Photoshop Cs5 effects applying inward

Hi, I recently noticed that my photoshop filters are applying inward. I'm following some tutorials; for example, one requires you to blur and instead of bluring "outward", it blurs "inward" so the original image gets smaller. When applying wind, my image gets thinner and thinner (photoshop chipping away) whereas in the tutorial the images gets stretched as the wind is apllied. How can I fix this?

I can't find the original tutorial now, since I moved on. However, this one kinda is like it. http://www.photoshoplab.com/light-your-house-on-fire.html . And this one too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygZAqGRGAzY In the latter example, my black box just gets smaller when I blur it, instead of "fuzzying outward"

  • Why doesn't Photoshop CS5 automatically scale strokes and effects?

I am looking everywhere for why Photoshop CS5 doesn't automatically scale strokes and effects. I could've sworn there was a preference in CS4 but there's nothing resembling this in CS5. Driving me crazy!
Whenever I do a Free Transform, the effects are completely out of whack and force me to waste time resetting them individually, layer by layer. I used to be able to grab any object or group of objects, do a transformation and Photoshop automatically recalculated. If anyone has a tip on how to avoid the annoyance of having to go layer by layer and forcibly adjusting that would be great.

Layer style effect setting are in absolute pixel size values so if you change the scale of a layer the style size remains the same. You can edit the layers style effects after tou do a transform on the layer and change the absolute setting. If the layer has been rastersized or flattened you can not. I have request that Adobe add support for relative settings like inches, cm, mm etc which is relative to the documents dpi resolution. This would be very helpful for recording actions.
However photoshop can scale existing layer style for you when you use Image Size there is a check box.  If you need to scale a single layer and have its style scaled you need to do it in a round about way. Convert the layer to a smart object. Then instead of using transform double click on the layser smart object icon in the layers palette.  Photoshop will open that layer embedded smart object in Photoshop for you to work on it.. Use Image Size to resize the layer up or down in size and check resample constrain and the scale style check box.  Then use menu File>Save.  Photoshop will then update the embedded smart object in the smart object layer and you can close the document Photoshop opened for you to work on the smart object.

I don't know why there has been doubt since post #12 where I explained that Ps must be running in 64-bit mode when more than 2100 MB RAM is reported in Preferences.
Anyway, here's a screenshot of Activity Monitor showing CS6 in 64-bit mode and CS5.1 in 32-bit mode.

  • Photoshop cs5 liquify filter shows no effect until after clicking OK

I"m using photoshop cs5 and the liquify filter dosen't show any effect until after I've clicked ok. I've checked, and unchecked "show backdrop" and the opacity is set to 100%. I'm stumped.

I solved my own problem. I reset my preferences by closing photoshop, then re-starting the program while holding ctrl-alt-shift. I then unchecked "show backdrop."

  • Aperture 3 edits are not applied when opening in Photoshop CS5.

I have Photoshop CS5 selected as external editor.  I apply some edits in Aperture 3 and then open in Photoshop cs5 to do heavier work, but aperture 3 edits are not applied.  I get a new image from Master.  How do I get the edited image to open in Photoshop CS5?  I would rather do the cropping and simpler edits in Aperture, then if needed open the edited file into CS5.  I can open the file, but it is missing all of my edits.  I have basically a raw master file that I have to start with, but don't have the advantage of the raw file.

I'm right clicking on the photo and selecting -> edit with Edit with Adobe Photoshop CS5.  The photo opens in Adobe, but it doesn't have any of the Aperture edits applied to it.  I would have to start from scratch doing these in photoshop.  I want to be able to do the Raw adjustments in Aperture and then open into Photoshop.
To test I applied a crop in Aperture and then opened that file in Photoshop.  The full size image opens in Photoshop.

  • How do I achieve this effect in Photoshop CS5?

    Hi all,
I'm using Photoshop CS5 and I'd like to know how can I achieve the following effect: I have a full color picture of a woman, like the one below, and I would like to replicate this effect in which the full color woman is blended with the background turning her into purple and black only.
I'm a newbie, and I am not too familiar with the 'channels' concept, so I would appreciate some specific reply -not necessarily step-by-step but almost, lol!
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Instead of using channels, you can convert your image to black and white then create a new layer and fill that layer with your color of choice, then either use the blend modes and/or reduce the opacity until it looks good to you.
Another way is use the black and white adjustment layer and enable the colorize check box and choose purple.
If I recall the hue/saturation/luminance adjustment layer also has a colorize check box. (I would check but I am in the process of redoing my drive)

  • Importing a video layer from photoshop cs5 to after effects cs5

hi - you guys were so brilliant and prompt on answering my last question. thankyou
i did have another i needed help with -
is it possible to bring in a video layer from photoshop cs5 to after effects cs5 - i tried but it said "the photoshop library operation failed because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop"
    thanks again

In the import dialog box, uncheck the Photoshop Sequence option.
The problem is the number on the end of your file name.  When After Effects sees a number there, and there are other files in that directory with the same name and a number, it thinks the images are part of a sequence and will enable that checkbox.

  • CS5 - Missing gradient editor in Photoshop Live Effects/Stroke

Try this: select an object, apply a photoshop smart effect > stroke > Fill type: gradient
and let me know if you have any way to edit the gradient there, I can't figure out how to work that.
    Thanks!

I'm trying to apply a gradient stroke without resorting to outlining the path I'm working with... but apart of that, WTF? You guys put in a feature that works only 50% to keep stuff compatible? Really? What kind of product management do you guys have over there? C'mon!
Fireworks is driving me crazy, stuff that is supposed to be 27 pixels looks out of sync, and even snapping to pixel doesn't do the magic most of the time.
not to mention the hilarious decision of somebody to make the autoshape dialog NOT pick up the Uber-common CTRL-A shortcut, so when I'm trying to select all the content in one of the inputs, selects all my artwork instead.
I have more, are you interested?

Update/ adjust your graphics card driver. Both crashes seem pretty clearly related to issues with graphics acceleration not working as required by both programs.

  • Lighting effects photoshop CS5

Have they gone... or have hte been moved?
    I can't find them anywhere.

For those of us who do not know (I didn't) how to tun on 32 bit addressing for the application...
•Quit Photoshop if you have it open...
•Find the Photoshop CS5 application icon
    • Right click on it and select "GET INFO".
When the Information window opens you need to tick the box that says "Open in 32-bit mode"
    •Close the information window.
    •Re launch photoshop
•As you probably already know, this filter only works in RGB mode
    You're ready...

  • Photoshop CS5.5 Layers partially disappear. Cannot get them back.

Adobe CS5.5 Photoshop running on Mac OS X.
This is a brand new installation, just purchased and installed last week, and this is the first graphic heavy task I have attempted using Photoshop CS5.5. I was working in a document (photo-manipulation) and eveyrthing was going very, very smoothly. I was using mostly Masks. The issue ocurred immediately after I tried to apply a Hue/Saturation effect to the topmost layer. All the layers experienced partial disappearing. Even though they appear whole in the layers tab, on the stage huge parts are missing.
    See this screenshot:
I tried to undo the Hue/Saturation, close Photoshop completely and reopen, and double checking the settings on each layer. I was saving as I went along but even closing without saving and re-opening the file did not help much. Most of the disppeared portions have returned, but there are still "chunks", sort to speak, that are "missing". I have spent about four hours on this piece so far, and I really do not want to have to go back and re-do the "missing" parts (that are not really missing just not showing up). And the layer with the knight is not supposed to be black, Photoshop did that all on its own. O.o
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a way to get all of each layer back visible? I have used Photoshop CS2 and I have Photoshop CS4 on my other computer, but I have never had this happen in any of the earlier versions. And this being the first time I used Photoshop CS5.5 for more than just saving screenshots... Yeah. Any ideas?
    ~Jacquelyn

On your recommendation, I tried turning off the OpenGL and restarted Photoshop. I also checked the blend settings. No change. I am beginning to think that perhaps the missing "chunks" on the various layers were somehow deleted. Though I did not select nor delete anything. It is very curious. I wish I knew what happened (or what I did by accident) so I can prevent this type of thing from happening in the future.
Anyway, I spent a few extra hours re-doing the parts that were "missing" and now the piece is finished. http://fav.me/d49b0sz

  • Photoshop CS5 problem - Is this Banding?

    Hi
I am using Adobe lightroom 3.0.64 to process RAW photos from my Canon Camera. Then I touch up the pictures in Photoshop CS5. I have been working on some snooted background shots recently and I am experiencing a problem when I edit the photos in photoshop. It appears to be some of kind artifacting or distortion particularly noticeable if using graduated lighting. Looking on the web I have come across references to "banding". I am not sure if this is the problem I am experiencing, but I would appreciate it if someone could take a look.
Either way any help on how to get rid of this issue "post" picture taken would be greatly appreciated.
I have tried duplicating a layer/Blurring it and then using masks to bring out the main focus of the picture. This doesnt seem to work very well and just makes the banding look more noticeable.
I have uploaded a hi-res version of the file:
    http://www.lakelanddigitalmedia.com/stock/bandingproblem.jpg
    and circled the problem areas.
Any help would be most appreciated.

I can see the same posterization effect when I click on that one too. Does that mean the problem is to do with the screen display profile after all, and I should change the profile to Srgb as suggested.
There's no easy answer, but in general unless your monitor is actually displaying the sRGB color space accurately I'd say it's not generally a good idea to throw out a display profile that brings your particular monitor into proper calibration.
If you want your document products - i.e., that which you publish or print - to hide the posterization, then I suggest making sure Dithering is enabled in your color preferences.  That way when the conversion of the document profile to sRGB occurs, the gradients will look smooth.
Today's monitors are good enough that you can easily see 256 different shades of gray.  The posterization you're seeing may well be because of that - OR - you may be experiencing the problem I reported in this thread:  http://forums.adobe.com/message/3473424
Try going into Edit - Preferences - Performance, [Advanced] and changing your OpenGL mode in Photoshop to Basic, then restarting Photoshop.  Does that help make your rose image look better on your monitor?

  • My Mac completely seizes when using the Gradient Tool in Photoshop CS5

I've recently upgraded to CS5 and in tandem have replaced my 8Gb of RAM with 16Gb on an iMac 27" with a 2.8Ghz Intel Core i7.
The problem that I've encountered with Photoshop seems to be connected with the COMBINED effect of these two upgrades. I just need to determine where the problem lies.
Whilst attempting to apply a gradient (white to transparent) using Photoshop CS5 on a CMYK file my Mac completely seizes. And I mean completely! No 'force quit' option, nothing. Even the little light on my mouse goes out. However, suspecting that it may be a CS5 problem I tried the same procedure using CS4. Hey presto – no problem. Narrowing the area down still further I re-installed the original 8Gb chips and the problem went away. Back to the 16Gb and the problem reoccurs. I've also found that using the 'Auto Merge' facility also causes the same seizure.
So, is it a RAM problem or a CS5 problem or a combination of the two? I've run Memtest the result of which indicated that the new RAM was behaving itself. The new memory is Kingston's finest and has had no adverse effects anywhere else on the system. If anyone can come up with a definitive answer I'd be grateful, especially if it means I can get my memory supplier to exchange my purchase gratis.

If the whole machine freezes, then you are most likely looking at a hardware problem.
Narrowing the area down still further I re-installed the original 8Gb chips and the problem went away.
Yep, that's more evidence that the problem is in your hardware.
Application software cannot cause a lockup like that.  Only hardware, low level drivers and the OS can cause a lockup like that.
In your case, it seems to be the hardware (RAM chips or motherboard).
Unfortunately, software RAM tests are useless.  But you've got a test that stresses the RAM system more than those tests: it's called Photoshop.
We have seen several reports recently of RAM problems in newer iMacs. There appears to be a problem with the RAM specification, testing, or the motherboards.  Unfortunately, we don't yet have enough details to determine the root cause of the issues.  But most people have fixed the problem by swapping out the RAM.

  • How can I diagnose an intermittent crash when saving in Photoshop CS5 in Windows 7 (64bit)?

    Hello,
I have been experiencing an intermittent crash of Photoshop CS5 in Windows 7 when saving. I cannot effectively reproduce the problem and am having difficulty diagnosing the cause of the it. I have updated Photoshop to 12.0.4.0 and still experience the crash. Can someone offer advice as to how to resolve this issue? It is troublesome since I lose all my work without any means of recovery when it happens.
    Hardware:
    AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHz
    8GB RAM
    AMD Radeon HD 5450
    Software:
Windows 7 Home Premium Version 6.1 (Build 7601: Service Pack 1)
    Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 x64
    Thanks in advance.

    Hunt,
Thanks for the advice. Here is what I have done so far which has not alleviated the crashes while saving:
Only run the application as administrator
    Clear the preferences file
Disabled virus checking on files I am using
Disabled virus checking on file writes (just in case the above was not enough)
