Photoshop CS5 isn't allowing me to enable OpenGL, yet CS4 does?

On Photoshop CS4, it let me check the box to enable OpenGL Drawing. Now I just got Photoshop CS5 and it's all grayed out and saying graphics hardware acceleration is unavailable. What gives?
I'm running Windows 7 and this is the information on my Graphics Card:
Chip Type: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
DAC Type: Internal
Adapter String: Mobile Intel(R) GMA 4500MHD
Bios Information: Intel Video BIOS
Total Available Graphics Memory: 1341 MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 128 MB
System Video Memory: 0 MB
Shared System Memory: 1213 MB

I had a very similar problem with my ATI card.
Turns out Chris Cox was right on target with his comment that the driver wasn't working correctly, and a driver update from ATI (that wasn't available when I first reported the problem) finally fixed it.
There's information on working around the problem in this thread that can help you: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/635966
Update your drivers, and if it doesn't fix it correspond with the video interface manufacturer and ask them for a fix.

  • Photoshop CS5/Lightroom 3 integration issue - "Edit Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" does not work

When clicking "Edit Copy with Lightoomroom Adjustments" from Lightroom, I get an error in Lightroom 3 complaining that the Camera Raw plug-in is not up to date; full message below.
"This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 6.1 for full compatibility.
Camera Raw version 4.6 is the latest version available for Photoshop CS3. If raw file support for your camera was introduced after Camera Raw 4.6, the Photoshop integration features in Lightroom require Photoshop CS4 and the latest Camera Raw version 5 plug-in.
The version of Camera Raw plug-in currently installed is 0.0."
After I click "Open Anyways", Photoshop CS5 is initiated but it seems to have lost context of why it is opened and asks me what file I want to open (i.e. the Open As dialog).
"Edit Copy" and "Edit Original" from Lightroom 3 works as expected and opens images fine in Photoshop, CS5 however.
My installation is on Windows 7. I currently also have Lightroom 1.4 and Photoshop CS3 installed. Everything worked fine with the old configuration. I also tried the same workflow in Lightroom 1.4 again just now, which is now linked to CS5 instead of CS3. The "Edit Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" also work just fine.
Things that I have tried but do not worked:
I did an Update via the Help -> Update menu, and also manually downloaded the Camera Raw 6.1 plug-in.
Blew away the Photoshop preferences file
Made sure that Lightroom 3 points to Photoshop for editor
I'm thinking that I'll try uninstall CS3 next. Anyone else encountered this issue?

[CS5.1 (12.1) ACR 6.5RC / LR 3.5RC; MacbookPro 4gb Leopard 10.5.8 ] As a Lightroom instructor, up until now this has been a vexxing problem to explain to my students. Even if ACR in Photoshop is up to date (I just downloaded 6.5RC and installed the PS Plugin), I still get the error when attempting to edit from Lightroom 3.5RC. I deleted the PS prefs file to no avail. I was not willing to re-install Photoshop as a solution (per some blog's suggestion), although that might be the ultimate answer. But what an ordeal if so!
For a solution, I went back to a resolution I devised when I had a CS3 compatibility problem with LR3. I went into the Preferences of Lightroom and manually chose the Photoshop app as the "custom" image editor. I went back to edit the file in PS from Lightroom and the ACR error disappeared. Try it. Yes, this means you need to use the Custom editor as your image editor, but it seems to have resolved the issue.

  • Photoshop CS5 Slow Panning

Hi, I started this discussion in a different thread (Photoshop CS5 Very Slow Liquify) - my problem concerns panning in Photoshop CS5, which is very slow and jerky when compared to Photoshop CS4. To go into more detail this is my set up and the problem I'm finding.
I'm using a brand new MacBook Pro i7 with 4GB Ram. My computer is set to Automatic Graphic Switching (I have also tried it with automatic graphic switching turned off, forcing it to use the high performance graphic card, with exactly the same results). In Photoshop CS5 prefs, it is set to enable OpenGL Drawing and in the advanced setting it is set to Advanced (Again, here I have tried all the other settings, including disabling OpenGL with the same results).
When I open a 21MP image, zoomed to 100% and try to pan across the image using the trackpad on my MBP, the response is very slow and jerky (when moving slowly you can see that the image jumps several pixels in the direction of the movement rather than moving smoothly). It takes approximately 5 'sweeps' of the trackpad to move across the entire image.
Compare this to the same image opened in Photoshop CS4, panning is much smoother and more responsive and only takes 2 sweeps of the track pad to move across the image.
Incidently the slow panning is also evident in Adobe Camera Raw 6.0, and is if anything even more slow and unresponsive when compared to ACR 5.7.
This direct comparison between Photoshop CS5 and CS4 ( and ACR 6 & 5.7) on the same computer with the same settings is evident to me that there is a real issue here with the new software.

I know this is a Mac thread, but I thought this information might help.
It is very clear that this problem is an Adobe software issue and not hardware or OS brand or version.
If panning can be good anywhere (which it is), it can be equally good everywhere.  Somebody at Adobe has the software doing the wrong thing at the wrong time.
    I'm on Win 7.  Desktop. Mouse. i5 3.2GHz  8GB  NVidia GT320   21 MegaPixel file
In Photoshop CS5, when I pan (click and drag) with the hand tool @100% (or any magnification):
Open GL OFF:     Panning is perfect, as if the image is mechanically connected to the mouse.
Open GL ON (any combination of settings):   Panning is pretty good (tolerable), but jerky and should be fixed.
    Bridge:
21MP file @100% (preview mode: spacebar + mouseclick).  Panning is pretty good/jerky, about like in Photoshop with OGL on.
When I check "Use Software Rendering" the panning becomes more jerky and on the verge of intolerable.
    Adobe Camera Raw 6.1:
21MP CR2 file  @ any magnification. Panning is totally unuseable and makes me want to NEVER buy or use anything Adobe EVER again!!!!
(200% and greater the panning is a little less bad than it is at 100% or lower)
Using the spot removal tool in ACR is an equally HORRIFYING experience.
Why must I report this stuff. Why don't I get paid for all this troubleshooting? Adobe is supposed to deliver a finished product. If I delivered unfinished junk like this in my business, I'd be horrifyingly embarrassed!
Please Adobe, I NEVER want extra features if they don't work right. I ALWAYS want a fully debugged program with fewer features over a buggy (beta?) program with more features.
There are lots of other things newly wront with CS5 (over earlier versions) but that is for a different thread.
There are a few things in CS5 that I like, but this thing should still be a beta in the development, debugging, and refining stages.

  • Photoshop CS3 allows me to enable Open GL but CS4 does not Brand new MacPro with ATI 4870 card

    Hi,
I just bought a brand new 8 core Mac Pro and have both the ATI 4870 graphics card and the Nvidia GT 120 card. Pshop CS3 allows me to "enable openGL" in the prefs and utiizes it when doing 3d stuff... however, CS4 has it dimmed in the prefs, thereby not allowing me to check it (it is dimmed and unchecked I should say) and when I do 3d stuff a dialog box saying
"Your video card does not meet the requirements for hardware-accelerated 3D rendering. All 3D will be rendered with software only."
    any thoughts?
    thanks in advance.

yeah, short term test deems keeping both cards in.
So, here are the results: Notes: I have 2 monitors, an Apple 30" and Apple 23". The 30" can only be used in the dual link dvi port and NOT the Mini Display port. Second: The ATI 4870 seems to have an issue with the Mini Display port, it does not work, alone or in tandem with the dual link dvi port being used. Apple is replacing the card (heretofore, I had no cause to use the Mini Display port on the 4870 at all) Third: Only Photoshop CS4 extended was used to see if the card was detected and if it had enabled Open GL
ATI 4870 - dual link used, Mini Display NOT used: Photoshop sees the card and enables Open GL
ATI 4870 - dual link used, MIni Display used: didn't test because Mini Display port did not work.
ATI 4870 - dual link NOT used, Mini Display used: didn't test because Mini Display port did not work
Nvidia GT120 - dual link used, Mini Display NOT used: Photoshop sees the card and enables Open GL
Nvidia GT120 - dual link used, Mini Display used: Photoshop does not see the card and thus Open GL is NOT enabled.
Nvidia GT120 - dual link NOT used, Mini Display used: Photoshop does see the card and Open GL is enabled
ATI 4870 Dual link used,  Nvidia GT120 Mini Display used: Photoshop does not see a card and Open GL is NOT enabled.
ATI 4870 Mini Display used, Nvidia GT120 dual link used: did not test because ATI Mini Display port did not work

  • Photoshop CS5: border in full screen mode

I ran this by in the User forums. Now I think I should file it as a bug.
I use full screen mode in PS. It's important to me,especially when I take screenshots.
Photoshop CS5 shows a border in full screen. Something CS4 or even Bridge CS5 doesn't do. I've attached an example:
My video card is not detected by CS5 (or CS4) so the GPU options are grayed out in Preferences. I could shut off aero...but I like the functions it provides and I don't think I should switch in and out for one program. If any of the programmers here look at the situation....I'd like to know if they can fix it in a future update release.

  • Photoshop CS5 Users - Performance Checks Wanted From You

A few days ago, while discussing various system configurations in answer to posts asking about what's best in new computers, it occurred to me that while we all know our own computers pretty well, it's practically impossible, without a whole bunch of different systems to work with on hand, to judge what system works best with Photoshop.  Is more cores better?  A superduper video card?  Huge RAM?
    Got a few minutes?
I propose we try a few "real world" things with Photoshop CS5 on our systems and report how quickly/interactively it does them, as well as our system configurations, in an attempt to understand what works best.  This isn't a "one upsmanship" contest, but just a poll to see what systems really blaze through Photoshop work.
Let's try to keep the list of "some things" fairly small, so we can all easily try them.  And the timing isn't too critical... Use a stopwatch if you can, or just watch the second hand on your watch or a clock and guestimate the timing to the nearest second.
List these things about your system:
    A. Your architecture (PC / Mac) and what OS you're running.
    B.  Number of processors / processor models / GHz speed.
    C.  RAM size, speed.
    D.  Hard drives (OS, Photo storage, Photoshop scratch), their sizes and speeds.
    E.  Video card (model, graphics memory on board).
    F.  Your Photoshop Preferences settings - Amount of RAM you've allotted Photoshop, whether you have OpenGL enabled, scratch disk allocations.
Here are the things I think might be useful for multiple people to try and let us know the time it takes:
    1.  Cold start Photoshop, from where it is not running.  How long does this take from start to everything on the screen painted and ready to work?  Do it several times.  If you use both the 32 bit version and the 64 bit version, see if there's a difference in startup time for each.  This test represents how long you'll have to wait when inspiration hits you and before you can start working.
    2. Create a big, new RGB image, 10000 x 8000 pixels in size, 16 bits/channel.  Time how long it takes to File - Save As a .PSD in the location you often save files.  Make sure you're set for Maximum Compatibility for saving PSDs.  This gives your disk subsystem a bit of a workout.
    3. Choose a round brush, set the Hardness to 0% (i.e., as fuzzy as possible), Spacing down to 10%, disable all the dynamics, and set the foreground color to something other than the background color of your image so you can see your strokes.  How do brush strokes on your screen keep up with you interactively under each of the following conditions?  If not, how long does it seem to take to catch up to where you just painted?  Does it follow everywhere you moved your mouse, or at some point start to skip places where your mouse went if you paint quickly?
    3a. Brush Size 100px.
    3b. Brush Size 200px.
    3c. Brush Size 300px.
    3d. Brush Size 400px.
    3e. Brush Size 600px.
    3f. Brush Size 1000px.
3g. How big does the Brush Size have to be at 10% spacing and 0% hardness before it gets too laggy to be practically useful without slowing your strokes down hugely.
    4.  Filter - Blur - Lens Blur.  Change all the controls to 0 then the Radius to 20 pixels and time how long it takes to fill the preview with the image (all checkerboard gone).  You can cancel the Blur filter after the display is filled.  This is a single-threaded plug-in.
    5.  How long does it take to complete an Unsharp Mask on the image you've painted, using a setting of 250% amount, 250.0 pixel radius, 0 levels?  Time how long it takes after hitting the OK button to Photoshop being ready for you to do something else.  This is a multi-threaded plug-in.
You can go ahead and close the above image after the Unsharp Mask operation.
    6. How long does it take to convert a Canon EOS 7D and a Nikon D7000 image with default settings, between hitting the [Open] button in Camera Raw and the image appearing in Photoshop to be ready to edit?  You can find raw files online to try with.  This is where I got the ones I tried:
    http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E7D/E7DFARI00100.CR2.HTM
    http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D7000/D7000FARI00100.NEF.HTM
Please don't be shy about posting your results.
Your computer is what it is and there's NOTHING to be ashamed of.  Some are going to be faster than others at different things, and I think it will be really enlightening to see how the different system architectures handle these operations.  It can be a more or less objective way to see what architectures really do give great Photoshop performance.  Then when people ask "what's the best architecture" to get to run Photoshop, we can respond with more confidence and point them to this thread.
I'll post my own results in a bit.
    Thanks!
    -Noel

Here's my system in a nutshell:
    A.  Dell Precision T5400 PC Workstation running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.  I have two 1600 x 1200 pixel Dell 2001FP display monitors.
    B.  2 Intel Xeon X5460 3.16 GHz processors with 12M cache and 4 cores each (8 cores total in the system).
    C.  16 GB of 1333 MHz DDR2 RAM in 8 x 2 GB DIMMs, which provides quad channel access.
    D.  Drive C: is 2 x 1 TB Western Digital RE4 SATA drives in RAID 0, Drive D: is a Hitachi 1 TB SATA drive.  All are 7200 RPM, and using SATA2 connections.
    E.  Video card is ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 1 GB GDDR5 memory, running the ATI Catalyst 11.12 driver.
    F.  Photoshop 32 bit set to use 100% RAM (3255 MB), OpenGL disabled.  Photoshop 64 bit limited at 95% RAM (13962 MB), OpenGL enabled, Normal mode.
    Here are my test results:
    1.  Photoshop 32 bit took 10 seconds initially to come up, then after closing it it took between 4 and 5 seconds to come up on subsequent cold starts.
Photoshop 64 bit took 6 seconds to come up at first, then after closing it it took about 3 seconds to come up on subsequent cold starts.
    2.  File - Save As - PSD an 80 megapixel 16 bits/channel image took 2 seconds.  File was 468 MB on disk.  Timing was the same in both 32 and 64 bit Photoshop.
    3.  Painting interactivity with various brushes was good up to the larger sizes, where it started to get laggy:
    Photoshop CS5 32 bit:
3a-d: Brush strokes are perfectly Interactive at 100px through 400px with any speed strokes.
3e: Started to notice a slight delay at 600px. Stroke across entire image follows the cursor cleanly, but a small fraction of a second later.
3f. Delay noticeably longer at 1000px, probably 1/3 to 1/2 second. Quick curvy strokes result in loss of some of the positions the mouse traversed, the resultant stroke becoming straight between points.  Still quite usable for painting if the mouse is moved a little bit more slowly.
3g. At 2500px the brush paints in noticeable jumps, a small fraction of a second apart. Somewhat usable but the mouse would have to be moved extremely slowly.  Practically unusable for painting.
Photoshop CS5 64 bit (slightly poorer performance than in 32 bit Photoshop, perhaps because of OpenGL setting difference):
3a-c: Brush strokes perfectly Interactive at 100px through 300px.
3d: Started to notice a slight delay noticed at 400px. Stroke on screen follows the cursor cleanly, but a small fraction of a second later.
3e. Delay noticeably longer at 600px, probably 1/3 to 1/2 second. Quick curvy strokes lose some of the positions the mouse traversed, becoming vectored.  Possibly usable for painting but only if the mouse is moved very slowly.
3f. A quick stroke across the image at 1000px size results in it taking 1 second or more to catch up.  Probably unusable for any kind of painting.
3g. At 2500px the brush paints in noticeable jumps, about 1/4 second apart. Possibly usable for spot retouching but the mouse would have to be just single-clicked.  Completely unusable for painting.
    4.  Lens Blur, with More Accurate setting and 20 px Radius, took the following times to fill the preview display of the filter, and (per Task Manager) appeared to be using only one core:
    32 Bit Photoshop:  2 minutes 5 seconds (125 seconds).
    64 Bit Photoshop:  1 minute 20 seconds (80 seconds).
    5.  Filter - Sharpen - Unsharp Mask, with 250% Amount and 250.0 px Radius took the following times to complete after pressing OK:
    32 Bit Photoshop: 9 seconds.
    64 Bit Photoshop:  12 seconds.
    6.  Opening raw images took the following times:
    32 Bit Photoshop: Canon 7D Image: 3.8 seconds  ;  Nikon D7000 Image: 1.4 seconds
    64 Bit Photoshop: Canon 7D Image: 2.5 seconds  ;  Nikon D7000 Image: 1.5 seconds
Looking forward to seeing your results.

  • Photoshop cs5 64-bit hangs all the time when editing photos on Win 7 64-bit?

Recently installed Master Suite Collection CS5 on Win 7 64-bit.  The computer is a 64-bit i5-480 CPU Lenovo and has an Intel HD GPU.  Photoshop CS5 64-bit hangs constantly when I load a picture for editing and there is no way to get rid of the photoshop process except for a reboot.  Have tried PSkill, and other options and nothing can get rid of it excetp for a re-boot.  This is a major pain because I cannot get any work done.
The Master Suite cost me a fortune and can't get a basic application to work properly
    Help!!!

Let me first start by saying the Intel GPU drivers that implement OpenGL are often faulty.  That's quite possibly the root cause of your problems.
If you reconfigure Photoshop not to try to use the OpenGL subsystem, via Edit - Preference - Performance, and unchecking the [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing checkbox, does it get any better?  Make sure to close and restart Photoshop after making this configuration change.
It is possible Intel has released newer drivers that may have corrected the OpenGL problems.  Check their web site.

  • OpenGL issue when launching Photoshop CS5 Extended from Lightroom?

I noticed about 2 weeks ago that the scrubby zoom and rotate commands stopped working.  Obviously OpenGL was not
enabled and was greyed out, not letting me enable it.  I have a 295GTX video card with dual GPU's and I have updated all drivers NVidia 280.26.  When I went through the Adobe troubleshoot doc I reset my preferences/defaults by holding <CTRL><ALT><SHIFT> when launching Photoshop and it allows me to enable it.  I can even open a bunch of images and everything works but only if I open them FROM within Photoshop.  If I pick an image from Lightroom (Latest Version) and launch it to photoshop it will not allow me to run OpenGL features any longer and the only way I can get it to work again is to reset it doing the <CTRL><ALT><SHIFT> move.
Any suggestions or knowlege of issues / bugs?

As a temporary workaround, you can uninstall the driver and try using an earlier release.  Sometimes they break new things with new releases.

  • Photoshop CS5-64bit support for Epson Perfection V600 Scanner

    Hello -
    In this document -- http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405072.html
It says: "If the manufacturer of your scanner doesn't provide a 64-bit driver, open Photoshop CS5 in 32-bit mode to enable TWAIN scanning functionality with 32-bit drivers."
Epson does provide a 64-bit driver for the V600 scanner. I installed in on my 64-bit version of Windows 7 and I can see it in the printers and scanners devices control panel. However, I don't see the scanned listed under File -> Import within CS5 64 bit.
I was able to install the 32_bit TWAIN driver downloaded from the Epson website in the 32 bit CS5 install location. It works, but I rarely use the 32 bit version. The 64-bit version has worked great for me and my computer has 12 GB of RAM for heavy photoshopping.
Is there a way to get support for the V600 within CS5 16bit?

There is no 64 bit TWAIN program.  So far there are too many technical problems.  If you want to use TWAIN you have to use the 32 bit version.
If you would rather use the 64 bit program do the operation with the scanner and then open the fle in PS.

how corrupted part of PhotoShop? Should I try and reinstall PhotoShop? I have a MacBook Pro 13"; 2011; 4g mem; intel core i5.
    Any suggestions?

You should check with Adobe, but it's likely they'll say that Photoshop CS5 isn't supported on Yosemite and they'll recommend you update to a new CC version, which of course requires a subscription.
It could be that Photoshop requires a Java installation (and probably an old one), that isn't running on Yosemite by default. Java 6 is not "new," it's in fact very old. I do think you can download Java 6 from Apple - check apple.com/support/downloads.

  • Photoshop CS5 crashes when using scripts

I thought this problem was resolved when I installed a Photoshop CS5 patch but now it's back again.
Why does this F***ing program keep crashing when running scripts?  There ought to be a lemon law for software that doesn't work as advertised.
I'm not alone...there are hundreds of complaints about Photoshop crashing.  Adobe - are you listening?

Interesting to note that when a person comes in here with an attitude, using foul language, they don't get much help.  Ray, people likely understand your frustration, but the old "honey/vinegar" adage seems to apply.  Most of us "flies" around here are just users like yourself.  I don't think I'd have replied either but for the word "thanks" at the bottom of your last post.
Look in your Windows System Event Log for information on the failures.  Post the overview information from those failures here and someone may be able to offer some further guidance.  Especially interesting will be the "faulting module" names.
    Some things to check:
What 3rd party plug-ins do you have installed?  Do the problems continue if you remove them?
Have you updated Photoshop to 12.0.3?
Have you updated your video drivers to the latest released by nVidia?
Is Windows up to date?  What version of Windows are you running, by the way?
What are your Edit - Preferences - Performance settings?
Something's very likely wrong with your particular computer / software setup, as most folks don't seem to be seeing the problems you are.

  • Aperture 3.03 and Photoshop CS5

I tried using Photoshop CS5 as my external editor. The resulting PSD file does not display correctly in Aperture but will reopen correctly in Photoshop. What gives?

    Hi Steven
If I am understanding you correctly, you are saying that the picture you have edited in CS (after exporting from Aperture) is ....."automatically"..... saved back into the Aperture Library ?
This is certainly not the case, I'm using CS4 and after exporting to CS4 from within Aperture, any edits you make IN CS4, within CS4, are not included in the version that returns to Aperture if you do not save it IN CS4 first Steven....
After editing in CS4, if you try to close CS4 (cmd & Q) you are asked do you want to save the file before closing, if 'don't save' is selected, the version Aperture created to export to CS4 is saved, but with no edits. If 'save' is selected then all your edits are preserved on the version that returns to Aperture, as a .psd file.
The OP asked...."I tried using Photoshop CS5 as my external editor. The resulting PSD file does not display correctly in Aperture but will reopen correctly in Photoshop. What gives?"
So I wondered two things here,
    1. Has the OP NOT saved the image in CS before returning to Aperture.....(no edits preserved)
    2. Maybe the OP has not checked whether or not to Maximise file Compatibility ( In CS > Preferences > File Handling > Maximise PSD and PSB File Compatibility....) maybe the OP has 'Never' checked here in error......?? Instead of 'Ask' or 'Always'....??
If the OP has not checked '2' above, then the image will open in CS but not Aperture.
""To use an external editor in Aperture
Select an item in the Browser.
Choose Photos > Edit with > [application name] (or press Command-Shift-O).
Aperture creates a new master (leaving the original unchanged), converts it to the chosen file format, and then opens the file in the external editor. The file is tracked as a new master stacked with the original master.
When you’ve finished modifying the image, audio, or video file in the external application, save the file.""
The saved file is automatically updated in Aperture.
    All the best Steven...... Gerry...

  • Can't enable OpenGL (CS4)

I have a 1GB ATI 4870 graphics card.  After Effects will not allow me to enable OpenGL.  I used this card on another machine and recall it working before.  I updated the card driver and still can't enable it.  What do I need to do here?
    Thanks,
    jb

Might be a problem you can't resolve or influence. ATI's drivers don't seem to be so great on Win 7 64bit and AE CS4 having been developed at a time when the card didn't exist and thus could not be tested certainly doesn't help the matter.... You could try an older driver and see if it works, but otehr than that there is no way to enforce OpenGL usage. anyway, don't lose sleep over it, AE will do just fine without it. If at all, AE's use of OpenGL is marginal as are benfits derived from using it. On the contrary, many users will happily go without it to avoid potential graphics related crashes...
