Photoshop CS5....Question!!

Hey, guys...
I currently own CS2 Premium Suite and would like to purchase Photoshop CS5 as an update.
Do I need to purchase CS5 Premium Suite or can I just purchase the CS5 update and overwrite my existing CS2 Photoshop???
Thank you.
kylumi

One last point:  If you have the disk space, I recommend you don't uninstall your old software until you're sure the new software is 100% working and you're happy with it.
I don't know about the rest of the suite, but Photoshop specifically can exist in any number of versions on the same computer.

  • NVIDIA Geforce 9400M and Adobe Photoshop/CS5 question

Adobe states that their new software, due to ship April 30, will require a "... qualified hardware-accelerated OpenGL graphics card, 16-bit color, and 256MB of VRAM"
Does the 9400M on the base model iMac and many other models including laptops, offer hardware acceleration to OpenGL?
If I want to buy a new computer to run CS5, do I HAVE to buy the better models that do not have the 9400M? I'm sure the better model (with ATI Radeon HD 4670) would be better, but is it an absolute requirement? Adobe is not sure which models are qualified. I've been making a list of Intel based Macs that surely won't run CS5. A demo version is forthcoming to find out for ourselves. Any hardware geeks or engineers with tech info?

Hi, this is a what I found out: The respective hardware is listed here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/831/cpsid_83117.html
With my white Macbook 4.1 I have no problems to use all features of the regulard Photoshop CS5. Even when running on 2 monitors (I do the actual work on a 23" Apple Display and use the MacBook for my tools)
Even a test with Photoshop Extended CS5 version has worked out but with lousy performance. In case there are people out who like to know, what can be done with OpenGL ... Adobe is great in hiding stuff:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html#updating
Further information can be found here:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html
Also a lot information can be found in the 600+ pages Manual. This is also pretty much hidden. You need to activate the onlin help and than click the text in the upper right corner which read something like "Show Help-PDF (38MB)" ... the wording in German is "Hilfe-PDF anzeigen (38MB)
    Or you download it here:

There is, however, a big problem as soon as several applications use OpenGL. In my case it is EyeTV. I can either view live TV or record it. I cannot do both. Neither can I view a recorded Clip in EyeTV. For me as a non-professional it appears, that OpenGL allows a program to do TWO things at a time which can only be done, if the storage (RAM) is separated). Since Photoshop and EyeTV fight for the same spaces only one can be on first. And Photoshop seems to dominate... the normal view of the picture is produced by the regular chip while the bells and whistles a supported by the graphic chip. EyeTV may even freeze.
By the way, there is an option, to stop EyeTV (and probably other programs too) from using OpenGL.

It works i.e. the basics like viewing and recording works but I have decided to use always only one OpenGL-program at a given time.
Last comment - though you did not ask: I have marked under "Finder Information" to open in 32-Bit modus. The program as such works also without this mark but plug-ins like those from NIK-software do not work yet. Their updates are coming:
    http://www.niksoftware.com/support/usa/entry.php?view=faqs/generalanswers.shtml#CS5compatibility
I will post my question on a related issue separately = will an increase of the graphic memory to 512MB guarantee better performance or it it also a question, how OSX 10.6 manages the split various memory chips?

  • Photoshop CS5 question - trying to save a name with extension .jpg or .png

    Hi,
If I open a new file and go to save it the extension names show up (.jpg or .png). However, if I open an illustrator file in Photoshop and try to save it the extension names are not there (it's just saving them as the proper format, but I want the files to have the .jpg or .png in the name without me typing them in myself.
Anyone know why this is or how I can fix it?

That is not true.  A net document save may default to .jpg.  I do not ever remember a save defaulting to .png unless a the document was opened from a .png file.  If the new document has layers save should open display the save as dialog and default to file type .psd.

I do not have or use Illustrator however I do not believe that  Photoshop can open all illustrator file types like .ai.  Photoshop may be able to import and export .ai file.  If you have a document open in Photoshop you should be able to use "Save As"  and  chose the file type you want to save from the file type pull down menu. However .ai will not ne in the list.

  • OpenGL Photoshop CS5 and memory management by OSX 10.6

I was able to find out quite a bit about the secrets around this issue - see my post on "NVIDIA Geforce 9400M and Adobe Photoshop/CS5 question".
What I still do not understand is the following Apple-remark (in this case on the 17" PowerBook)
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
Intel HD Graphics with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory
Memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 256MB.
For me as a layman it reads "You buy 512 MB and 256MB of graphic memory but if your programs will get it will be decided by OSX 10.6"
What I am also wondering if there is a utility or a Terminal-input that allows to influence how much OpenGL gets from the regular memory DRAMs.

Since the posting I have had no single problem with my 144MB VRAM - though it is somewhat noticeble that more VRAM would accelarate like when I use complex plugin from NIK or parallel video recording with EyeTV. What I avoid is to work with Photoshop, export downloaded TV-clips with EyeTV AND watch life Television.

  • HELP I Need Help With Photoshop CS5

I have CS% for school. I have Photoshop 64 bit. Every time I open Photoshop to do an assignment it crashes. I have talked to other people who are experiencing the same thing with 64 bit. Everyone I have spoken to with 32 bit seems to be doing fine. Anyone else having that problem? Is there a way to go from 64 bit to 32 bit only in Photoshop. All other parts of CS5 work fine with the 64 bit. HELP PLEASE!!! email me at [email protected]

You are in the wrong forum. To save you time, here is the page with the info on how to get CS5 to switch between 32 and 64.

Hi I have a question about shooting in Raw with my Canon EOS 6d.
I'm in the process of learning photography and my goal was to start shooting in raw.
I have Photoshop CS5. When I tried to edit my images in raw I received an error message stating, "The photoshop camera raw plug-in did not recognize the format. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your camera raw plug in."
In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6. My version of CS5 is 6.0.0.205. Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost. THANKS in advance!
    Heather

In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6.
That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.
Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost.
It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC
Or you can upgrade to CS6 (non-Cloud) and pay the upgrade fee
    Creative Suite 6
Or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Or join the Photoshop Photography Program (US9.99/month) and get PS CC+LR

  • Cross platform upgrade question between Photoshop CS5/CS6 and multiple Windows/Mac computers

    Hello,
I'm currently using a Windows laptop and PC running Photoshop CS5 from a Student license I got in college. I am considering moving to an Apple laptop so I was looking at the cross platform update question on the forum that led me here: Order product | Platform, language swap
It's not really clear if I will be eligible for the upgrade, and Adobe support chat sent me to the forum, and that page sends me back to where I started to see if I am eligible. I would prefer to purchase the upgrade outright, rather than pay for the new monthly subscription model.
If I am eligible for a swap/upgrade to Apple CS6, will I still be able to use CS5 on my Windows PC?
    Thanks.

I don't have a definitive answer, but I have a feeling that a student teacher version is not eligible for an upgrade discount.  You own the CS5 perpetual license, and can install it on two computers at the same time as CS6, CC etc.  That will be the case in perpetuity.  (not sure why I didn't just type 'forever' back there, or alert the cliche police 'Going forward')
Photoshop CS6 Extended will cost you just shy of US$1600 according to this Amazon page  The non extended version does not give you the 3D tools, and Photoshop CC comes as the full extended version as standard.  If you got the Photoshop / Lightroom Photography plan at a mere $10 a month, the price of CS6 would keep you subscribed for > three years.  Photoshop CC has a lot of wonderful features CS6 does not have, and will never have, and CC will be be constantly updated 'in perpetuity'. ;-)  $10 a month!  Heck, what's not to like about that?!!!

  • Trivia question for Photoshop CS5 connoisseurs

What would cause  my printer to print in such way? See photo attached. It will only happen in Photoshop CS5. It printed ok in Ai. Looks like the color components are not lining up.
I reset the settings on CS5, aligned my printer, printed a test page and tried a little bit of Juju...
    Need help or suggestions.

Doesn't look like a familiar failure to me, though it crossed my mind that maybe the printer had run out of one of the colors of ink - but that possibility seems to be dispelled by your saying it prints properly from other apps.
Screen grab your print dialog and printer settings dialog.  Maybe it's some kind of "double color management" problem.
Other questions you can answer that may help someone help you:
    1.  What system, what OS, what printer (specifics are needed)?
    2.  What color space is your document in?
Armed with the screen grabs and specific system/printer info, maybe someone with a similar setup will be able to say what they do to make prints work properly for them.

  • Setting a Custom Scale and Measuring in Photoshop CS5 Extended | No Stupid Questions with Colin Smith | Adobe TV

The measurement tool in Photoshop CS5 Extended can accurately measure distance, area and angels in your image but did you know that you can customize the scale that you measure? Colin will show you have to use these tools and accurately measure the height of our stand-in criminal Karl Miller. Also covered will be out to print our 1:1 so that measurements can be taken from printed outputs.

    Hi,
Where can I find the Analysis Menu in CS6 ?
I try to print an "ortographic" front view of a 3D model in 1:1 scale but I can't use your trick...
    Many Thanks

  • Photoshop CS5 extended question

IS photoshop CS5 a program on its own... with 'extended' as a sort of.. add on to it?
so i mean like.. if you don't have CS5 standard, and you buy CS5-extended, will you be able to use it, or will u have to buy the standard version with it?
if not, then why is it that many sites are selling photoshop extended and such low prices.. around 1-400 pounds?

The Extended version has more features.
Please post follow ups in the Photoshop forum. This forum is for suite specific issues.

  • Question about starting PhotoShop CS5

I have Photoshop CS5 in Windows 7. Sometimes when I start up the program it hangs up on "Reading Preferences" for many minutes, and sometimes it stays hung up there for too long and I have to reboot my system sometimes 2-3 times before the program begins to start up again. One time it was so persistent I had to uninstall and reinstall the program so it would start properly.  Any thoughts on how to fix this? It's a real time killer.

I almost feel that Adobe should hand out "gold stars," or similar, to everyone who CAN hit the keys quickly enough...
Good luck, and glad that it's working for you.
    Hunt
PS - from time to time, I will make a Copy of my Prefs file, just in case. Though I have only had to reset them, over 20 years and many versions of PS, having a "known good" Prefs file handy can be, well handy.

  • Photoshop CS5 Brushes etc Questions !

Is there a way to change angle or rotation of the new Photoshop CS5 Brushes ? I've read that you can simulate a canvas texture in CS5, how is this done ?

Did you try modifying the Angle value from the Brush Tip Shape section? Also, the bristle brushes were made for tablets so don't expect to be able to replicate everything when using just a mouse. As for the texture, that's just a function of the Texture section of the Brushes panel

  • Photoshop Animation Question CS5

Please help! I'm very new to animating in PS, here's the problem i'm encountering.
i'm trying to create an animation in Photoshop CS5.
    I create a new frame.
    i draw a ball.
i click the "duplicate selcted frames" button. and it creates a new frame with the ball on it. same as old frame.
i draw the ball in a new place. then try to erase the old ball on this new layer (to give the illusion of it moving), but when i erase it, it erases it on ALL THE FRAMES...
Basically, whatever i do to ONE frame, it seems to want to do this to ALL the frames... i don't understand!
    please help! thanks!

You are mixing up frames vs. layers. You need to duplicate the layers as well and toggle their visibility states.

  • How to install TWAIN plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CS5

Adobe Photoshop CS4 listed my Epson Perfection V500 scanner as a selection under “File-Import”. When I installed Adobe Photoshop CS5, I noticed that scanner selection is not there. I contacted Epson technical support and they said Adobe Photoshop CS5 does not automatically install the TWAIN plug-in that it needs to recognize the scanner and that I need to contact Adobe technical support to find out how to add it.
How do I install the TWAIN plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CS5 so it will recognize my Epson Perfection V500 scanner as a selection under “File-Import”?
Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

    Thanks for your response.
I downloaded the "Photoshop CS5 Optional Plugins" file (PSCS5OptionalPlugins_Win_en_US.zip). I unzipped it and read the "ReadMeCS5_OptionalPlugin.pdf" file. In that file, the only section that discusses TWAIN is entitled "TWAIN (Mac only)". There is no section for how to install TWAIN for Windows.
How do I install the TWAIN plug-in for Windows?
On a side note: Before I posted the question to the form, I changed my Adobe account email from [email protected] to [email protected] I then logged in as [email protected] and posted the question. The notification email for your posting a response to my questions was sent to my old email address (not tye new one). My Abobe account and my forum profile both show my new email address. Where is the settings that controls the email notification for the posting responses?

  • How to always show rulers in Photoshop CS5 and other problems

Does anyone know how to make Photoshop CS5 always show rulers in mac? I have not have this issue with any other PS. I need the rulers to drag guides contantly, but photoshop cs5 would not show the rulers automatically. Everytime I have to go to View --> Show rulers or the shortcut command + R. Is there a way to instruct Photoshop to always show rules with any file I open or create?
I have many other issues with Photoshop CS5 that CS2, 3, and 4 had out of the box... It is very frustrating that I spent all this money and instead of working, I have been on the phone with Adobe for hours... I am very disappointed so far.
I have had CS5 Master's Collection for 2 months now on Mac 10.6.7. I have reinstalled Photoshop 3 times as some shortcuts were not working like shift plus scroll to inscrease to 100%, 200%, etc.
The other thing that still does not work and Adobe has not offered a solution is that my Photoshop would not append extensions. Regardless of the Preferences settings, all my files get saved as JPG instead of jpg... I wonder if any of you out there have this issue as well?
    Thank you.

I believe my computer and its account are healthy. I just bought the mac pro with solid state and the only programs I have installed are the Master Collection CS5.
I have good news though - After two months of waiting, I was finally able to speak with Adobe specialists yesterday and they changed the shortcut for Save As that Photoshop ships with from Command + Alt + S to Command + Shift + S - and miraculously now Photoshop appends extensions!!!
However, my question about always displaying rulers remains. We got disconnected and I didn't have a chance to ask them (I was on hold for an hour and a half!)
