Photoshop CS5.1 (12.1) "save as" problem

Problem started yesterday, and has now happened twice.
I've been working along just fine all day (yesterday and today). Then, I open an image, change it from RGB to CMYK or BW, make adjustments, or a clipping path, and then tried to save as (so that I can save as tiff instead of jpeg) and I get the spinning beach ball. The only way out of it is to force quit. I re-start Photoshop and try again, even with a different image and without changing anything, and I have the same problem. I have to completely re-start my computer in order to continue working. Once I do, everything seems to be working fine.
I've not made any changes to my setup today, nor have I updated any software today.
Thanks in advance for your help.

ok, in the middle of deadline i've managed to run disk utility and repair permissions, and the problem persists.
i can't find a pattern of activity to establish a cause action. the files are opened from different folders and would be saved to the same folder. permissions are all correct.
when the problem occurs, I have chosen "save as" either from the file menu or keyboard shortcut. the dialog box doesn't appear... just the spinning beach ball. force quit is the only way out and restarting photoshop consistently produces the problem until i do a complete restart.
it's intermittent, but it's getting worse.
deadline is done, but i'm about to start another. any more suggestions would most be greatly appreciated.

  • HI, I just bought Photoshop CS5 and I have a problem with HDR pro

HI, I just bought Photoshop CS5 and I have a problem with HDR pro . when I am trying to mount 3 images together it act in a strange way ( the images appear and disappear many times) then when the window with the result appear and I say ok it open up in photoshop as a single image ( in the layers there is just 1 photo) and when I am trying to work it up with the Plug in/filter HDR Effex Pro (Nik softwear) a pop up window appear saying that the file is missing and the operation it is not possible. Why and what is happening ? Someone can help me ?

This is normal operation. The output from HDR pro does not produce a layered file. You make all your adjustments in the Nik Plug-in. Once Nik has finished you then make any rinal changes in Photoshop. Trying to use NIK again on the image in Photoshop is not the way to do this.
When HDR pro comes up do you see all the presets and controls? Presets on the left and controls on the right

  • Lightroom 3: Edit in Photoshop CS5 no longer saves a copy as TIFF for editing

    Hi,
I have Lightroom 3 (LR3) and Photoshop CS5 (non Extended) and Snow  Leopard on OSX.  Both LR3 and CS5 are filly updated.  CS5 updated with  Camera Raw 6.1.
On one day, when I tell LR3 to "Edit in Photoshop" it would save a copy  of the NEF with current LR3 settings as a TIFF and I can edit it in  Photoshop as a TIFF.  I would see a progress indicator in LR3 that show  it saving a copy as a TIFF.
The next day, this stopped working.  It goes directly to Photoshop and  opens the NEF itself.   It's is completely ignoring the LR3 settings in  External Handling tab.
Strangely, when I "save" this NEF in Photoshop, a TIFF is created back in LR3.  That threw me off completely from LR2.7
Has anybody encountered this?  Does LR3 skip telling you if you want to save as TIFF now if you have the latest LR and CS?
    Thank you.

What you describe as abnormal is how things are supposed to work:
If the RAW engines match (where LR3 and ACR 6.1 do), then LR just tells PS what the "conversion recipe" is and PS tells ACR to silently open it with that "recipe" so it doesn't have to be rendered to TIF or PSD on the way into PS.
If the RAW engine of PS (ACR's version) is too odl to understand all the LR adjustments then LR knows this and will render to an intermediate file on the way into PS.  This also happens if you use some other third-party photo-editor that can't use ACR to open the file.
On Windows, at least, there is a way to make LR render to TIF/PSD on the way into Photoshop, I fyou create a duplicate copy of the EXE and rename it to PhotoshopX.exe or some other name that LR doesn't recognize as Photoshop, then LR thinks it is a third-party editor and renders an intermediate file.
What might have happened is that you updated to ACR 6.1 or maybe PS 12.0.1 which caused LR to re-evaluate the Photoshop compatibility and it determined it was fully compatible and didn't render to an intermediate file on the way in.
Since Photoshop is a bitmap editor, it has to save as something other than the RAW file on the way out, and LR will see that Save occur and import it automatically.
    Does that all make sense?

  • Photoshop CS5 Mac Dual Monitor color problems

    Hi all,
I know this problem has been raised before, but I can't seem to find a definitive answer - there is a lot of conjecture and opposing opinions so I'm trying to get to the bottom of this once and for all.
Gear: MacBook Pro, Photoshop CS5, Wacom Cintiq 12WX as second display, Mac OS X 10.7.4
Problem: Photoshop seems to only use the Monitor Profile of the main display (i.e. the one with the menu bar in System Preferences>Displays>Arrangement) - some people say yes, this is the case, some people say no, Photoshop uses independent profiles for each display.
Manifestation: If I set my MacBook screen to the main display, color looks good in Photoshop on the MacBook and terrible on the Wacom and vice-versa. However, in Lightroom and other applications changing the main display makes no difference to the output on each display.
Preferred solution: I would like to have my MacBook as my main display with menu bars and dock etc, but then I want the Cintiq to be the display I use in Photoshop, for obvious reasons. In my workflow, I would like to have my image open in 2 windows, one on the Cintiq for retouching and one on the MacBook to check progress and color etc
Curveball: I have a trial of CS6 and the problem seems to be fixed (maybe, my eyes and sense of reason are fried)
Many thanks for any help anyone can shed
    Simon

Make sure you have all the updates installed for Photoshop.
Apple introduced new bugs in their display and window update pipelines in 10.7, which we didn't get a chance to completely work around until Photoshop CS6.
We tried to work around them as best we could in the dot releases for CS5.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 preference file deleted problem

    Hello
I hope soemone can help out here, i'm quite stuck!
I'm running OS 10.8.5 using PS CS5.1. My mac was left on overnight (not sure how relevant that is) and when opening up PS this morning it crashed with the message 'end of file encountered' 'preferences file is invalid/has been deleted'
I've read up on a few older posts about the same thing. I uninstalled/reinstalled from disk but the same thing happens.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Matt

Please hold down Shift+Option+Command keys as Photoshop is launched.
Incase this does not work, please delete the corrupt preference file:
    Go to your home folder.
Go to your User Library folder.( OR Hit Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder > Go > Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library)
    Go to the Preferences folder.
Delete the “Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings” (or similar name) folder.(Folder name may differ depending on what version you have)

  • Photoshop CS5 freezes during save (Mac Os 10.9)

Dear users of Photoshop, I have a serious problem.
Every time I try to save a blank Photoshop file also does not respond and I have to force quit.
Work on a MacBookPro with 8 MB of Ram.
    The system is compatible.
    Until recently it worked.
    I tried to repair permissions.
I tried deleting everything even with the use of Adobe Cleaner and reinstall.
I tried to launch the appicazione Adobe to fix the licenses.
    Please help me.
From Activity Monitor I see that the application is not responding.
    I'm desperate ... What can I do?
    Thank you and by.
    Sara

Update: The uninstaller clearly does not uninstall everything. Something is left on or in the flies is corrupt. I have trashed everthing I could find after an unistall and even things that Apple support helped me find. Still crashes after uninstall and fresh reinstall.
Good News: I found a work around for now. I logged into another user account on the same computer. Contribute CS5 opened, I enter the Key and information, and I have access again. At least I have one way in. The trouble is most of the content I want to add is in the other main user account, so I have to put all files/photos into a shared folder so I can get access.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks

  • Photoshop CS5 slow to save .psd

    Hello!
Im running a 6.2. Macbook Pro with 2.4GHz i5 and 8gb of RAM.
The problem is, that whenever I save a .psd file it takes awfully long time for the "Writing photoshop format"-bar to progress. For example an image from my dslr with only few layers (photoshop shows the document size to be under 700mb) it can take almost a minute.
This is pretty frustrating when saving a file between steps of editing -  it really disturbs my workflow. The funny thing is, that it doesnt seem to have any meaning whether I have the file on a external drive or the laptops drive. So I dont think it's the drive's fault, I could always be mistaken.
I dont experience these problems when using older Imac's at our school running CS5 - with them the save-command is always instant. I also never remember waiting so long for saving to happen with previous Photoshop versions.
What gives? How should I configure this to be bearable or is this how it actually works?
    Already tried:
    - Re-Installing CS5 (also using the CS5 CleanUp utility)
    - Defragmenting my laptops harddrive (restoring the os from time-machine)
    - Setting the option for "Maximize .psd and .psb file compatibility" to "never"
    - Trying out different memory usage settings (just randomly testing different values - doesnt seem to make a difference)
    - Trying out different history & Cache settings
    - Disabling GPU usage
    - Trying different Scratch disks (external with FW800 and also making a partition on my Macbook HD (I know it isnt supposed to help if its on the same physical drive))
    - All updates are installed (CS5 & OSX)
Is something wrong or is a i5 macbook pro with 8gb of memory slower to do this than a core2duo Imac from 2008 with 4gb of memory. Or Am I just looking at the wrong things.

There is probably nothing wrong with your install or your computer.
large layered photoshop files (afaik) (PSD and PSB) use heavy lossless compression that is not very fast and single-threaded... almost all of my files save at a relatively slow rate of 8MB/s (on a fully stuffed mac pro) due to the "compression). try flattening your files... they should write then at almost full HD speed. alternatively, as long as your files are below 2/4GB, save them as layered TIFF files with little/no compression... much faster than PSD. (but also check your system/PS memory usage... if you encounter heavy system swap and PS swap at the same time, your computer will also become very slow).

  • Photoshop CS5 with Wacom Intuos 3 - Problem

I recently upgraded my PC and therefore reinstalled Adobe Design Standard CS5 and my Wacom Intuos 3. But at my first attempt to draw something I realized that the pen pressure isn't always recognized correctly. Therefore I get some lines with and without pressure:
Any idea how I can fix this? The tablet is working correctly with Open Canvas , therefore this should be a Photoshop problem.
    Thank you in advance.

Make sure you have the Photoshop updates installed.
Then contact Wacom.  Photoshop just uses the pressure information it receives from the wacom driver, and they have bugs like this sometimes.

    Please help,
    thanks

    Hi,
    Try this,
If your problem is only when saving because I have seen people that cannot open files either.
If you can open a File,
    Open it.
Then close it, or keep it open but now you will be able to create new documents and save them.
    Good Luck

  • Vanishing Point Filter Always Crashes Photoshop CS5 - Anyone else have this problem?

19 out of 20 times I use the vanishing point filter in PS CS5, it ends up crashing the program. This usually happens when I try to adjust the angle of a new plane. Does anyone else have this problem? I need to use this feature for my job. Are there any alternative filters or programs I could use instead, or could I somehow fix the plugin?

Someone reported this way back around when PS CS5 was first released I think.  I don't find the thread but as I recall the advice at the time was to update the display driver on the system...  Visit the web site of the maker of your video card (e.g. nvidia.com or ATI.com) and download/install the latest driver release that matches your hardware and operating system.

  • Photoshop CS5.1 Brushes Window UI Problem

Im using Vista 64 bit. Photoshop did not open for me, then Windows pops up a window saying it has adjusted my display settings and photoshop should work. So I open photoshop and things look alright but the brushes window UI display is frozen and goes transparent. One of my essential tools. Can you tell me what happend or how to fix this?

  • Photoshop CS5 "Could not complete your request because of a program error." on Save As

    Hello all,
We just got a new iMac with 10.9 on it.  Photoshop CS5 is having a major problem.  About 80% of the time we get an error on Save As, "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
It appears like it might be related to saving JPEGs, as we get the message when saving as JPEG and Photoshop PDF.  Saving as Photoshop and PNG work fine.
    Running 10.9.3
    Photoshop CS5
Creative Cloud is also installed on this machine.

Alright, something on your system is causing odd problems.
Third party plugins would be the first suspect.  If you have third party plugins, disable them.
Corrupt font files or corrupt OS font cache would be the second.
See this for tips to troubleshoot font issues:  http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/troubleshoot-fonts-photoshop-cs5.html
After those 2 causes, it would have to be something invoked, like a scanner or printer driver.
Then we get to bad installs, bad RAM, bad CPU, etc.

  • OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Photoshop CS5 Windows file server save issue

After Lion to Mountain Lion upgrade.
Cannot save or save as to Windows server. Due to "program error." Adobe Photoshop CS5. Can save as fine to local drive. Can also drag and drop in the Finder to this server.
This is Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 (current).
Once the error "could not save filename due to a program error" occurs, the file disappears from the Windows server.
I think it has something to due with the SMB connection.
All other CS5 apps (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) "save" and "save as" fine. It is also fine performing the same procedure using Preview.

We're in 2015 and this is still an issue with the latest updates from Apple. Any one confirm that the save to network storage problem in Photoshop is gone with the newest version of Photoshop Creative Cloud?
Here's what's happening in our shop as of May, 2015 with both AFP and SMB server connections:
We are using Photoshop CS 5.1, Version 12.1 x64. I believe this is the most up to date version of our CS5.1 software.
We are on OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.3.
When connected to the server via afp (in server log it says "AFP client")
Photoshop gives this error on a save after some changes are made to the file: "Could not save "file name" because write access was not granted." Then, as soon as you hit ok, the file is deleted from the server and is gone within a minute or so. If no change was made to the file, save works fine.
If you use "save as" and keep the same file name, it will usually fail with the same error as above. If you use save as and type in a new file name, all works fine.
If logged in via SMB (in the server log is says "CIFS client")
When you try to save, the error changes to "could not save "file name" because the file was not found." And then as soon as you hit OK on the error, the file is deleted from the server. Using Save As and inputing a different file name presented a new problem, it always says "could not save as "file name" because the file was not found." (in this case SMB seems to be worse than an AFP connection).
This is very frustrating and has been going on in the forums for over 3 years. Shared network environments are commonplace today. It seems to be centered around photoshop and OSX. All other software we use has been working fine with the server / network attached storage.
    Thanks for any guidance. Sean

  • Photoshop cs5 Save as slow down

Hi I have been experiencing a ptoblem in Photoshop Cs5 relating to Save As.
My workflow is as follows. I import and work on my pictures using Lightroom 3.2, then if I want further editing - I use Photshop.
I have a dual processor Xeon workstation that can cope with bot apps and more no problems and they have both been working together for the last couple of months. I am running 64 bit windows 7 and photoshop with 8gb RAM
However recently when I have editing a picture and go to Save as, the dialog box hangs for ages. The Hard disk goes bananas for a prolonged period of time and then finally the save as dialog opens and I can save, It appears to only do this the first few times I open different files then its ok. There doesnt seem to be a pattern to it. But the wait before the dialogue box opens depends on the file size. The bigger the file size the longer the wait.
Has anyone else experienced this problem and perhaps could offer some advice or guidance.
    many thanks
    Neil

When saving a file using 'Save As' I can no longer "window" the screen image, it always opens "full-screen" and can't be resized.
Does that mean that it did work, but now does not?
If it used to work, then something has changed. The trick is to find out what it was.
First thing that I check, whenever I have a GUI display issue, is whether there is an update for my video adapter's driver. PS interfaces more closely with the video driver, than some other programs. Simple things, such as OS updates, can render a video driver obsolete, and can cause all sorts of issues. What make/model card do you have? What is the number/date of your installed video driver?
Hope that it is as simple as going to the ATI/AMD, or nVidia Web site, and downloading, then installing a new driver.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Photoshop CS5.1 will not even open. Says it has encountered a problem and has to close.

I have just today downloaded a free trial of Adobe CS5.1, but when I try to open it, it brings up the loading screen, and then when it says "Starting-up plug-ins, Scripting Support" an error message comes up saying "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close.
This also happens when I try to use Photoshop Elements 8. It will not let me on to the Organiser.
As well as this, I had a problem with bridge. Whenever I tried to download images onto my computer, it said "Adobe photo downloaded has encountered a fatal error. Error code: c0000005 (I cannot remember what the address was though). I uninstalled bridge and then tried to download CS5.1 so I could get bridge again, but it has only made things worse!
    What should I do?
    Thanks
    Oscar

Ok I did that and it said
"Faulting application photoshop.exe, version 12.1.0.0, faulting module scriptingsupport.8li, version 10.0.0.0, fault address 0x000d1a2e."
This would make sense as when I try to start photosohop CS5.1 and the strtup screen appears, when it says "Starting-up plugins, Scripting Support" that it was the message "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 has encountered a problem and has to close" comes up.

  • HELP! Photoshop CS5 to CS5 Extended Install PROBLEM!

I had photoshop CS2 and Illustrator CS2 since they came out. I just recently (November of 2011)upgraded to Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5, those installs went OK, I did forget my login info but a call to Adobe got that all figured out.
Now I only "Play" in photoshop and illustrator at home for my own entertainment, and really barely used the CS2, so I am still just a newbie playing around in photoshop and illustrator.
Anyways, after watching a bunch of Photoshop CS5 Videos, I realized that Photoshop had an "Extended" version with 3D I was unaware of. So I wanted the Extended version, I called Adobe and he said I was 37 days out on my Photoshop CS5, so all I could do now was Buy the Extended version or buy the Upgrade Extended version, since my CS2 was already used for the initial photoshop CS5 upgrade. But since I upgraded my Illustrator CS2 to CS5 a week later he said I could Return that if I wanted.
He brought that up in the convo, not I.
So I Bit the Bullet, AGAIN, and bought the Photoshop CS5 Extended Upgrade to Upgrade the Photoshop CS5 I had just upgraded too.
Let me say this, ALL are Legal Copies ALL Legit. (Before someone says anything about that.) CS5 Photoshop and CS5 Illustrator were bought from Amazon, by Amazon Not one of there outside sellers, and so was the Photoshop CS5 Extended Upgrade.
My Problem is, I cannot Install the Photoshop CS5 Extended? As I am installing it asks for the code, I type it in, then if has two photoshop things listed, one 64 bit and one 32 I believe. But also above them says "Already Installed" with a >! in a white dot. Hovering my mouse over it it says "If you select any of the below to install again it will be installed it the current file location."
I go through the Install and I still have the Regular Photoshop CS5 NOT the Extended Version???
Box and top of the DVD says Photoshop CS5 Extended on them. But the offered install files that are offered on it that say "Already Installed" above them in the installer , Neither one says anything about Extended just ADOBE PHOTOSHOP CS5.1 ??
I went to Adobe and talked to a live chat guy but after he took my email and ALL of my serial #'s for ALL of my Photoshop products, had me try installing it again, and then just said I had to Call Adobe Tech. (That was Useless, they should just CLOSE the live chat thing if they can't do anything.)
Anyways, with NO Photoshop CS5 Extended getting installed on my PC Win7 64 bit I3 cpu with 8 gigs of ram, my Adobe Account on my "View Product Registration" Page it now Lists the serial # and info as of 1-1-2012 as having Registered my Photoshop Extended Version 12.0 with all my other registered Adobe software.
So HOW can I get the Extended to actually Install? I Opened the files on the DVD and really don't see anything that even says Extended on any?
I had Amazon OVERNIGHT this Photoshop CS5 Extended Upgrade to me so I could as Bert Monroy says, "Play, just Play it's the best way to Learn Photoshop." over the new years weekend, now I sit here frustrated instead.
Maybe I will email him, maybe he knows what to do, he has always replied to my emails and has Signed my Photoshop books authored by him. (Nice guy very helpful.)
    Any info/help much Appreciated.
    Thanks

Please explain this? I never done that before.
In Help I clicked Deactivate and then see a pop up box with 2 choices, Suspend Activation or Deactivate Permanently.
I hit the Cancel button at the bottom for now.
If this don't work I will Call Adobe on Monday and hopefully get it all worked out, or I will be packing up Both CS5 Upgrades I just bought and send them both back to Amazon for a full Refund.
This should NOT be such a P.I.T.A. just because a few kids hack and use photoshop without actually paying for it.
I am 50 years old BTW, and Paid for my Legit copys, but I gotta jump through Hoops as punishment for a few who don't pay.
Myleniums answer sure sounds like a big pain in the a** to go through and I'd just Return the CS5 stuff, Including the CS5 Illustrator I just upgraded as well. As a Amazon Prime Member they will take it all back and refund me my cash.
As a rare user, just for myself at home, I only Upgraded because I knew Adobe only allowed you to get 3 versions behind before you had to rebuy the full install software all over again so I waited until I thought it was getting close to CS6 coming out and I would Not be able to upgrade at the upgrade pricing. And the CS6 Licensing I read about coming up does NOT appeal to me.
So CS2 or CS5 will be it for me and Adobe. As a Hobbiest I cant afford to do upgrades for each new version. /i heard starting with CS6 you will be Required to upgrade when the very next one comes out, not able to skip a version. Or even some silly monthly fee type thing, Never will I pay a Monthly fee for software use.
