Photoshop Cs5, opengl, large files, performance issues.

Hello
I have fresh win7 64-bit install.
Also I have fully upgraded system, new cool whql drivers and my old file form Cs4.
Specs:
Intel D5400xs board
Dual quad xeons
8Gig ram
Nvidia 9800GT 512 Card (Maybe it's not a quadro or other fancy sh*, but like I saw earlier on forums, users have same problems with high-end cards like I with cheap chip)
Dedicated diskn'n'channel for scratch disk.
Wacom intuos 3
Clean system with no other software.
Fully supported opengl - ps says.
No artifacts.
And the problem is:
I have a file created in Cs4 [~300 small simple layers (website), ~50 smart-objects, and 9000x3000px72ppi]
Time to open file 30-40sec. Interaction with this file is very very slow.
Zooming hang-up ps for a 5-10sec.
Wich settings should I use for speed up Cs5?
Cs4 works much faster. I made that file in CS4 with no problems.
Grtz.

Ok, maybe I'm not a specialist, but I found the answer in my case.
Memory usage
Let photoshop Use:  70% (~5000MB)
Hisotry&Cache
History states:  69
Cache levels:  8
Cache tile size: 132K instead of 1024K (Here is turbo option ; )
GPU Settings
Advanced with vertical sync and anti-alias Guides and Path
Now ->  Opening file 10s, no hang-up's, fast zooming and moving - really fast.
So if U have file like me, use settings described above.
If anybod has more info about performance please write about it.
Grtz

  • Any experience with 11.6 4GB, 1.6GHz + Photoshop CS5 and large files?

I've been debating the 11.6" 1.6GHz / 4GB model since the announcement. I have yet to have had a chance to play with one that had Photoshop CS5 installed. Anyone have experience opening PSD files in excess of 40MB?
I'm debating adding the little Air to my collection which already includes a i7 MBP with 8GB of RAM. I'm really just interested in whether or not I can use the Air for down time work while traveling.

Did you ever get an answer to this or take the plunge? I'm curious what you found out...

  • Are the brushes in Photoshop CC faster than CS6 - still need to use CS5 for large files

    Hey,
Are the brushes in Photoshop CC any faster than Photoshop CS6.
Here's my standard large file, which makes the CS6 brushes crawl:
    iPad 3 size - 2048 x 1536
    About 20-100 layers
A combination of vector and bitmap layers
Many of the layers use layer styles
On a file like this there is a hesitation to every brush stroke in CS6. Even a basic round brush has the same hesitation, it doesn't have to be a brush as elaborate as a mixer brush.
This hesitation happens on both the mac and pc, on systems with 16 gb of ram. Many of my coworkers have the same issue.
So, for a complicated file, such as a map with many parts, I ask my coworkers to please work in CS5. If they work in CS6 I ask them to not use any CS6 only features, such as group layer styles. The only reason why one of them might want to use CS6 is because they're working on only a small portion of the map, such as a building. The rest of the layers are flattened in their file.
Just wondering if there has ever been a resolution to this problem...or this is just the way it is.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Photoshop Cs5 not opening files

I'm not actually completely sure if this is an issue with Mavericks because the problem started about 2 1/2 weeks ago, but my Photoshop Cs5 won't open files anymore. As soon as the app launches, I can click on "open..." but as I'm selecting the file, the window will close and after that, every choice on all the drop-down menus is grayed out and can no longer be selected. I've already installed Java for OS X 2012-006 with no luck, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS Cs5 with no luck. Help pleaseeeeeee D:

    Reset your Photoshop preferences: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776
Uninstalling and reinstalling WON'T do that unless you used the CS Cleaner from Adobe to uninstall.
    Also, check your Performance preferences:
Toggle OpenGL drawing, quitting Photoshop between changes.

  • Frame7.1 wont import Photoshop CS5.1 .jpg file

I am (reluctantly) in the process of migrating from Windows XP +
    Photoshop CS V8.0 to Windows 7/64bit + Photoshop CS5.1.
Framemaker 7.1 works well in both XP and W7/64, including generating
PDFs. I can import .jpg files written by Photoshop CS. Etc.
    ... except...
If I open a known-good (already imported) .jpg file using Photoshop
CS5.1 and, without making any changes, save it, Framemaker can no
longer import it, neither directly or by reference:
"The filter encountered an error and could not complete the
        translation".
It appears the Photoshop CS5.1 writes a different .jpg file format
than Photoshop CS (rhetorical: how can it be acceptable for CS5.1 to
change the format of a basic .jpg file? but I digress...).
Examining the original .jpg file vs. the CS5 .jpg file I find:
    - The new file is smaller (79KB vs. 82KB) - note both are small!
    - The contents (examined using a binary editor) are quite different.
    - Both versions display identically, in both CS and CS5.1 and in
       various viewers.
I have tried various experiments trying to understand this and have
had no luck. I can open the CS5 .jpg file in Photoshop CS and save it
again but Framemaker will not open this version either, same error.
This is not a RAM size issue (8GB), swap space issue, or anything else
related to the computer hardware. All SW updates are current, etc.
I have tried importing into a new, default template file, etc.
So, I tried saving as .bmp and the first time I tried to import it
Framemaker died immediately: no stack trace, no error messages, the
Frame process was just gone. After restarting, the 2nd attempt I got a
black rectangle of the correct size, but all black = not usable.
Photoshop CS + Framemaker has worked well for many years, so I know
    this is a CS5 issue.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make CS5.1 generate a "standard" .jpg
    file?
Anyone have any ideas on how to import CS5.1 images using
    Framemaker 7.1?
Please don't advocate upgrading Framemaker to V10... Adobe provides zero
information on migration (from any version) and the last time we did
this cost us many man-months of work to "fix" 14K+ pages in 50+
manuals. We will stay with XP/CS and "eat" the new W7/CS5 system
    before we move to FM10.
    Thanks
    Previously (everything works)
      Windows XP/SP3
      Photoshop CS V8.0
      Framemaker 7.1P116, non-structured
    Today:
      Windows 7/64bit SP1
      Photoshop CS5.1
      Framemaker 7.1P116, non-structured

AG: IIRC, the FM7.1 JPG filter only reads the older JFIF header format JPG files, while the CS5 Photoshop and many other applications write EXIF headers in the JPG (yes , the standard evolved).
We also had a problem with JPEG 5 (legacy) vs. JPEG 2000 (newer) encoding, not in FM, but in the rendered PDFs at our print shop. The Xerox engine needed an update to fix that.
Using JPEGs in FM has various considerations, some already mentioned in this thread. But the biggest concern, in my view, is cascading compression damage. JPEG compression is always "lossy", and the artifacts at higher compression, or after successive compressions, are often visually distracting (and may be aggravated if sharpening is also applied). Even at NO compression, there are losses due to the transforms
Unless you are shooting .RAW, your camera is compressing from frame buffer to JPEG. When you re-save from your photo editor, regardless of edits, it gets re-compressed if saved to JPEG. When you render to PDF, it may get both down-samped and re-compressed again depending on PDF settings. If you post-process (optimize or reduce file size) in Acrobat, it can get down-sampled and re-compressed again.
So I shoot JPEG with as little compression as possible (RAW has other considerations). I edit in PhotoShop and save as EPS, which is a very inefficient format space-wise, but is UNcompressed*, and is a very efficient format both performance- and stability-wise in FM. I save the EPS at the resolution desired in the PDF (usually 200 dpi). Yes, it does get (and needs to be) re-compressed during Distill, but we've skipped one needless re-comp, and avoided another down-sample. We don't further optimize in Acrobat post because the images are already optimal.
EPS also supports both RGB and CMYK models, whereas JPEG is strictly RGB (or, beware: indexed color). And EPS is generally unmolested by Mr.Bill's GDI, which is crucial for color-managed CMYK.
    * TIFF can also be uncompressed, and CMYK, but can be a performance issue in FM.
The Wiki page for JPEG, btw, is presently vandalized:
"The name "JPEG" stands for Joint Photosaic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the JPEG standard and also other standards. It was discovered by <likely name of vandal redacted> of the Philippines."

  • After Effects CS5.5 - Very Serious Performance Issues w/RAM Preview

My system: Windows 7 Professional, two Intel Xeon X5650's, 12GB RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800.
Problem: RAM Preview in CS5.5 gives me less than 2 fps (yes---two frames per second). This is even with the most simple of compositions. I created a 1080p 23.976 project with two simple solid layers and keyframed position and scale values for one of them with no other effects on either solid. RAM Preview gives me 1.8 fps.
I still have AE CS5 installed and it gives me solid, predictable results with RAM Preview. When I create a similar test project inside CS5, it creates the RAM preview almost instantly and displays in proper realtime (23.976 fps).
My settings for both CS5 and CS5.5 are similar  (and I have tried many variations in my attempt to fix this problem).
    PREVIEWS
Fast Previews: Adaptive Resolution Limit 1/4
Enabled OpenGL and both sub-options for OpenGL enabled.
    MEMORY & MULTIPROCESSING
RAM reserved for other apps: 4GB
I have tried various settings for Multiprocessing, all of which results in the same less-than-2 fps RAM Previews. Currently I have MP'ing enabled with 1.5GB allocation per background CPU and the actual CPU's used is 4. Again, no matter what I set it to, I get the same performance issue.
On my screen magnification ratio setting, I am using 25% and my Resolution/Down Sample is set to quarter. On my preview tab, I have tried setting my resolution from the default of "Auto" to "Quarter" with no difference.
In summary: On the same machine, AE CS5.5 RAM Preview offers terrible performance; CS5 RAM Preview offers great performance.

Under AJA Preview there are check boxes, one for "Video" and the other for "Preview." I've checked and unchecked them both and I'm still getting poor RAM previews. No matter what I have toggled, I seem to get between 1 and 2 fps for my RAM Previews.
I am not currently using the AJA card for anything. I will consider uninstalling it if this might possibly solve my problem. It's just a hassle to install and uninstall cards on a per need basis.
If there are any other thoughts, I'd love to hear them. At this point, I'd do just about anything to have realtime previews back.
The machine I'm using, by the way, is an HP z800 with Windows 7 Professional, two Intel Xeon X5650's, 12GB RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800. It has the following installed: CS5.5 Production Premium, AVID Media Composer 5.5.2, and AVID DS 10.5.1 (among other programs).

  • [Photoshop CS5] Optimize to File Size working not correctly.

    ******BUG******
Concise problem statement: Optimize to File Size working not correctly.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. Open any photo.
    2. Draw a slice
    3. Save For Web, choose Optimize to File Size, type 10KB (Current Slice).
    4. Save "selected slices" only
Results: File result larger than expect (over 10KB)
    Expected results: <=10KB filesize.
I uninstalled whole Adobe CS5 Master Collection (Trial) & tried to reproduce the bug in Photoshop CS4, but it was not happened, it's ok on CS4.
Finally, Windows 7 is not reason, it's a bug of Photoshop CS5. Please fix, I don't want to buy a bugged software.
I really need the feature "Optimize to File Size" in my works.
P.S: I tested on 4 PCs, and the results is the same.

  • Photoshop CS5 OpenGL support with latest Intel integrated graphics?

Intel's latest "Sandy Bridge" CPUs (Core i5 2500, Core i7 2600, etc.) included much-improved integrated GPUs, thus allowing for systems that do not require a discrete graphics card.  Although not suitable for high-end gaming, the specs appear to be more than enough for Photoshop CS5's GPU acceleration needs.  Can anyone confirm or deny that CS5 will be able to take advantage of the new Intel HD 2000 and HD 3000 graphics?  The driver specs say it supports OpenGL 3.0 and Shader Model 4.0, both of which satisfy the minimum requirements of OpenGL 2.1 and Shader Model 3.0 for Photoshop CS5.
I'm 99% sure the latest hardware is supported, as Adobe's own document mentions "Intel HD Graphics", just not the specific model numbers.  The document was also last updated in November 2010, before the current series of CPUs were released to the public.

Having implemented my own OpenGL applications over the past several years, I can tell you that it's absolutely not that simple.  The word "surely" cannot be applied here.
Photoshop, in displaying 2D things with a 3D system, is NO DOUBT using OpenGL differently than any other application has ever used OpenGL.  It's the nature of the beast.  What they put in which type of buffers at what time in which mode using what calls in which order and using what performance features are all open choices.  The software itself makes choices at run time about what parts to use based on OpenGL version and advertised capabilities.  Plus they're using Shaders (on-GPU programming), and there are a bunch of different ways to get that done as well.
In order for a system to run perfectly, the applications and video driver / GPU subsystem have to get things exactly right all the time every time, and not just for Photoshop but for all the other apps (and Aero) as well.  Though Intel and the others may do plenty of testing, what might work on a test bench might not work when combined dynamically with other things in ways that only happen on an end-user system.  Note the number of video game bugs fixed in each driver release.
However complex you think OpenGL is, multiply that by 100 or more and you may be getting into the ballpark.

  • Photoshop CS5: OpenGL disables as soon as I open a document

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a problem I dont understand with Photoshop CS5 ever since I bought a
    new monitor two weeks ago.
I had a 17 inch Dell monitor and Nvidia card with 500MB of RAM and everything was working
    fine.
I bought a 27 inch Dell U2713HM two weeks ago. I noticed that the OpenGL option in Photoshop
was disabled, and hence I could not rotate the canvas easily. I thought it could be the graphics
card having only 500MB of RAM available, and since I was now running at 2560 x 1440 resolution,
that more RAM was needed for operations such as rotate. So I went and bought an Nvidia
GTX630 with 4GB of RAM. Still it did not fix the problem and there is nothing I can do to activate
    the OpenGL option.
If I open Photoshop, I can see in the preferences that the card is recognized fine, and I can play
with the amount of RAM I want to leave free. However, as soon as I open a document or I create
a new one (even as low as 100px by 100px) the option is disabled and photoshop complains that the
document is not OpenGL enabled. If I go back to the 17 inch monitor, this new graphics card
works also fine. So I dont think it has anything to do with the graphics card.
I have updated all the drivers for the graphics card, mother board and everything available.
Any ideas of why this is happening ? Its a bit of a shame, that with this bigger nicer monitor I
cant take full advantage of some of the features of Photoshop. It also makes the zoom and another
    things go a bit non-smooth.
    Thanks,
    Ignacio

  • Photoshop cs5 & opengl on acer 3810t

i've a problem with the opengl function on photoshop cs5. when i installed cs5 for the first time everything worked fine, but after few month all opengl function are dead. In the control panel there is no reference to my video card (i'm sure it supports opengl).
    the video card is a:
Mobile Intel® GS45 Express Chipset with  integrated 3D graphics, with Intel®  Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (Intel® GMA 4500MHD)
i've tried to solve the problem reinstalling video driver and Photoshop, but it didn't work.
i noticed i'm not the only having problems with this video card.... Does  anyone know how can I fix this?
    thanks

The standard answer, which we see again and again from Adobe, is that some part of the OpenGL feature set in the Intel drivers isn't making Photoshop happy, and so you don't even see the option to use OpenGL.  Intel drivers are known to be buggy.  Make absolutely sure you have the latest drivers installed.  Assuming you do...
The first and foremost thing is to contact the video driver maker - Intel in this case - and tell them that their driver software is not working with Photoshop CS5.  Be specific and let them know exactly what hardware and version you have.  I'm sure they care about this.
Then, as a potential workaround there is a registry tweak, which Adobe does not like to see used because it masks problems, that will cause your Photoshop to use the GPU even with whatever's wrong.  This can help you test whether your GPU is capable, as well as potentially helping you work around the missing functionality until such time as Intel releases drivers that make Photoshop happy again.
In the interest of helping you work around this problem, and knowing that Adobe does not like this presented even as a workaround, here it is:
Note:  Do not edit your registry if you do not understand the following format, are not very confident in your abilities to edit your registry, or don't know how to recover if you get it wrong.
This enables your ability to configure the [ ] OpenGL setting in Edit - Preferences - Performance:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop\12.0]
    "AllowOldGPUS"=dword:00000001
    This removes the above tweak:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Photoshop\12.0]
    "AllowOldGPUS"=-
Note that by masking the problem that's causing Photoshop not to present you with the option to enable OpenGL, you're assuming the risk that something won't work right when Photoshop actually uses OpenGL.

  • Photoshop CS5: how many files can be opened at once?

I've just tried to open about 400 jpg's in Photoshop CS5, as I needed to crop them to the best ratio for display on my iPod Touch, and I got an error message saying I'd tried to open too many images at once, and it stopped at about 200.
My system is a Win7 Pro 64Bit, 3.4GHz i7 machine, with 16GB RAM, and I thought actions like this were driven by the amount of system resource available, but Photoshop seems to have an internal limit, regardless of the resources.
Has anyone else come across this apparent limit, and is there a way 'round it?
    Thanks
    Paul

In that case if a center crop will do you can download my crafting actions package. It contains a plug-in script that I wrote based on Adobe plug-in script Fit Image its name is AspectRatioSelection you can record using it in an action set its dialog to have it set a new selection that is a rectangle with a aspect ratio 3 2 that is centered and not feathered.  This script will select a 3;2 center selection for lanscape images and a 2:3 selection for Portrait images.  When the action is played the diaqlog will not show for the plug-in will record the settings you used when you recorded the action into the actions step.  These setting will be passed to the script when the action is played and the script will not display its dialog unless you turn on the dialog in the action step.  Once this setp is recorded follow it with a Image Crop step.  Once you have recorded this two setp action you can run the Image processor set its dialog to run this action and heve it save and resize the crop to fit 1920x1920 or you could include a Fit Image step in the action after the Image crop step and set the Fit Image dialog  width and height to 1920. You will find Fit image and AspectRatioSelection under menu File>Automate>...... You will also find Imahe Processor Pro there if you download it from Russell Browns web site.
If a center crop will not do for you add an additional step to the action to make it interactive by adding an interactive transform selection after the aspectratioselection step.  The step need to be recorded with a 180 degree rotation and  have its dialog turned on and you will need to hold the shift or shift+alt keys down and use a cornor point as you transform the 3:2 selection to constrain the selection to have the same 3:2 aspect ratio.
    Crafting Actions Package Contains

  • Photoshop CS5.1 brush scroll panel issue

    Hello everyone,
Since last week I've been getting problems with photoshop. The brush panel has problems with scrolling, I have tried to fix it by doing a system restore, downgrading my video drivers and reinstalling photoshop. I also have tried to search for other people with the same problems. Unfortunatly, nobody seems to deal with this issue. I am suspecting that it is a problem within windows that is preventing photoshop from working normally... But I am not sure.
I also recorded the problem and posted it on youtube, here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9LZgYjDGAI
    Now, onto discribing the problem:
When I open photoshop this problem occurs right away, however... one panel always will work properly, this tends to switch constantly... When I try to switch between the two panels they start showing problems...
It happens every time that I open photoshop, but there are times where somehow, they work normally. It is very rare though.
I also tried to try and use Photoshop CS5 x64bit, but it crashes the moment it finishes loading.
I am using an:  ASUS K73SV-TY081V notebook
OS:                     64-bit Windows 7 home premium
    Processor:           Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz
    RAM:                   4 GB
Graphics Card:     Nvidia Geforce GT 540M
Is there anybody who deals or has dealt with the same or similar problems?

    Hello Noel,
Thank you for the help, It gave me an idea of how I could test it, so I switched the graphics to my omboard card and photoshop works fine now.
It is indeed the drivers of the Nvidia card, I tested the last two driver up-dates which didn't seem to work so I will keep looking.
Thank you again for the help!

  • Photoshop CS5 and HP Designjet Z6100ps issue

Trying to access the printer properties or trying to print to the  Z6100 from within Photoshop CS5 on Windows 7 after already having done 1  print to the same printer previously will result in the error "Print  failed because the requested printer does not exist.".  The issue does  not happen if you switch to another printer temporarily in between the  prints but it's still very annoying. Anybody having the same issue or  figured out a workaround?
    Thanks

  • Help with Aperture/T2i/iMovie/large file ( 2GB) issue.

I am having an issue with a very large file (3.99 GB) that I shot with my Rebel T2i. The file imports fine into Aperture, but then it isn't recognized at all by iMovie. I found out that iMovie can only handle files that are 2 GB or smaller.
So now, I am trying to figure out how to chop my mega file neatly into a pair of 2GB halves. When I use the trim function, that does not seem to do the trick -- this may be a case of Aperture's non-destructive nature actually working against me.
Does anyone have a solution for this? My intuition suggests that this may be a job for QuickTime Pro -- but I wasn't sure how that works now that we all have QuickTime X.
    Much appreciated.

The file may well be in the wrong format, can you tell us more about it. See This

  • Photoshop CS5.1 preference file deleted problem

    Hello
I hope soemone can help out here, i'm quite stuck!
I'm running OS 10.8.5 using PS CS5.1. My mac was left on overnight (not sure how relevant that is) and when opening up PS this morning it crashed with the message 'end of file encountered' 'preferences file is invalid/has been deleted'
I've read up on a few older posts about the same thing. I uninstalled/reinstalled from disk but the same thing happens.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Matt

Please hold down Shift+Option+Command keys as Photoshop is launched.
Incase this does not work, please delete the corrupt preference file:
    Go to your home folder.
Go to your User Library folder.( OR Hit Command+Shift+G from the Mac desktop (or Finder > Go > Go to Folder) and type in ~/Library)
    Go to the Preferences folder.
Delete the “Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings” (or similar name) folder.(Folder name may differ depending on what version you have)
