Photoshop CS5.5 "Not Responding"

I encountered an annoying issue with photoshop cs5.5 a few months ago, but I never got around to solving it because I didn't need to use it, but now I'm back at school and I need to work on some things...
When I open photoshop, there's no problem. But as soon as I create a new file, whether it’s just a blank page or if I'm importing a picture, it will start lagging and eventually it stops responding.
It's strange because I was able to use PS before, I've worked on other projects on the same computer, but all of a sudden, it just stopped working... I would really appreciate some help with this.
I don't think it's an issue with the compatibility because I have a very strong machine.
Here are my system specs:
Windows 7 64-Bit
Intel Core i7-2600 CPU 3.40GHz
16GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 4GB
I've tried resetting the preferences, enabling/disabling OpenGL Drawing, changing the amount of accessible RAM... I don't know what else to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It sounds like a pretty well-known problem with the display drivers.
You can verify it by going into Edit - Preferences - Performance, unchecking the [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing checkbox, then closing and restarting Photoshop.  If this restores functionality, you have a display driver problem.
To resolve it, go to the nVidia.com web site and locate their latest display driver release for your hardware and operating system.  Download and install it and you should be able to turn the OpenGL Drawing setting back on, so that you're not without these features:

  • Photoshop CS5 not responding to Cintiq stylus

I've been having problems with photoshop on my cintiq for a while now.  I'm using the Cintiq 12wx on the latest wacom driver, 6.1.6-5.  I just downloaded and installed the Photoshop 12.0.1 update and that didn't do anything to help me.  I have a dual monitor setup between my regular, main monitor and my cintiq.
When I open photoshop up on the tablet, as soon as I touch my stylus to the screen the cursor disappears and is sent over to my main monitor.  I can't get it to go back to the cintiq screen even if I recalibrate.  However, when I close photoshop and touch the blank screen the cursor acts perfectly normal.  I tried again in Flash CS5 and in non-adobe products and the cursor acts just as it should in all of them.  The only place this has popped up is in Photoshop.
In addition, I'm experiencing bad pressure sensitivity.  When I could still use the cursor the brush would not get as then as it should have, being stuck at a minimum of 5 or 6 pixels instead of one, and sometimes the pressure sensitivity would go away completely and I would get fat streaks all across my canvas.
Please let me know if there's anything that can be done to fix this ASAP!

I use Photoshop all day in my job, and have for years. This is the first time the tools have locked. I can't change from one marquee to another. More are joining this little strike: burn won't change to dodge, magic wand to its variant, etc. Crop works but every photo comes into the dialog box as having a pixel count of 1 per inch.
Tech support has over an hour wait. Anyone have a suggestion?

  • Over half the tools in Photoshop CS5 not responding

About half my tools on the PSCS5 tool bar will not work.  Nothing iv'e tried remedy the problem, short of reinstalling the program.  Tools that don't work are: move, marquee, magic wand, crop, pen, path selection, text, object rotate, and more.  Even when I use keyboard shortcuts, they don't work either.  I've tried clearing the settings, resetting, rebooting.
A symptom I notice is that my cursor arrow has a little box with three black lines in attached to it.    The clone, ereaser, paint tools work normal.  They show their usual cursor symbols.  My normal cursor is a black arrow.  Now in CS5 I have an arrow with line skymbol attached to it.
Dose anyone know what the symbol means and how to remidie the problem?  I also have the same CS5 program on my Macbook Pro.  All tools work properly.

  • Recently my CS5 illustrator and Photoshop is not responding frequently. How to rectify?

Recently my CS5 illustrator and Photoshop are not responding frequently. keep crashing. Any solution?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi Mylenium,
My imac processor 2.66GHZ intel core i5
    Memory 8G 1067MHz DDR3
    Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion)
When I try to launch CS5 illustrator, sometime it is not responding. It also happen after I launched illustrator and I was just doing some basic design, change type and zoom in and out.
If I opened both CS5 illustrator and photoshop, while I was working on illustrator and when it start not responding, photoshop also become not responding and vice versa.
I hope this information is adequate for you and troubleshoot for me what's wrong with my mac.
    Thanks

  • Photoshop CC not responding on Windos7

Photoshop CC not responding on Windows 7

    Hi Patsphoto,
First, make sure you have all the Photoshop updates installed - you should be on 14.1.2.
Then make sure that all your drivers are up to date (especially the video card driver, which should be updated from the GPU maker's website http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq1.html).
If you have any third party plugins, try disabling them.
    Same goes for Flash panels.
    Thanks!

  • Where/How to get download for Photoshop CS5 (not Extended)

I am setting up a new computer (Mac) and am not transferring data from old computer (clean install).  I own Photoshop CS5 (not the Extended), and need to re-download that version (I had upgraded via Adobe website).  The only version I see offered is the Extended, which I do not need or want.
How can I find the download I need?  I have all the serial numbers going back to Photoshop 2.
This always fills me with dread, with these applications- most unfriendly.
    Thanks

    Thank you both.
My account (Your Adobe Product and Online Service Registrations) shows the purchase of Photoshhop 12 (which I assume is CS5).  However, the other section which shows purchases is missing this one and several others, whioch were supposedly corrected the last time I went thru this.
I don't see where to figure out whether CS 5 or CS 5.1.  I had upgraded when the CS5 came out, and have updated it as updates are available.  I guess I can download whatever is available and see if my activation codes work; if not, I guess I can uninstall and talk to Adobe next week.
    Thanks!

  • CS5 not responding after opening Bridge and Camera Raw

I have been using bridge, camera raw and cs5 since it was released. I have not any problems until this morning. I am able to open Bridge and Camera Raw, but when trying to open PS CS5, it does not respond?
    Any suggestions?

Try resetting your preferences as described in the FAQ.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
You either have to physically delete (or rename) the preference files or, if using the Alt, Ctrl, and Shift method, be sure that you get a confirmation dialog.
This resets all settings in Photoshop to factory defaults.
A complete uninstall/re-install will not affect the preferences and a corrupt file there may be causing the problem.

  • ID CS5 Not Responding upon Packaging

    Hello,
For some time now, (Since my upgrade from CS4 to CS5) when I attempt to package a design file it often crashes ID. (Not Responding) I'm running a 27" iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.6.7 with 8 GB ram.
It will generally allow me to go as far as selecting what to package. Fonts, Images, etc. I found if I deselected the fonts for packaging, it will usually collect with no problems.
I figured it was some font issue hanging ID. Of course I have repaired permissions and ran disk first aid just incase it was a machine problem. All clear. I also ran FontDoctor which found no errors.
Here's where things get strange - If I leave open the Force Quit Appications window and then package a larger catalog file, even with fonts unchecked, the Force Quit Appications window will show InDesign alternating between not responding and responding. If I allow this to go on long enough, it will generally output the collected file...or crash entirely. ID looks quite unstable on my machine during this process.
If ID hangs long enough, a report is generated, which I dutifully send along to Adobe. Has anyone heard of this strange and annoying issue. For the record, it never happened to be on any previous version of ID. Only CS 5, and yes, I ran CS 4 on this same machine - no packaging issues.
    Thanks for any advice.

The hang reports are not the same as normal crash reports. They are analagous to running Sample Process in the Activity Monitor, but they are a more vague indicator, telling you statistically all the things ID was doing in the period of time sampled, but leaving the human to guess at which was problematic, which may not equate. Whereas when there is a crash, generally it's clear exactly which routine was at fault, though of course sometimes it's not obvious why.
I'm not sure why you don't see the crash logs as well. But fear not, I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to see them again unless the problem is solved.

Anyhow, your hang does show some interesting stuff:

That is, the packaging code called the EPS Page Item code, which called the Photoshop Import Filter, which called the AdobePSL library, which ultimately asked the system to allocate memory.
This suggests that the problem relates to some particular EPS file you have in your document (not a font). So I would try process of elimination with such files (divide and conquer). Save As to a tempory workign file. Delete half your images or half your pages. See if the problem is solved. Lather rinse repeat. Of course, if the problem is not 100% reproducible, this is a big pain. Still, it's the way to track it down.
I suspect that AdobePSL is the Adobe Photoshop Library, though that's inconsistent with the finger-pointing at an EPS file. I wouldn't expect PSL to handle them at all, and would expect PSL to be used for PSD files primarily. But still speculating.
Anyhow, there's quite a lot of stuff going on in PSLInsertGuide. I have no idea what that function does, but it seems weird to me that EPS files would have guides at all (PostScript has no such concept!), though of course postscript files (and Photoshop EPS files, and Photoshop PSD files) might very well. If you figure out what file it is, determining if there's something strange with guides in it might be helpful.
As for your screenshot...it's tough to know what's necessarily relevant. The complaints about scripting additions are presumably because you have a non-Intel version of some Quark scripting addition installed. You can certainly try removing it, but I'd be surprised if it helped.
malloc() failing is fascinating, especially correlating as it does with your hang report. malloc() is the routine C programs call to allocate memory dynamically. Anywhere from a few bytes to much much more. If malloc() fails badly enough to log to the console, I would have expected it to crash the program hard, rather than just sitting there spinning between 11:37:42 and 11:39:40. There's no accounting for taste.
malloc() is calling mmap(), a routine which controls the relationship between virtual memory pages and...other things. It's apparently doing so with a size of 802 megabytes, which is the sort of thing that's not expected to work and probably indicates a bug. And it gets back error code 12, which is:
    $ grep 12 /usr/include/sys/errno.h
    #define ENOMEM   12           /* Cannot allocate memory */
    Not a shocker.
Anyhow, there's some food for thought.

  • Adobe Bridge CS5 Not Responding

Periodically I will click from one folder to another folder in Bridge CS5 and it causes Bridge to freeze and give me a "Not Responding" message. I have never had a problem when running a batch or image processor through Bridge, just when clicking from one folder to another folder. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? If someone could explain it to me in a very simplistic form I'd appreciate it!

If you are building cache when you go to a folder, a spinning arrow in lower left corner, and then click on another folder before the process is finished Bridge can balk.  You can get a contaminated cache to foul things up.   To rebuild the cache for a folder click tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder.
You might compact the cache (edit/preferences/cache) to reduce its size and make it run more effeciently.

  • Photoshop CS2(Not Responding)

My photoshop cs2 program has been running very well for the past year or two. I have started saving files back and forth between cs3( at school) and cs2 (at home) for a school project. All the sudden, as I was painting a background to place in my project (magic wand>move tool) my cursor becomes an hourglass, all panels become blank, and at the top is says Photoshop (Not responding). This has happened 4 times now and I have lost my work each time. Can anyone help me?

This is a generic occurance on any program on windows basically asking you not to touch it until it has figured it out. It is a result usually of system resources being too low, meaning you need to upgrade your computer ideally in order to see less of the problem. If you press Ctrl+k, it prings up preferences. goto the Preformance panle, and if you can, set the memory usage for photoshop to what it says is an ideal range above it. This could help if you don't have anything else running with photoshop. Note that you must restart photoshop for the options to take effect here.
Also note that interactiing excessivly with windows during a "program not responding" period can cause the program to completely fail and loose your work. It is best to leave it along until it goes back to normal, then quickly save your work, then keep working.

  • Why does Camera Raw 6.7.1 w/ Photoshop CS5 not convert raw files from a Nikon D610 camera?

I just upgraded  my Nikon D90 camera to a D610.  I've been using Adobe Bridge to manage my photos made with the D90, and Camera Raw 6.3 to convert the raw files for use in Photoshop CS5.  The new D610 writes different raw files, so I upgraded Camera Raw to the latest version (6.7.1) which is said to be compatable with the latest Nikon cameras.
The D90 files still convert fine with Camera Raw 6.7.1, but the raw files from the D610 cannot be read.  Does anyone have any insight into why not?
    Thanks,
    JoelP

There will not be another update for Camera Raw 6.x which is the version that is compatible with Photoshop CS5. So you will not have a way to natively open your NEF files from the Nikon D610.  But you can download the DNG converter (version 8.3 RC) from Adobe Labs and use it to create digital negative copies of your NEF files. And then you can use those with the Camera Raw that you already have. Other alternatives would be to upgrade to Photoshop CC, or Photoshop Elements 12, or add Lightroom to your workflow. If you choose Lightroom you would have to use the 5.3 release candidate at this point to have support for your camera. It will, of course, be supported in the final version of Lightroom 5.3 as well as all subsequent versions of Lightroom.

  • Photoshop CS5 not working as editor in Lightroom 3.

Photoshop CS5 is not working as the default external editor in Lightroom 3. It works as the Additional Editor but then I cannot use any of the functions associated with the primary such as Merge to HDR, Open as Smart Object, Open as Layers. I have not been able to find an answer althought there are many similar problem threads.
What happens? When I try to edit in PS5 primary external editor, photoshop opens and nothing happens with .dng files. Tiff files open. Raw do not open Not sure about psd. Cannot do anything with multiple files as they do not open at all (PS5 opens as usual- Nothing happens if PS5 already open)
    Mac 10.8.3
    LR 3.6 Camera Raw 6.6
    PCS5 12.0.4 ACR 6.7
If anyone has solved this, please help me!!! I know its old software but it's what I have and would like it to work.
    Thanks you!

  • Photoshop CS5 not working with Lucida Grande Regular font

On my iMac Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz, I am running OS 10.6.7.
When using Photoshop CS5, if I try to use the font, Lucida Grande Regular, it causes an error.
"Could not use the type tool because of a program error."
When I try to open an existing file that has type layers that include the font Lucida Grande Regular, Photoshop will not open the file. I have several of these files that I want to use. I can open them on another Macintosh and everything works fine.
First I get a message window that says, " Some text layers might need to be updated before they can be used for vector based output. Do you want to update these layers now?" I click on update and then get the following message. "Could not complete your request because of a program error."
I have updated Photoshop CS5 to the latest version, 12.0.4.
I have run the FontTest.jsx script and it shows an error for Lucida Grande Regular.
(IOError: General Photoshop error occurred. This functionality may not be available in this version of Photoshop.
    - <no additional information available>)
The other 100+ fonts on my machine did not create errors.
Since Lucida Grande Regular is an essential font for Mac OS X, I re-installed OS 10.6 in order to have a new version of Lucida Grande Regular. After that re-install I am having the same problems with the font not working in Photoshop.
It also does not work with Adobe InDesign CS5. The font does work in Microsoft Word.
The program Font Book verifies Lucida Grande Regular.
Other fonts including, Lucida Grande Bold, work fine in Photoshop and InDesign.
What can I do to get Photoshop CS5 to work with Lucida Grande Regular?

Wow, I'm so glad I found this thread. This problem has been dogging me for years, and it's so sporadic that I've been afraid of breathing the wrong way lest I somehow incur that diabolical Program Error dialog. I'd managed to reach a truce with Photoshop CS5, getting it into a barely working state, and avoiding all updates... until Lion came along today. Then I updated to CS5 12.0.4, and the Program Errors were back again.
Now I see that the problem does seem to be related to the Lucida Grande font. If there's a layer with that font in it, not only can I not edit that text, but I can't marquee select anything, nor drag any shapes. Deleting caches and massaging fonts are completely ineffectual measures... but if I delete the Lucida layers entirely, we're back in business.
    At least so far.
Funny to think that of all the innovations I'd like to see Photoshop adopt, the fixing of this one issue is the thing I'd like to see most. I'll be keeping my eye on this thread, and any updates by Mr. Cox.

  • Photoshop CS5 not printing correctly

I am trying to print a jpeg from Photoshop with no luck. I get a thumbnail sized image every time. One thing to note, if I use larger paper the thumbnail scales up.
HP Compaq 8100 Elite running Win 7 Pro x64 SP1
Adobe Photoshop CS5 patched to 12.0.4
    Xerox Phaser 7760DN PS
Any help would be appreciated. Trouble shooting steps have included adjusting every print option I could find.

    Xerox Phaser 7760DN PS
Well, PS stands for PostScript and there are multiple language levels/ versions of it. If the driver allows, choose a more compatible older one, e.g. level 2 in favor of level 3. Similarly, the printer itself or the driver may offer means to control how specific sub-sets are interpreted, for instance with regards to font handling. Such printing errors often come down to "bad" PostScript being misinterpreted by the printer. If all else fails, also look whether you can install it with PCL emulation or similar wit ha different driver. That may also work...
