Photoshop CS5.1 suddenly can't save to main hard drive

This is very strange.  In Photoshop I suddenly can't save files to the main hard drive on my mac mini.  I get the error "Could not save as [filename] because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary access privileges. Use the ‘Get Info’ command in the Finder to unlock the file or change permissions on the file or enclosing folders."  I can however save files to the secondary hard drive.  Other applications can save to the main hard drive just fine.
As a test, in Photoshop I tried saving to the root of both drives.  I get the error only when attempting to save to the main hard drive.  I have checked the permissions of both drives and they are identical:  system R/W, wheel R/W, and everyone R/W.
I have tried everything I can find on the message boards, but nothing works (disk repair, repair permissions, etc).  I have also reinstalled Photoshop and get the same error.
any help much appreciated!
thanks,
JC

The problem has resolved itself!
All I did was reboot a few times in my attempts to get Command-R to work (I have a PC keyboard and the "option" and "command" keys are reversed until OS X boots).
Oh, one other thing I did... I logged in as a different user and ran Photoshop and was able to save a file to the main hard drive.  Very strange because this guest user has less privilege than my normal login.

If it's the same computer, same CPU and same HD, no de-activation or re-activation should be necessary.
Install from scratch and apply all updates manually.
Please do a forum search.  I and others have repeatedly answered the question about failed updates of CS5 a whole bunch of times recently.
Bottom line:  the Adobe auto updater is utterly useless in CS5 and prior versions.  You need to download the updates and apply them manually yourself.
I and others have even supplied the links for Mac and Win, which you haven't even bothered to specify.

My iMac suddenly can't read the backup hard drive I've been using for Time Machine.  I tried unplugging the cord that connects the HD to the iMac and plugging it back in, but I still get "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" below which are buttons for Initialize, Ignore and Eject.  I was using a cord that went from larger square plug to larger square plug.  So then I tried one that went from smaller square plug to what I think is USB (thin rectangular plug) of the sort that connects the keyboard and mouse. It's the type that my printers and scanners use to connect to the iMac.  I did NOT just upgrade the OS or anything.  The external HD is an OWC Mercury Elite All Pro. Thanks, Michael!  I do hear it at times spooling up and running. Just after I bumped the thread I looked for troubleshooting for this drive online and found the manual which suggested using Disk Utility which I've seen before accidentally (if I hit Command Shift U instead of Shift U to type "Unit" on a new folder for a student's homework ) but had never really noticed.   Disk Utility does see it and also a sub-something (directory?) which might be the Time Machine archives on the disk, called disk1s2), sort of the way that my iMac's hard drive shows up as 640.14 GB Nitachi HDT7... and has a sub-something titled DB iMac, which is what I named my iMac's hard drive.
Anyway the owner's manual just shows the image under the formatting section, not the troubleshooting section, but as soon as I saw it in the manual I remembered seeing it accidentally a few times, went to it, and am now verifying the disk.  Right now it's telling me that it will take 2 hours to complete the verification, so I guess I have a bigt of a wait.  :-)
Does that fact that Disk Utilities can see it mean it's not failed, or just that it hasn't completely failed?
I can see the virtue in having multiple redundant backups, or at least two backups. What do you suggest?  Two external hard drives?  I had this one linked by ethernet, and but I also have a cord that could link it by USB (like a printer), so if this one is reparable I could get a second one and link it by USB.  If this one is not reparable I could get two and do the same thing.  I do have an Airport so I suppose it's possible to get some sort of Wi-Fi hard drive (my new printer/scanner uses only the network and not a cable, although it has a cable that I used for the initial installation), but I'd suspect a Wi-Fi hard drive might have a higher price.
What hard drives, if any, do you recommend? I seem to recall that when I was looking at external hard drives 4 years ago, Apple's were substantially more expensive, which is why I got the OWC Mercury Elite All Pro.

If you want to use the ATA 300 drive at full speed you'll need to buy an ATA 300 Card, otherwise it
will only run at 150Mbps. It will still work but the throughput will be half since the Original G5 ata

  • Photoshop CS5.1 - Can't save or open file

This is an issue that randomly pops up and has been popping up for a while now (also in CS4 and CS5).
Basically I will be working in Photoshop and all of a sudden I cant save the file anymore. It opens up the dialog (if i do a "save as") but after a second or two it stops, leaving the file unsaved. After this point I can't even open any more files, the "file open" dialog box opens, but no documents.
If I have a document open during this time and try to edit a type layer, it will revert to the previous variant after I commit the changes.
I also can't do a drag&drop command from that point onward.
After I reboot, it starts working again ... until the next time "it" happens.
I have openGL turned off atm, same happens with it being turned on.
Running Win7 64bit, 4GB ram, wacom intuos 3, two monitors
All drivers are updated, but as I've said before, it's an
    Please help!

Everything is updated. No third party plugins are installed, just the adobe fonts are on this computer (did a fresh install cause of this issue).
Its weird because, I can't even use the free transform tool (it shows the bounding box, but I cant drag anything). Same with the text layers, can't make any permanent changes.
When I click on file/save nothing happens, file/save as opens up a dialog box, but then it's the same thing.

  • How can I save space on Hard Drive? Lo-Res Previews like Aperture.

I have searched these forums and the internet but not found a solution as yet.
My problem is I have a MacBook Pro and the hard drive is getting full.
I want hi-res images on an external hard drive but have a lo-res preview on my hard drive so I am never without all my pictures. I think from memory Aperture dose this, but I like iphoto's simplicity. I don't want to have aperture installed as well as iphoto.
    Hope this makes sense.

Let me reinforce Larry's concern about the "referenced" mode. All it takes is to have an interruption between iPhoto and the external HD while you are working in iPhoto and the library will lose the links between the alias files in the library and the source files on the external HD. It will be very difficult to relink all of the alias files when that happens. Maybe one event at a time but that's no assurance.
Also you will not be able to use the library without the external HD mounted if you have any movies in the library. It's best to have a separate library for movie files in that event.
One option would be to run your primary library from the external HD and have a smaller one with the most current or needed photos on the boot drive. You can copy events and albums between the two libraries with the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager while keeping keywords, comments and titles intact.
Another issue with the "referenced" library is the fact that if you delete a photo from the library you will have to locate and delete the source file from the external HD. Additionally you cannot rename or move any source files with the Finder or add new photos to an existing source folder and expect it to be automatically imported into iPhoto. It's best for each new source import to have its own folder.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.≤br>
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Installed Lion, now I can't save to my hard drive anymore!

I installed Lion yesterday, and now I cannot save documents or anything to my hard drive anymore.  To create a new folder on my hd i need to put in permission, to save a word document it says, can't do!  No space
"Word cannot save or create this file.  The disk may be full or write protected. Try one or more of the following, free more memory, make sure that the disk you want to save the file on is not full, write-protected or damaged. "
How do I fix this?  thanks! e_moma

Hello Debora, and welcome to ASC -
I think it would be better to start your own thread, for a couple of reasons. First, although you may be getting the same error message as the original poster, it's not at all clear yet that they are caused by the same problem, and trying to sort out possible different situations can get very confusing. The original poster seems to have a permission problem even for creating a new folder; if you can save from TextEdit but not from Word then you may have a different problem. The original poster always has priority.
Second, this is the Lion forum, and if you are not running Lion you will get more focused help if you post in the forum that corresponds to your system. It's also important in getting help that people here know as much about your system as possible - you should complete your profile so that people know what you are running.

  • Can anyone save my external hard drive?

    Hi all,
This is probably the first time ever that I have to ask a question myself. Usually when I have any problems I can find a solution in other people's solved threads. But not this time and I'm really frustrated. If any of you can help me with this I will be eternally grateful.
I have a 1TB WD external hard drive with 500Gb of millions of files, really important data that is not copied anywhere else right now.
Around the time I upgraded to Maverick's I think (not 100% sure) I started having problems when I wanted to copy files from the HDD. Some files would randomly give the error "The operation can’t be completed because the item X is in use". Some not, but since I have millions of files, I would try to copy folders, and whenever one of these files gave an error, the whole operation would be canceled and all the copied files deleted. Copying one by one is not an option, especially because there are some that don't even work individually, maybe 1/3 of them, I don't know.
I started looking on the internet about the problem and I found many people having the same one. However, they circumstances were usually different, not wanting to copy from an external HDD, but maybe they just wanted to delete some file or talking about some network thing saying some terms that I don't understand like NAS, SMB shares, AFP, so I thought that that wasn't my case. For the ones whose circumstances were similar, I tried every single option that I found. Here is what I tried so far:
-Copying not the files but the "mother/s folder/s (in many different ways and it definitely didn't solve anything).
-Killing some process called "Unmount blabla" I don't remember.
-Disabling the icon preview in finder. I thought it would solve it because everyone said it did, but not for me : (
Note that so far, while I couldn't copy the files, the speed at which it tried or it copied some was a normal one.
Then I went to disk utility and tried to repair the disk, thinking something was wrong with it. The first time I could verify, but not repair. It didn't solve anything obviously. The second time I couldn't even verify it.
Then I decided to upgrade to Yosemite thinking this might solve a possible Maverick's problem.
My God, it didn't. Now, not only it keeps saying that the files are in use. Now every time I plug the HDD, it takes around 15 minutes without recognising it, until finally a message pops up "This disk can't be repaired. You can still copy files from it, but backup as many as you can and then erase the volume". (It seems it automatically tries to repair it now?)
As if that wasn't enough, once the device is recognised. It seems that the speed at which it reads the files inside has been dramatically decreased. If I try now to copy some files. Like an iPhoto Library of 4 Gb, it copies at approximately 0,05 Mb per second, with an estimated time of 24 hours for 4 mere Gb. It would take a whole year to transfer 500Gb. But of course, not even that since after waiting one hour, it gives the same problem "file in use".
It seems to be more the reading than the writing since when I copy big files that are not in populated folders (and that are not the "evil / in use" files) it does it faster.
Erasing is not an option, there are just too many important things. I know, I should have had 2 copies, but this is the situation now...
I tried downloading a recovery software and I tried with some Stellar Phoenix Data Recovery or something like that. The first times I tried recovering files from it, it would do it at the same ultra slow speed. One of the times, randomly it copied all the files at a normal USB 3.0 speed (I had forgotten how fast that was), but all the files were completely unreadable. When I tried to open them it said they were damaged.
However, it's not that the files are damaged because when I try to copy them manually they can be opened normally. But of course, at the slowest speed in the world and only a fraction of them.
If you can help me solve this issue, I really would be in debt forever. I haven't end up in a dead end like now and I really need to recover the data.
Thank you so much in advance.
    Jose

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.

  • Can you take your main Hard Drive from a PC and put it in the Mac Pro?

Can I take my PC's 120GB hard drive that already has Windows XP on it and put it in one of the hard drive slots in the Mac Pro and have a dual boot system that way? Or is there any way I can do that?
    Thanks

    Hi there.
Not only reactivating is to consider, but Windows tends to
act strange if too many hardware parts change (and too many
    drivers are to be installed).
Especially with SATA-Drivers there are almost always difficulties, because Win XP itself doesn't know about SATA (because its too 'old').
Since I have use PCs for almost 18 years I would always recommend a fresh install, when things like Mainboards are changed.

  • Can't save to external hard drive connected to Airport Ex from networked pc

    Hi,
I have always been able to access the files on my external harddrive that's connected to my Airport Extreme from my wirelessly networked laptop pc and make changes, deletions, save files, etc.
Sometime in the past couple of weeks, it changed. I still can get to my files on the ext drive and open them, but I cannot save a file that I edited. For example, if I'm on my pc laptop and I'm in Photoshop, I can still get to the files on the external drive that's connected to my Airport Extreme, but once I make my changes to the graphic and hit save, I cannot save the file to the external drive. As a matter of fact, I've now discovered that I can open files, but not save them, change the file name, etc. on the external drive. I have always been able to. My connections, hardware, etc have not changed.
When I connect to the external drive from my laptop pc, I connect with my mac user name and password. I am an administrator. Thoughts?

Try running Disk Utility and Repairing Disk Permissions...
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Photoshop CS5 Windows file server save issue

After Lion to Mountain Lion upgrade.
Cannot save or save as to Windows server. Due to "program error." Adobe Photoshop CS5. Can save as fine to local drive. Can also drag and drop in the Finder to this server.
This is Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 (current).
Once the error "could not save filename due to a program error" occurs, the file disappears from the Windows server.
I think it has something to due with the SMB connection.
All other CS5 apps (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) "save" and "save as" fine. It is also fine performing the same procedure using Preview.

We're in 2015 and this is still an issue with the latest updates from Apple. Any one confirm that the save to network storage problem in Photoshop is gone with the newest version of Photoshop Creative Cloud?
Here's what's happening in our shop as of May, 2015 with both AFP and SMB server connections:
We are using Photoshop CS 5.1, Version 12.1 x64. I believe this is the most up to date version of our CS5.1 software.
We are on OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.3.
When connected to the server via afp (in server log it says "AFP client")
Photoshop gives this error on a save after some changes are made to the file: "Could not save "file name" because write access was not granted." Then, as soon as you hit ok, the file is deleted from the server and is gone within a minute or so. If no change was made to the file, save works fine.
If you use "save as" and keep the same file name, it will usually fail with the same error as above. If you use save as and type in a new file name, all works fine.
If logged in via SMB (in the server log is says "CIFS client")
When you try to save, the error changes to "could not save "file name" because the file was not found." And then as soon as you hit OK on the error, the file is deleted from the server. Using Save As and inputing a different file name presented a new problem, it always says "could not save as "file name" because the file was not found." (in this case SMB seems to be worse than an AFP connection).
This is very frustrating and has been going on in the forums for over 3 years. Shared network environments are commonplace today. It seems to be centered around photoshop and OSX. All other software we use has been working fine with the server / network attached storage.
    Thanks for any guidance. Sean

  • Am useing a PC. Have Photoshop CS5, suddenly cannot move Raw files from bridge (or anywhere else) into photoshop. Jpeg move into photoshop ok, did get error message 1 what do I do to correct this                om bridge (or anywhere else for that matter)

    Useing a PC
    Have Photoshop CS5
Suddenly cannot move Raw Files from Bridge (or anywhere else) into photoshop.
I Can move Jpegs into ps the only issue is with Raw files
I did get error1 message but as do not know what that means its no help
    any suggestions?

Sorry for the late reply. My email firewall has become a little over zealous & sent a lot of my emails straight to my junk email folder, so I have only just now discovered your reply in my junk mail folder.
The only "don't open files exceeding xxx megabytes" instruction I can find in my Prefs, is in the Bridge Prefs for Thumbnails, & mine is set at 1000mb. The biggest files I handle are bigger than 200mb so I should be able to open a few, not just one.
However, this doesn't explain why I can open a psd format file of 180mb, close it, but then can't open a RAW format file of only 26mb immediately after.
I can open the RAW file only if I restart my computer - very annoying!
However, thanks for the advice about the video card & memory.
So, I'm still stuck as to what the issue is.

  • Why do I have 200 GB of "backup" on my main hard drive?  Any how can I find and erase them?

I have a MBP that was recently subjected to some liquid damage and taken in for repair.  While it was being repaired, I purchased a second MBP.  My newest MBP is now my personal laptop, and I'm converting the old one over to a work laptop.  In that process, I've upgraded to Lion, and now I'm trying to free up as much hard drive space as possible.  I have already deleted all of the music, photos and videos from the hard drive.  However, when I go to see how much free space I have left, it shows that I have over 200 GB of "backups" on my main hard drive.
I have never created any backups on this drive.  I only used an external HD to do Time Machine backups.  How can I locate these backups and delete them in order to free up the hard drive space?

When you open FINDER, is there a folder titled 'backups?  If not, have to tried 'search' or 'spotlight' to locate 'backups?  By any chance is your disc partitioned?
You state that you have deleted all music, photos and videos from this drive.  The graphic that you included in your query shows that these are still on the disc.
The simplest way of achieving your desired result is to open Disk Utility and erase all user data.  However that does not tell us what 'backups' is.  Pure speculation on my part, but if the disc is partitioned, maybe that is how it is represented on the graphic.
Click on the HDD on your desk top using Command 'I' and see if available space correlates with the the above graphic.  If not this suggest a software issue.
If it does, you have to locate 'backups'.  As alluded to previously, try SEARCH and SPOTLIGHT.  200GB is hard to hide.  Another technique is to open finder and press COMMAND 'J'.  Click on 'size' and 'calculate all sizes'.  If one of those files is over 200 GB, you have located your culprit.
Better yet wait for someone who knows exactly what the problem is and will give a simple answer.  I admit I'm grasping at straws here, but maybe I've at least given a bit of a starting point.  Good luck.
    Ciao.
