?  Updates also can be accessed from within Photoshop's menus (e.g., Help - Updates), but in your case since it's not starting that's not helpful.

  • Photoshop CS4 will not launch after upgrade to 10.6

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and found that Adobe Photoshop CS4 crashes every time during launch, moments after the splash screen disappears. I ran the Adobe Updater to see if there was a patch for this, but no go. I've already upgraded to 10.6.1 to no avail.
Photoshop is my livelihood and I'd sure appreciate some help getting this fixed before it starts to cost me! Any ideas?
    Thanks a lot,

Here's the fix I found, by way of an explanation...
Snow Leopard prompted me on my first startup with the following error:

  • Photoshop CS4 will not open newer RAW format

I have CS4 with latest updates, Camera Raw 5.7  and my CR2 images will not open.  I have a Canon EOS Rebel T3i.
I have searched for over 2 hours looking for a solution and according to what I have read I should have what I need to open these files.
When I go into Adobe Exchange to find a possible program, it takes me to a page that wants me to download the Adobe Exchange Panel. However
this is only available to CC or CS6, neither of them I have. I can't get past this page.  So I guess Exchange no long exists for those of us with older programs.
I really hardly ever use this program, but since I need it to open my RAW photos.
I can't afford to upgrade this program at this time and I find it odd they cut off the Exchange area for everything else.
If someone could help me figure out how to get my photos to open in this program without having to buy yet another program that would be wonderful.
I do not use this enough to justify the cost of the upgrade.   What is missing that I need?  The compaitable chart says I have the correct version for my camera.  I am at a loss.
I am sure somewhere someone has asked this before, but for the life of me I can't find one that is based on my criteria, that will help me with my problem.
Thank you for any assistance you can offer.
    My System specs:
    Intel Core2 Quad Q9400  2.66GHZ
    4GB Memory
GeForce GTX 460 Video 1GB Dedicaed Memory
    64Bit Windows 7

The Canon T3i was first supported in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 6.4
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
ACR 6.4 is only compatible with CS5 and later. It is not compatible with CS4 so CS4 cannot open Raw T3i files..
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
To open Raw files in Photoshop, your options are to update to CS6 or the Cloud.
The other option is to use the free Adobe DNG Converter to convert all Raw files from the T3i to DNGs. That adds an extra step to your workflow every time you shoot photos. Then open and edit the DNGs in CS4.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.displayTab2.html
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bqGovpuihw
If you hardly touch Photoshop, another option may be to buy Photoshop Elements 12. Then you can open and edit Raw files from the T3i but you'll have the more limited Elements toolset. You could then export to TIFF and open the TIFFs in CS4 if necessary.
