Photoshop CS5 launches Help without asking
Ocassionally PhotoShop will launch the Help applet without being asked.
It generally seems to happen while playing with settings in the Blending Options / Layer Styles window, though I've had it happen very rarely when doing other things too.
I can confirm that this bug goes right back to at least version 7 -- I've been experiencing it for years in various versions, and it was there in CS1 and CS2 (my last upgrade before CS5). I was pretty sure it would be fixed by now, but nope, it's still there in CS5 too.
It seems more likely to happen when I've been working in PhotoShop for a long session and resources are low.
I'm using PhotoShop CS5 Extended x64 on Windows 7 x64.
Any solutions?
Hi again. I played around with changing my scratch disks and allocating more memory to PhotoShop, but this problem never went away: Help still launches itself randomly. (And my other reported problem about keyboard focus being didn't improve either.)
Is it worth reporting these as bugs? I reported some other stuff as bugs, but didn't hear anything back, not even a confirmation that they had been received.

Invoking Photoshop CS5 from Lightroom 4 asks for Camera Raw Plug-in 7.0
I have just downloaded and installed Adobe Lightroom 4.0. When I try to invoke "Photo / Edit in Photoshop CS 5.1" I get the warning "This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 7.0 for full compatibility. Please update the camera raw plug-in using the update tool available in the Photoshop help menu". However, the update function in Photoshop CS5.1 says that there are no updates available and searching adobe.com I can find no references to Camera Raw plug-in 7.0. What is one to do? Thanks.
No, the warning is not the issue. As I've said, "supported cameras" are not the problem.
I do initial processing on my images, then using Lightroom CMD E push them to Photoshop for further editing. The message says "7.0 may be required for full compatibility" should I ignore that warning and click "Open Anyway" because there really aren't any compatibility issues?
LR 4 Develop module is much different than LR 3, just as CS5 version of ACR is different than what I've seen in the CS6 beta. My assumption is there would be compatibility issues - as the warning says - when using LR4's develop engine then passing it on to CS5. I don't use ACR in Photoshop since I use Lightroom, I use Photoshop for detailed image editing in conjunction with the Nik Software selective tool run as a window within Photoshop.
So how about a clear answer: Just click "Open Anyway" and everything will work great? When I first work on an image in LR4, then further edit it in Photoshop CS5 with ACR 6.7 installed, Save and Close the image in Photoshop sending it back to Lightroom it will all work just like yesterday when I did all that in Lightroom 3 without any error messages? -

I have run CS5cleanscript and uninstalled previous versions of photoshop.
I am administrator and have enough space on my hardrive.

Cannot Install Photoshop CS5 [Please Help] :(
I have tried multiple times to install Photoshop CS5; it never works. I have tried using different Internet browsers, with and without the Akamai download application, and by clicking 'Run As Administrator'.
The first time I tried to install Photoshop CS5, I used the Akamai downloader. Because the Akamai application is a writhing piece of garbage, I, of course, came out with an error. I then decided to download the files directly, without the Akamai downloader.
After downloading the files directly, I was certain I would not have any issues. Wrong. Windows found a way to piss me off and gave me an error while extracting the files using PowerArchiver. The error stated that the following:
"Error writing to a file.
"Possible reasons: Disk full or no write permissions.
"Please check if you have permissions to write to this folder.
"Vista users:
"In Microsoft Vista, writing to certain folders is not allowed (i.e. C:\Program Files). You will need to start PowerArchiver as Administrator. If you are extracting files you can use drag and drop from PowerArchiver main interface to extract files to that error.
"Error: 0."
I have checked my hard drive space - I have enough space. I checked the write permissions of the folder I was extracting to - I am permitted to extract the files to that folder. I have tried 'Run As Administrator' in PowerArchiver, and still no success.
Could someone please assist me because I want to use try out Photoshop CS5 until it expires, and I can't do so if Windows wants to screw me over all the time.

My computer can handle Photoshop CS5 (I checked)
I have tried using Firefox and Google Chrome
I have tried using the Akamai downloader and not using the Akamai downloader

Thanks in advance I apologize for my sour attitude. I am just really fristrated at the moment.I feel your frustration, but take heart, Windows 7 is not trash. You just need to become its master, and doing so requires different machinations and skills than with past versions.
Let me also say that the greener grass on the Mac side is spray paint. Trust me, I am involved with both. Windows is more powerful - once you master it.
First, if you're having problems you perceive as the system blocking you from getting what you want done, may I suggest that you may be a candidate for disabling User Account Control. This is not a decision to be taken lightly - you should fully understand what UAC does for you and why you might want to disable it.
In a nutshell, UAC makes everything you do, even though you may be logged-in with an account that's in the Administrators group, operate as though you are a lowly non-privileged user, and attempts to prompt you with an annoying dialog every time you try to do something that requires Administrator privileges. I say "attempts" because it doesn't always happen when it needs to.

If you become convinced you'd rather be an Administrator all the time, and are willing to take the risk that software you run from now on will be able to make arbitrary changes to your computer that require Administrator privileges, you can disable UAC; it's really quite simple to do.
To do so, click Start and type UAC into the search box. When Change User Account Control Settings comes up, click it. Drag the slider to the bottom, confirm the dialog, then reboot your system.
If you had any problems because of UAC, this will work around them.
ALL THAT SAID...
I suspect your problems run deeper than just UAC, and possibly disabling UAC won't help you with this specific problem. You may have permissions issues...
Did you upgrade your operating system from an earlier version?
Was the disk originally formatted or the data put on the disk by another computer?

Macbook Pro for PhotoShop CS5.. help configuring.
Hi, I am purchasing a 15" Macbook Pro for my first year of University and would like some advice configuring it (without going overboard price-wise.) The catch is I would also like to use Photoshop CS5 on it, and have it run good and fast. My current desktop is slow as mollases and would like to kill two birds with one stone and get a good laptop for school and Photo applications.
So, here's my options.
1)2.53 GHz i5, 8GB ram, 500GB HD 7200 rpm, NVIDIA 256mb graphics card. (so basically "lesser processor and graphics card, but better RAM)

So as you can see, it is Processor/graphics VS ram. I know option 1 is still a little more $, but I'm not that concerned. Just want to get a machine that will run Photoshop CS5 smoothly and fast (maybe some video editing in the future, but not huge deal on video). As you can probably tell, I'm new to high end laptops like this, just want to get it right the first time.
Also, dont be afraid to tell me if I will truly benefit LOADS MORE from the i7, nvidia 512gb graphics, and 8GB ram. I would like to not spend this much if possible, but I would like to know if it is also worth considering anyway.

MattAs far as I know there's about 7% difference between an i5 and an i7 processor, not a huge amount.
RAM and a fast drive are going to impact that type of work more and so I'd say put the bigger RAM first on your list (so if a choice of (1) or (2) I'm saying (1))

Purchasing and downloading photoshop cs5 education help.
I am looking to purchase and download photoshop cs5 education version direct from adobe australia. However i would like to know if once i have downloaded whether i am able to install it on both my computers imac and macbook pro? Or am i limited to the activation code only working once?

Text tool in Photoshop CS5? Help!
Whenever I try to use the "Text" tool in Photoshop CS5 it freezes on my Mac laptop and I have to force quit losing all of my work if I haven't saved. Help please?!

There's some confusion on your part. Apple's Font Book is just a standard, integral part of the OS, and it gets installed with every installation of the OS.
There's a different application called FontBook (no space) by Lemke software that would not interfere with anything.

I have Photoshop cs5 installed on my Desktop and old Laptop. I recently upgraded my laptop and no longer have the install disc.. How can I get the program onto my New Laptop?

Photoshop CS5 opens but without the chosen picture
After choosing a picture (jpg) in Bridge CS5 to be opened in Photoshop CS5 Photoshop is being started but keeps empty. The picture isn't opened. If I choose 5 pictures there will be opened 5 empty instances of Photoshop but no picture will be opened. I notice this behaviour since having updated to Raw 6.4.

i just tried to see a rule in what Photoshop does, but it is not always the same that happens.
First I marked 5 jpgs in Explorer an tried to open with rightclicking an choosing "open". --> Photoshop was opened and all pictures were shown. I closed Photoshop.
Second I opened Bridge and marked five jpgs and tried to open them with rightclicking and choosing open with Photoshop. --> Photoshop opened but without any picture. Photoshop keeps open...
Third I tried to open one single picture via dubbleclick in explorer.--> another Photoshop opened but without the picture.
Fourth I tried to open two PSD-files via marking and rightclicking and choosing "open". --> two other instances of Photoshop opened without pictures.
At last I tried to open 5 jpgs via marking and rightclicking and choosing "open" (in Explorer). --> five other instances of Photoshop opened without pictures.
so this looks strange:
what I'm wondering about:
normally if Photoshop is already opened, every additionally clicked picture will be opened in this one Photoshop-instance.
Why does Photoshop open without opening the picture?
It drives me crazy because I have to edit a lot of pictures during the day and the usual workflow doesn't work...

Hey, I tried figuring this out myself but to no avail. so I am asking anyone here for some advice.
I am trying to make a "lightsaber" effect on some images. In an earlier version of photoshop (earlier than the CS versions i think) it ended up as the blade with its color on a black background. This image was placed on top of my image, the blending mode changed to screen, and it turned out fine. The black disappeared, and the blade kept its vibrant color.

I've tried this in cs3 and cs5, but something in the program must have changed. When I set the "blades" image to screen, the blade color ends up blending into the background color (altering the blades color) and ends up completely disappearing against a white background. The blade color alters based on what color the image behind it is. I want the blades to keep their vibrant color regardless of what background it is against. Any advice?

Of course they will disappear against a white background.
The Blending Mode Screen can only produce lighter values (you can figure out the math yourself or check out the Help, »Blending mode descriptions«) so on white it will result in white.
Anyway, I guess the intended effect may possibly be approximated with Blend Mode Normal.
In the case of your example a Selection based on Green used to make a Green (0/255/0) Solid Color Layer, a Selection based on either Red or Blue as the basis of a white Solid Color Layer could be used.
On Black the results are identical, on lighter backgrounds the result will differ increasingly, but one can still control the aura via Opacity. -

I've always wondered myself what OS requirements are not being met as indicated by these kinds of messages.

I'm currently working on a banner design in which certain animation components need only to loop one time while other components need to loop forever. Is there a way that I can choose specific layers to loop once and choose others to loop forever within the same animation scheme?
Of course GIF can save animations with multiple Frames which are represented by multiple layers in the document. I don't think PNG can do animation at all, however.
Have you tried altering the amount of RAM you have allocated to Photoshop in the Edit - Preferences - Performance menu?

Frame7.1 wont import Photoshop CS5.1 .jpg file
I am (reluctantly) in the process of migrating from Windows XP +
Photoshop CS V8.0 to Windows 7/64bit + Photoshop CS5.1.
Framemaker 7.1 works well in both XP and W7/64, including generating
PDFs. I can import .jpg files written by Photoshop CS. Etc.
... except...
If I open a known-good (already imported) .jpg file using Photoshop
CS5.1 and, without making any changes, save it, Framemaker can no
longer import it, neither directly or by reference:
"The filter encountered an error and could not complete the
translation".
It appears the Photoshop CS5.1 writes a different .jpg file format
than Photoshop CS (rhetorical: how can it be acceptable for CS5.1 to
change the format of a basic .jpg file? but I digress...).
Examining the original .jpg file vs. the CS5 .jpg file I find:
- The new file is smaller (79KB vs. 82KB) - note both are small!
- The contents (examined using a binary editor) are quite different.
- Both versions display identically, in both CS and CS5.1 and in
various viewers.
I have tried various experiments trying to understand this and have
had no luck. I can open the CS5 .jpg file in Photoshop CS and save it
again but Framemaker will not open this version either, same error.
This is not a RAM size issue (8GB), swap space issue, or anything else
related to the computer hardware. All SW updates are current, etc.
I have tried importing into a new, default template file, etc.
So, I tried saving as .bmp and the first time I tried to import it
Framemaker died immediately: no stack trace, no error messages, the
Frame process was just gone. After restarting, the 2nd attempt I got a
black rectangle of the correct size, but all black = not usable.
Photoshop CS + Framemaker has worked well for many years, so I know
this is a CS5 issue.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make CS5.1 generate a "standard" .jpg
file?

Please don't advocate upgrading Framemaker to V10... Adobe provides zero
information on migration (from any version) and the last time we did
this cost us many man-months of work to "fix" 14K+ pages in 50+
manuals. We will stay with XP/CS and "eat" the new W7/CS5 system
before we move to FM10.

Framemaker 7.1P116, non-structuredAG: IIRC, the FM7.1 JPG filter only reads the older JFIF header format JPG files, while the CS5 Photoshop and many other applications write EXIF headers in the JPG (yes , the standard evolved).
We also had a problem with JPEG 5 (legacy) vs. JPEG 2000 (newer) encoding, not in FM, but in the rendered PDFs at our print shop. The Xerox engine needed an update to fix that.
Using JPEGs in FM has various considerations, some already mentioned in this thread. But the biggest concern, in my view, is cascading compression damage. JPEG compression is always "lossy", and the artifacts at higher compression, or after successive compressions, are often visually distracting (and may be aggravated if sharpening is also applied). Even at NO compression, there are losses due to the transforms
Unless you are shooting .RAW, your camera is compressing from frame buffer to JPEG. When you re-save from your photo editor, regardless of edits, it gets re-compressed if saved to JPEG. When you render to PDF, it may get both down-samped and re-compressed again depending on PDF settings. If you post-process (optimize or reduce file size) in Acrobat, it can get down-sampled and re-compressed again.
So I shoot JPEG with as little compression as possible (RAW has other considerations). I edit in PhotoShop and save as EPS, which is a very inefficient format space-wise, but is UNcompressed*, and is a very efficient format both performance- and stability-wise in FM. I save the EPS at the resolution desired in the PDF (usually 200 dpi). Yes, it does get (and needs to be) re-compressed during Distill, but we've skipped one needless re-comp, and avoided another down-sample. We don't further optimize in Acrobat post because the images are already optimal.
EPS also supports both RGB and CMYK models, whereas JPEG is strictly RGB (or, beware: indexed color). And EPS is generally unmolested by Mr.Bill's GDI, which is crucial for color-managed CMYK.
* TIFF can also be uncompressed, and CMYK, but can be a performance issue in FM.
