Photoshop CS5 creates file and then doesn't allow me to open it.

I created a file on Photoshop CS5, saved it, and now when I try to open it says: "Could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of Photoshop." How can I open the file? How come the same program cannot open its own file? Can anybody help me with this? Thanks.

That can happen in any version of Photoshop and it can be for one of at least two reasons:
1.— The file was over 2 GB in size and was saved as a PSD rather than a PSB file; or
2.— The file got corrupted.  This can happen when attempting to work across a network or with Norton Anti Virus (NAV) running on your computer.
Always work locally.  To open a file stored on a network volume, copy the CLOSED file in the Finder to your local hard drive first, then open the local file.  Once you are done working on the image, save the file on your local hard drive, close it and copy the CLOSED file back to the server.
Sometimes, Illustrator or GraphicConverter can recover the flattened composite in a corrupted file if you're lucky, but the layers will be toast.
If the file was indeed over 2 GB and saved as a PSD rather than a PSB, I know of no way to open it.
Give us some more details of the history of the file and maybe someone else will have other ideas.

  • Can't Open file--and then ALL backups also will not open. SEVERE BUG

    After losing 2 FULL day's work to files that inexplicably and suddenly would not open, I read discussion board questions and rebuilt the entire presentations from Keynote, instead of starting with PowerPoint imports.
    However the same thing happened. Worse, when it happens, ALL THE BACKUPS THAT I HAD BEEN SAVING ARE ALSO NOT ABLE TO OPEN. How can that be?
    I have had it with Keynote. If I could get my money back I would.
    But I'd pay a *lot more* money to have never heard of the program and not have wasted now four full day's work...gone.

    I am using Keynote 2.0.2, and after installing Mac OS X 10.4.6, I have been unable to open either of 2 Keynote files I have tried to open since the installation. I am hesitant to try opening any other presentations, though I may copy other presentations to a safe place and then trying. I get a message each time that the file may not be opened "because it is damaged." I tried deleting the Keynote preferences file and reinstalling Keynote, but I could still not open the prior presentations. I don't know if this is a 10.4.6 issue or a Keynote issue, but I thought I would mention it. I am nervous about using Keynote again until I hear what is causing the problem and knowing there is a fix, especially if others are having the same problem...

    If prefs are the same as Settings on a MAC, OK, it would have been more
    clear to me if you had said Settings since I didn't see anything related to
    prefs. On a PC, I know what you mean, On a MAC, wasn't sure.

    Both are referencing cooltype.dll. I ran Font Doctor on all system and non-system fonts and found no errors. Booted without Extensis Suitcase loading. Nothing works. All 32 bit programs work fine. Any clues would be appreciated.

    It does not necessarily mean a "corrupt" font, but can be a font that PrPro, and PS, cannot handle.
    Though I have read that changes have been made, Open Office's DejaVu font would crash PrPro's Titler - every time. There are quite a few others. Font Dr, and similar utilities, will not see the font(s) as corrupt, but they are so poorly designed, that PrPro and PS cannot deal with them.
    Though it can be a long, drawn out process, one can often zero in on the problem font(s), with a little work. This is accomplished by first defining the "System Fonts," and not touching them. Then, uninstall half of the remaining fonts, and testing PrPro and PS. If they launch fine, you know that somewhere in that list of fonts, the problem exists. If there is still a failure to launch, chances are good that the problem font(s) reside in that half, that are still installed. Note: because the problem still exists, does not guarantee that there are NOT problem fonts in that uninstalled group, so keep that in mind.
    Repeat the proces, by uninstalling half of the remaining fonts and testing.
    If necessary, repeat by removing half of the now remaining fonts and testing.
    When you get to a point, where you are no longer getting problems, reinstall fonts, in small groups, testing in between. The smaller the groups, the easier it will be to pinpoint the problem font(s).
    Keep notes on which fonts you are uninstalling and reinstalling, until you narrow it down to the problem font(s).
    I would start by uninstalling any "free fonts," and then commercial, 3rd party fonts. A lot of free fonts are just poorly designed, and can cause issues, though they might work fine in some other programs.
    I use a font manager, so that I only have ~ 350 fonts installed at one time, and then dynamically install fonts, as needed for Projects. That keeps my machine clean, and if, upon installation, I get a crash/hang, I know that at least one font in that Set is causing it. This helps, as my workstation has ~ 19,000 fonts on it, and some are free fonts, and many are from 3rd parties. Some are also very, very old.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    PS - one common cause for hangs on loading PrPro can be from VST's, used in Audio-editing. If you also have a lot of VST's, you could have two issues with two separate programs, i..e. PS hanging on fonts, and PrPro hanging on VST's. The results would be the same, but the causes could be different. That leads to even more work. For PrPro, also see this ARTICLE. If you get PS launching, but PrPro is still not functioning, drop by the PrPro Forum, and someone can help you there.

  • Taking the kth-column of multiple files and then joining them together in a single file

    Hi
    I would like some help with array manipulation
    I have multiple (1000) files with 5 columns each and 20,000 rows. The first row of each file has a header that labels the columns.
    I would like to be able to read these files, pull out colum 3 from each file and then build these into a new 2D array. It would be nice if they also had their corresponding header labels. So then I would end up with the new 2D array containing 1,000 columns (corresponding to column 3 of each of my 1000 files) with 20,000 rows plus a first row with the header labels.
    I would also like the option to in future select column 2 for example, or column 5; plus I would also like the functionality to allow me to perhasp pull out more than one colum, e.g. colum 2 and 3, before we build the new array.
    I hope I made some sense and that someone can help. Thanks you

    RVR,
    This is a great exercise to get familiar with LabVIEW's array functions.  A great place to start is actually the LabVIEW help on arrays, located here:
    http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361B-01/lvconcepts/grouping_data_with/
    Depending on your data format, you can probably use the Read From Spreadsheet File VI to bring your data into a 2-d array.  You could then use the index array VI to pull your column out.  You could do this in a For loop and use Autoindexing to build your 1,000 column resulting array.  I would leave everything as a String format until I'm done.
    This doesn't sound like a very difficult task.  Good luck!

  • Adding line to txt file and then rename

    Hello there. I am trying to create a class that will add a line to a txt file and then if the nuber of lines are greater than 5 it will rename the file.
    I think I have solved it with this class.
    My problem is that the file2.renameTo does not work does anyone have any suggestions why?
             public void CopyLines(String string, String location, String fileName) throws IOException {
                 BufferedReader inputStream = null;

                   GregorianCalendar calendar = new GregorianCalendar(Locale.UK);
                boolean b=false;
                 try {
                     int counter = 0;
                      File file2 = new File(location + fileName);
                      ArrayList arrays = new ArrayList();
                      if (file2.exists()){
                     inputStream =
                         new BufferedReader(new FileReader(file2));
                     String l;
                     while ((l = inputStream.readLine()) != null) {
                          arrays.add(l);
                         counter++;
                     outputStream =
                         new PrintWriter(new FileWriter(location + fileName));
                      if (!arrays.isEmpty()){
                           for(int i= 0; i<arrays.size();i++){
                              outputStream.println(arrays.get(i));
                     outputStream.println(string);
                     if (counter>5){
                          String newFileName = location + fileName + calendar.getTime().getTime();
                          b = file2.renameTo(new File(newFileName));

  • With Mozilla Firefox, I cannot go to "File" and then "Send Link" so as to pull up an email ready to send via Outlook Express, as I can with Internet Explorer - how do I change the settings to permit this?

    If I am using Explorer, I can go to "File" and then "Send Link" -
    an email will automaticallt pop up, with the website url pasted in;
    I merely put in the recipents email address, hit Send, and away it goes
    With Firefox, the email does not pop up; I have to manually pull up an email ("create mail"), then copy and paste the website url
    displayed by Firefox
    I want to override this default to Explorer

    Hi,
    Please try this: '''Tools''' (or '''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Options''' > '''Applications'''. Look for or start typing '''mailto''' in the search box and for the '''Action''' change it to the desired mail client (the application that opens up in Explorer) if the value is different.

  • I've got Photoshop CS5 Extended Student and Teacher Edition - Upgrade to CS6 Extended possible?

    Dear ladies and gentlemen,
    I bought Photoshop CS5 Extended Student and Teacher Edition a few years ago. Now I want to upgrade to CS6 Extended. Is there any chance to do this without buying Photoshop CS6 Extended new? I don't want to subscribe to the Creative Cloud. I just want to buy an upgrade. If there is one, please tell me, where I can find it.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Matthias Bruns

    There are no upgrades from educational vesion to educational version at the new version is cheaper than then upgrade price.

    When I click "File" and then "New" it keeps opening a new file as a layer and not a background. RGB is selected as the mode.
    With new files opening as a layer and not a background I'm not able to create multiple layers and it wont let me convert the layer to the background.
    How did this happen. I used PS just yesterday and had no problems. Today my computer did mandatory updates and now this.

    Yes. You are using the Ellipse Tool's Pixel option. So it is laying down pixels as it is supposed to do without creating a layer.
    Choose the Shape option:
    Also Layer menu > New Layer creates layers and the curled paper at the bottom of your Layers palette also creates a New Layer. I hope those work.

    Adobe has made this process much simpler in recent years.
    No need to re-install any version earlier than the current version (CS6). All installers (upgrade or full) contain the full program code. The difference between full and upgrade is in the serial number.
    All you need do is download (link below) and install CS6, enter the CS6 upgrade serial number then enter the CS5 serial number (even if that too is an upgrade).
    Download CS6 products

    Do you mean that PSD comes as a default option or that JPEG is not available no matter what?
    Did you add a layer?  Did you change the bit depth?  Did you add transparency?   The JPEG format does not support layers, nor 16-bit images, nor transparency.

    I had to upload 33 videos to youtube today
    This has taken tooo long
    Just wondering, is it better to create a master file and then upload to youtube?
    I could maybe just copy the files to another machine and leave it to upload?
    Thanks
    Omar

    just to add:
    don't try to upload your Masterfile to YouTube!
    usually, the Masterfile is a copy of the projects timeline = proRes.
    that creates incredible large files = time for upload, wasting bandwidth, and YT will complain 'wrong settings'
    After saving a masterfile, which goes fast, you should use a 'Converter' of your choice (QuicktimePro, Mpg Streamclip, Compressor) to transcode into YT's recommended upload settings.-

    I am trying to move my library and playlists to a new computer by burning to CD's. However, I followed the directions by going to File and then Library - then they said to go to burn CD(s) - I DO NOT have that option for some reason. How do I do this? I have done the library sharing thing but I am getting rid of my primary computer and am afraid I will lose the library.

    To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
    Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
    But however you do choose to link the two machines...
    Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
    and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
    This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
    Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
    Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

    TD
