Photoshop CS5, Latest SSD drive and Scratch File

Hi everybody,
I just purchased i7-950 3.06GHZ computer with 12 GB tripple channel memory, and also Just ordered one Crucial RealSSD c300 128GB.
I'm planning to put my OS Win7Ultimate 64bit on it and Photoshop. Do you think I would benefite in any way from a second 64GB SSD dedicated to the Scratch drive?
I'm planning to hook my SSD to a SATAIII connector on my mobo.
Thank you for your input and time.
Serge

You will DEFINITELY benefit from having a second hard drive dedicated to use with Photoshop.  Whether it has to be an SSD is up to you.
I can tell you this, however:  When working with image documents large enough that you exceed your 12 GB of main memory, Photoshop's scratch files are often seen to grow to hundreds of GB in size.  Yes, you read that correctly.  So your 64 GB SSD driver will likely not be large enough.
I think your best bet is to use the money to get more RAM (people sometimes take Photoshop-oriented systems to 24 GB), then use a large, inexpensive hard drive for Photoshop scratch.

  • Hardware: SSD drives and scratch disks

    Hi,
I am building a new system for Photoshop. Two quick questions:
    1. I note in Adobe's system reqs it says Photoshop cannot be installed on flash-based storage devices. Does this include SSDs? Is there a genuine problem here (i.e. if my application drive is an SSD the PS won't work)?
    2. I have not previously had a so-called "scratch" disk so I don't really know what it is or whether I need one, or more than one. What's the general advice here? - separate drive to the PS application drive? also separate to the Windows drive? How big? Will an SSD be a good choice for a scratch drive?
    Thanks in advance,
    Alastair

    G'day,
In answer to your query SSDs work fine to install cs4 on bar the following I'm having.
I've built a new system using ssds.and is working fine bar one problem
    Specs of the system is
I7 920 cpu, Asus P6t se mb, 12gb ram, 128gb ssd, 64gb ssd, 4gb raid 1+0 array onboard, nvidia geforcegtx260. I use the 128gb ssd as the os and programs drive. The raid is the data drive. All works brilliantly except when I set the 64gb ssd as the scratch disk the following happens
"Could not open a scratch file because the file is locked.  Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file."
I hit OK and get this error -
"Could not initialize Photoshop because the file is locked. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file."
Pressing ok then shuts the program and I need to reset cs4 prefernces and then it all works fine. OS is Win7 64 bit.
Now I have just got to try and fix this problem Anyone got suggestions?
    Cheers
    Onslow
Hmm, seems to have stopped doing this now after resetting the scratch to the ssd and then rebooting. All is now fine and wonderfully quick.

  • Cannot Launch Photoshop CS5 - "Could not Open a Scratch File..."

Hi, so photoshop CS5 is not launching.
Just got it in the mail, installed it, and now I'm getting this message:
"Could not open a scratch file because the file is locked or you do not have the necessary privileges.
Use the get info command in finder to unlock the file."
I've tried multiple things to try to resolve the issue including:
    1) reinstalled 3 times
    2) pulled all plists regarding adobe found at ~/library/preferences/
    3) tried booting to safe mode, no difference
    4) checked software updates for anything adobe, everything installed now.
    5) note, this is also happening in photoshop cs2 now
    6) tried changing permissions to enclosed items to the photoshop CS5 folder read/write access.
    I've got a 21.5 iMac with Mac OS X 10.6.4 installed.
What other suggestions does anyone else have??
I have called adobe, talked to 3 different people, and talked to Applecare, each support rep
has told me to contact the other. I do not know what to do at this point.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've got the same [edited by host] problem...
I've gone to the Windows Explorer Folders and the Files and DISABLED THE "READ ONLY" CHECK BOX ON EVERY LAST FILE & FOLDER REALTED TO IMAGES I'M ATTEMPTING TO EDIT...
BUT THEN IT RESETS THEM BACK TO BEING "READ ONLY" SEVERAL SECONDS LATER.
i'M THE ADMINISTRATOR ON THIS SYSTEM, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT...

ALSO THEIR HELP SECTION is poor [edited by host] TOO...

  • I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home

I'd like to carry my system, applications and files on a portable Thunderbolt ssd drive and boot from it.  I have a Mac Pro in the office, iMac at home, a MacBook Air for when I'm on the road, all with TB.  Can a single external TB drive boot all three hardware configurations successfully?  I've been told that differences in hardware configurations between the systems make this impossible.  Is this correct?

Piece or peace of cake really though.
A quick install on new hard drive or SSD or 10K and less than an hour to move everything over properly.
YOU looked for a quick fix and found none and all the brick walls.
It is not  days of work to do a clean install and migrate.
There are few if any apps that need to be freshly installed either though there are updates needed for them to be compliant, any driver or plugin also and that is done ahead of time with research.
And your backup or clone of your system is taken care of - you leave the old system boot drive 'as is' untouched.
Also, better strategy to move most all your home folder (except for its own ~/Library) to ANOTHER disk drive and not on t he system drive at all.
As for applications on its own drive or 3rd party, beeen there done that, even SSD or 15K SCSI - no benefit in performance or organization.

When you restore from a Time Machine back up you can pick and chose what is restored. It is not an all or nothing process. Nor do you have to do the partial restores all at the same time. If days after the first partial restore you find something else you want you can restore just that.

  • I have Photoshop CS5.5 Design Premium and need to open Nikon NEF files

I have Photoshop CS5.5 Design Premium and need to open Nikon NEF files.
I just downloaded the plug in for CS5.5 and it does not work. I put the Camera Raw.8bi file in the correct location as specifiec in the "read me" file.
Can someone guide me on how to do this, adn make it work?
    Thank you.
    Jay

    so far no luck.
I ran DNG program for Windows (I have Win 8) and ran the menu to convert
the files on the same memory card from the camera.   Of 135 files, the
status column for the first 68 files said "converted," but the for all the
rest, it says "There was an error writing the file."
Of the files that "converted," they do not open, and I get the same error
message as before: "Could not complete your request because it is not the
    right kind of document."
    So, what a mess.
I get conflicting indications of the version of Photoshop I have. When i
click "About Photoshop in the Help menu, it says CS5 Extended.    The Error
message for the dng files says CS5.1 Extended.  Does it make a difference?
I've been at this three hours now.  It's a pain.   For many years I had no
problem with NEF files, as I had installed the plug-in as required. This
time it is not working. So I am not new to this.

  • Cannot Run Photoshop CS5 on SSD

    MAC PRO Spec:
MAC PRO 6 cores Intel Xeon "Westmere"
RAM=16GB by Kingston (apple certified RAM module = KTA-MP1333/4G)
HDD=Western Digital black label 1TB (original shipped by Apple)
    SSD=Kingston Hyper X 240G
    OS= MAC OS X Lion
Adobe product = CS5.5 design standard traditional chinese version
    Problem description:
I've tried either Apple or Adobe tech support for resolving my problem. Unfortunately, I still cannot resolve my issues. Look for anyone could help me out to solve my problem. Currently,I am not able to start photoshop on my SSD drive while HDD is my secondary drive. Anyone know the issue and how to resolve the problem.
Let me describe how I set up my Mac Pro and how the problem happen.
While I got my Mac Pro (only have one HDD), I install my CS5.5 and run photoshop. Everything just works fine. While I got my SSD, I make the SSD becomes a boot drive on the Mac PRO (the HDD was set to become a data drive now. Everything installed in the HDD was still there, and I don't remove any of CS5.5 application which was installed earlier). Then I start to install CS5.5 on SSD. The first time is ok to run photoshop. After open and close photoshop a few times, I start to run photoshop again. Then the error message occurred and the photoshop cannot run at all. The error message said "The photoshop cannot start because cannot find the temporary stored files. "
Following is my testing and result
    1. I've tried to let either SSD or HDD as a single drive to start photoshop....No problem.
    2. HDD as a main drive and SSD as a data drive..... No problem to start photoshop from HDD
    3. SSD as a main drive and HDD as a data drive..... Error mesage and photoshop cannot run

  • Photoshop CS5 has stopped working and shuts down

I purchased Photoshop CS5 in March 2011 and after trying to install software I was unable to do anything in Photoshop without getting the following error message:  "Adobe Photoshop CS5 has stopped working".  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.  I was unable to open any psd file or new file withouth that error message.  After you close that error message window, Photoshop immediately closes down. I had someone from Adobe remotely fix this problem.  Now it is appearing again and I am unable to use the program.  I need help with this.  Please.

Attempting to upgarde itunes and I get an error message looking for "an alternate path to a folder containing 'iTunes.msi' location.  I've searched my hard drive and the file doesn't exist.  What to do?

This worked...found on a prior discussion:
Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page)...
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
From the link above (near the top of the page)....Under 'download locations'   click on 'download@majorgeeks'
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you just downloaded and ran.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    Restart your computer.
Re-download Itunes (latest version form Itunes website) and install.  It worked!

  • Photoshop CS5 Crashes when converting large RGB files to CMYK?

    Hi,
I am having problems with my Photoshop CS5.  When I open large file and go to convert them from RGB to CMYK and visa versa it crashes!
    Can anyone help?

Have you installed all the OS and Photoshop updates?
    If not, do that now.
Then we'd need to see the crash report (because I haven't seen any crashes in color conversion).

  • Photoshop CS5.1 won't read raw files from Canon EOS M

Photoshop cs5.1 won't read raw files from canon eosM, what to do?

The EOS M requires at least Camera Raw 7.2 but Raw 7.2 is only compatible with CS6 or higher (CS5 is only compatible up to Raw 6.7)
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
To open and edit Raw files, either upgrade to CS6 or join the Cloud and get the CC version.
Alternatively convert the Raw files from the EOS M to DNGs using the free DNG converter then edit the DNGs in CS5.1

    Hi Kenton,
Adding to what James mentioned, this stands true for both Lightroom and Photoshop. In other words, you don't need to necessarily install the previous versions but while installing the latest versions, in this case Lightroom 5 & PS CS6, you will need the serial keys for previous versions as well along with the current ones.

  • Mac Pro SSD drive and libraries

I just got a base level mac pro. When I run compressor, it fills up the library in the ssd drive and crashes the machine when it runs out of disk space. Is there a solution for this?
    Thanks
    Russ

It happens with every job I tested. I use Compressor in  a three mac cluster. Compressor uses" /library/Application Support/Compressor/Storage "  on the local hard drive to cache the videos you are compressing. This limits the output file size to size of the main ssd drive. I only let it crash ones, because I had to go in and manually delete the cache files and free up my drive. I got worried it might shut down enough of the operating system when I could not clean the files out and lock my machine up due to no disk space.
The Mac Pro is a new system for me and I am trying to understand the limitations. I like the external drive concept, but my local ssd hard drive now become like memory, and "memory leaks" on a hard drive operating system  are difficult to trace.

  • Any need for inactive memory with latest SSD drives?

I have an iMac with a combo drive with 24 gb of RAM. At times my inactive memory exceeds 10 gb and my available memory goes to zero. And Mavericks is slow to give the memory back.  Given the efficiency and speed of the latest SSD drives, does earmaking memory to an inactive state serve any useful purpose when using a SSD drive?.

I believe there is, as RAM speed is still much better than SSD speed. Most inactive RAM queries stem from the fact that "inactive RAM" is a misnomer. For a pretty full explanation, have a look at my second-last reply at the bottom of page 3 of this discussion:
