Photoshop CS5 question - trying to save a name with extension .jpg or .png
Hi,
If I open a new file and go to save it the extension names show up (.jpg or .png). However, if I open an illustrator file in Photoshop and try to save it the extension names are not there (it's just saving them as the proper format, but I want the files to have the .jpg or .png in the name without me typing them in myself.
Anyone know why this is or how I can fix it?

That is not true. A net document save may default to .jpg. I do not ever remember a save defaulting to .png unless a the document was opened from a .png file. If the new document has layers save should open display the save as dialog and default to file type .psd.

I do not have or use Illustrator however I do not believe that Photoshop can open all illustrator file types like .ai. Photoshop may be able to import and export .ai file. If you have a document open in Photoshop you should be able to use "Save As" and chose the file type you want to save from the file type pull down menu. However .ai will not ne in the list.

I have tried to download 5.0.1 on MAC X 10.6.8. Clicking download, I get a question from MAC --save or name application to open. Saving to desktop doesn't work. It appears in download, but not in desktop. What now?On Mac OS, plugins are installed to a common location, usually ''' /Library/Internet Plugins''' for system-wide availability or to '''~/Library/Internet Plugins''' for a specific user. I am trying to save a document with the new Pages and it is only saving as a ZIP file anyone know how to fix this or choose a different file type?
Take a look at the FileSelector
First make sure the FileSelector is expanded so you can see the directory and sidebar. That's what the little disclosure triangle up by the filename is for. Once the FS has been expanded to look like the above picture, look to see what subdirectory has been selected. Use the SideBar to select an appropriate one. -
Attempting to download a wmv file. I keep getting the message: "You cannot save this document with extension “.wmv” at the end of the name. The required extension is “.webarchive” --if I save it this way, i just get a web address rather than the wmv
Find the URL for the WMV, paste it into Safari's address bar, and press the Option and Enter keys.

OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion Photoshop CS5 Windows file server save issue
After Lion to Mountain Lion upgrade.
Cannot save or save as to Windows server. Due to "program error." Adobe Photoshop CS5. Can save as fine to local drive. Can also drag and drop in the Finder to this server.
This is Photoshop CS5 12.0.4 (current).
Once the error "could not save filename due to a program error" occurs, the file disappears from the Windows server.
I think it has something to due with the SMB connection.
All other CS5 apps (InDesign, Illustrator, etc.) "save" and "save as" fine. It is also fine performing the same procedure using Preview. We're in 2015 and this is still an issue with the latest updates from Apple. Any one confirm that the save to network storage problem in Photoshop is gone with the newest version of Photoshop Creative Cloud?
Here's what's happening in our shop as of May, 2015 with both AFP and SMB server connections:
We are using Photoshop CS 5.1, Version 12.1 x64. I believe this is the most up to date version of our CS5.1 software.
We are on OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.3.
When connected to the server via afp (in server log it says "AFP client")
Photoshop gives this error on a save after some changes are made to the file: "Could not save "file name" because write access was not granted." Then, as soon as you hit ok, the file is deleted from the server and is gone within a minute or so. If no change was made to the file, save works fine.
If you use "save as" and keep the same file name, it will usually fail with the same error as above. If you use save as and type in a new file name, all works fine.
If logged in via SMB (in the server log is says "CIFS client")
When you try to save, the error changes to "could not save "file name" because the file was not found." And then as soon as you hit OK on the error, the file is deleted from the server. Using Save As and inputing a different file name presented a new problem, it always says "could not save as "file name" because the file was not found." (in this case SMB seems to be worse than an AFP connection).
This is very frustrating and has been going on in the forums for over 3 years. Shared network environments are commonplace today. It seems to be centered around photoshop and OSX. All other software we use has been working fine with the server / network attached storage.
Thanks for any guidance. Sean -
Photoshop CS5.1 (12.1) "save as" problem
Problem started yesterday, and has now happened twice.
I've been working along just fine all day (yesterday and today). Then, I open an image, change it from RGB to CMYK or BW, make adjustments, or a clipping path, and then tried to save as (so that I can save as tiff instead of jpeg) and I get the spinning beach ball. The only way out of it is to force quit. I re-start Photoshop and try again, even with a different image and without changing anything, and I have the same problem. I have to completely re-start my computer in order to continue working. Once I do, everything seems to be working fine.
I've not made any changes to my setup today, nor have I updated any software today.
Thanks in advance for your help.

i can't find a pattern of activity to establish a cause action. the files are opened from different folders and would be saved to the same folder. permissions are all correct.
when the problem occurs, I have chosen "save as" either from the file menu or keyboard shortcut. the dialog box doesn't appear... just the spinning beach ball. force quit is the only way out and restarting photoshop consistently produces the problem until i do a complete restart.
it's intermittent, but it's getting worse.

Photoshop CS5 sometimes won't save to server
Hi, my office is having an issue saving previously created PS files to the server. This issue occurs seemingly at random times. When we do get the issue we need to save to the desktop and then replace that file over the one still on the server. Not an ideal solution.
All of our files are stored on a Snow Leopard XServe and we work on 2009 model Mac Pro's running Leopard. We intend to upgrade to Snow Leopard but have not done so yet.
The Mac Pro that is the main offender's specs are as follows:
Adobe Photoshop CS5 12.0
OS 10.5.8
2x 2.8 Quad Core
8GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Graphics Card
If you could shed any light on what may be causing this issue that would be great.
cheers,
David.Like Mr.Cox implied, when it comes to working across a network with Photoshop: »Just say no.«
Or be prepared for unpleasant surprises.
I myself still often do just that, but mainly on smaller files and I am aware of the risks and rely on our back-up in case of mishaps.
Now I know some of my colleagues have a hard time grasping the matter, because »it always used to work back when with Photoshop version whatever« – but that is irrelevant.
Adobe clearly advises against the practice and it seems understandable to me; just consider the possible number of combinations of server- and station-hard- and software (applications and OS).
The testing process to ensure perfect functionality for all those combinations would probably have to be really lengthy. -
NVIDIA Geforce 9400M and Adobe Photoshop/CS5 question
Adobe states that their new software, due to ship April 30, will require a "... qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card, 16-bit color, and 256MB of VRAM"
Does the 9400M on the base model iMac and many other models including laptops, offer hardware acceleration to OpenGL?
If I want to buy a new computer to run CS5, do I HAVE to buy the better models that do not have the 9400M? I'm sure the better model (with ATI Radeon HD 4670) would be better, but is it an absolute requirement? Adobe is not sure which models are qualified. I've been making a list of Intel based Macs that surely won't run CS5. A demo version is forthcoming to find out for ourselves. Any hardware geeks or engineers with tech info?Hi, this is a what I found out: The respective hardware is listed here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/831/cpsid_83117.html
With my white Macbook 4.1 I have no problems to use all features of the regulard Photoshop CS5. Even when running on 2 monitors (I do the actual work on a 23" Apple Display and use the MacBook for my tools)
Even a test with Photoshop Extended CS5 version has worked out but with lousy performance. In case there are people out who like to know, what can be done with OpenGL ... Adobe is great in hiding stuff:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html#updating
Further information can be found here:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html
Also a lot information can be found in the 600+ pages Manual. This is also pretty much hidden. You need to activate the onlin help and than click the text in the upper right corner which read something like "Show Help-PDF (38MB)" ... the wording in German is "Hilfe-PDF anzeigen (38MB)
Or you download it here:
http://help.adobe.com/enUS/photoshop/cs/using/photoshop_cs5help.pdf
http://help.adobe.com/deDE/photoshop/cs/using/photoshop_cs5help.pdf
There is, however, a big problem as soon as several applications use OpenGL. In my case it is EyeTV. I can either view live TV or record it. I cannot do both. Neither can I view a recorded Clip in EyeTV. For me as a non-professional it appears, that OpenGL allows a program to do TWO things at a time which can only be done, if the storage (RAM) is separated). Since Photoshop and EyeTV fight for the same spaces only one can be on first. And Photoshop seems to dominate... the normal view of the picture is produced by the regular chip while the bells and whistles a supported by the graphic chip. EyeTV may even freeze.
By the way, there is an option, to stop EyeTV (and probably other programs too) from using OpenGL.
http://support.elgato.com/index.php?m=knowledgebase&a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=3097
It works i.e. the basics like viewing and recording works but I have decided to use always only one OpenGL-program at a given time.
Last comment - though you did not ask: I have marked under "Finder Information" to open in 32-Bit modus. The program as such works also without this mark but plug-ins like those from NIK-software do not work yet. Their updates are coming:
http://www.niksoftware.com/support/usa/entry.php?view=faqs/generalanswers.shtml#CS5compatibility
I will post my question on a related issue separately = will an increase of the graphic memory to 512MB guarantee better performance or it it also a question, how OSX 10.6 manages the split various memory chips? -
Photoshop CS5 crashes trying to print on Epspn R2880
But I could print from "preview".
I recently (Saturday) format my HD then installed Lion. Yesterday I installed CS5, and the printer, as soon as I plugged in back, the driver was downloaded and installed with just a hit on te 'ok" button asking if I want to look for drivers.
I tried several times, every time from PS CS5, it quits as soon as I hit 'print". Sent report to Apple ever time.
Am I missing something? Should the upgrade to CS5.5 get things better?Hi guys...
It seems i have the same problem... My printer is Canon MP550. I download drivers automaticly, after first plug printer to macbook...

Photoshop CS5.1 will not save prefs
Once quit, prefs are standard again. Even on admin account. PS is the only application of mastercollection with this issue. Reinstallation does not help. What is the solution?
There is no plist file named com.adobe.Photoshop.12.1 in the prefs from system library (Mac OS X.7). Does that make sense?Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Settings folder does not update when I change the prefs in Photoshop. And inside this folder: Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 Prefs.psp file (and all other files in this folder) do not update. Date of installation stays. So actions, swatches, workspaces and so on, also will not remember changes.
My problems are created when I upgraded from CS3 to CS5.5. My software and OS (Mac OS X 10.7.5) is up to date. My hardware is ok.
I found an old discussion thread from others with the same problem at the time they upgraded from CS3 to CS5. Solution: change permissions in prefs folder to "everyone" in Read and Write. This is not working for me on my own account, but it works well on my admin account. Before I had the same problems there.
I discovered permissions for system (read and write) for Adobe PS CS5.1 Settings folder, but there are no system permissions for this folder on my own account. Missing permissions? -
When clicking "Edit Copy with Lightoomroom Adjustments" from Lightroom, I get an error in Lightroom 3 complaining that the Camera Raw plug-in is not up to date; full message below.
"This version of Lightroom may require the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in version 6.1 for full compatibility.
Camera Raw version 4.6 is the latest version available for Photoshop CS3. If raw file support for your camera was introduced after Camera Raw 4.6, the Photoshop integration features in Lightroom require Photoshop CS4 and the latest Camera Raw version 5 plug-in.
The version of Camera Raw plug-in currently installed is 0.0."
After I click "Open Anyways", Photoshop CS5 is initiated but it seems to have lost context of why it is opened and asks me what file I want to open (i.e. the Open As dialog).
"Edit Copy" and "Edit Original" from Lightroom 3 works as expected and opens images fine in Photoshop, CS5 however.
My installation is on Windows 7. I currently also have Lightroom 1.4 and Photoshop CS3 installed. Everything worked fine with the old configuration. I also tried the same workflow in Lightroom 1.4 again just now, which is now linked to CS5 instead of CS3. The "Edit Copy with Lightroom Adjustments" also work just fine.
Things that I have tried but do not worked:
I did an Update via the Help -> Update menu, and also manually downloaded the Camera Raw 6.1 plug-in.
Blew away the Photoshop preferences file
Made sure that Lightroom 3 points to Photoshop for editor
I'm thinking that I'll try uninstall CS3 next. Anyone else encountered this issue?[CS5.1 (12.1) ACR 6.5RC / LR 3.5RC; MacbookPro 4gb Leopard 10.5.8 ] As a Lightroom instructor, up until now this has been a vexxing problem to explain to my students. Even if ACR in Photoshop is up to date (I just downloaded 6.5RC and installed the PS Plugin), I still get the error when attempting to edit from Lightroom 3.5RC. I deleted the PS prefs file to no avail. I was not willing to re-install Photoshop as a solution (per some blog's suggestion), although that might be the ultimate answer. But what an ordeal if so!
For a solution, I went back to a resolution I devised when I had a CS3 compatibility problem with LR3. I went into the Preferences of Lightroom and manually chose the Photoshop app as the "custom" image editor. I went back to edit the file in PS from Lightroom and the ACR error disappeared. Try it. Yes, this means you need to use the Custom editor as your image editor, but it seems to have resolved the issue. -
Photoshop CS5: Can't drag or move anything with the mouse
I'm having a very strange issue with Photoshop CS5 (both 32-bit and 64-bit)
When I go to draw anything or move anything, the canvas does not respond to mouse events at all. Right clicking doesn't work, dragging edges of the free transform box doesn't work, even the top menu bar (File, Edit, View, etc) does not detect when I mouse over from one menu selection to another (e.g. moving the mouse from "File" to "Edit")
Any ideas as to what might be causing this? just started yesterday nightI performed a System restore to a couple days ago and it seems to be working now. Very odd behavior
EDIT: The problem started up immediately again. Didn't do anything special, just continued scaling layers in photoshop and all of a sudden the mouse actions stopped having an effect on the canvas -
Photoshop CS5.1 - Can't save or open file
This is an issue that randomly pops up and has been popping up for a while now (also in CS4 and CS5).
Basically I will be working in Photoshop and all of a sudden I cant save the file anymore. It opens up the dialog (if i do a "save as") but after a second or two it stops, leaving the file unsaved. After this point I can't even open any more files, the "file open" dialog box opens, but no documents.
If I have a document open during this time and try to edit a type layer, it will revert to the previous variant after I commit the changes.
I also can't do a drag&drop command from that point onward.
After I reboot, it starts working again ... until the next time "it" happens.
I have openGL turned off atm, same happens with it being turned on.
Running Win7 64bit, 4GB ram, wacom intuos 3, two monitors
All drivers are updated, but as I've said before, it's an
Please help!Everything is updated. No third party plugins are installed, just the adobe fonts are on this computer (did a fresh install cause of this issue).
Its weird because, I can't even use the free transform tool (it shows the bounding box, but I cant drag anything). Same with the text layers, can't make any permanent changes.
When I click on file/save nothing happens, file/save as opens up a dialog box, but then it's the same thing. -
I can open RAW files from my camera in photoshop, but then after I have edited, i save as .raw, and open up the newly saved file and it just comes up as a grey messed up picture. What am I doing wrong?

Yes, it is preferable to do as much editing on the raw files as you can including global and local tone & color correction in Camera Raw...but there is a limit to the work you can do and sometimes you must go ahead and render the raw file into Photoshop for additional work. Then you'll be needing layers and other functionality that can't be done on a raw file. At that point you'll need to save as a TIFF or PSD. If you work in 16 bit and a large enough color space, the TIFF or PSDs will still be capable of the highest quality...as others have indicated, the Photoshop .raw file format ain't for photography per se.
